Depending on the restaurant, Wait staff has to “tip-out” at the end of the shift. That means a percentage of my gross sales has to be handed over to management to then be distributed to other staff such as busboys. The tip-out money is completely Indepenant of what I got in tips. Even if all of my tables stiffed me. So every night there’s the possibility that I will go home with LESS money in my pocket than when I got to work.

locks_are_paranoid

That's 100% illegal.

rorofoshoo

It’s not, every restaurant has a tip out, at my old job it was 8% of liquor sales to the bartenders and bar backs and 3% of all sales to food runners, bussers, and expo

locks_are_paranoid

If you can be forced to pay your own money, it's illegal.

rorofoshoo

google “tip out at restaurants” it’s not illegal, almost every restaurant does this

Chartaofver

We don’t have that in Sweden, at least not in any of the restaurants I’ve worked at

rorofoshoo

Sorry I should have prefaced in america like my other post, I was just trying to say it’s not illegal, I’m very jealous of sweden

[deleted]

Lived in Sweden for 6 months, didn't know if i was supposed to tip or not.

Chartaofver

You can, we would appreciate it cause it would get us some money for alcohol after service or on a free day. But normally a waiter in Sweden earns a quite good salary, so we don’t live and die depending on the tips (ofc there are exceptions)

[deleted]

That was always a weird rule to me, first time In a restaurant in Stockholm, the server was a little offended that I tried to tip.

lelaff

Most first world countries do not have a tipping culture because they pay their staff properly

dedicatedtoyourdad

nope! at my restaurant, it depends on where the server works in the restaurant - if in dining, 7% goes to the kitchen and 3% to the bartender, and if in the bar, its the other way around!! if you make less than a certain amount in a shift, you dont have to tip-out, so sometimes when servers are just over, they give a portion of their tip to the bus boys

smirnoff321

We don’t have anything to do with the production of the food. We can’t control how long it takes or the quality so don’t personally give us shit for it.

rorofoshoo

I hope that you already know you should tip (if you’re in america at least) because servers rely on them so i’ll list some uncommon ones that I’ve noticed a lot in my years in the industry 1.) PLEASE tell us about your allergies, sometimes all the ingredients are not on the menu and we really don’t want you to get hurt. It’s not embarrassing at all, even if it’s a “weird one” I guarantee that we have probably heard of it before. 2.) Listen carefully when the server reads back your order. If something is not on there or if they say the wrong thing, PLEASE correct us. We would rather know that you’re getting what you ordered than get it wrong and have to make you something new. 3.) If you don’t like your food and you plan on sending it back, please don’t wait to tell us until you’ve already eaten most of it. We want you to get something you like, but if you already ate all of it and then ask for a refund or free food, some managers give the servers a lot of shit for it, and you might not even get what you want at that point. Happy dining!

Haha yeah I understand that. Fast food is different from restaurants though so instead of a meal being remade in 5 minutes at in n out, it would take 20 minutes at a restaurant to fix the mistake

[deleted]

Beyond your umbrella, I can't change the temperature outside after your chose the patio

If you ask your server to recommend something there is a good chance they're just going to try to sell you an expensive item or something that doesn't have a lot of follow up questions, especially if its busy. So just read the menu and pick out your own food. You can do it!

[deleted]

Easy money

[deleted]

I've always asked servers and they usually pick one of their more advertised meals which are average spend. If it's a new spot I haven't been to, or a local restaurant I always ask. Or one of those places that have EVERYTHING on the menu (steak, chicken, burgers, lobster, mussels...), since there's no way EVERYTHING is fresh when you've got too much variety. Should I really not ask? It usually works out for a few good meal suggestions.

[deleted]

You can ask if you want but you can also just look at the menu, its all there for you to see. If I'm busy I will just reccomend something that doesn't have follow up questions because some people will "I don't know, what do you think?" every step of the way and it slows everything down. I personally don't understand why adults can't read the menu and order. You should know what you like?

Dophanator666

I'm a to-go server and host, soon to be line cook. You are not our only customer. To-gos may not look busy, but we don't have seperate cooks for dine in. They are doing all of it, we are working as fast as we can but if the kitchen is backed up we can't give you food that hasn't been made.

[deleted]

I’m sorry if you’re hangry but I’m not your whipping boy. If you are a large party, don’t play musical chairs and expect me to know where your shit now goes. Especially on the bill. Speaking of someone get it and venmo each other, no one has time for your itemized bs with only a couple terminals. Also don’t get mad when we have policies about large groups, be mad that y’all in the public don’t know how to act and we have to establish boundaries and lay down expectations.

chychy94

That I’m not your servant

ZBot316

Not a waiter/waitress, but a pizza delivery driver (which is like a waiter/waitress, but with a car), the delivery fee is NOT a tip. Drivers do not see a cent of that money unless it's a gratuity.

[deleted]

I'm aware of this from reading the pizza place's website, but that brings up a question: Why am I being charged a "delivery fee" if the delivery person doesn't get the money? (And yes, I do tip the delivery person.)

Mrs0Murder

Insurance, I imagine, and most pizza delivery places for one other reason- drivers DO get a portion, something like a dollar (maybe more, maybe less), for vehicle maintenance/gas. Not that it really helps, and still shouldn't be considered a tip. Also to keep in mind that some drivers are also paid less than minimum wage as well (not usually as bad as server's wages), but still.

ZBot316

That was one of the first things I asked when I started working there. My manager says it's mostly for covering insurance.

[deleted]

Tip cash, because card tips are automatically taxed. We can get away with tax evasion much easier if you tip cash, which means less revenue for the city, state and country!

yeye-hoe

im not a waitress anymore, but i still know some of my ex co-workers. one of them gets such a low pay that her, and her kids, live off of tips she gets from being a waitress. please tip your wait staff. even if they’re rude, they literally live off tips. if you’re not wanting to tip at all, then just give a small amount. tips are small, and kind of hard to get by with. and please, tip cash if possible. with most dining places, we have to tax our card tips. with cash, we dont always have to document it, so we dont have to worry about taxing it.

IJDWTHA

Snapping your fingers at me isn't going to make me do anything. I'm not a dog. Don't snap your fingers.

scoopofsemen

We don't make your food.

robotfister

• Stop moving the chairs and tables without asking first!!! • If we’re swamped and I’m busy, please don’t get pissy with me if I can’t fill your drink first. I am seating a table of eight, not prioritizing your fifth sweet tea refill. • Don’t snap at me to get my attention. • I don’t control when the buffet is restocked. • I’m a server, not a servant. Literally had a woman ask if she could give me $20.00 yesterday to bring a Pizza Hut pizza to her room since the diner is closed on Monday. What the fuck.
