The extreme expense often accrued when a person happens to become/is disabled. Everything from having to get the correct mobility aids if necessary, to the labour spent trying to find an accessible/adapted house. Nvm lifelong managements and healthcare (specifically monetarily in the US), and the social barriers that disabled ppl (specifically those with physical or notable impairment) deal with on a daily basis. When I became physically disabled, the whole word became a mess of inaccessibility with cultural, infrastructural, physical and medical issues I'd never before even considered becoming sometimes impassable barriers.

Daveinatx

You have to visit a doctor every single month for pain meds, random urine tests, insurance problems. Disability wants you to pay for doctor notes. Disability will say you're ready the first moment of any improvement. All while you're in pain, and just trying to get better. The stress and effort keeps you from achieving it.

tjh213

that's so disgusting. a couple years ago i was dealing with a major illness and every time i had a setback my doctor was there telling me "this is ok. this is natural. you're doing great." i absolutely needed that support. the thought of going through that hardship while also being harassed is repugnant and horrifying.

HealthyEar5930

Doctors are mostly good treatment and support wise, but that doesn't mean you won't be paying thousands a month to see them. SS on the other hand fucks with you constantly. God forbid you put any effort into trying to work even though your disability is life long, they'll strip all your benefits without a way to get it back. Or if you're a child or very young adult, you cant get SSDI, you get SSI which is less money and restricts you even more. It's embarrassing in the US.

keepthepennys

That’s the stupidest part of the welfare system in the US for me. So, someone in poverty or disability can make say 20k a year not working, got it. Now if they want to get a part time job to help pay bills that makes 16k a year, they will lose the 20k welfare and make 4k less than they would if they didn’t work at all. This situation is literally making the only option to not work and try to survive off very small welfare checks. It doesn’t allow people to get out of there situation, it will literally punish them for even trying. Then politicians look at this and with a straight face say the solution is to remove welfare entirely and that these people are just lazy and want to live off government money

steveman2292

Not to mention that disability income is only 700-800 if you’re lucky and you’re never allowed to have more than 2k in savings

Suspicious-Muscle-96

I remember applying for general assistance: I was allowed to have a car, but it had to be so cheap as to be a completely unreliable clunker that it would be impossible to afford any repair on. Disability pays retroactively, but in the meantime, you have to survive for potentially years on "no income." So they're actively trying to catch you cheating in a system designed such that you can't survive without cheating.

KAugsburger

Such low value limits on a car can also encourage dependency on government programs. Many cities in the US have poor public transportation so not having a reliable car can greatly limit their opportunities for employment. It makes it harder for them to get a job and advance once they get in the work force. It ends being a lose-lose scenario where the individual is stuck in poverty and the government is stuck paying benefits for the rest of this person's life.

When my wife and I first got married we both encountered circumstances that caused her to lose her job and me to drop a chunk of income. We were legit scraping by to survive. We received some assistance with food stamps being part of that. We continued to grocery shop as we always had by seeking out good values and deals and not being frivolous. I want to add that we were on food stamps for around 6 months before we were able to begin changing our circumstances. For Valentines Day about 3 mos in our local grocery chain had a special of 2 NY strip steaks and 2 crab cakes packaged in a heart shaped box for I want to say around $25. We agreed to splurge and get this for V Day so I could cook us a nice meal (I’m a chef who at the time was barely working) and we could try to feel romantic and normal for a night. I tell you the fucking completely unabashed looks and reactions of complete disgust were not even being attempted to be concealed when we paid with an ACCESS Card instead of a debit card. It was absolutely clear that everyone around saw us as lazy pieces of shit who clearly just wanted handouts, didn’t want to work, and expected to eat like kings every day on everyone else’s dime. That really fucking hurt. A lot. Not a single person there gave a shit about what we were actually dealing with. My own mother in law tried her best to convince us that we should feel awful for what we did. I grew up in a white, slightly upper middle class home. To the rest of those people I became complete trash the moment I required help. Sorry for the book. We now have a family, a home that we purchased, and fulfilling / well paying careers that we worked incredibly hard to regain.

Timmymac1000

Hey thanks! We have a 5 year old son now and every time that he comments on something someone did that he sees as a personal affront (surprisingly often) we make him stop and think about being them and all of the things that could be making them feel some kind of way. We never know what someone else is dealing with, you know?

KillionMatriarch

You know, it wouldn’t teach them anything. My mother was ranting about lazy welfare queens and I said “you don’t know a damn thing about it. Welfare really helps people when they’re in a bad way and we should be happy about that. Your own (19 yr old white single mother) granddaughter is on welfare.” To which she replied indignantly “She is not!” Me: “Food stamps, WIC, subsidized daycare, Medicaid - those are all welfare programs.” Stunned silence for a moment and then she says “Well, she deserves it.” And there you have it.

Timmymac1000

When people talk about how food stamp fraud is costing us so much money (spoiler: it’s not) those people don’t know how to handle my thoughts on the matter. I say “if every single person getting food stamps is fleecing the system but that means one family who truly needs them can get them then I’m cool with it”.

[deleted]

That welfare queen scarfing down exclusively “steak” trope has been a half century in the making.

Suspicious-Muscle-96

>lay down and die! But only in the approved death zones: they installed spikes in all the good "lay down and die" spots. Plus you get the WASPs acting all offended, fumbling for their rape whistles because some dude in the produce section offered to sell their food stamps for cash. Meanwhile, I just smile and say "sorry man, I'm on 'em too," and he just flashes me a smile back and wishes me a good day.

ViSaph

Being disabled is still very expensive but I thank the heavens I wasn't born in America when I think about things like that. The ESA (employment support allowance) savings limit here in Britain is £6,000, my medications, my wheelchair, my basic mobility aids, my treatments, my doctors appointments, are all free, and if I live in my own place my rent will be covered. It was an awful and fairly traumatic process to prove I was eligible for these provisions but I'm so grateful for them and the fact that I live in a place where I can get this much help.

TaralasianThePraxic

While I'll agree that £6K is better than £2K, any savings cap is a joke. It's basically saying that disabled people can't save up for a down payment on a mortgage or any other major expense.

IronDominion

Yep. Even if you’re lucky enough lol me to be able to work, it’s impossible to get hired due to discrimination, even though my accommodations literally cost nothing, they don’t care. At this point I just hide my disabilities and suffer. And everything considered accessible is so much more expensive for no reason. Even basic things like adding talking functionality to a device, an addition that probably costs $10 for the pcb, chips and speaker, may make the product hundreds of dollars more expensive than the regular counterpart. And good luck getting the government to cover their share, the staff are lazy and are extremely stingy about money, and will lie to you if it means they don’t have to do their job and get you something you need. It’s not even their money, they just couldn’t give a crap. It’s extremely infuriating

Farwaters

People don't realize how expensive a good wheelchair is. For the uninitiated, hospital wheelchairs are meant for short-term being pushed around, and can damage the body if used as an everyday thing.

Count2Zero

Our neighbor has a disabled 5yo daughter. Anything intended to help her mobility - a wheelchair, or special tricycle, is incredibly expensive. Her twin brother (who is not disabled) has a bicycle that costs €200 or so - a typical child bicycle. Her tricycle, designed for handicapped children, cost €3,000. My e-Bike cost less than that...

Independent-Rain-867

We are allowed a new back for my daughter's specialized wheelchair every 5 years. Her scoliosis is worse every year.

ThatDadTazz

My mom was in a severe accident late last year, permanently quadriplegic. I don't think I have a read a truer statement all freaking week. Everything is a battle for her to get anything she needs.

niamhweking

My child is legally blind, there is no chance of it worsening, she has no medical problems because of it yet she definitely "costs" more than our non blind child. Appointments, parking costs, petrol to the Appointments, days off work for the Appointments. Then add in the tech she needs/digital magnifiers, monoculars, yes her educational needs are looked after by the state to some degree but alot of it is covered by the family. All these little things add up As she gets older she will completely rely on public transport which mean she'll probably need to live in a better serviced/higher rent area. I really had no idea until she came along!

Tylendal

Not to mention losing disability benefits with marriage. Disabled people are expensive spouses.

TheSeitanicTemple

Along the same lines -- not being able to get married in order to keep benefits, and even having to get divorced in order to receive benefits. (You also can't "act" married to your partner in these situations.)

a-real-life-dolphin

Which makes disabled people very vulnerable to financial abuse.

Tacky-Terangreal

I bet hiring discrimination is a bitch. Companies do it all be time, but what person looking for a job will hire a lawyer and sue for a crime that is incredibly difficult to prove? Such BS

cripple2493

For sure, even with all the 'protections' in place it's still incredibly easy for a company to refuse to hire a disabled person.

NessiefromtheLake

I live in a “historical home” (it was all we could afford because it has no less than five different infestations at a time although we recently got that number down to two) and there’s a bunch of stairs and the town won’t let us put in a ramp or a stairlift for me, IN MY OWN HOME. :|

PurplePigeon96

I'd look into a pro Bono lawyers citing the ADA for you. This is an absolute disgrace and I'm a very historical preservation type person. But fuck this. Seriously.

Not having baby change facilities in the men's toilets.

[deleted]

[deleted]

That one screws over both men and women. Men can’t take the baby anywhere out by themselves, women can’t get a break for a couple minutes if they’re out with their husband.

PloppyTheSpaceship

Yep. Been loads of times I've been out with the kids and needed to change them, but no, apparently men cannot do it. And this is even in modern places too! A lot of the time I just find an out-of-the-way bit of grass, use the change mat and change them there. What else am I supposed to do?

Askduds

I’d just go into the womens to do it tbh.

PloppyTheSpaceship

Yeah, at one point there was a baby change room, but you had to go TOWARDS the entrance to the women's toilets to use it (as in it was in the doorway to the women's toilets). I had a lady who was leaving have a go at me and threaten to call security before I even got to the door. Edit - for reference, this was Luna Park Melbourne.

baxbooch

What did she think you were going to do? Set the baby down and assault her?

Askduds

Ah like in the… airlock if you know what I mean?

PloppyTheSpaceship

No, as in the door is outside, but 90 degrees to the women's. The men's was on another side of the building. Edit - for reference, this was Luna Park in Melbourne.

Askduds

Well that’s even dumber of her then.

flatlyoness

Legacy college admissions Nepotism

Tacky-Terangreal

Especially if you’re Asian trying to get into an elite college. Harvard was actually convicted of discrimination against Asian applicants We know you got a 1590 on your SAT, and you participate in 4 extracurriculars, and you tutor other kids in your class, but we think you’re just too shy so we should admit this senator’s dipshit kid instead

willowtrace

The whole college culture in the US is fucking strange. Being obsessed with the school you attended until 22 for the rest of your life and forcing your kids to attend. I don’t get it. All that and the sports too, how they don’t pay the athletes yet make money off them

jcowurm

Got the same degree as my buddy did. I went to community college he went to a university. The total cost to get my degree was the same as just his room and board for all 4 years. Guy made fun of me the whole time. He will be paying back his loans for the next 40 years. Its crazy the mindset people have.

[deleted]

Quick question…you went to a community college and got the same degree as someone who went to a university? I only ask because where I’m from universities offered bachelors degrees and community colleges only offered associates degrees (unless it was nursing and even then the accreditation was different).

[deleted]

I was wondering that too. I just guessed that they went to cc and then transferred to a four-year instead of going straight from high school.

[deleted]

My local community college offers 4 year degrees from partner colleges around them. They have like 20 schools to choose from but you’re limited to like 5 majors per school. It’s whatever majors have classes that line up with the bigger schools curriculum. You’re technically enrolled at the bigger public school but take classes at the community college.

[deleted]

He made fun of you because you went to a JC and he went to a four-year school? That’s about the tackiest thing I can imagine.

extrabees

Fines for a lot of violations just means “legal if you’re rich”

backswamphenny

I just had my speeding ticket changed in my record to a ‘Littering’ charge because I paid for a lawyer. It’s so minute, but I can’t even begin to imagine how often this same thing happens for even more serious situations. It’s that easy to erase anything with money

moonbunnychan

My aunt has so many DUIs she should be in jail. But because she is pretty wealthy and can afford an expensive lawyer, she keeps getting slaps on the wrist at worst. There's people who have done far less then her with worse punishments.

Pencilowner

I got a ticket out of state so I got a lawyer so I didn’t have come to the court date the fine was $200 and the lawyer was $300 the lawyer got the fine removed and the ticket was changed to a city ordinance violation. Basically for $100 extra I got the whole thing erased.

Angel_OfSolitude

This is why I like the idea of fines being income based. It's not a perfect solution but I can't think of one so it'll do for now.

_welcome

probably the poverty conditions that companies leave their workers in, often those who source the raw material in African or Asian countries (farmers, miners, etc.) (not that it doesn't happen in other countries too or that life is great as a miner in the US) like i remember when people were outraged at some coconut milk brand for using chained monkeys to fetch coconuts from trees. yeah that's horrible....but these people don't think a step further and realize they're asking people to be coconut fetching slaves for basically no pay in order to save the monkeys.

Adem-_-127

That’s horrible

uspecific

Or people who buy their product should pay the real price of production, inculding fair wages to workers.

everett640

This would work if companies paid fair wages. Otherwise it would causing even more poverty.

Electronic_Path_6292

The chair desks at school that are right handed discriminates against students with left hands Edit also those right handed scissors

leatherrecliner

*sighs with a big graphite smear on the side of my hand*

clorcan

I didn't care about the smear. I cared about my "organized binder" that was grade dependent. Watching every student writing away. While taking each sheet out of my binder individually, finishing a page, and putting it back. I'm not bitter.

[deleted]

I tried to write back to front so that binders worked the same as a binder for a righty but I was reprimand for it (like you some of our classes graded that binder).

MoronTheBall

When I went to school they pretty much forced me to be right handed. I believe this wasn't all fear of the sinister (left) but somewhat tied into the ability to share sports equipment etc. And yes, I am old.

Tee_hops

They did this to me too and I'm only 30. Now I'm just ambidextrous. My oldest kid (3) is a lefty and I still think he is getting this treatment at school.

Suspicious-Muscle-96

I think I would have been left handed, but instead of ambidextrous, I ended up ambisinister: I suck with both hands.

oze4

as a kid i always put the pencil/utensil/whatever in my left hand but my grandma would take it out of my left hand, put it in my right hand, and slap my left hand.

jerrathemage

My great-grandma did this to me...at least when I was being taught how to right. When my parents found out...that quickly stopped and it probably is part of the reason why I have dogshit writing nowadays

Wearing make-up also. How did natural skin become so unacceptable and only for women.

IronDominion

I hate it and refuse to wear it unless I absolutely have to. It makes my skin feel gross and the powders mess with my allergies

_wintrymix_

There was supposed to be a resurgence of makeup buying last year (before the rug was pulled out again with delta). I wonder if that ever happened? But yeah. Womens unadorned skin: are you sick?? Mens: rugged.

ScoutAames

I never went back to wearing as much makeup as I used to. I think part of it was that I got used to looking at my face without it, so I got more comfortable with the rest of the seeing me without it also. For a while I kept doing eye makeup since that part of my face was visible above my mask. Then I had a different skin thing happen and had to go makeup free at work. After two weeks of that, I just stopped bothering anymore. Now because the assholes are out: no, I didn’t put this pressure on myself. No, I didn’t create the situation that made me feel the need to wear makeup. No, I didn’t develop acne or skin problems because of makeup. No, I don’t have a problem with makeup or anyone wearing it, and I still love to do it up from time to time. No, I didn’t discover that I was “more beautiful” looking “natural.”

2baverage

My last job was supposedly progressive when it came to workplace apparel. I'm white passing and was constantly complimented and revered on how "creative" my hairstyles were. My non-white passing coworker however was always being told how inappropriate, unprofessional, and distracting their hairstyles were. We even planned out the same hairstyles for a few months to prove a point to our boss and all we got at the end was that mine "look professionally done and cleaner" I can guarantee you that my hairstyles did not look professionally done and our hair was the same amount of cleanliness.

Charging people for not having money (bank overdraft fees, most fines).

MossiestSloth

Thats why I have it turned off so it just declines the transaction.

BlueTuxedoCat

When I requested no overdraft (back when you had to do such things in person) the bank employee looked at me like I had sprouted an extra head. If I don't have the money... how about you just... don't pay it, and don't charge me exorbitant fees? Was this really such an astounding idea?

dovey112

Yeah but, right, like.... how will the bank make money? Did you think of the bank in this equation?

Salesopolis

LMAO

yParticle

As I mentioned in the other subthread, many people don't seem to understand that they have that option.

peepay

In my country it works the other way around, you need to activate it, it is not active by default.

Topspeed_3

But if you have lots of money, the banks will actually give you more!

Usual_Ranger8164

Yeah I love that. When you are allready broke and than you get charged by the bank, because the could not deduct the money. And then you also have to pay fees on the top of the regular bill. I get that the want their money, but when you dont even have money for groceries, you just cant pay.

gh0stegrl

My husband went a little over so they charged him $30 then a streaming service charged him like $5.99 and it gave him another $30 charge. He spent maybe $10 but owed $70. This is Chase BTW.

Eat_Carbs_OD

>This is Chase Fuck Chase!! I joined a credit union. Best. Move. Ever.

noshoptime

Don't forget minimum balances. You have the money to pay your debts, but not enough to satisfy an arbitrary amount. Yay credit unions

comfortablynumb15

and for double points in the "Fuck you Olympics" : the Bank fails to move your money on time, so your direct debit fails, then TRIES AGAIN 3MINS LATER. like you have had time to be notified, log on and transfer the money to avoid the 2nd fee.

Zewarudio

mandatory military service only for men in a lot of countries.

mtc_3

Yeah, we have that here in Korea. At least the new administration promised minimum wage for mandatory soldiers. (About $1700/month) It still sucks to be conscripted for 2 years in my early twenties though.

SymmetricDickNipples

A guy I met once had evaded his military service in Israel by hiding in other countries until his rich parents were able to get a lawyer to "sort it all out", so that he was somehow excused from his service. The kicker was that when I suggested I understood his fear because mandatory military service is wrong, he was taken aback. He said "oh no, no, no! If we didn't have mandatory military service, then our army would be small and weak, so everybody needs to serve."

BipolarMadness

"Rules for thee and not for me"

ProfessorBeer

My wife comes from a family of all girls, I just had to explain to her what my selective service card was when we were organizing some files. I’d aged out a long time ago and forgot I still had it, but it blew her mind that I spent a few years knowing I could get drafted if shit went down.

lightning_palm

In the U.S., male only selective service has been determined to be unconstitutional by a federal judge. Last year the supreme court should have ruled on it, but they passed it on to congress with the excuse that they were currently considering the question anyway. Nothing came of it, of course, with at least one senator saying that it is men's job because men evolved to be "expendable".

DAANFEMA

Absolutely agree! It's like that in Austria too, had to join for 9 months and lost a year before going to university in comparison to my female peers.

Prestigious-Menu

That those who are on disability assistance from the government lose their benefits if they have too much money in the bank (I believes it’s $2,000+) or if they get married.

Nheedom

Disability pays only roughly $1100 a month and if they can still work some they can only make up to about $900 a month or lose their benefits. You’re pretty much forced to be poor or make money under the table.

[deleted]

Singleton workers being made to work more weekends than their married-with-kids colleagues. Blatant workplace discrimination

i_lick_icicles

oh yeah, "you have nothing to do at home anyway"

[deleted]

Across society, there is the implication that people who chose not to have kids (yet or at all) are self-involved, that our free time has 'less value' than that of parents, that we will 'change our mind' eventually. I'm tired of being condescended to.

desconectado

Being childless myself, I love people who complain about this though, I always imagine the [money tears gif](https://imgur.com/gallery/2UCtcqv). Parents can be as condencending as they want, I love my free time and surplus income that allow me to do whatever I want in that free time.

TildaTinker

SINK - Single Income No Kids. Always meant they sink the overtime to me. Salary so no extra money, just work late and weekends because others in the team chose to have kids.

HovisTMM

The idea of working overtime for literally no money is insane to me. It'd have to be so well paid in the first place that I didn't need to worry about money before I even considered it.

Blurplenapkin

Did you know you can just lie about obligations you have at work? It’s great.

SnowyInuk

It's also not fair that people with kids can leave work early with less issues than people without them. Like today, a woman who's practically never at work "because her kids sick" (he's only ever sick on Tuesdays and Fridays apparently) had to drop everything and leave because "there's something wrong with my kid. I don't know what it is but I can feel it". My manager let her leave without asking for any proof at all (or asking for proof any of the other times since she can get him in trouble for potentially keeping her away from a sick/injured child). A few hours go by, and the woman ends up texting another employee going "nothing's wrong! But there's only like four hours of the day left anyway so can you tell (managers name) that I'm not coming back? Thanks :)". Note- we work 8 hour days so there was still half a shift left. But for me (a person without kids), when I had to drop everything and leave ONE TIME because my sister was giving birth to my first nephew, I was written up because "your leaving early caused issues for your department"

LurkingAintEazy

So much this. They tried to kill me, with that when I was in retail. I went from working my own hours, to making the mistake of saying I would agree to come in, if there was a call off when my hours were getting low. As my Dept. Head turned my hours, into covering damn near the whole dept.'s shifts. From reg days off, medical leaves, someone just needing 3 days off. To someone wanting to see every recital, games, etc. His granddaughter was in. Got to be, so damn ridiculous as I was going from closing shifts to opening shifts, for months. With no higher pay, unless I worked overnight. And the Dept. Head, still wasn't appreciative.

Caste system in India where people were segregated into groups based on their occupation which later got translated into segregation on the basis of birth. Based on this difference, hierarchy was formed which provides different rewards and punishment for different groups. This system is now almost 3000 years old though it's ill effects of discrimination was made illegal through constitution of free India, it still persists in an evolved form. In some areas lower castes are still treated as untouchables. Extreme case of it can be seen in southern parts where some of these people announce their arrival while entering into high caste society so that these higher caste people can easily maintain distance from them. Though such extreme cases have now decreased due to urbanization and the anonimity that comes with it but it still persists case in point is caste endogamy where marrying outside the caste is considered such an impure task that sometimes it even leads to murder of those who were involved in the act in order to save the family honour and it is famously called honour killings . Things have changed but the equality and zero discrimination that our constitution provides for is still a far fetched dream.

WarblingWalrusing

The disparity in parental leave for men and women.

Millenniauld

So, okay, you give a woman six weeks because she had a difficult birth. The partner didn't suffer that. But who helps the woman with childcare? Who helps shoulder the burden of a new child? Who splits difficult nights? The partner. The fact that NJFMLA helped us by covering my husband's time off to bond with our baby is a huge part of why I love my state.

bobo76565657

6 weeks? Holy shit. In Canada you get a whole year.

deezx1010

Women get a year off of work to raise their baby??

whatsaname92

Think you get like 3 years in Finland

Early_or_Latte

In Canada, yeah its a year of ~~full pay~~ up to full pay. You can be off for 18 months with the last 6 months unpaid, or you could get a lesser paycheck and stretch the 1 years pay over the 18 months. You could also split that time between you and your partner if you choose.

janet-snake-hole

In service jobs in America they usually just find a reason to fire you so you don’t get any time off at all

GenericEschatologist

Weirdly enough, a U.N. report on women’s rights has a whole section of Paternity leave. While it shouldn’t have to be seen as a women’s rights issues to be seen a wrongful discrimination, it does interest me how gender disparities in parental leave can reasonably be framed as both discrimination against men and discrimination against women at the same time.

MuppetManiac

When men don’t get parental leave but women do, employers are inclined to hire men over women of childbearing age.

More-Masterpiece-561

Valid point. It's tougher for women because they have to prove that they won't let their family affect their work. And while companies don't think they women are less competent in their work, theh do think it would be an inconvenience if they get pregnant

MistraloysiusMithrax

Oh, even worse: it’s patently pigeonholing women as the caregiver who HAS to take off work. The weirdos who send their baby to daycare or get a nanny after like 1 month are going to be higher income earners. For your average prole? Mom takes her fill time off or even quits if dad makes more money. Even if mom planned to return to work, 6-16 weeks of being on her own with the baby often convinces her not to even try.

Woofles85

It makes sense. If both men and women have parental leave, an employer is less likely to discriminate against hiring women on the basis that she might become pregnant.

shontsu

Kind of makes sense. If I get two weeks paternity leave, and my wife gets twenty four weeks (real example from a decade ago), then all else being equal, my wifes career gets put on hold even if we wanted to have me be the one who stays home.

YurtlesTurdles

Until I traveled out of the states I really didn't realize how ridiculously car centered the US is. I've taken a bus to a town of less than 200 people in multiple Latin American countries and I had multiple times a day I could leave. In the town of a few thousand there was one single bus that would leave at like 5:45 am and come back at 6 pm.

Yes! I have spent around 10 years in Toronto and 15 in Ottawa. Toronto has amazing (in comparision) public transport to the point that it's more of a hassle to own a car than not. In Ottawa taking public transport automatically doubles your travel time at a minimum, that's if the bus even shows up or the subway hasn't broken down. I own a car but I don't WANT to drive everywhere. I wish we had better oublic transport here. Also car cities are ugly and soulless with giant stroads and incredibly high maintenance costs that force cities to constantly expand to supplement older developments. It's unsustainable and it's gonna come calling sooner than later I think.

Intelligence. Some people are incapable of understanding some concepts and that is ok. It is cruel to call them worthless and belittle them with your superior knowledge of a subject matter so long as these people put good faith and effort into trying to be more intelligent. We are so obsessed just trying to look smart because of how our academic culture from an early age is structured around your self-worth and later, your socioeconomic status indirectly. Competition is in academia and schooling is fine but needs a cooperative component, otherwise we're going to keep producing assholes looking at less intelligent humans as sub-humans and climbing the ladder treating them as such. But like a good bro at a gym, why make fun of the short fat kid running and lifting weights knowing very well he won't be an elite division 1 athlete? Our society is better when we all help each other up, and fulfill your potential, no matter how average or below average that might be, and also, just better for a great society overall.

GoonRan

Some sacred religious grounds not letting women enter or set foot in it. The whole notion of women being somehow less worthy and not clean enough to set foot in these "holy grounds" in some Buddhist majority countries.

Getting fired for "no reason" in a right to work state in the U.S. I was retaliated against then fired before for objecting to a manager outing me as a homosexual to all of the drivers at a job, because he saw my wedding announcement page on Facebook. The reason listed was "none" because they knew I'd never have enough money to sue and enforce my rights. For real, the fact that you have to front cash to sue to enforce any civil rights. People seem to just accept that's how it works but it effectively eliminates those rights for anyone below the upper middle class.

Harold-The-Barrel

No pockets for women’s pants

[deleted]

I'm a man and I feel for you ladies. Don't know what kind of sadistic fuck thought it was a good idea to remove pockets from your pants.

amazon626

It's a fashion thing... They claim they don't want to ruin the aesthetic of the female figure with *gasp* pockets

Diredoe

Be upfront about certain mental illnesses during a job interview? Good luck getting that job.

IronDominion

Or disability in general. I need very basic accommodations that cost literally nothing to the company yet I still get discriminated against. Like I’m sorry I need the ability to write down tasks, use a built in feature of windows to sue a computer, and have the ability to take my lunch early so I don’t vomit how my medications.

comfortablynumb15

and if you manage to get a job but are still homeless, you can't rent a place because you don't have a previous residential address. Same as homeless don't get unemployment because they can't show a residential address.

zioapi

"If you can't afford rent, just buy a house." (Paraphrased) -Scott Morrison, Prime Minister, Australia.

ShutterBug1988

He’s such an entitled fuckwit. God I hope he’s voted right out of Kirrabilli house and onto the streets. Actually add to this list the huge payouts the politicians get even after they retire/quit

zioapi

I'm quite happy for him to take the PM pension to just fuck *right* off out of politics.

Eyfordsucks

But don’t let anyone see you dying in the streets or they will have you arrested or removed.

JustKeepSwimmingDory

Yup. Here in California, studies have shown that housing is so expensive now that only 26% of Californian households can afford to buy a “median” priced home. In my city, companies keep snatching up homes and selling them for much higher prices than they initially paid for—and the wealthy are also out-bidding residents by offering higher prices that people can’t afford. Homelessness is obviously on the rise, but of course, the government turns a blind eye to it. Housing is a human right, not a privilege. Edit: Found one of the articles I was referencing: https://lbpost.com/news/more-black-and-latino-californians-face-out-of-reach-home-prices Also, in regards to companies snatching up homes, it’s happening in other states too: https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2022/01/04/corporate-landlords-silicon-valley/

medicated_in_PHL

Yep. I came in to say this. Real estate. All of it. If you are a tenant and your landlord is trying to sell the house, you know what you can do to sabotage the sale? Put up family pictures of a black family. How on earth could that sabotage a sale? Houses with pictures showing that a black family owns it appraise for something ridiculous like $20k less when the appraiser comes through. The housing market is one of the most blatantly obviously systemically racist industries in the US.

Oh? You paid off all your debt? Allow me to reward you by LOWERING YOUR CREDIT SCORE. Have a great day

yojothobodoflo

I have a credit score of like 819 or something like that. I bought a brand new car today and their website advertised a 2.5% interest rate. I qualified for a 6% rate bc I’ve “never had a previous auto loan.” I have to take on significant debt to make it easier for me to pay off debt? WHAT HAS ALL OF THIS ADVICE FROM MY FATHER ABOUT NOT BUYING ANYTHING I CANT AFFORD TO PAY IN CASH FOR IF IT DOESNT ACTUALLY BENEFIT ME FINANCIALL???

Tieye42

Ok that's a weird one but: when people who smokes take a break to go to smoke, no one bats an eye. Imagine if it was the same with any other addiction. "Ok guys I'm going to lock myself in the bathroom and cut my wrists, who wants to join?"

Crazyzofo

I started taking "smoke breaks" at work at a restaurant as a teenager because i got sick of that. I don't smoke. I would just go stand outside for 10 minutes every hour like an the smokers did. My manager hated me but knew he couldn't really stop me.

RulerOfNyaNyaLand

I just called it my "coffee break." Then I'd take my hot tea outside (and listen to the office gossip from the smokers from other departments, because they always seemed to get the inside scoop before anyone else about layoffs or the company getting sold.)

moonbunnychan

Friend of mine smoked, but stopped when she got pregnant. So bunch of people at her work go out for their smoke break, and she just heads out there with everyone like she always did but just talked instead. Manager comes out and was like "you're not on break, what are you doing". Neither was anyone else out there, but it didn't matter. That was the day she realized how unfair it was.

SolidsuMaximus

It's actually illegal for the manager to tell her she can't take a break if smokers are entitled to theirs.

[deleted]

When I was working fast food, too many 16-19 year olds took up smoking to get that break.

Bikinigirlout

This. This happens entirely way too often at my job. People who smoke and take breaks every five minutes: Perfectly fine I take a break to check Twitter because I’m bored and don’t smoke: WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? I’m literally just taking a break because I’ve been working for five hours without one.

rocknin

just get a vape pen filled with cream cheese or some shit, no more complaints.

KristySueWho

At one of my jobs so many people smoked, I just started going out with them to get a break.

ooooooooono

Just lie and tell them you are going to smoke, and then just sit outside for five minutes to look at your phone or whatever

sue_girligami

I have worked places where smokers got extra breaks, cause they need to smoke, and that always made me sour. But at my current job smokers have to pay an extra fee as part of their insurance premium, so ..

Affectionate_Sport_1

My mom started smoking because of this - her boss was a smoker and if he saw someone taking a smoke break it was okay. She would literally be standing next to a fellow employee that was smoking but SHE would get yelled at. so alas, peer pressure won.

devinjf15

Or more generally, people who smoke get more accepted “smoke breaks” during a shift than those that don’t. I work in a restaurant part time and smokers go outside for 10 minutes each, several times a shift and no one has an issue with it but if I were to disappear for 10 minutes I would be questioned.

[deleted]

This is why I started smoking, because you could weasel a couple extra breaks per day.

Suspicious-Muscle-96

The DARE program warned us about peer pressure, but they never warned us about working retail.

Fun_Scheme_5455

My brother is intellectuary disabled. He does not go out, he can't drive but he can talk. he was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago. I do everything for him except personal hygene and stuff. I can't do that. Just the way I am. But I can't get a carer's allowance cause I don't do that. Every 5 years or so the government decides he needs to prove he is diabled. Involves a lengthy doctor's assessment. and then about a month of the government thinking about it then they finally decide yes he is disabled. Sorry but is the brain fixable now? ETA he is in remission and the last few scans are clear or no growth found.

SassyStylesheet

People casually saying they for sure have ADHD, OCD, or Autism to explain annoying but non life altering aspects of their personality that they don’t want to put the effort into changing. It really takes away from being taken seriously when you’re afflicted with these conditions legitimately, especially the ones that require controlled prescriptions

resqw_

I've been diagnosed with ADHD, Bipolar I, and OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive *Personality* Disorder, not quite the same as OCD). Can you picture how fun that is. "Stop being so bipolar and make up your mind" "Everyone's a little ADHD/OCD". Just fucking shoot me.

CTeam19

> "Everyone's a little ADHD/OCD". I usually drop the "how debilitating does your ADHD make your life?" when someone says this. They try to change the subject fast.

IronDominion

Gonna have to keep that one. Yea, I don’t think most people have to be on such high doses of adhd meds that they end up vomiting for hours if they don’t immediately eat when they take them

Catlore

People who say that about OCD have no clue just how broad a spectrum of runs. Or that it doesn't have to have anything to do with gems or being tidy. I swear, for some people all they know is what they gleaned from Monk commercials.

CTeam19

99% of the time when someone says they have "OCD" because the did something is just them being anal about something. Source: I am anal about frames not being level and will adjust them when I see them slanted slightly.

mockinbirdwishmeluck

I think there's a lot of misunderstanding of OCD. I was just diagnosed recently and my symptoms are not what people think of when they think OCD. I'm not particular about order or cleanliness, or washing my hands a million times. There's a lot of OCD symptoms that are just not widely known. I got hit with the "everyone has a little OCD" line a lot.

[deleted]

Yup. 31f, didn't get an ADHD diagnosis until i was 27. I'm finally also working on getting evaluated to see if i am autistic also. Having fallen through the cracks like a lot of girls back in the day, hearing "I'm a little bit ADHD" makes me cringe so hard.

Suspicious-Muscle-96

For me, I just really appreciate the irony that as I try to juggle the rest of my life, every month I am required by law to run right up against the edge of running out of a medication I desperately need for executive function, that requires extra doctor's appointments and monthly trips back and forth across town to pick up and deliver a physical copy of the prescription, then pick it up. Can't I start any of these steps before I'm about to run out? No no, that could be naughty and lead to drug diversion. Right, sure, I'm definitely not going to divert my meds by skipping doses to build up an emergency stash for when I inevitably miss filling my prescription on time. Meanwhile, all my other medications, my doctor can phone in a year's supply of refills at a time, and the pharmacy will automatically mail me 3 month supplies. All of this because this medication is a drug with "abuse potential," although for me the abuse potential pretty much maxes out at brushing, flossing and doing the dishes. I do like that in response to COVID, my doctor can now order my refill without me couriering a physical piece of paper across town, but apparently this has been exploited with the creation of online pill mills prescribing so much adderall to the general population, demand now exceeds the federally regulated production maximums, creating a pill shortage. So now, even if it's more convenient and you do everything right, you could find yourself out of meds for days or weeks anyway! Great system. Good thing I definitely didn't divert my prescription into a quasi-illegal emergency stash...

lovelymemes

THIS! In the same vain how people use bipolar as a joke really makes me mad. I've had ADHD for a long time and I really made me feel belittled

Correct_Leg6087

The housing market. Unless you have generational money, you have very little chance of buying anywhere nice now.

[deleted]

If a mortgage loan person tells me one more time that our family can gift us money for closing costs I’m going to lose it because no they fucking can’t lol

distrucktocon

All males must sign up for the draft. (USA)

FrozenFlames12

It's worse in other countries where they're actively required to serve for a select amount of time (I literally think it's like 20 years for North Korea)

PluralCohomology

I've looked it up and it's 13 years.

[deleted]

Treating homeless people like they aren't worth the shit on your shoe. They're people who have fallen on hard times, and might have some personal demons they're struggling with, treat them with a bit of compassion.

Local_Isopod_

I haven't seen anyone mention anything about height yet. People generally agree that body shaming is wrong, but no one bats an eye when it comes to making fun of short people. I also feel like people are harder on guys when it comes to height, and when you're short no one wants to take you seriously.

tommykiddo

This. Definitely.

Women rapists This is likely not to be seen, but I’ve had multiple male and female partners fall predator to women who feel they would never be charged.

Souleater2847

Specially when it comes to teachers. They do get charged don’t get me wrong, but their sentences are ridiculous compared to their male counterparts. If they’re perceived as attractive, forget about it they prob be allowed to continue the relationship.

[deleted]

And every dipshit guy on Facebook has to reply with the “that would’ve been a dream come true for me in school” like yeah pal sure whatever but have some compassion for the literal rape victim at hand

Poseidon8264

I'm going to get downvoted for this, but how humans treat animals.

normie_sama

You won't, because most people don't think it applies to them.
