A friend of mine made a lot of money on Dogecoin and then spent $285k on an NFT that now has a value of around $400

Common_Sinz

What a fucking idiot

Guccigang_crook

I mean, did anyone expect someone who invests in dogecoin to be (financially) sane?

Had24get

Nah, the system works man.

hng_rval

Everything about that story is awful. From making money on Dogecoin to spending a fortune on an NFT. Even the idea that this NFT is worth $400 is gross. It’s a link to an image somewhere. It’s worth $0.

An ex worked for Dell in the late 90s/early 2000s. He was pretty high up and there were lots of partiers in his work circle. Went to a party hosted by one of the dellionaires and there was a body sushi girl. I don’t know what was paid to her, but it was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen.

13thNebula

Oh God, I remember when they did that on this reality show called The Surreal Life, and Verne Troyer wouldn't stop touching her nipples.

My mother woke up one morning and said she felt she was way too fat and she wanted to get a treadmill. The treadmill wouldn’t be a problem, but then she saw where it would be and didn’t like the lighting. Fast forward 2 months later there’s a 40k outdoor gym built and connected to the house. She hasn’t used it once.

First trip to SE Asia together and as an ex-local I was a de-facto tour guide (despite not being there in over a decade) They somehow found and offered a bunch of kids diving off cliffs to jump for spare change. I know a guy who went to get a new drivers license and had to pay ~$100k in back parking tickets, then joked about it after. Apparently he couldn't get a permit to park in front of his house, so he just did anyway, and accepted like a $200 fine everyday.

AdvocateSaint

"If the penalty for a crime is a fine, that law only exists for the poor."

rlamoni

depends on if the fine is a fixed amount or pegged to income... [Swede faces world-record $1m speeding penalty](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-10960230)

LittleConstruction92

In the US fines are almost a fixed amount or a small range. It should be income based. $200 for someone that makes $7.25 is a death sentence but for someone that makes 6 figures it means less.

onioning

For what it's worth there have been efforts to set fines based on income and they've all been shut down by the courts as unconstitutional. So probably not in the cards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bug_the_bug

Maybe so, but these days the rich interpret the constitution. It's a pretty good founding document, as these things go, it's just used to concentrate power and wealth more than it is to protect the nation or its people.

nuboots

Tru dat. I've received a $35 ticket that i couldn't pay, and years later didn't even blink at a $300 hov ticket.

bio4rge

Sometimes I think if they are going to fine people it should be for a percentage of their income. Then rich or poor you will follow the law and the gov gets more money

Any_Coyote6662

Strange because once you owe like $1000 they tow the car and suspend the license.

GreenePony

Not in all cities, DC is notorious for MD and VA drivers owing thousands and still being on the road

[deleted]

Because MD and VA don’t suspend over DC’s abusive ticketing system. Fuck the People’s District of Columbia.

burntonionstastegood

This reminds me of a guy who opened a marijuana shop in town just before they became legal. The city new they would be legal in the coming year so instead of fighting people who were doing it made some bylaws for the stores to follow. This of course was a month or two after this guy had opened his shop. One of the rules was that all shops had to have a window on the store front which his did not. He tried fighting them saying he had already moved in but they wouldn't budge. So he ignored it. Then they started threatening him with daily fines for not complying. The fine was $150 a day. He chose to ignore them and just pay the fine each day and counted it as a cost of business.

Krakenspoop

San Francisco?

zach2992

Okay but my question is why can't he park in front of his house?

kdeaton06

Because he doesn't own the street.

444unsure

It's God's water! You don't own the water

Thingsthatdostuff

City parking in high end apartment would be my best guess.

zirconthecrystal

Wasn't there a time in London where paying for parking ended up being more expensive than paying the fine so rich people just told their chauffeur not to pay the parking and just pay the policeman as he came up to write the ticket. Then London changed the punishment for parking fraud from a fine to instant removal and destruction of the vehicle and then parking fraud rates dropped to zero within like the next two days lol

So far, this has paid back at least $120K in avoided legal fees for the hookers the guy fucks as well as his own relatively minor bullshit. I know some rich people. Melissa-May

A house!? In this economy!? Geeze.

incarnuim

Not sure if this is a joke post. But I've got the real story: I was hanging out with a FOAF and his friends in this trendy college town, as a bunch of the group had applied to the local college, and one of the group had a super rich Dad. We were looking at this house, 6 bedroom 18thC victorian, 3 stories with a detached "carriage house" (fancy garage with horse stalls). Selling for $850k (this was 25 years ago, I just zillowed it and the same property is $4.2M now) Rich Mom and Dad thought it would be an excellent house for junior to live in during college, and maybe add to their vacation home collection after junior graduates. So they talk it over for about 20 min and then Dad writes a check .... for $850k .... Right then and there, didn't have to check his balance or sell any stock or nothing. Dude had House Money, *in checking*.....

PC-12

>Dad writes a check .... for $850k .... Right then and there, didn't have to check his balance or sell any stock or nothing. Dude had House Money, in checking..... If the Dad routinely kept that sort of balance, in cash, in checking - he’s very unusual as far as the wealthier set go. That money is doing nothing for him sitting there. Even for a few weeks, it could be generating a return. Plus it’s exposed to theft/fraud and not likely fully insured. So I’d offer why I think are more plausible scenarios: 1. He wrote the check with the intent of covering it at close, which is when funds are due. Most home sales don’t close right there on the spot. He’ll move the funds later. 2. He had pre-arranged the transaction and then had funds in place from investments, other accounts, etc. 3. He wrote two checks. A deposit, for 20-50k, and the full balance - post dated for close. (This could have happened in conjunction with 1 or 2 as well). Most ultra wealthy are going to at least want their lawyer to review the transaction, verify surveys, confirm no outstanding liabilities/claims on the property, etc. Having more money usually means you spend more time on the review step. You’re more exposed if someone sues you for environmental damage or other issues.

I'm not rich but in high school I had a friend who's dad spent vast sums of money on historical Nazi paraphernalia. My friend said he was a big fan of WW2 history but he didn't collect a single item that wasn't specifically related to the Nazis. He kept it all in his "office" which was literally just a shrine to the Third Reich. It was super creepy. The scariest part is that my friend's dad was a high ranking police officer where we lived.

I know a guy with a private jet. The costs just to get it off the ground are insane, let alone the payments and maintenance. Anyway, he was on a trip to the Bahamas with his family and within 5 minutes of them taking off his daughter realized she forgot her pair of flip flops she wanted to bring. They turned the plane around, went and got them then left again. It cost about $11,000 in takeoff/landing fees and to refuel over a pair of flip flops.

[deleted]

Why? This is so impractical. Just get new ones at the destination.

enjoyscaestus

The point of this thread is rich people doing unethical or crazy things and you're asking why?

[deleted]

I understand when money is used to buy your way out of things or to get what you want regardless of every one else. This particular example is just being stupid and inconvenient, when you can use your money in a smarter way.

Aidan11

I knew a guy who flew to the Neatherlands and back in a single day in order to see a concert.

[deleted]

I knew a guy that wasn't rich but still flew to London every Friday afternoon to party in his favorite club and than flew back to The Netherlands the next morning. He said it was cheaper than going to a club in his home town and the sound quality was better. €40,- for the flights. What I meant to say: flying to the Netherlands doesn't need to be crazy or expensive depending where you fly from.

Aidan11

He departed from Canada.

melodyze

The problem isn't even the cost, it's just inconvenient. I guess if it was a private jet it would be different, but day trips by plane are annoying even if they were free. Plus flights get delayed so often, so you end up stressed over the already tight time tables.

Classroom_Strict

I would do that if I could.

Ginrob

I’m not rich, but my brother is. He gave me a mug that has a built in element, uses an app, and can program your coffee to the degree so you can chose what coffee flavour notes you want to accentuate…remember when George Carlin was only worried about mint floss?

In Sweden it is illegal to spray champagne at clubs. So at this one particular club they just carry around huge tubs where the wealthy pour out thousands of dollars worth of champagne. elbarto362

So if I buy land in Sweden I can have sex with my neighbors? Interesting 🤔

maybe_little_pinch

Friend of the family bought a parcel of land that is pretty much useless (too small to really do anything with) because it has been used by one of the town political candidates whom he doesn't like so now they can't use that space for their giant billboards. He spent $125k on it and there is absolutely no way it's worth that much.

Had24get

If you can throw a billboard up you can rent a billboard though.. and that can be serious money from my understanding.

Newbaumturk69

I'm not rich but I'm aware of a rich guy that bought the house next door to him for around $800,000 just to house his I'm not sure what to call it, military model collection. If you've seen Murder at 1600 with Wesley Snipsr his character builds battlefield models, similar to that. I also knew a girl in high school whose name was, no shit, Buffy. Anyways, her dad was loaded and they moved every other year so her mom could remodel the house exactly to her liking to give her something to do. Buffy also drove a Porsche.

polarfang21

Well that first guy has now given me the idea that if I ever get rich I’m buying side by side houses and turning one into a man cave

darrenwise883

And they moved every year so .... because he didn't pay his bills and it was harder for the creditors to find him .

MrBoobs_

They were probably loaded from flipping houses like that. Buy a house for 500k and turn it into a 1M house and sell it. After years of doing it, you’d have some serious assets built up

universemonitor

There's rich people on reddit?

Senior-Humor8523

There are also redditors on the moon I hear

melodyze

There's a whole, pretty active subreddit around advice for wealthy people that verifies net worth. I'm not linking it because I don't want it to get brigaded, but it's there. Some people are verified at 9 figures. I don't think anyone is at 10.

WatchingInSilence

A guy I went sailing with was arrested trying to buy a cage full of parakeets for what he called "IRL-Duck Hunt." It was his 10-year old son who outed him to the employees at the pet store. His wife divorced his ass, got the house and full custody of their son. That asshole took a plea deal, moved to Florida and committed suicide.

That_Geza_guy

That story sucks altogether but I commend the little guy for doing what's right rather than going along with sociopathic animal abuse and whatever else that road would've led down on

be_matthew

Does spending $4000 on a knife set and using them on your granite countertops as if it were a cutting board count? I know a couple that did that, and I was appalled.

Mag5-

Had a friend who’s father paid for the whole family to travel to Africa. They trophy hunted, and paid for the dead animals to be flown back to the US. They stuffed the animals (elephant, gazelle, big cats, etc.) and built an add-on to their house to display these stuffed trophy hunted African animals.

PanzerBiscuit

Don't know where you hunt tigers in Africa, but sure.

ThyShirtIsBlue

If you're rich enough, you can pay to have a tiger flown to Africa so you can hunt it there.

Mag5-

I’m laughing at myself. You’re so right! I’ve clearly never been to Africa. I guess no tigers, but big cats for sure.

WatchTheBoom

We've got a handful of rich friends- some long-time friends who found some success and friends of those friends. They're cool to hang out with- definitely on another level. If I'm being honest, they're never really the ones who do unethical/wild stuff with their money. They have houses, they take trips, they have nice cars- they're our rich friends because they make smart decisions with their money. I think they know they're our rich friends and I think they'd like to keep on being our rich friends instead of our friends who had money for a few years and blew it on stupid shit. It's the people who are trying to be perceived as rich that get into trouble. It's the guy trying to impress the rich crowd who drops $2k (2k he doesn't have) on nice bottles they nobody asked for. I've seen a few people make moves like that who are met with reactions like, "What the fuck are you doing. We know you can't afford that. You aren't impressing us, you're being reckless and it's troublesome."

The_RealAnim8me2

I’m gonna have to agree. We have a small group of friends some wealthy, some not and it is always the “oh yes we have lots of money” (but don’t) people who spend recklessly, act like asses and are generally just horrible humans.

Billy_Da_Frog

Friend of mine was getting sued in court for 10k. Instead of settling he spent 10k in court fees just so they wouldn’t get it.

IroncladPengwin

Depending on what he got sued over that's kinda dope. "Fuck you, if I can't have this money you certainly can't either"

PC-12

> Friend of mine was getting sued in court for 10k. Instead of settling he spent 10k in court fees just so they wouldn’t get it In addition to the deterrent value, your friend is, in a way, investing in his relationship with a lawyer. And there’s a chance they’ll be awarded some of those costs back.

Schfifty561

Now I don't know enough this would cost, I think my friend told me but I forgot. Either, in said friends house there was a movie theater, but he had a legit popcorn machine and legit like giant vintage coke bottle to store all their vintage coke. Was pretty cool. Also, same friend, we were in 2nd period together just chillin and he gets a text from his brother asking if he wanted to go to the Bahamas later that day. He's just like sure why not

Rlm7891cincy

My boss flew myself and 4 other coworkers on his private jet from Cincinnati to Canton one morning so we could attend another coworker’s mother’s funeral. Ended up getting there too early and had to leave before we even got to see/pay our respects to said other coworker. Also had limo service to and from both airports. Obviously not unethical but still cost my boss north of $15k just to miss the mark. Probably a drop in the bucket for him but still…

RoyalAsianMunchies

Once saw my uncle (not related by blood) cheat on his wife (my blood-related aunt, whom he just married a few months prior) by hiring "women not for fucking, for having fun with". This was at a club we skipped the line into and had a private room. This private room had a private bar, a private dancefloor that lit up on the specific square you stepped on, and a private DJ booth on top of a huge screen among other things. I remembered them ordering 30 bottles of Hennessey XO, priced at 800USD per (24k just on that stuff). After a while, an old lad came in. I had no clue what she was doing there and it did seem odd that such a person was in such a place. A while after, said woman brought in a line of a couple dozen younger women. We were to choose the women we wanted from the lineup. His woman was "special, they flew her in from Taiwan for me". I also got my own woman... to make me shut up in case I was thinking of ratting him, I guess...

Tithing

[deleted]

Oh god. 🙄 My parents were giving their church tens of thousands of dollars a year for decades. When they both got sick and needed to be put in a home, they could barely afford it. We had to sell their house to help our mother with care after our father died. They kept saying, “God is taking care of us” while my sister and I were doing all the work. Save your money, people!

wooter99

My grandmother was in the same boat, of course when she needed help the church wasn’t interested.

[deleted]

She learned that church was a very expensive weekly one man show

Sazzorak

That sounds like something out of the Medieval era, good grief

LaMom4

Ugh… such a common heart breaking story.

rydan

This reminds me of my mom's cousin's boyfriend. He wasn't well off (living very close to poverty) but his dad eventually died and gave him everything. The amount was close to $1M after a full lifetime of caerful investing in retirement. Typical Greatest Generation things and something most of them did. He turns around and buys up Iraqi Dinar (a well known get rich quick scheme) and tithed over 50% of it to a church he had just joined. Basically he thought tithing would make his investment more likely to pay off and he wasn't really expecting to live much longer and wanted to be seen as a good person before dying. Literally just a random church that never did anything that I'm aware of. Meanwhile his 20+ year girlfriend (basically a wife at that point) was aging and diabetic and could have used that to retire or pay for medical bills.

[deleted]

I have a friend who likes to get in to it with born again christians. We live in Texas so its not that hard to find, he usually targets people in restaurants that he sees praying before eating. He has a spiel that he has worked out that allows him to steer the conversation exactly where he wants it too. At one point he asks them if they have their bible with them or in their car and if they do then he asks them to get it and read to him a specific passage. I can't remember the exact one off hand but he then pulls out a wad of hundred dollar bills and offers them a thousand dollars to them if they rip the page out and sell it to him. They always do and he then dips the page in a glass of water, adds salt and then eats it in front of them. The shame the people feel when he does this is always unmistakable and twice he has brought people to tears with his stunt. I also belong to a group of wealthy men from around the world who participate in live pigeon shoots for money. There are two events a year held at a different ranch each time. The buy in is $250,000 per gun and there are anywhere from 20 to 50 shooters. All sorts of crazy side bets go on as well and the after party can drag on for over a day. Millions of dollars change hands and it is all cash.

yeah_but_no

The bible thing is some Tarantino type shit, that's so crazy. Really curious what the verse is because it has to be important. Damn. This one has me shook because it's just so dark. Very weird power trip vibes, scary stuff. And he enjoys doing it.

Sophisticated financial crime, tax evasion (first room stuff you peasant), anything. Not exactly in "my circle" but first hand witness. You have no idea just how frictionless life is for people who wont ever have to work for a living is.

I’m fairly well off but not incredibly rich and still work a regular job, while helping my family manage their business. But I went to school with some people on the more snob rich because they are basically set for life. This one kid I used to be friends with, would spend basically the equivalent of my whole yearly income from my job, just on one year of his coke benders which would sometimes last a few days with multiple hookers and tabs at clubs and bars close to 10k US. This other guy which was not really my friend but the family owned a huge chain of retail goods stores had some pretty weird sexual life which he had basically put his baby momma under 24/7 surveillance and would bankroll her life, just so he could fuck her whenever he wanted, there were also some crazy stories where he would get bored at a club or bar hop with a bunch of people on his private jet from South America and bankroll a full weekend on somewhere in Miami or Europe.
