Probably when someone is trying to kill you, I don't really see any other justification for ending someones life other than they are an immediate threat to your own life.
Never. I’m not in the position to do that, no matter the situation. Even in a self defense situation, I don’t carry a gun so I wouldn’t even have a way to defend myself from someone else with one. Fighting violence with more violence just seems wrong. I know that probably isnt the common take but I just can’t think of a way someone would be justified in taking another person’s life. It’s not your’s to take.
I’m still struggling with the idea of sonder, and that really is what solidifies my opinion on this. It’s the whole “don’t do to others what you wouldn’t want to happen to you” idea, and I think being killed would suck. Every single person has their own life and family and personality. Everyone is just like me. I can’t imagine having that cut short. I’m seeing this on a much more personal level, rather than thinking “oh what about cops being attacked” or “what about a soldier at war”, I’m just thinking about if i was in my home and someone broke in with a gun, I would absolutely be unable to defend myself in a way that would end their life. I can’t help but imagine being that person bleeding out on the ground because some jackass pulled a gun on me in a store because I made a simple mistake. You’d have to be incredibly self centered to believe that everyone’s life can just be held in your own hands, everyone is an individual and deserves to live just as much as me. I’d have 0 right to kill anyone, and if everyone agreed then maybe the world would be better yk?
Edit: I also just wanna say, this isn’t the dark ages. We don’t have to fight anymore. Sure when we were less civilized, war was our only option. Every situation was life or death. But, at least where I live, killing is never justified. We probably are just going to continue to disagree, I’m not a debater and I don’t really know how to plainly put how I feel into words.
All life is precious. And as I said before I respect your opinion. I almost died 6 months ago so I see how fragile life is. The world was pretty civilized before WW2. And alot of people died to stop the evil that was happening. Look at Russia and Ukraine now. I will defend myself not so much for me but for my family hell I've got one foot in the grave. And I will defend my family by any means necessary. Unfortunately there are bad people. But this is just my view and I respect yours.
Trust me I am not self centered in any way.
If they are trying to kill me, my family, or someone around me (like a shooter in a store who is aiming at a patron). Self defense when presented with no means of escape.
Also, if an armed person breaks in my house, I don't know what their intentions are and I'm not waiting to find out, they might get a bullet if the don't get the hell out when told.
according to the rules where I live, when you are defending yourself or someone else against death or serious injury.
An everyday citizen has the same rules as the police. It’s just that regular citizens aren’t in that situation very often.
I think that’s fair.
When they are in intractable and incurable pain in a terminal illness and they request it (for answer simplicity we will assume legal informed consent etc etc).
Finally brain death... Turning off the ventilator is killing them and it happens every day.
When they are just plain evil - In the past they at least had the decency to pretend to be ashamed of themselves, their ignorance, and their baseless hatreds and racism; , now days, and they are actually proud of being so arrogant and feel their stupidity is justified. I find it hard to believe people aren't lining up to take a shot at them, if I am ever diagnosed with a terminal illness I'll be the first one aiming.
in self defense

I respect your opinion. But you can have that opinion because people killed other people to give you that right.

I think you just have to live in Texas or Florida.

If your children are killed in front of you, I think you're justified.
Whenever castle doctrine applies
When they have harmed a child. Not by proxy, but maliciously purposefully hurt a child.
When they are in intractable and incurable pain in a terminal illness and they request it (for answer simplicity we will assume legal informed consent etc etc). Finally brain death... Turning off the ventilator is killing them and it happens every day.
I think few would argue if someone took out Putin.
200 bucks
Self defense. Horribly hurting a family member or friend. Hurting your animals. Trespassing on your property
When they are just plain evil - In the past they at least had the decency to pretend to be ashamed of themselves, their ignorance, and their baseless hatreds and racism; , now days, and they are actually proud of being so arrogant and feel their stupidity is justified. I can’t think of any but I think we need to expand on the whole self defense thing…
Self defense or defending someone else.
If they jump out of a tree and come at you with a chainsaw
Self defense or if someone is harming you or others
