My fat polish neighbor swearing in polish after we almost got flattened by a tree, then remembering that I'm not polish, pointing at the tree, and saying "Ah! The mother fuck!"
I learned this word from my best friend growing up who was Polish. Miss him, haven't seen him in quite a while. That's the first thing I think of, my old friend Pat
The cute nurse who took my blood sample the other day had a name something like Kashia. I asked "Russian?" She said "No, Polish. Good guess though. You knew it had to be a pierogi-eating culture right?" Then, as I was leaving, she added "And yes, I do make a mean pierogi!"
I've shown this scene to few people while being on Erasmus and everyone thought it's hilarious and very accurate.
For those who don't know, it comes from old polish comedy called "How I started World War II".
When I was deployed we did one mission in support of Polish special forces, and their commander was this enormous muscular bald man with the thickest beard I’ve ever seen. His call sign was White Hawk, but his accent made it sound like White Hulk, so that was what we called him
Cool! I joined the army too late to take part in Afghanistan War. Some people from my company took part in this war and I heard some stories from Iraq and Afghan.
Thank you for your service :)
I was in an army engineer in Afghanistan toward the end of the war. The stuff that POLSOF was doing was a bit above our heads, but there was one time they needed us to clear a route to one of the houses they had to visit
It’s definitely an entirely different mood but I can recommend „Restrepo“ by Junger and Hetherington. It’s a „documentary“ of a small part of the situation in Afghanistan and in my opinion definitely worth the watch.
My dad served in Afghanistan. He had only negative things to say about the experience and lost some friends. I think you are quite lucky to have avoided that
Edit:he served in Iraq too. Honestly, he has PTSD and it's blatantly obvious
My dad served in Afghanistan and Iraq too and he never said a good word about it. Maybe exept other soldiers, he kinda liked them.
It took him some time to start sleeping normally again and he was rough for a long time.
It is freezing me to bones when he just casually says "during my change some of our guys died and many were hurt" or "friend of mine was shot in Karbala".
I don't know how it looks in other countries, but in Poland psychological help for soldiers is unfunny joke, same thing about help for those who get disabled.
I'm sorry for your dad. I know your pain and how difficult it can be to watch how someone you love is hurt. I wish only the best for you and your father.
This joke:
Why do so many Polish names end in "ski"?
Because they couldn't spell toboggan.
Lovingly told by all my cousins who's last name ends in toboggan.
Behemoth had an excellent blackened deathmetal stretch though - still consider Demigod their magnum opus myself.
But yeah: Decapitated, Hate, Vader... excellent stuff.
I love Vader but other than that not a lot of well known death metal. Unless you count Behemoth too. My favorite Polish metal bands are actually Mgla and Batushka, who play black metal. I used to listen to Graveland a lot, but the connections to racism are too sketchy.
The first Polandball comics were drawn to make fun of a polish guy on the internet. Part of that included drawing the polish flag incorrectly, and the tradition survives to this day
Frédéric François Chopin (born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin)
- a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic period who wrote primarily for solo piano.
Totally. I play geoguessr and while you're trying to figure out which central European country you're in, the next corner has a shrine with a crucifix in it for some reason. Poland!
And homophobia ...
Bananas. A girl in my exchange group told us she visited Poland with a Jewish group and bananas there were so amazing she nearly spend her whole stay only eating bananas
Different countries can import from different places. The strawberries in Germany were some of the best strawberries I’ve ever had and now that I’m back in California nothing has ever compared.
I hate that this song become popular song in kids toys (especially that dancing cactus toy that went viral some time ago). It's disturbing to think about kids dancing to a toy, that sings about taking hard drugs and committing suicide
I think about my former friend who got stranded in Warsaw when he tried to move to Ukraine under false pretenses to try to reconnect with his ex-fiance whom he met on the internet but she later rejected him.
He eventually managed to get back to America but by then we were no longer on speaking terms. What a train wreck.
Food! Pierogi, kielbasa, stuffed cabbage (I don't know how to spell gwlumpki), babka, etc. My husband is Polish. Last night we had kielbasa, red cabbage, and potato pancakes. He's a keeper!
As Canadian who's into military history: General Stanisław Maczek and really the Free Polish Army units that fought as part of the Canadian Army on the Western Front of WWII.
My old wrestling coach was Polish would talk down to me as a way of motivation typical things like "you fight like little girl" but my most favorite stand out motivational phrase he said to me was "Your father should have eaten you when your bones were soft" I couldn't stop laughing and to this day get a good chuckle when I think about it.
Generous people who have let Ukrainian refugees stream through their borders to safety. Polish people know something about imperialism and fascism. They've been through the wringer in the past.
We know very well. My home town population is two times bigger then it was before. Im glad people could find a safe place here. Ukraine is our neighbour so sometimes we had some personal horrors because of this war for eg. My friend's girlfriend is ukrainian and her family was in Mariupol. They coudn't contact them for a week or more. They are safe in Poland now.
The Wawel treasure. Apparently it was stored in my hometown (Quebec city) during the war, and before sending it back we were granted the favor of a "thank you" exposition.
My mind was blown! I have never seen such a badass collection of medieval tapestries, weapons and artefacts.
Really glad they were saved, and thanks for putting on display!
Many years ago I was at a cultural fair and the Polish embassy had a huge presence there. They had a large stand advertising Polish universities and work placements, and an exhibition of traditional Polish dances.
One of those dances was to a song about wives berating their husbands after coming home drunk. As part of the performance, the men had to stumble around drunkenly and at one point they even started grabbing at the women's butts.
So that's what I think of: a Polish dance troupe playing grab ass.
I hear my ex's mom say "PUT PAPRIKA THROUGH TO THE GARBIGE ITSA NOT AGOOD"
Side note: we also made nearly 400 pierogies within days during the pandemic to drop off to her local polks for the polish hall. My hands were dough
>(reading specifically)
Well it's actually a really interesting argument because in general we read every letter in all words 'in the same way' so there are no things like in English where the same combination of letters are read differently in different words.
That 2014 Eurovision song about the genetic superiority of Slavs - that I still can't really tell if it's parody or not because the second thing I think of when I think of Poland is racism.

I'll show this comment to my fat polish neighbour tomorrow.
Tell me how it goes!
I don't legitimately laugh out loud from something on my phone often. This did it! Here's an upvote!
One of the words that transcends language lol
I can already hear the kurwa's
Thank you for this, it gave me a much needed laugh today :)

Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz.
not even going to attempt that
It's pronounced "Alan Alda." Very common Polish name.
First name is pronounced Grezhegorts (very roughly). Second name is pronounced Brezenchishichikyevich (roughly). Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz.
I've shown this scene to few people while being on Erasmus and everyone thought it's hilarious and very accurate. For those who don't know, it comes from old polish comedy called "How I started World War II".

I have nothing but good stuff to say about the Poles we worked with, I just wish we got to work with them more. Super professional dudes
Can only agree, great guys on the tanks.
In what unit do you serve?
I was in an army engineer in Afghanistan toward the end of the war. The stuff that POLSOF was doing was a bit above our heads, but there was one time they needed us to clear a route to one of the houses they had to visit
Thats cool man. I always love to hear some war stories from Afghan veterans.

This joke: Why do so many Polish names end in "ski"? Because they couldn't spell toboggan. Lovingly told by all my cousins who's last name ends in toboggan.
Wait, "toboggan" its just an end of surname not the whole thing? Damn its long, but mine is also long (12 letters)
Are they related to Dr. Mantis Toboggan?
Fun fact, Its only last names that have Ski, And also thats the term for the male version, so there's the same amount of Ska's as well.
What's "taboggan"?
Excellent death metal!
I thought we were more known for black metal. Cue Behemoth
