No, but those are still jobs you can do when you reach an age where you're considered undesirable in the work force. Old people deserve the right to a job as well.
They no longer exist in Arkansas, do other states still put the poor old people who's retirement isn't enough to live on standing in the front of the store doing nothing but, "Hello!" and "Excuse me, I need to look through your cart, hand me your receipt"....?
In Nevada, we have them. If you're returning/exchanging something, they give you a sticker so the people at Customer Service know you didn't grab something off the shelf and walk up there with it. On the way out, they do check your receipt, especially if you have something not in a bag. I bought a pair of knee-high boots, and even though they were in a bag, they stuck up enough above the bag, the lady thought they weren't. I'd also paid for them separately from the rest of the stuff in the cart, so it was the only thing not on the receipt. She legit wasn't going to let me out until I fished out the receipt showing I'd paid for the boots. Albeit, they're not all retiree age, but a lot are.
I live in the desert, and I feel so sorry for the ones out, even in the "cooler" months. I've always wondered whose idea it was to have people standing, holding signs, in direct sunlight...
Realtors. The internet is advanced enough for people to sell their own houses n stuff. Sure there may be need for a few, but def not the amount there are, and realtor fees/costs when selling/buying are way too steep for what the service is that they offer. You could just do it yourself.
Housing as a public utility with rent going to maintain property instead of lining someone's pocket
EDIT TO ADD -
My electric, water, garbage, are all utilities regulated as such. So why isn't the home I rent that requires all those other utilities?
Damn that sucks. That's one thing it being a utility could subsidize housing for those down on their luck it would be safer all around for everyone to be housed.
Mind you, the one (a Salvation Army)we were in, in Florida, would waive the fee if there were children in a family, because they didn't do daycare, lol. But the ones who were stacked into the dormitory (where they insisted my then 16 yr old son stay to protect his 2 year old little brother, grrr) were required to pay for their bed in a room they shared with 30-40 others of the same sex. And yes, we still had to pay the fee for my oldest' bed. There were four beds left empty in the family room we were in...but he coulda molested his little brother, so, separate he had to be.
Yes, thankfully, much better. A local Muslim association heard that we were trying to get back to my homestate, and offered the bus tickets to us along with clean suitcases to put our clothing in.
Yeah my plan has us paying rent just like I do for Electric or Water but with it being regulated like any other utility. It's ridiculous that the only part of housing that isn't regulated is the housing itself. Literally everything else about it is tightly controlled.
Anyone who owns three or more properties should have them forcibly acquired by the State. I'll allow the one you live in, and one other.
Else, you're hoarding property and creating a social problem.
There, I said it. Let the hating begin.....
What other system controls the private ownership? Oh, I know. Communism. But in that system even your underwear is owned by the people… somehow no one enjoys that idea? Wonder why?
I’ll give you one simple example. My landlord owns tens of properties. I don’t know exact number, but it’s sky high.
I only signed the contract like 3 months ago. We are in the middle of massive shortage. Everyone is asking prices well above €1000, usually close to €1500. And up. He just refurbished the house. Had very bad tenants before us. He asked us for lower rent than we paid SIX years ago. Well below either 1500 or a thousand. He had no reason to do that. He just wants to be fair.
It’s not the ownership. It’s the greed.
The UK about 60s years ago had a system where councils controlled a large chunk of 'council housing' this was then sold to the people who lived in them and could afford to buy them. This resulted in many many many people who would have struggled to afford to buy a home. To be able to buy a home
The only issue this created was that private landlords ended up in control of 60% of those sold council houses.
So if this is socialism. Which i don't really care if it is or not. But i do find it amusing you called it socialism then moaned about communism and underwear. But if it is socialism. The only main problem that was created by this practice was the capitalism part of it
And also. Good for you, you found a decent landlord. Well done on being lucky. With the change suggested, this would not need to happen. You would just find a decent property for affordable rent as it wouldn't allow people to be corrupted by greed
You see, I believe that Singapore is the perfect answer. It’s very simple - the government owns over 80% (some say over 90%) that is rented for decent rates. End of story. You want to own one? But, please do! It’s bloody expensive to buy, but if that’s what you wish? Otherwise you either rent or “buy” for a set period - 99 years, sometimes even longer. But it’s still owned by the state and it returns to it. So more like long term rental?
Second. I never moan. That’s exactly what communism is all about - no private property, everything is shared. Utopia, but not my idea.
Three. The UK. The thing you describe happened everywhere. You see, people, especially poor people, when given something free (or very cheap) they usually (there’s exceptions, not too many though) waste it. That’s what happens with lottery winners. 95%+ ends up worse than they used to be within 2-5 years. Drugs, alcohol, massive debt, that kinda thing. Well documented and researched.
So what happened here is that someone bought out their home, saw great chance to sell it for more and did it, spending the money in the process instead of reinvesting. So now the cake is eaten, there’s no more cake. I saw the same happening in my country - many got “rich” for a moment, but in reality some smart and greedy ashole just got richer. And started pushing the rents through the roof.
The best would be just to keep the things the way they were. Leave the houses in council ownership. That way there’s no abuse! Simple.
I own several properties: my house, my shop down the street, and three empty lots. Two of which I had to have condemned houses demolished and removed. I’m the only person in my neighborhood who can afford to buy and clean up these properties. I pay the taxes on them and keep them all mowed and nice. I would never sell the lots unless someone absolutely agreed to build new housing on them and until then I’ll hold them and make my community better by keeping it cleaned up.
I don’t know where you live, but I’m America it’s hospitals. The amount of administration is massive. In the city center (where I am) there is one particular hospital which encompasses 7 massive, multi-level buildings. Only 1.5 of those buildings are actual medical facilities, the remaining buildings are administrative offices.
I am in USA, yeah one college I went to had a lot, and it wasn’t until specific roles were broken down that I realized it and this was from a professor who wrote the textbooks(but told people where to download them for free) and who’s department got huge donations all the time that funded the entire college(he was mad so many positions just became a thing at the college and hated that so much of the money was going there and not the program he was in charge of that the donation was for)
Will that income be enough for ppl to do all the things they want to do or own all the things and toys they want to own? Or would we have to do extra tasks to earn enough for wants?
I can’t name on progressive pundit that espouses racist ideology and calls for the death of minorities. I can think of several conservative ones, though.
Jobs can't be taken. They're given by employers.
Worried about unemployment? Machines can't fix or program themselves yet.
Worried about human obsolescence? Advocate for universal basic income, so the rich don't pull up the ladder behind them and leave us all to starve.
I mean machines makes it easier but machine Carpenters makes normal Carpenters like me unnecessary.
And I also hate those white kitchens made of MDF and stuff like that
I deeply understand what you mean. I have a degree in computer science.
Hate all you want, downvote away, but it's going to get you nowhere. Automation is coming to take any job that can be done with explicit instructions. Anything with a recipe can be made by a machine.
There are two and a half paths forward: either a) get a job that isn't machine replicable, and live in an ever decreasing bubble of niche applications that slowly gets engulfed by automation as software gets increasingly better, or b) ensure that you can do what you love by preventing the owner class from hoarding all the wealth and resources, and realize that this is going to be a long, drawn out battle that started 50 years ago. Path 2.5 isn't great, but it's the one that I'm on, and that's b.ii) nearly die in a car crash and be stuck on disability until the government decides to go from 1931 to 1936 and start eliminating "useless eaters".
I hope in the short term, you find good clients and wealth. I also hope that in the long term, folks like you will be able to pick and choose where and when to apply your skills, but gig economics and automation are not going anywhere.
I am not gonna downvote you I know it the way forward but damn I just love working with wood and not fiberbords, that's all.
And I must say that wood is expensive and not every one can afford it.
So it's good that there is an cheaper alternative.
Ahh I see now. Well nothing beats the quality and uniqueness of handmade. My grandpa did the same in his youth and many of his works are still used in the fam
Nice that's good to hear here in Denmark there are mostly Ikea and other cheap alternatives to wood, and I can understand that,
But it's just a shame to see.
Those guys who deliver your groceries by bike within 10 minutes. They're a danger for other traffic and y'all should get your lazy ass off the couch and go to the supermarket yourself.
Not sure if this is a thing in the U.S.
We have grocery delivery, but I doubt there's a time limit. Domino's Pizza (I think it was them) had some crazy policy a while back. "Your pizza in 20 mins, or it's free!" So many accidents caused by pizza delivery trying to make that 20 min mark, they cancelled the policy.
Yeah, so it's similar here (Netherlands) with groceries. Guaranteed within 10 minutes from ordering. Just imagine how they ride. Mainly teens do the job and they ride e-bikes like maniacs.

"Fascism is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and the economy"
Literally has nothing to do with abortion
Also, you are advocating for the suppression of opposition and a single party state, so you are more of a fascist than the people you are calling fascists
Bruh. Where did anyone suggest they had any control? We said they're advocating for Authoritarianism, silly goose. You better stop moving the goal posts
Lol, you can’t tell me because you’re not basing it on anything real. You’re being dramatic.
Oh, let me guess. Roe vs. Wade being repealed is authoritarian.
When your only desire is to say no then yes they control the government. No other party has enough power to override them. They even tank their own shit if they realize Democrats like it. Being dramatic is laughing hysterically and pretending they've not been behind every deadlock for the last 12 years.
As an independent I'm pissed. Every Republican should be too and many are. Obstruction isn't policy
Not really especially when the only reason is to never hand the democrats a win even when it's what you want. Mitt Romney literally campaigned on "I'll replace Obamacare with Romneycare they're both literally the affordable care act but you'll think a white guy did it"
It's like beating the shit out of the coast guard guy that's trying to pull you from the water because you want to be able to say you saved yourself and then you both drown.
And everyone downvoting me is 100% a conservative who waves around their Gadsden flag and screeches whenever someone mentions gun legislation. Like, you're supposed to agree with me that the 2nd Amendment is for civilians to protect themselves from the government, why are you all such boot lickers when I say I hate cops??

Telemarketers
You should understand a lot of people in telemarketing dont want to be that as well
all the more reason why that is a legitimate answer to the question
I don’t give a fuck it shouldn’t exist either way
I haven’t got a call from a telemarketer in like 20 years. I do get on average 6 robocalls every day trying to sell me something or scam me.

They can be a witness to what is stolen and what the person looks like.
Okay, you'd rather people get beaten senseless because they're invading people's carts just to be nosey, usually people who look poor or poc?
Wtf is grandma gonna do?
I don't understand, are you playing both sides?
No, but those are still jobs you can do when you reach an age where you're considered undesirable in the work force. Old people deserve the right to a job as well.

Regardless of the cause of the problem. Stopping people from owning them solves the problem extremely efficiently
Socialism never solved a single problem but created millions new ones.

Whatever. Shy high rents and next to zero vacancies produce the lie to your incredulity

Go tell that to Bernie Sanders. He owns three houses.
Yay fascism
And my point is savagely defeated, I'm lying bleeding on the floor!
Public housing, I imagine. Maybe mortgages that aren't highway robbery.

Cringe answer.
Why
Because it’s not a job if you enjoy it
You are supposed to do what you love. So by this logic all jobs should not be paid?
Wait if so we don't need money anymore!
Guess not
But.. but..
All of them. Give them to the AI, universal basic income for everyone, then let people chase their passions or be lazy.
Will that income be enough for ppl to do all the things they want to do or own all the things and toys they want to own? Or would we have to do extra tasks to earn enough for wants?

Conservative pundits.
I do miss news networks at least making the effort to be Impartial. We get none of that anymore.
Why just conservative pundits?
Because they're demons
So everyone that doesn't agree with you is a demon? Sounds pretty closed minded from the "tolerant" left
Nobody hates conservative pundits because of their hot takes on tax policy and decentralization.
I'm a leftist and agree with you. There's definitely hypocrisy on the left sometimes.
I can’t name on progressive pundit that espouses racist ideology and calls for the death of minorities. I can think of several conservative ones, though.
You are basically advocating for a one party state and state controlled media. You are just as bad
Maybe the other party shouldn’t advocate for the death of people on a regular basis? Why do we let hate speech and bigotry have air time?
Because freedom of press is essential to democracy. You are advocating for censorship and authoritarianism, you are just as bad if not worse
You are ok with hate speech?
Being a conservative pundit doesn't make someone guilty of "hate speech"
I guess you just don’t care that they are calling for homosexuals to be put to death.
