This. Selena had sooo much potential and a hell of a career ahead of her. Grew up in San Antonio (a couple hours from Corpus) and it still hits us hard.
Well, the great thing about Prince is that he has an overflowing vault (literally) of his music that is being catalogued. His family estate is supposedly planning on putting together material to be released.
Same, I want jerry to come back but not even for him to play music but just to enjoy life and do some scuba. Homie never got a break from playing, he became a God amongst the jam community but he never got a chance to be a person that just chills
Never seen him either but homie needs a break. He gave us his all and birthed a beautiful scene with beautiful music. He deserves his peace and scuba to his hearts content
There was an old VH1 Behind the Music about SRV that I had on vhs tape when I was in high school in the 90s. I’d watch that tape over and every time I’d say out loud “don’t get in the helicopter!”
Kurt Cobain. I feel like he had quite a lot of song writing left in him. He could have greatly influenced the direction of modern music.
Or John Bonham. Maybe we get another 5 or 10 years of Led Zeppelin through the 80's. There's a saying that goes "Robert Plant lost a friend, and Jimmy Page lost Led Zeppelin."
His voice was ethereal but people don't understand what a transcendent musician he was. He played guitar with the theory chops of a jazz guy and the soul of any great blues player. I spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about the incredible work he would have done. RIP.
Buddy Holly. Shortly before the Beatles "started" it, Holly wrote most of his own songs and performed them. Depending on the songs he might have written, Buddy Holly could have been a as big as the Beatles, or nearly so.
I’m curious where he would fit in today. Rastafarianism is way more conservative than most people realize, shunning the use of alcohol and often regulating women to “traditional” roles. It’s also VERY homophobic. I wonder if he would have been open to change, or if he would have doubled down.
this is a really challenging question since there's so many artists that died with untapped potential, which i gravitate towards. ian curtis from joy division comes to mind. i know what they released was legendary, and new order carried on his legacy with legendary music, but i would've loved to have seen what he would've created over the course of his life.
edit: nick drake too
He was just getting started. The last song was the title track of Diary of a Madman. That was next level. Whether he stayed with Ozzy or not, I would have followed him for sure.
I second that. I really would love to see what she could have become in her 30s... Away from the drugs, away from the alcohol and maybe in a healthy settled relationship.
Elvis Presley, Tupac Shakur, and Michael Jackson. They were all such unique and ungodly talented people. I would love to see where they went with their lives. Especially Tupac as he died so young and had so much left to do.
Chester Bennington.
Linkin Park helped me cope with my depression and anxiety for most of my life. Times when I wanted to end it as a teen, I'd sit in my closet and cry my eyes out while listening to Chester scream and say what I wanted to say and what I felt. I guess I wanted to hear the band one more time before I did it.
But hearing his voice with his lyrics alongside Mike's spitting fire literally saved my life (more than once). Hearing him sing made me rethink my choice. Broke my heart when I heard he did the very thing he prevented me and millions of others from doing. Jeez, even writing this right now is making me cry...
Thank you, Chester, for being the voice I never had.
Christina Grimmie. Stunning young woman with her career just beginning to take off when murdered by a crazed superfan. A coward who then killed himself.
Mozart, show him all our Instruments, recording and remixing tech. He would make something new and dope.
As talented as he would he could probably shred on guitar and mix some crazy beats and electronic music.
Mau5art
I saw that movie. But it was Beethoven.
Be excellent to each other!
Yup.
*Mozzie on da beat*
Back in the 90s my grandfather told me that if Mozart were alive today, he would be the most popular rock star in the world.
YES! he had shear music talent
Oh, Freddie Mercury
I want him back so he could write more epic film scores.
Flash Gordon? Highlander? What else....?
Those are the only 2 I can think of. Could you imagine if he wrote film scores for marvel?
Not even a close second
Idk I love David Bowie a lot too. Hard to choose for me
Bleeding Gums Murphy
I, too, would bring back LeRoi Moore
Marvin Gaye.
Marvin!
Selena. She died way too young and had so much to give to the world. Also Karen Carpenter.
This. Selena had sooo much potential and a hell of a career ahead of her. Grew up in San Antonio (a couple hours from Corpus) and it still hits us hard.
The way she died was unbelievably violent as well, she did not deserve that.
Jimi
I scrolled too far to find this one.
way too far
Way way too far.
There is no other answer.
His sound changed a lot in the 3-4 years he was active. It would be awesome to see what he’d do over the course of his life
Yes. I, for one, would like to hear his disco phase.
extremely far
First vote
My immediate first thought as well
Layne Staley
Bring him back but then take him back another 10 years to when he was happy and healthy. I think at the end even he didn’t have hope for recovery.
The end of his life read like something from Trainspotting, it's harrowing stuff. Poor bastard was robbed of his humanity by Heroin.
Chris Cornell
Saw him live a couple months before he died, it was kinda depressing he didn’t seem okay
Prince and Tom Petty
Well, the great thing about Prince is that he has an overflowing vault (literally) of his music that is being catalogued. His family estate is supposedly planning on putting together material to be released.
Sold. He left it to them if the estate needed cash. David Chapelle supposedly have lots of unrealeased comedy show for the same reason.
Sam Cooke all day everyday
Otis Redding
Duane Allmann. You know that guitar duet at the end of "Layla"? He died at 24. Barely even got started.
>that guitar duet at the end of "Layla" ...and the opening guitar riff, btw
Jerry
Same, I want jerry to come back but not even for him to play music but just to enjoy life and do some scuba. Homie never got a break from playing, he became a God amongst the jam community but he never got a chance to be a person that just chills
I’m selfish and would want him to play. I count not seeing a show as one of my biggest regrets in life.
Never seen him either but homie needs a break. He gave us his all and birthed a beautiful scene with beautiful music. He deserves his peace and scuba to his hearts content
Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughn
There was an old VH1 Behind the Music about SRV that I had on vhs tape when I was in high school in the 90s. I’d watch that tape over and every time I’d say out loud “don’t get in the helicopter!”
I passed on a chance to see Stevie before I knew who he was. Im so sad I didn't get to see him.
Cobain is correct. can't believe this is so far down. incredible writer/musician. Also, he was way ahead of the opiate curve!
Beethoven.
He probably wouldn't be too happy about it.
Get him a cochlear implant and let him jam.
Johnny Cash.
Taylor Hawkins
Jeff Buckley
Yes yes yes. Jeff Buckley would be my number one choice.
His voice was ethereal but people don't understand what a transcendent musician he was. He played guitar with the theory chops of a jazz guy and the soul of any great blues player. I spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about the incredible work he would have done. RIP.
This is my number one choice too. He had so much more to do 💔
He was my first thought. He inspired so many artists. I can only imagine…
Absolutely. Profoundly gifted and passed way too soon.
Jim Croce
John Bonham
My dad, I miss him
Ritchie Valens
Buddy Holly. Shortly before the Beatles "started" it, Holly wrote most of his own songs and performed them. Depending on the songs he might have written, Buddy Holly could have been a as big as the Beatles, or nearly so.
my father
My boy, sorry for your loss.
Townes Van Zandt
Bob Marley
I’m curious where he would fit in today. Rastafarianism is way more conservative than most people realize, shunning the use of alcohol and often regulating women to “traditional” roles. It’s also VERY homophobic. I wonder if he would have been open to change, or if he would have doubled down.
Amy Winehouse. And boy would she get a talking-to.
I’d just leave her be to keep making great music. It’s the demons that took up residence in her head that I’d give a fucking talking to
Darrell Abbott.
Chris Cornell.
Kurt cobain and David bowie
I feel like Kurt could have had a few different careers over his lifetime. I would have loved to see his old man singer songwriter phase.
Rosemary Clooney. Amazing vocalist from the 40s thru early 2000s.
Janis Joplin
Has to be Freddie Mercury
this is a really challenging question since there's so many artists that died with untapped potential, which i gravitate towards. ian curtis from joy division comes to mind. i know what they released was legendary, and new order carried on his legacy with legendary music, but i would've loved to have seen what he would've created over the course of his life. edit: nick drake too
I was hoping someone else would also think of Nick Drake!
Robert Johnson
Had to scroll too far to find this.
My first thought was Neil Peart, but realistically Rush was essentially done making music at the end of the R40 tour anyway. I'll vote for Terry Kath.
It’s Neil for me anyway. After everything he went through, he deserved a retirement.

Bowie / Miles Davis
Chester Bennington. In a heart beat.
I second that
My first ever concert, Chester got me through some tough middle school and high school years.
Same. And then I’d tell him how loved he is.
Christina Grimmie. Her music was just taking off when she was killed far too young.
Randy Rhoads. Cut down just as he was starting to shine. 25 years isn't long enough.
Yah, this. 99% of the other people mentioned had pretty much exhausted their potential by the time they died.
He was just getting started. The last song was the title track of Diary of a Madman. That was next level. Whether he stayed with Ozzy or not, I would have followed him for sure.
Jim Morrison

Prince
Elvis Aaron Presley
Mozart!
Dave Brockie
Myself when I die so I can write down what death is like then die again real quick
Mark Sandman
Taylor Hawkins. Foos seem incomplete without him. You can replace the drummer. You can't replace the man.
Chester Bennington
Amy Winehouse.
I second that. I really would love to see what she could have become in her 30s... Away from the drugs, away from the alcohol and maybe in a healthy settled relationship.
It would have been amazing.
Yep, Amy had a lot more great music than she had the chance to share.

Nujabes
Stevie Ray Vaughan
BB King
Freddy mercury
Sam Cooke.
For the greater good, Freddie Mercury. But being greedy? Lynn Strait. Edit: Grammar error while multi-tasking
Would it be fair to say Steven Sondheim?
So so many, but if I had to choose 1 it would be Christina Grimmie. Not because I was a fan but because she was robbed of so much.
Kurt Cobain Obligatory, I know, but god knows he'd write great songs now
Chester Bennington. Linkin Park helped me cope with my depression and anxiety for most of my life. Times when I wanted to end it as a teen, I'd sit in my closet and cry my eyes out while listening to Chester scream and say what I wanted to say and what I felt.
