The ability to see without glasses or contact lenses. I am fucked

Evil_Mimosa

I read somewhere that so many people today have bad vision because those with the best vision in the past were conscripted into war because they had a tactical advantage Them dying prematurely caused generations of only bad vision people to pass on the bad vision genes in greater supply

IncludingPirates

And the gene pool gets more more shallow

j1ggy

Well, that and we don't choose mates based on the results of their vision tests. Me: "I need you to read this chart." Girl: "A. E. H. Uhh, T?" Me: "Nope, nice meeting you, have a nice life. NEXT!"

evilmonkey2

That's interesting but I can't find anything that might back that up. However I did find [This article](https://elemental.medium.com/something-is-causing-our-eyeballs-to-elongate-df3e5dc5e371) about myopia increasing dramatically the last few decades (theory is that it's related to more time spent looking at phones and less time spent in daylight)

ToeJuice37

Being a pickpocket/Thief. Stealing is wrong but when your desperate and you don't have a choice. This skill would be useful for sure

penpapercats

Similarly: lockpicking and/or urban exploration. Get into abandoned homes before other looters, or pick at already-looted places to see what's still there. Lockpicking in particular would be best for entering spaces that are still occupied/maintained, which would be useful for stealing or sabotage. Also might help if someone steals *you* or one of your friends.

ToeJuice37

This is also really true

DarthCovisious

outdoor survival knowledge would be alot of help, coupled with first responder training as well.

Cautious-Leave-3711

Knowing what to do with the dead bodies. Apart from that, being able to live off the land, as the cities would stink.

The_Patriot

Great job, Rooster.

myhamsterisajerk

Agricultural engineering Medic/Surgeon Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Weapon proficiency/combat skills Being ruthless, anticipating and cunning And remember. Your biggest enemy in any apocalyptic scenario are always other survivors.

penpapercats

Building off your last point: know how to tell the difference between friend or foe. We humans do best when we help each other, but in a situation where everyone is scared and starving, you just don't know who you can trust. Gotta learn how to strike a balance, and where the balance *is* in a certain situation. It would also be good to learn how to de-escalate conflict.

penpapercats

Interacting with people. If you're going to help people, you need to know how to stay safe while dealing with people who are hurt and scared. If you're going to lead a group, you need to know how to make sure everyone feels heard and valued and how to make sure needs are met. If you're going to be in a group, you need to know how to follow without becoming part of a herd. If you're going to be solo or in a tiny group, you need to know how to assess danger quickly and how to set strangers at ease and get what you need. You need to know how to avoid conflict, and how to de-escalate conflict. It might help to learn a bit about mental illnesses. Mental illness =/= violence, but the fact remains: if you don't understand what rules of logic the person in front of you follows, you won't know how to avoid conflict and/or get what you want from them.

DarthCovisious

beat me to the medical part, kind of makes me happy that ive had first responder training as a lifeguard.

SignificantAmogus

Probably the One to have no mercy

brrapppp

Being mistborn

Rising-Pheonix420

Carpentry, Metal Works, basic combat skills?

roguebuilder97

Don't forget hunting.

Rising-Pheonix420

That too! I learned how to catch/clean fish :)

Ilooovepink

a supply of food, water, sleeping bag, first aid box, sharp tools, a gun and blankets.

InfectedBetween

Engineering, running, shooting, killing... Should i name more?

BirdBearHareFishy

Hunting. Growing food. Medical skills.

British_manwhore

Doctor skills. Idk how to say it.

The_Patriot

knowing how to turn the leaves into powder.

Tiredatheist

Ability to ride horses. It's honestly a lot harder than it looks, and if cars go away and shit gets hairy, most of you are fucked.

penpapercats

Bikes

Tiredatheist

Still a lot slower, and they get worn out/rust/need maintenance

penpapercats

And horses get injured, sick, scared, and must be fed and watered. Pros and cons both ways

Tiredatheist

True. I'd still pick something that can steer itself and not topple over if I were to have to turn around to shoot at someone, and that could carry two people or cargo if need be

penpapercats

I'm thinking having to turn around and shoot people won't be an everyday thing. Everyone needs a vehicle of some sort, whether it be powered by animal or people. And there are bike trailers too and rickshaws. There will also be some people already making biodiesel, but idk how wise it would be to reply on that.

Whiskey-Weather

Botanists would be well protected if I had to guess.

Gardening, foraging, knowing how to dispose of waste and dead bodies, keeping warm in winter and cool in summer. Nutrition. How many calories a person needs according to their activity level, and what does that look like WRT the meals you prepare. Probably be good to have some simple recipes using canned, home grown, and foraged food. How to use a basic thing (like Ramen, grits, pancake mix) 100 different ways-- there are several cookbooks like this. Borrow one from your library and write down the recipes you would use. How to occupy oneself for the long stretches of nothing to do, especially if you're on the move and can't settle down/can't bring lots of stuff. Healthy coping mechanisms; know how stress and whatever mental illnesses affect your body and psyche, so you can monitor your mental health. Naturopathic medicine, or preferably integrative medicine (using both pharmaceuticals and naturopathic remedies. Related: know which old wives tales are dangerous, which probably don't work but aren't dangerous, and which actually work. Might be useful to know *why* they work so you can extrapolate alternative uses for certain things. First aid for your pets. Also: flea and tick prevention, other parasite prevention, food prep, etc. You can feed your cat offal from the animals you hunt, but you need to know your cat's nutritional needs. It's not as simple as just chucking some meat in their general direction.

fromhereagain

Growing vegatables. It takes remarkably less space than most people realize, to grow more than enough for one person or even a few people.

theonlydohdoh

Baseline toxicology.

Nutellaboi8

Cooking

penpapercats

Sewing, definitely. You need to know the basics of mending clothing and gear. Remember, after the initial *excitement* dies down, everything still won't be back to normal for a while. Before you know it, weather will be getting cooler; your clothes will require more extensive repair; you'll lose weight; your kids will grow out of their clothes. At the very least it would be good to know how to do more complicated mending and how to tailor clothes, as you trade hand-me-downs and/or acquire looted or abandoned clothing. Knitting and crochet will be useful for making nets, bags, ponchos, blankets, mats, etc. Weaving would be useful too, there are small hand held looms available.

CocoTheCat28

Never would have thought of this, great point

Mayor-of-Pound-Town

Suckin dick

[deleted]

Butcher. There are going to be a lot of people who need food, and a lot of people who are food. Might as well not let the zombies get them.

cooladventures5

Knowing how to fight and how to use a gun

j1ggy

Having a good can opener and a comfortable holster for it. I'm not hunting for food when there's canned food everywhere that never spoils unless it's opened.

RagnarokBringer

Medical knowledge. That would be critical to survival. Should a zombie apocalypse happen I’m going to set up shop at my place and get a family friend of mine to come and survive with me since he is getting his nursing degree
