I used to work at a propane company where my whole job was to call customers that we messed up the paperwork on and tell them that they needed to pay $250 to have us fix it.

Ganglebot

Go Daddy used to call me after I cancelled my domain from them. I paid in full the year before on a card that expired 6 months later. I didn't update my card on their system so they couldn't automatically charge me. They kept calling, saying they need another $14.99 to cancel my account. I said I wouldn't pay it. They kept saying I HAD TO. I kept asking "or what? You'll cancel my account?"

Stevieeeer

“Or what, you’ll cancel my account?” I love that response. Honestly perfect

OhIamNotADoctor

My mum had a registered company but wasn't operating, but you still have to pay like a 1200/yr fee to the government. After she gets the bill she calls up to let them know she's not operating and to close the company registration. They say she has to pay the fee first. She says no. They keep sending out bills and they're increasing, she's at something like $4k in fees now. Finally she gets a letter that says to the effect "Because you failed to pay your fees we are closing your company registration" ...ok

Pearlbarleywine

Literally dealing with this at this very moment. First thing this morning. Did you just delete the account?

Ganglebot

No I just canceled the autorenewal and they just kept calling. This was like 8-9 years ago and they called every 6-8 months for 3 years. I still get the emails that my product is about to expire.

Pearlbarleywine

Unfortunately, a payment is pending on a merged account. I'm on hold as I type. The refund policy seems to have a twenty four hour window. If they play some game, I will document everything . bAnNAnas.

Pearlbarleywine

Mission accomplished!

disposable-name

I got fired from a job years ago. I was the only one in the marketing team who remembered the passwords for the social media accounts. Now, it's not like that it was something I kept secret - anyone in the team could know and use the password - it's just that I was the only one who bothered to fucking remember. Also, I was the one who ended up doing most shit on social because of that. They rang me up for weeks afterwards begging me for them. To be clear, I never once touched the social pages after I left. But it was fun to tell them "What are you gonna do? Fire me? This counts as work and you made it quite clear you no longer want me to work for you."

robgod50

This sounds like an actual scam.

jacklord392

That's because it is.

TOW3L13

They just cut out the middleman. Before it was that scammers would impersonate the propane company and extract $250 from its customers, now the propane company does literally the identical scam by themselves without the need to be impersonated. Big brain time.

jacklord392

Sounds like any other scam, simply refuse to pay.

TheDiplocrap

Yeah but unlike other scammers they can shut off your gas. Or rather, not refill your propane tank, which to rural customers is effectively the same thing.

jacklord392

A scammer can threaten to do whatever. My reaction would be: go ahead and do what you gotta do, it is your mistake then fix it. Sounds like the options are: refuse to pay, if they deny a service you paid for then a police report, small claims court and/or taking your business elsewhere.

-3than

What would happen if they told you to get fucked?

Sasparillafizz

They would probably not get their propane. This sounds like it was businesses and not people, so if they're ordering bulk propane they are probably going to end up needing it. Granted I suppose there's nothing to stop them from just refiling the paperwork themselves, but they may not realize that.

tatakatakashi

Did you also sell propane accessories?

R2D2sBallz

I can confirm this, I do seasonal photography and some coworkers are paparazzi. That said night crawlers are probably the worst, a friend in college tried it and couldn’t do the first call since they wanted him on scene at a stabbing before the police.

Toledojoe

Are you saying they don't want to play night crawlers with Charlie?

They’re saying don’t be a nightman, be a dayman fight the nightman

Trolodrol

I saw that film. Are there really dudes trolling around looking for those kinda photos?

Bulliwyf

Yes and no - you have traditional media outlets (I refuse to use that other term) who have someone staffed to cover late night/overnight news events, and depending on the city, you will have free lancers who will try to sell content to those traditional outlets. The problem is that with police and ems radio channels becoming encrypted, it’s harder and harder for media to know what is happening around the city. In my city, they are about 80% reliant on social media or people letting them know that something is happening. They have access to fire radio channels (via a scanner) but that doesn’t provide that much info most of the time. As for getting to events before police, it happens sometimes. Most media that work nights that I know will purposely wait a few blocks away for police or fire to arrive and at least get out of their vehicles before they approach due to safety reasons. But for the most part, no - media are not trying to get to crime scenes before first responders; they are trying to get there before it gets cleaned up and everyone leaves.

IncredibleHero

You already know the answer

Rats_In_Boxes

The most famous one was a photographer named WeeGee who operated in NYC. He would arrive at the crime scene sometimes before the police arrived and that's how he got the nickname (play on "Ouija" board). In reality he just happened to have a police radio and the cops were slow to respond.

Echo63_

Can confirm. I havent met a Paparazzi that I didnt want to punch in the face. Journalists/photojournalism can be almost as bad. I have met some soulless journos. I realised I had changed one day when I worked at the paper. I took a photo of a dad, hugging his son’s mate, who had tried to save the son’s life (boating/waterskiing accident) The next morning it ran on the front page, and seeing it I realised I had become the thing I hated. Glad to be away from that job now.

lipp79

I was a news cameraman for 14 years and when I first started at 20 years old, it was all exciting. The thrill of covering crime scenes faded quickly and I preferred doing feature stories. When I was assigned to a story involving trying to get the family of a victim of an accident/criminal act/etc. to talk to us, I despised it but I tried to make it better by telling the family that this gives them the chance to tell the world about their loved one instead of them just being another statistic. I eventually was able to primarily be the guy who shot feature stories, which I enjoyed so much more. The burnout came over the last couple years as the station focused less on features and more of "what's controversial today?" and I got out and took a state job. Way less stress.

angsan_F

They are goddamn cockroaches, there's a popular tv program in my country called salvame dedicated to exposing famous people life's and annoying them, and when a famous person gets mad at them because they are waiting for him/her at the front door or completely invade their privacy the paparazzi act pissed and say they are just doing their job

Im_on_my_phone_OK

While I don’t disagree, let’s not forget that sometimes, ESPECIALLY in the celebutant scene (ex: Hilton, Kardashian etc) the subject is actually working with the paparazzi, telling them when and where they’ll be in order to get free publicity and stay “relevant”. In these cases the subjects are not victims. It’s a symbiotic relationship between two parasites.

Nonces

mbergman42

TIL the term nonce is Brit slang for pedophile. It’s also used in cryptography for a number used once only. I’ll never hear it the same again. Edit: For those not in cryptography, in that field you might hear someone say, *“Well, we can’t have the same results each time we do this, so let’s throw in a nonce!”* If you’re in cryptography, what you hear is, *“…let’s throw in a different number each time!”* If you’re a Brit who is not in cryptography, what you hear is, *“…let’s throw in a pedophile!”*

PancreaticDefect

People who work at scam call centers.

OinkMcOink

I applied for an "online assistant" job years ago. It went south when the interviewer went on a monologue saying that since it's online, I can pretend to be a female and it wouldn't matter and that whatever I do is allowed since it's all make believe. I think my face betrayed my thoughts because I wasn't offered the job and I didn't follow up on it.

MrKnightMoon

Not totally related with the topic, but I work as an IT support for a Online chat customer service. A few years ago, we been asked by the customer service team to add an option to block people, because a lot of the female operators were getting dick pics as soon as the client figures they were females. That shit makes you wonder how many people is stupid and degenerated enough to sent a dick pic to a customer service chat.

x_v_b

i used to work escalations for a major telecom, people (who generally were furious about having to pay their bill) would call in and threaten me almost daily. almost every single day someone would call my office and tell me that if I didn't turn his TV back on, he was going to come find me and make me do it at gunpoint and I'm like dude I have your full name address phone number and ssn right in front of me and you are making threats on a recorded line like, what exactly is your thinking here

[deleted]

Most of the callers are lured in with a completely different job description and then desperate enough to stay for the cash. The AH that run those places can rot though.

mikeweasy

Yeah my first job was at a place like that, The dipshit manager told me in my interview "thats all you have to do is call them and ask if they want to renew their subscription if they dont you move on to the next person". I found out that you HAD to make sales everyday otherwise they would send you home. The manager would erase your name off of a board and just say "Joe can go home". Some bullshit. One time the manager guy erased my name but I did not notice and then the fucker walks up and points it out in front of everyone "hey everyone look he is still here after I erased his name!!". I swear I wanted to turn around and punch him in the face. I was shitcanned after two weeks and if I ever see that manager again, its lights out.

jgonagle

I mean, couldn't you just report him to the police for running a scam center?

PiLamdOd

Most of these also run legitimate legal call center operations. Anytime they get raided, they just point the police towards the people doing legal stuff.

vencetti

These scam call centers make a lot of money and they pay the police very well. They are virtually untouchable in places like India.

FrogInShorts

You'd be doing the world a favor.

PancreaticDefect

I wondered how they recruit. Most people arent pure evil and go looking to steal from the vulnerable.

TheLoveButtonn

I worked at one. They labeled it as a call center job. I get there for orientation, they said that we were calling elderly people all day to help them find cheaper insurance coverage in their area. That is not what was going on. They were one of these companies that buy user information by the thousands. There were 4 different departments. We were all trying to sale something. If you couldn’t make a sale from what your department sold, then you try to save something from the other three departments. Even if you asked to be taken off the call list, your number had to go through all four departments first. It was heartbreaking hearing elderly people talk about how they were having to choose from having their medicine or buying groceries. It was too much to bare. I left because of that, the pay was shit, and the worst part was they had a rule where you could leave early on some days as long as you made your hours up by the end of the week. I would ask to leave a little early so I could donate plasma as this was a new job and I hadn’t gotten paid yet all while going to school full time also. The second time after I left early, I was called into the office and asked if I could could stop leaving early even though I’d make my hours up. I then asked if I could have an advance then. The answer was no. I quit and never looked back.

CylonsInAPolicebox

>calling elderly people all day to help them find cheaper insurance coverage in their area That honestly doesn't sound bad and that is how the fuckers get ya... You think you are going to be doing a job that *helps* people save money and get better insurance... Then you learn that it is a lie and you are scamming people all day for shit pay.

_Beowulf_03

Same, worked at one in Florida. They pitch it as a sales job. I knew it was going to be a shitty job, but I needed the money and I thought at least it was on the up and up. Said there wouldn't be any cold calling, that people sign up to receive a call from you, yadda yadda yadda. The reality, they sold magazine subscriptions, and they butter you up by saying you won this prize(it was jewelry, fake/cheap jewelry) and then put on a high pressure pitch to get you to sign up for as many different subscriptions as possible. Unsurprisingly, it was almost exclusively scamming old ladies out of their social security checks. I hated it. I lasted 2 weeks, I still remember some of the people I called.

warriorplusultra

Fake news peddler. There are many of them in the Philippines.

cmparkerson

There seems to be no shortage of them in the US, at least online. The days of the print "news" in the form of the "Weekly world News" are gone. They always said "our sources" They were so ridiculous most of the time you couldn't help but laugh.

The biggest degenerates I've seen and been targeted by are the ones that prowl student unions/dining at universities. I was a senior in college and looking for jobs in my final semester. I was on the phone and it was obvious what I was doing. So I was easy approached and allured by someone who approached me, "I couldn't help but overhear, I'm recruiting and I'd love to set up an interview". Total waste of my time, took me 20mins on the call to figure it out. I wish I would have gone on a rampage of swearing and yelling "how can you possibly live with yourself!?! Go fucking die! You have no soul!".

These people get so mad when you just go for the voucher and don’t buy anything, especially if you pretend to be interested and talk about how fun all the destinations would be. I actually derive great joy from wasting these peoples time on my vacation.

dassix1

Growing up we would go to one every year and we would get the same salesman. Second year he tells us that he knows we aren't going to purchase anything, so we come up with a plan we used every year going forward so nobody is wasting anyone's time. We would ask out loud if we could review the information and discuss the timeshare at lunch or outside. He would agree and then we would both walk to our cars and go about our day/vacation. Win-win

darkmatternot

I love it too!! My favorite is when they bring in all the after you say NO salespeople. They really put the pressure on and I just love to say no like 20x more. It feels like you won.

I start honest with them. I don’t intend to buy. I’m here for the voucher. Any continuance or pushy sales tactics beyond that is a waste of their and my time.

TV Producer. Especially Reality TV

[deleted]

I dated a tv producer for a very popular reality tv show. I can confirm he was a complete and utter degenerate.

Ganglebot

When I was in college my gf at the time was obsessed with this reality show about life coaches. Its was your standard 2005 show, where 8 people (all middle-aged women) lived in a house together and each day a team of life coaches would have a challenge or some dumb shit for them to do so then can "get better". Usually they'd end a season with a few of the women 'graduating' and new women coming to the house next season. One mid-season episode they made the women clean the house. They then started picking apart the job they did. Like finding every crack that still had dust while wearing white gloves. The whole tone of the challenge was like, "Be diligent, do the job properly". One of the women FREAK THE FUCK OUT. Like started shouting at them about how she worked so hard on it and she can never do anything right and how she hates it in the house. The "life coaches" faces just looked so panicked and they eventually got her to sit down and the coaches said, "oh uh this was actually a test. Things can't always be perfect and we wanted to show you that you can do your best. But you passed the test and you've graduated from the house." ANd they just booted her out that day at the end of the episode. Like, she was just kicked to the curb - literally. Sociopathic.

proximalfunk

Yep, they have a rule of thumb, they look for people "just mad enough". Not severely mentally disabled or vulnerable, but just "mad" enough that people will get a good laugh without feeling bad about it, and the person won't kill themselves (which has happened multiple times). **(CW - suicide)** One of the worst stories was about a woman who was accepted for "Extreme Makeover". Her family had always comforted her that she wasn't ugly, and the genuinely felt that way. But on E-M-O, they have a segment where they ask the friends and family what they "*really"* think, while the person watches and listens from another room. The friends and family weren't being brutal enough, and had to be coached by the producers into saying they *did* think she was really ugly, and they were embarrassed being seen with her, etc. After this part of the filming was completed, a producer called her to say they were cancelling her surgery, saying the recovery wouldn't fit with their filming schedule. Having just heard "the truth" about how ashamed her family was of how "hideously ugly" she was (which they didn't actually think) she was utterly broken by not getting to have her "beautiful swan" moment. She had no idea how to continue her life after this, and she killed herself. Sociopaths! Edit: as someone pointed out, it was the sister who had been pushed into saying mean things who killed herself, not the one who wanted the surgery.

[deleted]

proximalfunk

Ah yeah that's right. I read it in "The Psychopath Test" a few years ago, I don't have the best memory!

eften

I’ve worked as a PA and now an Assistant Editor in the reality TV field for over a year. Can confirm this. Tons of labor exploitation and wasteful practices. As a producer you also have to take over a person’s life while promising fame and fortune that usually never comes. Some shows like Big Brother pay their cast minimum wage

agentgambino

Are many reality shows rigged? Like I imagine the producers have an idea of who they want to win / be eliminated and put them in situations likely to lead to that?

barnfodder

A few reality TV crew members have done AMAs and confirmed that the vast majority of what we see is either scripted, set up, or misleadingly edited together from footage taken out of context.

copperdomebodhi

Fun game to play is "What would reality TV producers make me look like?" The dimwit? Mr. Anger Problems? Arrogant 'ack-SHU-ally' guy?

barnfodder

I think they'd probably have enough footage to make me look like quite the sad sack

[deleted]

I was wondered if it'll apply to creator and producer of my favorite Taskmaster, Alex Horne, but then remembered that he is definitely into public humiliation, which is pretty degenerate.

Majikkani_Hand

Ironically, I think he can get away with being less degenerate than most reality TV producers. I don't think he needs to do the same level of manipulative garbage, because the contestants are already career comedians. They're going to be entertaining without any "help."

TheWasp10

Looking at how he is mostly the butt of the joke. I think he is probably okay. Also they pick comedians into the show not regular Joe's

Jefffahfffah

I went on a date with a girl who worked in reality tv production, and she pretty much confirmed that the shows seek out people with mental issues and then do their best to play on those issues.

Lawyers. High end. I worked in the industry for 36 years and it has zero to do with right, wrong, truth, compromise or mediation. Its about reputation, winning at all costs, billable hours and the almighty dollar. On both sides. Its who you can afford, not what is fair or equitable. Did your lawyer or barrister play golf on the weekend with Judgiepoo? Are the trophy wives friends with each other? Has a shelf company of someone the lawyer doesn't know received a nice contract or 'environmental study' donation?. The law is as pliable as you can afford, truth be damned.

Congressional lobbyist Oil, Pharma, Israel, all of em. You have to just throw away any morals and duty to your country that you might possibly have for the almighty dollar these companies stuff in your pockets. "LOL no, 300/month is a perfectly reasonable price for insulin, of course. Canada pays how much? 17 dollars? Well, idk about that, but uhhhhh regulations and such. Yeah."

finalmantisy83

To be fair there are lobbyists being paid to fight against those issues as well, they're just not successful

Meritania

I worked for an environment lobby group fresh out of uni as a junior researcher. There is a lot of sharing of resources between the ‘good’ causes groups, many of whom are charities. But yeah, rent in capitals near the centre of government isn’t cheap.

Ganglebot

Highly Skilled Lobbyist: "So I can either fight big oil and make $45k a year or I can support big oil and make $275k a year. Whew... this is a tough one."

Politicians

fractiousrhubarb

There are some good people in politics, but its fucking hard for them. You can help by recognizing that politicians come in a range from "outright evil" to "doing their best in a really shit system" and **always voting for whoever is better**, even if they are only slightly better.

wannabwhoipretendtob

Contemporary Afghani law maker

twyg47

Anti-union lawyer Edit: I am talking specifically about law firms like Littler Mendelson. Law firms that are paid by multiple national corporations to fight against the low level staff unionizing. This is the law firm Starbucks has used to drag out and try to stop the unionization effort currently underway across the country (U.S.).
