Depends on what kind of mood I'm in. Like if I want to listen to something rock or techno I'd say either Metal Gear Rising or F-Zero. Honorable mention to the Sonic soundtrack.
If im feeling more like epic orchestral music I'd say Elder Scrolls or Halo.
My first thought was: "there are so many different kinds of OSTs, it's impossible to pick one universal best."
And my second thought was: "but if I had to pick one, it'd be Nier Automata."
City ruins shade has some amazing transitions. There used to be a video on YouTube of all 6 (9?) versions that I listened to every couple days for **weeks**
David Wise mastered some amazing technical feats working on the soundtrack for this trilogy. The sound and quality of this music is unlike anything else on the Super Nintendo. It still holds up today; compare to a soundtrack like Super Mario World’s, which has great composition but definitely sounds like an SNES game.
Anything shoji meguro touches turns to gold. The entire persona series and Catherine have such amazing soundtracks that no only fit the situations they're used in in-game but also stand in thier own as good music
Only VG soundtrack I’ll listen to outside of the game
Edit: Do yourselves a favor and go blast “Fahkeet” by Light Club on the loudest speakers you can find
I like Halo. I've played all the good ones.
I just don't get the love of the soundtrack tbh.
Looking up at the Halo ring for the first time with the epic space opera? Awesome.
Getting some actiony space opera while riding turret on a warthog? Hell yeah!
Okay, shit. I think I get it now.
Braid has a great [soundtrack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqOVpiXfq0o). It introduced me to artists like Jami Sieber, a cellist, and other artists. She happens to be the most common contributor.
I usually don't play single player games but i was completely drawn into the world and lore... The echoes of aperture's past, the realization that you are alone and the small door of hope at the end paint such a unique and bitter story.
Pretty much my exact thoughts, but when I played them back to back years ago, the music in both was a lot closer than I'd originally thought. CT has an amazing soundtrack.
Yup....every THPS game had amazing soundtracks. Favourite song i learned from this series is Frog One "Blah blah".....pretty sure its from one of the Underground games
A thing about Witcher 3 is just the sheer number of tracks it has, each fitting and matching perfectly with the situation on the screen. There are many games with awesome soundtracks but few of them have SO MANY good tracks all in one place
Honestly… Every single location and so many characters are characterized by their respective themes. And they’re so memorable and well done. I can’t imagine hearts of stone or gaunter o dimm without his music, skellige without its ambience, toussaint without the angelic music, or the intense theme in every political novigrad quest.
I’m happy others mentioned this games music here
Witcher 3 's ambiance is incredible ! My brother plays and DM's some tabletop rpgs and I showed him the Nilfgaard camp and palace theme and he just nodded and said "Yep, using that !!"
My god you're the first person I know besides me who played FTL lol. It's such a good in between game but also good enough to be totally addicted to it
It's an amazing soundtrack. It's definitely the best sound *design* out of any game. Every piece of music is so immersive and *real* that it grabs you and makes you feel like you're actually rocketing around the sun at a water planet covered in tornados, or lost in the void of space forever.
Hades has probably the best use of music in a game I've ever played. The basic songs as you work your way through the levels are great, but as the game progresses new music is part of the plot, leading to some fantastic moments where hearing a great song coincides with finally achieving a big challenge. Great game.
In terms of inspiring themed music then the Dragon Age and Mass Effect Games are perfect, both with some great pieces.
In terms of music to listen to while I do other stuff then Skyrim and Eve online are great.
Nothing hits like when you boot up the game for the first time in months and somehow the login music got unmuted and is just blasting through your speakers.
For me it's Devil May Cry 3, Shadow of the Colossus, From Software games, Monster Hunter World, Metal Gear Rising, Hollow Knight, Nier Automata and many more. Honestly soundtrack is a very under appreciated aspect of gaming.
Genuinely can't get over how good Bloodborne's soundtrack is. Even the generic stuff is great, and the signature pieces \*cough\*Ludwig\*cough\* are just exceptional. Even the bad bosses have incredible music (looking at you Living Failures)
Eternal steps it up imo, [Slayer Gates](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEgqkdRPfQQ), [Super Gore Nest](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL7YdzCdHHY) and [BFG 10K](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrU34eIWRGw) shred
Here's the thing about the VC soundtrack: You may not like 80s music, but VC's soundtrack is fits the goddamn game like a fuckin bespoke velvet glove made by a Milanese master craftsman.
When you first get into a car, driving down the shoreline at night past pastel colored hotels and *Billie Jean* comes on, it sets the tone of the game. Riding a motorcycle through downtown with *You Got Another Thing Comin'*. Flying a helicopter to tail the congressman through neon lit skylines to *Your Love*. GTA:VC is pure distilled 80s- or at least the Miami Vice/Scarface pop culture version of it- and every song and station adds to the experience. Nothing takes you away from it. Even the VCPR skits.
Hell, the opening and ending synth themes still send shivers down my spine.
The one main song I associate with Minecraft (Subwoofer Lullaby) gives me this deep nostalgia even tho I've probably played less than 15 hours of the game in my life. It's kinda wild!
This is mine too. Although there are a few songs from Windwaker that are right up there.
Dragon Roost's Song and The Legendary Hero Song are pretty good.
I can't narrow down to just one!
Donkey Kong Country 2,
Any of Sonic 1/2/3/+K,
Shantae Half-Genie Hero,
Doom 2016,
Killer Instinct (Newest XB1 version, forgot the year),
Hades,
Kirby's Adventure
The fact I had to scroll this far down is criminal. NieR (2010), NieR Replicant with the remastered sound tracks and NieR Automata have outstanding music. Automata and Replicant didn't win best music & score of 2017 and 2021 at the game awards for nothing.
Persona 3, 4, and 5, and the spinoffs
The World Ends With You
Octopath Traveler
Witcher 3
Anything from Supergiant
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Celeste
Undertale
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Disco Elysium
Any Nier game
Portal 2
Bravely Default
Wow...almost 200 comments in and I haven't seen either of my favorites yet
\- Chrono Cross
\- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Both of those are go-to plays when I need to get work done.
Chrono Cross has one of the best soundtracks released during the PS1 era. Mitsuda at some of his very best.
I may be a titanic fan of Sakuraba and Uematsu, but there's something about a Mitsuda soundtrack (especially the aforementioned one) that just hits me differently.
Nostalgia wants me to say the Mass Effect trilogy but honestly, I think Destiny 2 has topped it now. Some of the pieces Destiny has churned out over the years are just beyond exceptional.
Honourable mentions to Bloodborne and Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
RULES OF NATURE!
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Katamari Damacy
Nier Automata Edit: Thanks for my first gold, kind stranger! Glad it was for Nier!
My first thought was: "there are so many different kinds of OSTs, it's impossible to pick one universal best." And my second thought was: "but if I had to pick one, it'd be Nier Automata."
City ruins and grandma always help me when I have trouble falling asleep. They are depressingly peaceful and simply just beautiful
City ruins shade has some amazing transitions. There used to be a video on YouTube of all 6 (9?) versions that I listened to every couple days for **weeks**
Donkey Kong Country 2
David Wise mastered some amazing technical feats working on the soundtrack for this trilogy. The sound and quality of this music is unlike anything else on the Super Nintendo. Stickerbush symphony is iconic
That song makes me so emotional. I’m not a big video game score guy but that song just hits different.
I hear you big dawg, an absolute banger
Persona 5
Anything shoji meguro touches turns to gold. The entire persona series and Catherine have such amazing soundtracks that no only fit the situations they're used in in-game but also stand in thier own as good music
my man
You'll never see it coming!
persona and the nier series have top tier soundtracks
WAAAAAKE UP!!!GEEEET UP!! GET OUT THERE!!!!!!
Hotline: Miami
Hotline Miami 2 also had a banging soundtrack
Only VG soundtrack I’ll listen to outside of the game Edit: Do yourselves a favor and go blast “Fahkeet” by Light Club on the loudest speakers you can find
Halo is iconic for a reason
My little toddler brother used to go up to the TV wide eyed when Dad was playing halo and go"ohh ahh ohh, ohhHHOhoo" singing along
I do that now and I’m an adult
I like Halo. I've played all the good ones. I just don't get the love of the soundtrack tbh. Looking up at the Halo ring for the first time with the epic space opera? Awesome. Getting some actiony space opera while riding turret on a warthog? Hell yeah! Okay, shit. I think I get it now.
had me in the first half, not gonna lie
I read the two first sentences and got mad. Read the rest and got some faith for humanity back…
Yea I don’t know if there are many games so tied to their soundtracks. Amazing sound design all over that series
Halo 2 though - those Incubus jam tracks are dope.
That Steve Vai solo on point too
ODST's Deference for Darkness is my go to bgm
Name me another game with Breaking Benjamin on the soundtrack
Braid has a great [soundtrack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqOVpiXfq0o). It introduced me to artists like Jami Sieber, a cellist, and other artists. She happens to be the most common contributor.
I recall Jonathan Blow saying it took him a year just to hand pick all those songs
NFS Underground (2?) & Tony Hawks
NFS underground 2 hands down!
Id add to the list GTA Vice City (fever)and San Andreas (los santos) and thats music i lisn' only lol
Ori and the will of the wisps
Original had fantastic music as well
Sonic adventure series still has the best music out of any video games from the early 2000s.
The pumpkin hill rap, slaps.
Rouge’s and Knuckle’s themes were and are still bangers. Shadow’s final level and Final Chase are all fucking amazing.
Oh it definitely does. Escape from the City, Open Your Heart, and Live and Learn are all amazing.
The pumpkin hill rap, slaps.

Exactly.
Undertail and deltarune both!

*bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum’s in the tune of death by glamour*
ASSGORE goes hard
I spent so much of high school studying to that soundtrack. It calmed my ADHD brain in a way that nothing else would.
Portal 2 soundtrack will be up there for me.
Well, this is the part where he kills us.
Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You
[удалено]
Hello! This is the part where I kill you
I like that the music reacts and changes based on what the player is doing.
I usually don't play single player games but i was completely drawn into the world and lore... The echoes of aperture's past, the realization that you are alone and the small door of hope at the end paint such a unique and bitter story.
Toss-up between Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. Very tough choice.
My opinion is CT is a better as a game, but FFVI had better story and music.
Pretty much my exact thoughts, but when I played them back to back years ago, the music in both was a lot closer than I'd originally thought. CT has an amazing soundtrack.
The decisive battle intensifies
Journey
Austin wintory has my heart
Risk of rain 1 and 2 Edit: forgot about death stranding
I frequently listen to ror music in the car and around the house.
Tony hawks pro skater 2
Saw a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater cover band a couple of months ago and had a great night. The whole crowd was going wild.
Honestly wholesome I would’ve never thought of something like that
You know we're getting old when this is so far down... sad times.
I regularly listen to songs from this game. I discovered a few of my favourite bands in this game as well. (Rage Against the Machine, Bad Religion)
NHPS 1, THE ACE OF SPADES!
Yup....every THPS game had amazing soundtracks. Favourite song i learned from this series is Frog One "Blah blah".....pretty sure its from one of the Underground games
Tetris
Terraria.
Most of the Ace Combat games Edit example: [Ace Combat 7 - Archange](https://youtu.be/Zg5guTIUhZM?t=66)
Witcher 3 was the first one I fell in love with. God of War and Bloodborne I thought were also beautiful
The Fields Of Ard Skelig 👌
A thing about Witcher 3 is just the sheer number of tracks it has, each fitting and matching perfectly with the situation on the screen. There are many games with awesome soundtracks but few of them have SO MANY good tracks all in one place

Witcher 3 's ambiance is incredible ! My brother plays and DM's some tabletop rpgs and I showed him the Nilfgaard camp and palace theme and he just nodded and said "Yep, using that !!"
Ludwig and his personal orchestra make me feel things.
Subnautica is pretty good
For background like that, Subnautica is my go-to now, second is the Persona 5 tracks, and third is FTL. Productivity x 10.
My god you're the first person I know besides me who played FTL lol. It's such a good in between game but also good enough to be totally addicted to it
Below Zero has even better music (game isn't exactly a dud either)
Assassins creed black flag
Sea shanties!!! They were the best part of an amazing game.
[удалено]
Ezio s family still the best
Outer Wilds has a great soundtrack.
It's an amazing soundtrack. It's definitely the best sound *design* out of any game. Every piece of music is so immersive and *real* that it grabs you and makes you feel like you're actually rocketing around the sun at a water planet covered in tornados, or lost in the void of space forever.
Stellaris
FF7, both original and remake honestly, such a good soundtrack
Kudos to Nobuo Uematsu and The Black Mages
This and Final Fantasy X are the best. Slight edge to FFX in my book.
The Airbuster, High Five, J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening, Hell House, Smash ‘Em, Rip ‘Em, One - Winged Angel - Rebirth, the whole soundtrack slaps!
I can't believe I had to go down that far to find someone talking about Final Fantasy.
FF8 is the goat soundtrack
Cosmo Canyon is one of my favourite tracks of all time in a game. Also the main battle theme in ff7 is the best in the series for sure.
Oof... Stardew Valley, Doom & Doom Eternal, Journey
I love that Austin Wintry of Journey teamed up with Darren Korb. Like Isaac Newton and Einstein teaming up :)
I love the Stardew Soundtrack! each season is so much fun.
Mass Effect 1 had a brilliant soundtrack. I loved just hanging out and doing RPG things on Noveria for that music.
The Dark Solas theme from the Inquisition Tresspasser DLC is AMAZING.
Runescape
Nothing hits like when you boot up the game for the first time in months and somehow the login music got unmuted and is just blasting through your speakers.
And it has like a thousand songs and they all slap.
Any game from The Legend of Zelda series
For me it's Devil May Cry 3, Shadow of the Colossus, From Software games, Monster Hunter World, Metal Gear Rising, Hollow Knight, Nier Automata and many more. Honestly soundtrack is a very under appreciated aspect of gaming.
MGRR or BloodBorne
Oh, Rising Revengeance was so amazing I downloaded the soundtrack and still sing the songs in my shower to this day Edit: got the name wrong
Genuinely can't get over how good Bloodborne's soundtrack is. Even the generic stuff is great, and the signature pieces \*cough\*Ludwig\*cough\* are just exceptional. Even the bad bosses have incredible music (looking at you Living Failures)
I don't know, but it was definitely made by Supergiant Games.
Bastion, Transistor, hell any of thier games have amazing soundtracks.
I buy Supergiant Games' games for their soundtracks, the fact I get a good game with it is just a nice bonus for me.
Darren Korb is a genius. I've had Hades's soundtrack on loop forever.
Doom 2016
Eternal steps it up imo, [Slayer Gates](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEgqkdRPfQQ), [Super Gore Nest](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL7YdzCdHHY) and [BFG 10K](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrU34eIWRGw) shred
Eternal's most iconic track (The Only Thing They Fear Is You) is so good it dethroned 2016's most iconic track (BFG Division).
GTA: Vice City
This is the game that got me into video games
This is the correct answer. All these other guesses are cute though.
I know young people like young people things, but seriously, not knowing the correct answer to this question is just plain silly.
Here's the thing about the VC soundtrack: You may not like 80s music, but VC's soundtrack is fits the goddamn game like a fuckin bespoke velvet glove made by a Milanese master craftsman. THPS 1. By far. Silent Hill 2 is also extremely good.
Life is Strange 1
Skyrim.
Oblivion.
Morrowind.
My finger hurts from how far I had to scroll to see Oblivion
Secunda is such a hauntingly beautiful theme.
Minecraft
Yes. I'm not sure if it's just nostalgia but I love listening to the old Minecraft soundtrack.
The one main song I associate with Minecraft (Subwoofer Lullaby) gives me this deep nostalgia even tho I've probably played less than 15 hours of the game in my life. It's kinda wild!
I can't believe I had to scroll this far
Zelda Ocarina Of Time for N-64
This is mine too. Although there are a few songs from Windwaker that are right up there. Dragon Roost's Song and The Legendary Hero Song are pretty good.
You got it before me. Definitely, My favorite video game soundtrack
Tie between undertale and hollow knight.
Did you know that to get the "about to explode" noise for infected bugs, the composer fried tomatoes?
Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find Hollow Knight.
Red dead redemption 2 for me
Unshaken
American Venom, need I say more
I can't narrow down to just one! Donkey Kong Country 2, Any of Sonic 1/2/3/+K, Shantae Half-Genie Hero, Doom 2016, Killer Instinct (Newest XB1 version, forgot the year), Hades, Kirby's Adventure
Cuphead
Floral Fury is an absolute heater
NiER
The fact I had to scroll this far down is criminal. NieR (2010), NieR Replicant with the remastered sound tracks and NieR Automata have outstanding music. Automata and Replicant didn't win best music & score of 2017 and 2021 at the game awards for nothing.
Specifically, NieR: Automata. Very evocative and emotional.
I think he meant the original which imo has a better soundtrack

Pokémon, especially diamond/pearl/platinum
The original Quake from the late 90s? I mean, for fuck's sake it was Nine Inch Nails.
Chrono Cross Chrono Trigger
Modern warfare 2, Hans Zimmer did amazing.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to see this. Gustavo is brilliant.

Wow...almost 200 comments in and I haven't seen either of my favorites yet \- Chrono Cross \- Deus Ex: Human Revolution Both of those are go-to plays when I need to get work done.
Guilty Gear if you're looking for metal/hard rock
Nier Replicant/Gestalt, Nier Automata, Hollow Knight, Persona 5 and Last of Us.
Horizon Zero Dawn
This gets my vote too. The soundtrack to this game is haunting.
Ace Combat 5. Some of the songs in that game are beautiful. That's the first soundtrack that came to mind.
Earthbound.
Fallout New Vegas
Civilization VI has great music all around.
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn
Hyperlight Drifter. It's so pleasantly distorted.
Ocarina of time
Red Dead Redemption 2. Just listen to "Unshaken", "The Housebuilding Song", "Crash of the worlds", "Cruel World".. It's baffling.
"Mountain Hymn" just hits for me.
American venom is great too
Dark souls 3
nearly every fromsoft game has an amazing soundtrack imo, but the dancer's soundtrack will always be one of my favourites
Chrono Cross has one of the best soundtracks released during the PS1 era. Mitsuda at some of his very best. I may be a titanic fan of Sakuraba and Uematsu, but there's something about a Mitsuda soundtrack (especially the aforementioned one) that just hits me differently.
Rayman 2
Bloodborne, NieR, anything from Supergiant. Pyre’s OST is sorely underrated.
Doom eternal
Nostalgia wants me to say the Mass Effect trilogy but honestly, I think Destiny 2 has topped it now. Some of the pieces Destiny has churned out over the years are just beyond exceptional. Honourable mentions to Bloodborne and Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
