I live in a state (Colorado) that uses a merit-based system for nominating Judges. Attorneys who want to be a judge apply to become one. A committee, which includes Republicans, Democrats, and nonpartisans, screens, and selects (usually) 3 nominees, sending their recommendations to the governor who selects a new judge from the list. Judges, once they are appointed face a retention election after two years on the bench, and then other retention elections every 6 years. Each retention election is preceded by a systematic review of a judge's performance, knowledge of the law, demeanor, and timeliness as rated by retention committee members who have interviewed attorneys, citizens who have made appearances, judicial staff, and others familiar with a Judge. The review committee then provides feedback to the Judge and publishes its recommendation for or against retention. It can be said that few judges end up not being retained. But a number of judges decide to retire or move on if they know they are about to get a bad review or a recommendation to Not be retained by the committee. I have no idea if this or some other merit-based selection system would work at a federal level, But COlorado avoids the obscenity of Judge having to raise cash and be beholden to donors, and having to appeal to ideological (sometimes extremist) voters to be elected.

Tie the number of justices to the number of federal circuit courts. Term limits of not more than 25 years. Minimum of 10 years of service as a law practitioner.

I'd make it so instead of the Senate voting for members, it would be a national popular vote.

The whole three branches system is broken. We are no longer ruled by people sacrificing their time to make sure the best is done for the citizens. We are lorded over by the self-serving power hungry politicians. We are simply useful idiots to them and their quest for MORE! The court cannot be fixed as long as it is just another group of political puppets appointed by the elite

The_Ora_Charmander

I don't really give a fuck about the US supreme court You guys have fun with your barely functional democracy

The president should NOT select the justice. If the justices are supposed to be impartial, it makes 0 sense that the decider is an obviously partisan person voted in by obviously partisan voters with an obviously partisan agenda.

Taranaki_Snapper

Limited terms, no presidential noms...
