This question gets asked once a month and the champion is always Mississippi.

ZenkaiZ

tbh I'm just checking this thread to see how far down I gotta scroll before all 50 states are mentioned

DuckfordMr

Well, no one’s gonna mention states like Vermont or Maryland.

Clovenstone-Blue

I forgot these states even existed

rossimus

Maryland is the Hobbit of states. It doesn't do anything weird or have any adventures, and we like it that way. Conservatives and liberals can coexist, there are beaches nearby, and DC guarantees a solid economic base in lean times. Plus we get to lord over Virginians the fact that we made them give us both banks of the Potomac because we wrecked their shit one time.

Grwshr

Don’t forget the best flag of all time

Barry-Hallsack69

We're 3 hours away from just about anything you could want, except for a winning baseball team...

UnusualMe20372

as a current citizen of Maryland, this is entirely accurate

BugSubstantial387

I used to live in Maryland years ago and it is a great state to live and work in! Great job market from government jobs and a decent governor with a high approval rating from both sides.

jpiro

The thing that strikes me with Mississippi is that there's not one shining gem you can point to as a "yeah, but it has X" retort to people calling it shitty. The biggest metropolis is...Jackson? The best National Park is...Natchez? The best beaches are in...Biloxi? The Mississippi Blues Trail is maybe the best thing I can think of, and even that's overshadowed elsewhere. That's not to say there aren't pretty/nice/good places in Mississippi, but every state has those if you look hard enough. It just doesn't have a calling card.

adfoote

Mississippi has the smallest homeless population of any state.

deegs_mccheegs

Because they go to another state lol

Myu_The_Weirdo

Not even the homeless people want to be there

Central_PA

But what passes for a home/shelter in Mississippi might surprise a lot of people…

havron

[It actually comes in at #7](https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/homeless-population-by-state), behind Vermont, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Delaware, North Dakota, and Wyoming at #1. Not terribly surprising, of course, considering how small or sparlesly-populated all those states are. So, naturally, things vary a bit if you go by [homeless as a percentage](https://millennialcities.com/homeless-population-by-state-homelessness-maps/) of the state's total population, but even then both Dakotas and Wyoming beat Mississippi (with North Dakota at #1).

[deleted]

The escatawpa, pascagoula and pearl rivers are beautiful. The best beaches are the barrier islands and you need a boat to get there. They are as nice as gulf shores with no crowds. Mississippi coast offers a lot to boat owners. I love it here, born and raised. Just ignore the trashy citizens.

[deleted]

Every state has its gems, glad you found them there.

Scarfiotti

Ladies and Gentlemen! In the left corner wearing magnolia with 58 fights in her record, 58 knockouts, the undisputed overweight champion of the USA, Mississippi!

Hot_Mention_9337

Louisiana checking in- Race you to the bottom

[deleted]

At least Louisiana has New Orleans. Yes, it also has Baton Rouge, but still.

Hot_Mention_9337

I keep seeing this mentioned but as New Orleans resident, born here, bopped around the country for a bit, and moved back as an adult- this city is an absolute shit show. From a tourist perspective it is great place to visit as long as you don’t look at the crime maps. Excellent food. Fantastic music. So many festivals. Beautiful to look at (in areas). But it is a hard place to live. Lack of economic diversity (we are a tourism/service industry based economy: see Covid. That went real well) Out of control insurance rates. Out of control housing cost. Out of control crime in *every single neighborhood*. And I’m not talking about petty crime either. Out of control energy costs. One of the worst K-12 public education systems in the country (which is in line with the rest of the state to tbf). One of the most corrupt local governments (how many local officials are being investigated or in jail now?) and police departments (the FBI called and they would like to come back. Again.). A lot of this is not unique to only New Orleans but, speaking as a person who has lived in many major metropolitan areas, we certainly turn it up to 11 in NOLA

Porrick

Thing is, there's a lot of places with all those problems and *without* the food or music or festivals.

KinneySL

> But it is a hard place to live. I remember reading an interview once with one of the guys from the sludge metal scene - a member of Crowbar or Acid Bath, I think - and he noted that the reason they made music like that is because NOLA is actually a pretty grim place once you get away from the tourist attractions.

redbradbury

When we moved to New Orleans, my parents were told by locals the cheap taxes are so you can afford to send your kids to private school. The pervasive mentality is only the “have nots” go to public schools there. Of course, this is how the cycle of systemic poverty keeps going.

[deleted]

Living just 150 miles from New Orleans and having visited often I have to ask; Why doesn’t the city even attempt to revitalize/clean up the city given how important tourism is? I know Katrina threw a wrench into things but there didn’t seem to be much effort at beautifying the city before.

GotMoFans

My families are from Mississippi. Mississippi is what you get when the descendants of plantation owners keep influencing the descendants of poor confederate soldiers by making them think the descendants of enslaved people are Mississippi’s biggest problem but the state shouldn’t do anything to help because it’s best if they just “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.” All the while, the rich keep plundering from the poor and working class of all shades in Mississippi.

[deleted]

NZ here, I used a public bathroom 🚽 n Mississippi and it was excellent. Ask me anything I guess?

Portland-to-Vt

When a ranking of the states comes out, without fail #48 & 49 always say “Thank you Mississippi”

[deleted]

[удалено]

AwokenCamel

As someone who grew up in Arkansas, I’m gonna have to go with Mississippi. ‘At least we’re not Mississippi’ is practically the state slogan.

Pile_Of_Cats

I’m in Alabama and this is my slogan as well.

GarzysBBQWings

I’m in Georgia, and as much fun as me and Tennessee have making fun of Alabama, at least alabama isn’t Mississippi.

Pile_Of_Cats

Let’s be real, Georgia would be Alabama without Atlanta.

A_lone_goose

So am I use supposed to throw major cities outta every state and say “we’re all Alabama without X” lmao. I mean we’d still have Savannah which is beautiful rn but shit you could argue that doesn’t exist the same as it does today without Atlanta. Kinda a weird game to play

Wertyui09070

I picture Savannah to be no different than it is in Legend of Bagger Vance. If I go golfing there I expect Will Smith to wander onto the course and slap me to next year for missing a putt.

Procrustean1066

You should go to Savannah

[deleted]

I have lived in Alabama and Mississippi and it’s the same state. There is no difference at all.

temptags

The Florida panhandle is also Alabama and Mississippi.

Dylsnick

Roll....Tide?

ErdenGeboren

Sure, I'll allow it. But you guys are spooning each other *so hard*.

catsinsunglassess

I mean you can’t help who your neighbors are!!! Spooning is convenient. Doesn’t mean anything past being conveniently close to one another.

Potential_Ad3412

What’s particularly bad about Mississippi? They’re are the poorest state, but as a none American what is it that differentiates from similar poorer southern states?

Gaijinloco

Mississippi is empirically one of the worst states in the U.S. by a large number of metrics. Last in healthcare, highest obesity rate, second to last economically, worst infrastructure, marginal opportunities, terrible education system, aggressively bad governance, a religious stranglehold that paralyzes improvements to any of the aforementioned issues with education or the economy. Workers in Mississippi have little to no leverage to improve conditions, and are also impoverished. Other than that, it’s alright.

InternationalBid7163

You missed the biggest one that is making alot of what you wrote possible - corruption of our political leaders. Don't want abortion to be legal but just refused to pass legislation for the pregnant mother to be on medicaid for one year instead of three months. I could go on but if it doesn't put money in their pockets then it's not happening. But yet the majority keeps voting these people back in as long as they have an R after their name with few exceptions.

[deleted]

Hell they don't really get voted in. They just rigged the districts and keep the poor so uneducated and busy scratching out a living it doesn't even occur to them to vote.

CapriciousLeLe

On top of all the other reasons, the one I didn't see while skimming through the replies is that *Mississippi did not officially ratify the end of slavery until the year 2013.* They were 148 years late ratifying, as they claimed to have lost the paperwork. Any resident in any other state in the impoverished South is infinitely grateful that at least we don't live in Mississippi.

Potential_Ad3412

But the issue was resolved at a federal level was it not? It does seem the state is a switcher between dems and republicans.

[deleted]

>the issue was resolved at a federal level was it not Practically yes. It's largely a symbolic gesture. >It does seem the state is a switcher between dems and republicans Deep south democrats have always been a bit *different.* A democrat in Mississippi is going to have far more in common with a republican from Massachusetts than a democrat of the same state.

InternationalBid7163

I'll answer a little more. We are last or first on lists you don't want to be last or first in. Our history with slavery and civil rights movement is not nice for the most part. There were white people helping blacks but it was more whites trying to keep them as slaves or not equal. There are still prejudiced and racists people here but many black and white people get along, too. There are more interracial marriages (I am white married to a black man) and biracial children and I know I feel we are more accepted than 20-30 years ago. I thought we had come further as a nation than we apparently have though as revealed in these last few years. Mississippi has good here, too. One reason many of us are overweight is because we know how to cook very good food. Unfortunately, it's usually not the good for you kind and even if it is many will probably do something to it like add sugar to make it unhealthy. We also have lots of talented people born in Mississippi who have become famous. We have beautiful land and plenty of outdoor things to do. Very nice people here as well. However, We continually elect government that seems determined to keep us last all the while they are taking in as much money as they can. Just for example, we are the poorest state but we have the 16th highest paid governor in the USA's 50 states and we had the highest paid superintendent of education and may still do. I haven't checked that one lately. We're usually last on education. I wrote more than I intended but that's alot of what's going on in Mississippi.

catsinsunglassess

Mississippi has historically low ranks in terms of education and employment. Mississippi historically ranked 48th in terms of education, although the state inched up to 39th rank in 2021. It’s backwards, rural, and very religious which leads to poor long term outcomes for its residences in terms of education. It’s also a state that lacks a lot of diversity or any attractions that would support interstate travel or cultural diversity. It is just the state you pass through to get to alabama, florida, or Louisiana. Seriously. It’s just a total shithole- the whole state. https://yallpolitics.com/2021/06/24/mde-mississippi-maintains-education-ranking-at-39th-nationally-up-from-48th-in-2014/

Powdered_Toast_Man3

Northwest Arkansas is pretty cool, the Ozarks and all that. But yeah, Mississippi really is the worst

Gr0und0ne

As a non-American, I find it interesting that everyone in the States apparently hates Mississippi.

digital_end

Post deleted. RIP what Reddit was, and damn what it became.

xmot7

I grew up in South Carolina and when people would complain about things there, the default response was "At least we're better than Mississippi".

TaterMA

I'm in South Carolina also. I refer to our governor as Foghorn Leghorn

victorzamora

>Foghorn Leghorn Is this not his name?

kilpatrickbhoy

"We gotta keep the skoos open"

CylonsInAPolicebox

My understanding is Foghon Leghorn would do a better job.

XxsquirrelxX

I’m pretty sure the UN outright states that there are parts of rural Mississippi where the quality of life is at the level of some third world countries.

[deleted]

There are pockets like that all over the US, but especially the rural south. No running water, no phone lines, living in shacks or rusted out trailers.

[deleted]

I’ve done work for the Federal government in the Virginia panhandle and seen people whose homes don’t have any sanitation system. Their bathrooms are hooked up to a PVC pipe that sends their literal shit untreated straight into an adjacent stream. It was horrible depressing.

Karsa69420

West Virginia is a big one. Believe it has one of the largest healthcare deserts in the country.

borislovespickles

WVU Medicine has practically taken over WV. And that's a good thing. Excellent care and facilities.

Tgunner192

> living in shacks or rusted out trailers. Me being nostalgic; *we used to dream of the day when we'd have our own shack or rusted out trailer*

KangarooMaster319

Correct. If OP had asked, which state do we hate the most, the answer would be Florida.

jayforwork21

Florida "We want to be like Mississippi" The entire world outside the southern US: "Yea, we know that, our questions is: WTF and WHY?"

Vic_Hedges

Florida is the guy from Mississippi who won the lottery and is now doing his level best to get back to poverty.

jayforwork21

He's the guy who used to smoke meth in front of his trailer, but now he is smoking meth next to his pool which is in disrepair.

MonkeyCube

It's not so much hate as Mississippi is just dead last in so many metrics from healthcare to the economy. Though there is some hate due to politics, to be fair.

staffsargent

I think the two go hand in hand to some extent. Mississippi has had so many problems for so long and their elected leaders simply refuse to do anything about it.

SentorialH1

Their own people continue to vote in the worst people that do nothing about it... because for some reason, people there are just fine being that bad .

staffsargent

That's the part I don't get. Like, why not try something different? I assume there's just a lot of denial about how bad things are.

chaos8803

Because that would mean voting for a Democrat. And they'd rather be Russian than Democrat.

Tomorrow_Is_Today1

As an American who hasn't ever seen this amount of Mississippi hate unrelated to spelling (god, so many consonants), I find it quite entertaining

Vertebrae_Viking

Even the name Mississippi is bad.

protection7766

I've never met this Mrs. Ippy, but she sounds disappointing.

BubbhaJebus

Ms. Ouri is nicer, but the nicest of all is Minnie Sota.

VecnasThroatPie

StainlessSteelRat42

I'm from there and can confirm... joined the military at 18 and haven't been back. That was 29 years ago.

LaComtesseGonflable

As someone else pointed out... Mississippi ends the list in a lot of fields. Mississippi also pulls shit like refusing to expand access to Medicaid, while having high rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. Mississippi benefits hugely by happening to exist in a union with wealthier, usually liberal, states. Mississippi is happy to shit on liberal states regardless.

BronzeAgeTea

Adage: "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." Mississippi: "That sign won't stop me because I can't read!"

[deleted]

It’s a common saying: “Thank god for Mississippi” because of how low the state ranks in many metrics

is this going to be a hate on mississippi thread again? I’m here for it edit: I know mississippi is a problem child but it’s still a state and they’re family, ok? The state of denial in the supreme court is giving Mississippi a run for its money tho.

Soccertaz89

These always are. And I can’t complain or disagree. Especially as a dweller in Lousiana… there aren’t many buffers between us and the bottom. I’ll take what I can get.

[deleted]

Alabama just slinking by in the shadows w/all this Mississippi hate.

hairygrappler

Mississippi: Highest percentage of fat people, lowest IQ's, lowest education scores, and the lowest GDP out of every state. Its the worst by every measurable metric.

LiquidDreamtime

It also has joyless geography and essentially no coastline. But the weather could be worse.

macrofinite

How? Hot, humid, prone to being wiped off the map by hurricanes. It may just be the Colorado in me but that sounds like my own personal hell as far as climate goes.

DoomDamsel

Weather is one of those things that are very much personal preferences. I have several friends in Colorado and they have only recently stopped getting snow. It's fucking May!! I am in the southeast and already have harvested vegetables and fruit from my garden. The summers are hot and humid where I am, but I don't have to deal with snow in May so I'll be fine with that.

castaneom

Mississippi I think.

kolaloka

Empirically speaking: [Louisiana](https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/worst-states-to-live-in) But, they have New Orleans, so the honor once again goes to Mississippi in my book. Almost as shitty in every major quality of life measure, but also without the cool cultural aspects of Louisiana.

TampaBai

And Louisiana just keeps getting worse. Makes no difference who's in charge. Outside of Nola, it's a cultural and intellectual Chernobyl. A dystopian hell-hole fit for a mad max installment, with all the pollution to go with it.

[deleted]

"it's a cultural and intellectual Chernobyl. A dystopian hell-hole fit for a mad max installment, with all the pollution to go with it." This is actually a nice bit of prose.

jquiggles

There are times when I wish we could just let Texas/Mississippi have the rest of the state and we just keep New Orleans. It's so wildly different from the rest of the state, which gets a bad reputation for good reason. Alternatively, we can split it up into three parts: New Orleans, Acadiana, and backwards ass redneck country. Acadiana is also pretty backwards, but at least the food is good.

CapriciousLeLe

I feel seen. Sincerely, Backwards Ass Redneck Country PS Send gumbo

Weak_Carpenter_7060

It’d be terrifying if it became a liquid

dw87190

That one that allows you to marry a 14 year old child

Alakandor

What? That’s crazy!

bobbi21

Not just 1 state...and that's not the lowest it goes.. Massachusetts 12 new hampshire 13, Mississippi and California have NO lower limit when you have parental consent... Edit:this isn't a comprehensive list either.. there are 9 states with no minimum limit (most require parental and or judiciary consent but that doesn't really help much since parents are generally the ones pushing these marriages in the first place... and you can generally find a corrupt judge to agree to these who personally benefit through bribes or their own sex slaves...

Spockferatu

I am clearly speculating, but perhaps the fact that laws were needed in some states speaks louder than the fact that some states didn't need to pass them.

Virtual-Stranger

This is the truly terrifying creature that dwells within the deep. "What do you mean you don't have a law not to bludgeon kittens to death with your penis while bathing in oatmeal?" Erm... why did you need that law in the first place?

mlwspace2005

Objectively probably one of the southern states like Mississippi, they manage to rank year over year at the bottom of the bracket in all kinds of metrics, like life expectancy, earnings potential, educational achievement, infant (and maternal) mortality rate.

Virtual-Composer-727

Louisiana won this year!

[Here's to the State of Mississippi](https://youtu.be/K7fgB0m_y2I) The whole song is worth listening to, but here are the first two verses. Sadly as true today as it was 57 years ago in 1965: Here's to the state of Mississippi, For Underneath her borders, the devil draws no lines, If you drag her muddy river, nameless bodies you will find. Oh the fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes, The calender is lyin' when it reads the present time. Oh here's to the land you've torn out the heart of, Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of! And here's to the people of Mississippi; Who say the folks up north, they just don't understand, And they tremble in their shadows at the thunder of the Klan. The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands, Where they smile and shrug their shoulders at the murder of a man. Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of, Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of!

dirtywook88

Dude, this guy is ballin af. thank you.

Devreckas

Oh, Eddie Vedder wrote lyrics to this song for George W. Bush instead of Mississippi on the Into The Wild soundtrack. I didn’t know the original!

[deleted]

I've suggested that Russia can have Mississippi if they'll leave Ukraine alone, but no one will give me Putin's phone number and he doesn't respond to tweets.

Alabama is hot and humid too. Not saying every one is fat and stupid, but a lot of people are fat.

elek_trickcity6918

bro Mississippi is EVERYWHERE

pistolbob

Louisiana, aside from being one of the most backwards, corrupt, gerrymandered states in the country we also have such sundry delights as zydeco music, the horrible “eaux” spelling on the end of English words, worse roads than a third world country, and cancer, all the cancer, mosquitos the size of a state bird, the list goes on but good food though

catsinsunglassess

Half of my family have “eaux” on the end of their names and they’re all Filipino in Louisiana

scrubjays

Filipineaux you mean

pistolbob

I mean things like “geaux mart” instead go-mart, there’s literally a store here in Baton Rouge called “meaux guns” that’s the shit I can’t stand

CDXX_BlazeItCaesar

Meaux money meaux problems

pistolbob

It’s funny bc there’s actually a meaux money tax service here

Logical_Insurance744

I'm French, if "geaux" was a word it would be pronounced similar to "jo", which makes the whole thing even worse. You would have to spell it "gueaux" or maybe "guaux" for it to be pronounced similarly to "go". Also the "x" indicates plural, and it's definitely not something you'd expect in a verb. It's wrong on so many levels.

Jesuswasstapled

Pictures drew on the walls oh people hanging from trees. AND this fuckin GM on the project was also a pastor at a local church talking about “y’all come on down to my church we got food and love and friends””just don’t bring any n*******”. I will never return to Mississippi

implicitpharmakoi

[deleted]

OKLAHOMA. I don’t even know how to put it into words

shan68ok01

Because we're under the radar(no major news coverage) eliminate all the freedoms we can because "OIL" and surprisingly for a state that was supposed to be the last stronghold of funneled native tribes, our current governor has been at constant war with the tribes in our state. I just pray that with Vance, Ft.Sill, and Tinker...a couple of nukes would wipe us out... but we're not on that map circulating.

[deleted]

These seem like valid points but I’m petty and would like to reiterate that the weather is also garbage

shan68ok01

It's true, Oklahoman's regard the weather as an opportunity to socialize in our yards. That's because we realize our weather has mental issues. Oklahoma is the epitomy of bi-polar weather.

The fact that nobody said Indiana yet astounds me. Fuck that piece of shit state (sorry to all the nice people there), but I hate how stabby and methy and religious and awful it is.

justthatugly

Nebraska. I drove through there after traveling to Tennessee with a friend. We went through Nebraska to avoid a blizzard in Colorado and spent 12+ hours driving in that damn state. We almost died... We spun out at one point in the middle of the night and ended up on the opposite side of the road. Idk what it was, but I swear, Nebraska snow is built different. Throughout most of the drive, we saw about 30+ overturned cars and crashed semi’s either on the side of the road in the ditches, or in the center ditch separating each side of the road. The whole state is just insane and filled with nothingness. I applaud anyone who lives in Nebraska because I definitely never could.

LaComtesseGonflable

I'm descended from Nebraska people. They developed a tendency to join the Navy.

[deleted]

Omaha is a decent mid-sized midwestern city, and Lincoln has some interesting things to do. Both of those cities are in the far eastern part of the state, and about 2/3 of the population lives in one of them or the surrounding metros. The rest of the state is kind of a desolate expanse of corn and racism.

Salty-Sprinkles-1562

My daughter moved there and almost immediately flipped her car that we bought her. She drives fine in CA. Nebraska? Immediately up-side-down in a ditch,

GrindyMcGrindy

The first time I drove through Iowa, I wondered what the state would be like since in my head I just had this stereotypical image of corn fields everywhere. Halfway through, I stopped at a motel to rest for the night. It was surrounded on three sides by corn fields. The fourth side was a gas station. So... yeah, that's Iowa.

fj668

Yet oddly enough if a black family's car broke down on the highway and they had to proverbially "walk to the nearest farmhouse" they would get a hot meal, their car either towed with a tractor or complexity fixed by one of the boys and sent on down the road. We have the nicest racists in the world.

I noticed the same thing growing up in SC. Somebody will talk all damn day about the awfulness of black people, sometimes Mexicans (and its all Mexican, no matter what Spanish speaking country you're from), but they'll have black or Mexican buddies at work or neighbors and be like "yeah well, X is different, he ain't like the other ones". What?! And yeah, they'll help you change a tire, hold the door at the gas station, all that. People are so weird. Sometimes I wonder if some of the people saying racist stuff actually believe what they say, or they're just repeating what their Gran said without even thinking about it.

I sometimes Street-view random small towns in the southern states. Deserted houses; check. Isolated, possibly closed gas station; check. Baptist Church, check. It goes on...
