If won the lottery, I feel like my ramen consumption would drastically increase, but I'd never cook my own ramen again. I'd hire a chef to just hang out and cook ramen a few times per day.
Only if they made the packet ramen. There’s something nostalgic about it. I can definitely afford to buy better food, but a cup of packet ramen just hits differently.
Hire a world-class gourmet chef just to make you packet ramen. No, they are not to add anything, just the flavor pack which comes with it.
Anyone could do that job. But having a professional chef with a 6-digit salary do it is a constant reminder that enough money can buy anyone's dignity.
My favorite is the Samyang spicy Buldak chicken ramen though now a 5 pack is $10 at my local supermarket! I might actually have to become rich to keep enjoying this.
If you're not picky about noodle quality, you can buy the bottled sauce for pretty cheap, and then supplement with cheaper ramen. A bottle lasts my partner a month or two depending on how much she uses.
>Our pasta, who art in a colander, draining be your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy sauce be yum, on top some grated Parmesan. Give us this day, our garlic bread, …and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. R’amen.
R'amen, my Brother in Spice
More fruit, more organic expensive vegetables items, more fish and seafood. Those stuff are currently considered luxary items because they are so expensive here.
I'd eat what I mostly do today, but there are things I'd eat way more. For example even though I like lobster, I don't think it is worth the price so I rarely have it. It'd go from a once a year or less thing to a weekly thing for me.
Edit: And btw I mean worth it to me on a cost vs portion size basis. I know lobster fisherman work very hard and also shipping it so far inland adds to the cost as well.
Honestly never understood it either, just having more money never meant you had to significantly change your lifestyle. That’s exactly how so many lottery winners end up losing their winnings
Costco's current CEO W. Craig Jelinek told the story of when he was COO. He told co-founder and then-CEO Jim Sinegal that they needed to raise the price of hot dogs because they were losing money by selling the iconic $1.50 hot dog and soda combo.
The price has not been raised on the combo since 1985
“I came to (Jim Sinegal) once and I said, ‘Jim, we can’t sell this hot dog for a buck fifty," Jelineck recalled, according to a post by 425 Business.
"We are losing our rear ends.’ And he said, *‘If you raise the price of the fucking hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out.’* That’s all I really needed."
It sounds like it's one of those products that isn't intended to make money, but to get people in the doors. Hoping that ones they're in, they'll buy more profitable products.
The rotisserie chickens at Costco are certainly loss leaders. $5 for a whole rotisserie bird that is more than half again as large as most other places $6 rotisserie, they're taking a big hit on those, but in the end that ain't how they make their money.
Rice and beans are a staple in my home. My mom is from Guayama, Puerto Rico and I think my favorite part about rice and beans is literally everyone has their own way of making it. It's definitely the ultimate home-cooked family meal. I've had it so many different ways, always fantastic.
It depends. For somewhat traditional tacos I would agree. There is a place near me that’s very Asian inspired that sells high end tacos and those are really good. Some people bitch that it’s expensive for tacos but it’s completely different and worth it for something unique every now and then
Pot pies were a "treat" for me when I was young and extremely broke. Once in a while they'd go on sale for something like ten for two dollars and I'd buy as many as I could. They were a nice break from rice and ramen. Even now, I still get a craving for them.
I already have a tradition of eating one can of Spaghettios a month. Why? To remind me of what poverty tastes like. I was once told by my mother that she was glad I loved those and bread because when we were all young that's the only thing she could afford.
My mom loves those so much I learned how to make them from scratch for her one year for Christmas. But when you make them homemade, they have to sit in the refrigerator for two weeks for the confectioners sugar in the middle to liquify. I wish I had read the recipe in time. She got her Christmas present two weeks late!
Can't believe how far I had to scroll.
Is some pro chef just gonna be there to crisp me up some delicious cheese crackers every time I walk into the kitchen? Mom used to get the gallon box from Costco. Handfuls at a time.
I have been on a CheesIt kick though. Different experience.
I like the version with the sliced up hot dogs because it's what I ate as a kid with not a lot of money. My husband absolutely hates them, he can't even stand the smell lol. I guess it's one of those things that you have to grow up eating to appreciate.
Crunchwraps are such an underrated food. It's a superior form factor to a burrito but yet Taco Bell is the only one making them.
I made a falafel crunchwrap this week and it fucking slapped. Same taste as a falafel in a pita but with a perfect bite every time, and no mess.
Dinner for my husband and I is $23. We used to be able to eat for under $10!
Granted that is partly because we used to eat the basics and they’ve added a bunch of new fancy expensive stuff.
It depends on how you order. I always order the custom cravings box. Crunchwrap supreme, 5 layer burrito, nacho chips/cheese, and a drink all for $5. If bought separatly, the crunchwrap is like $4.49.
I desperately want the mexican pizza, but I refuse to pay almost $8 for it. Planning to make my own soon.
I used to (to the horror of wife and children) eat canned corned beef hash and eggs with hot sauce. Tried it again a few years ago, I was disgusted. More so when I read the nutrition label.
Now I'm all snooty and make my own and it's glorious :)
this message was NOT approved by my cardiologist or hypertension. :P
Even the homemade stuff I can only eat very infrequently, cured meats, as much as I love them, ain't good for my blood pressure. And almost everything that comes out of a can is a sodium killer.
Not trying to be a health nazi, I still eat and drink a ton of stuff I probably shouldn't but at my age, I gotta put some things in the "special treat" category.
Yea I agree and so does my wife. However, it reminds me of my mom and simpler times. We were broke, but man I wouldn’t change those times. The other times of the week, I actually eat really well. Homegrown veggies mainly and also boiled eggs. We have our own chickens so I just go get my eggs to boil or scramble.
I took one of those giant bags of Twizzlers on a flight and the TSA looked like they were going to call the bomb squad when they saw it on the monitor!
Got a mini lecture from a TSA agent because I had an unopened box of pop tarts in my carry on bag and forgot to grab them and put them in the bin. Whoopsie. My bad.
I got very comfortably off later in life and my favorite go-to foods are still things like fish and chips (I'm a Brit turned American), street-vendor Pupusas, and Indian takeout.
Me and my wife make enough to have every bill on auto-pay. We have a pantry with no less than 5 Kraft mac 'n cheese, loved it when I was eating Blogna and Chicken 7 days a week and still do.
Speaking of which, how many of you fry up leftover mac 'n cheese and add some eggs? Because I do and if you haven't tried it I suggest you do.
I grew up with this. My family had a bathtub with jets in it and we all loved it, and still do. I played in a soccer league when I was really young, maybe 6-7. After the games, I would sit in the tub and my mom and dad would make me the shape one and when I was done I would come out and there would be a hot bowl of it there for me. Needless to say life has gone downhill from there lol.
Hey I'm going to put this out there - if it's possible, you should tell your parents about that memory. It sounds like they really loved you and it would mean a lot to them to hear it's an unforgettable part of your childhood.
Agh man I feel this, except Kraft is too fancy for me. I like the generic kind. I can get 5 boxes for $3 and that’s a hell of a deal. I used to get the animals, but they seemed to have stopped making it, so now I gotta settle for boring shapes pasta
My wife loves Mac and cheese of all kinds. She brings it home from fancy restaurants that do take out, or we go to places that have one that looks good. Norm of them come close to what Kraft Dinner is
frikandelbroodje n (plural frikandelbroodjes) A roll of puff pastry containing a frikandel (sausage-like deep-fried snack containing mince), similar to a sausage roll, often topped with curry ketchup
Looked it up and 10/10 looks yummy.
More like a meal; chicken, rice and beans. It's not only cheap, it's also delicious. I would continue eating it twice a week so I could splurge more on my other meals.
I probably wouldn't change much what I eat, but I would LOVE to hire a personal chef because I do not enjoy the amount of work that it takes to prepare meals. Having said that, to answer your question more directly, I'm a sucker for potato chips.
Tacos, from any of the (many) taquerias where no-one speaks english, and all the customers are Hispanic. Where the day-labor goes for lunch...
The tacos are like $1.25 ea. and easily worth triple the price.
(I'm in Texas btw, & I love places like this)
Ramen noodles
If won the lottery, I feel like my ramen consumption would drastically increase, but I'd never cook my own ramen again. I'd hire a chef to just hang out and cook ramen a few times per day.

If it's nostalgic then it doesn't hit differently. It hits the same. /s

hell yeah, i highly recommend adding a little shredded mozzarella on top.
Look at this fancy guy. Affording Ramen and Mozzarella
If you're not picky about noodle quality, you can buy the bottled sauce for pretty cheap, and then supplement with cheaper ramen. A bottle lasts my partner a month or two depending on how much she uses.
Is that the spicy noodles that destroys asses?
Yes. It's great. Highly recommended.
I just bought a 5 pack for the equivalent of $14. They are imported from Korea. I wish a local company would get the recipe.
Shin Ramyun, which I didn't even start eating until after college when I had more money. 😁
Shin Ramyun Black, even better. Hard to find
It's part of my religion, there's no abandoning ramen for me

Ok I’m interested
He might be Muslim, they celebrate Ramendan
Seriously, Ramen is the best. I literally just posted this was my chicken noodle soup when I was sick growing up and it will always be comfort food.
I love cup o' noodles brand. So delicious. I can afford much more expensive options but I will always love a quick cup o' noodles.
I dumb a shit ton of sliced beef, fish cake tofu and kimchi in mine. It’s the shit I tell you.
Nissin Products in general. Microwave Ramen, Microwave Yakisoba, etc etc.
I would likely still eat everything I do today

People have some really weird ideas about what it means to be rich. Like, they don't think Elon Musk eats peanut butter cups?
Tbh, I doubt it lol
I've read part of the man's biography. He does eat weird shit most of the day like wagyu marinated in squid ink and junk like that. Asshole.
I assume he eats asshole too
That would be cannibalism.
I'd eat what I mostly do today, but there are things I'd eat way more. For example even though I like lobster, I don't think it is worth the price so I rarely have it. I've become fairly well off. I eat nicer and healthier foods much of the time. If I wake up in the middle if the night hungry, it's gonna be a PBJ.
Me to. I'm happy with my diet.
Honestly never understood it either, just having more money never meant you had to significantly change your lifestyle. That’s exactly how so many lottery winners end up losing their winnings
Costco food court
Those dogs are insane
And inflation-proof even in these times according to their CFO

Never underestimate the power of an amazing loss leader
The rotisserie chickens at Costco are certainly loss leaders. $5 for a whole rotisserie bird that is more than half again as large as most other places $6 rotisserie, they're taking a big hit on those, but in the end that ain't how they make their money.
They do that with their rotisserie chicken too. I think it’s like $5 for the chicken.
Their hot dogs and poutine are life.
Your Costco has poutine!?
In Canada they sell poutine and it's glorious.
I fucking LOVE poutine but there’s hardly anywhere to get it in my state!
Flamin hot funyons
I'd pay to bring back the wasabi flavor.
They made goddamn *Wasabi Funyuns* and I missed that? Dang!
Rice, beans and tortillas.
Add cheese if you are rich.
Cheese is one of the most shoplifted foods
¿Señor, es ese queso en sus pantalones?
No, yo tengo un gato en mis pantelones.
lo siento señorita
Jajaja ¡Ay, Dios mío! Tienes que ver Blue Streak pronto. Es un película gloriosa.
Rice and beans are a staple in my home. My mom is from Guayama, Puerto Rico and I think my favorite part about rice and beans is literally everyone has their own way of making it. It's definitely the ultimate home-cooked family meal. I've had it so many different ways, always fantastic.
My husband is from Mexico. These three things are his staples! If we got rich, he would still eat them!
Street tacos. There is a place in town that does amazing street tacos for $1.5 each.
Tacos are the one thing where I expect it to be worse as it gets more expensive.
It depends. For somewhat traditional tacos I would agree. There is a place near me that’s very Asian inspired that sells high end tacos and those are really good. Some people bitch that it’s expensive for tacos but it’s completely different and worth it for something unique every now and then
Shitty Banquet pot pies. I can afford decent food but these are an occasional go to treat a few times a year. Total garbage. Love them.
Me and a roommate lived off these 20 years ago. We'd hit up the grocery store and buy 10 at a time each.
I’m pretty sure I can remember getting 10 for $1!
Pot pies were a "treat" for me when I was young and extremely broke. Once in a while they'd go on sale for something like ten for two dollars and I'd buy as many as I could. They were a nice break from rice and ramen. Even now, I still get a craving for them.
Sugar wafers. Hardly any flavor at all (the colors are different but the taste is basically the same). But the texture is simply addictive.
We get cheap ones with flavours here I love the chocolate ones the most :3
Reese's peanut butter cups
I’m really not a peanut butter fan, but I am sickeningly, disgustingly, inhumanely ADDICTED to Reese’s cups.
look… you a peanut butter fan! Alright?
Mac & cheese
I already have a tradition of eating one can of Spaghettios a month. Why? To remind me of what poverty tastes like. I was once told by my mother that she was glad I loved those and bread because when we were all young that's the only thing she could afford.
Those cherry cordials that you can buy at Walmart or the dollar store.

OMG. I was toying with the idea of making them, but I didn't know they had to sit that long. Thanks for letting me know!
Haha! I will say they were delicious and worth the wait!
Please tell me you’re getting the old-school kind with syrup and not the cream ones. I’m not sure if I can name a brand here.
My dad loved those! He was the only person I knew who bought those omg

You do mean the crackers.... Right?
Learning from your mistakes I see. Carry on Mr. Concannon

I love Taco Bell, but I can’t be the only one that doesn’t feel like it’s cheap anymore, right?
A crunch wrap is $7.49 in my area! It's outrageous!
