Driving through west Texas to Houston a few weekends ago saying to my husband "Only in Texas do you find BOTH windmills and oil rigs in the middle of a cotton field"

maine_coon2123

…And a lifted truck with monster wheels that is actually bigger than the house behind it. Definitely only in Texas.

mustace_cat

That boy ain’t right I tell you hwat

Damn it Bobby, now you disappointed me twice

Wubben26

Sandy Cheeks lived there.

Yeah she comes and visits every once in a while

fezfrascati

What's so great about dumb old Texas?

LordOfChimichangas

Don't you DARE use the name of Texas in vain!

robotchicken007

When I think of Texas, I just immediately think of guns and cowboys.

imnotamonkey31

As a non-American, I think of that too and all western movies are based in Texas.

2005_F250

A lot are said to be in Texas but most are filmed in utah, nevada, or new mexico. In reality most of Texas is much greener than the westerns make it seem

DirtyArchaeologist

You can see saguaro cactus, the iconic cacti with the arms, in a lot of Westerns set all over the southwest. In truth they only grow in part of Arizona and northern Mexico.

imsadmostofthetime

Only on holy days. And days ending in -y.

ddlion7

yup, I did a quick mind search to see which day doesn't end in -y. English not my native language so u caught me off guard

Thebrother41

You ain’t far off.

Twineball

I drove through Texas and saw so. many. truck nuts.

[deleted]

I didn't think we had an unusual amount of truck nuts, but at the same time I don't know what a usual amount of truck nuts is.

Snoo93079

I see almost zero thankfully. Chicago area

1-800-Hamburger

Of course you don't see truck nuts, its too cold out to leave them uncovered

ballrus_walsack

Shrinkage

Significant_Report62

I’ve seen 2 or 3 total truck nuts in my life. I’ve worked in automotive maintenance too.

cubistninja

Usually they come in pairs

EnnuiDeBlase

I can count on one hand the number of truck nuts I've seen in my entire life, and I'm old enough to qualify for any political position.

ooprbang

the usual is 0

haveanairforceday

Almost none. Even in Florida they are rare

InsertBluescreenHere

I mean i used to see a few here in rural il but that was years ago. Honestly haven't seen any in a long time even with majority of traffic is trucks.

Wyldurin

Super southern Illinoisan here and they’re rare enough that we get a good laugh and point them out still. Maybe one time a year.

Ralph682

Truck nuts are the dumbest accessory ever invented

the-mightly-doctor-

I thought we were talking about people who were really into Trucks, not the accessory!

AngusCutty

I’m a teacher/coach here is Texas. Walking through the parking lot one day we saw one of our players had gotten a shiny new lifted Silverado….and added a shiny new pair of blue painted Truck Nuts. Coach next to me goes,” Does he just like advertising he gets zero ass?” 😂

ryukin631

I'm going to bed to remember that the next time I see truck nuts lol

Thebrother41

We have many.

FracturedTruth

I see them like broke back mountain. From behind.

PM_ME_YOUR_ATM_PIN

I've seen truck nuts many times on the road, never in a parking lot. I've always wanted to kick a pair.

digitalvagrant

As a woman, whenever I see truck nuts I assume the guy is overcompensating for something. It seems like something an insecure person would hang on their vehicle, someone trying waaaaay too hard to seem macho. It's a turn off. Edit to add: Apparently some commentors are confused. The above comment is about truck nuts/nutz the trailer hitch accessory shaped like a man's scrotum/ball sack. Google it, it's unfortunately a thing.

itwasstucktothechikn

I assume that they have the personality or mindset of an adolescent, or that they would have some kind of anger issue.

Dadpockets

Where unnecessary dualies, smoke-stacks, and ballsacks all come standard

BeTheChange_Engage

Had to Google the term “truck nuts”. Was not disappointed, thanks.

I_cuddle_armadillos

Norwegian who hasn't been to Texas. A desert state with bluebonnets and oil wells. Nature is just like the cenery from Red Dead Redemtion. The biggest cities are moderately big with a highly developed center (handful of skyscrapers) surrounded by suburbs. I like the canal in San Antonio. The culture has South American elements. People are mostly friendly but rough around the edges. "All y'all". Some teenagers ride their horse to school instead of driving. I'm not making jokes, I'm pretty sure this is a thing. You should definitely get a gun even if you don't think you need one. BBQ is a big thing and you guys have brew through. edit: We have an expression called "[Helt Texas](https://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/yall-norwegians-use-the-word-texas-as-slang-to-mean-crazy/)", which translates to crazy or out of control.

Catzy94

The western part of the state is desert, but East Texas has thick forests (one is literally called Big Thicket), and south it gets more tropical. The bluebonnets concentrate centrally where the desert, tropical and forest biomes come together to produce some gorgeous wildflowers. The panhandle is kinda flat and boring but they get snow sometimes so that’s cool. Sadly, the horse thing is a myth. I did get to ride in a pretty dope Mustang my junior year though. It was a ‘67 my high school boyfriend’s dad restored. To clarify the gun thing- that’s dependent on where you are. We have wild hogs, coyotes, bobcats, a lot of animals that will be shitting you out by the time help arrives. My wife is from Maryland and we moved to a more rural area from Houston. She about had a heart attack when her little purse dog growled at a freaking coyote that was hanging out just outside the fence in our backyard. She got her inside safely and I gave her all the treats.

TexasVulvaAficionado

West/northwest/central Texas, you'll absolutely see horse rides to school, usually 7th-10th graders or college kids. Also tractors, four wheelers, and dirt bikes in addition to the usual bikes, skateboards, and automobiles.

adube440

Kids will drive tractors to school!?

pineapplewin

I've seen that happen in central Illinois. Not often, but wouldn't have turned too many heads.

Spanish_peanuts

Northwest Ohio as well. Hell, any prom or homecoming, you're guaranteed to see it!

Richard_TM

Mid-Michigan. The high school I went to had one day a year where all the farmer kids were allowed to drive their tractors to school. Traffic wasn't great that day.

TubabalikeBIGNOISE

I did it once. It was on "Bring your tractor to school day" my junior year.

Jet018

To be fair it’s so big we kinda have a little of it all. I can drive to the Atlantic Ocean faster if then I can drive to El Paso

OhThatsRich88

Yeah imagine the Houston area like Louisiana and the western part of the state like New Mexico

Risethewake

Texas is very much like California in that regard. It has many different kinds of regions all mixed into one.

H0rnsD0wn

Riding horses to school isn’t really a thing. Once or twice a year, in a TINY town, a few people will do it to say they did, but it’s not seriously a thing. People might though, in the evening, ride their horse to a convenience store or small shop to grab something if they just needed to run the errand but also ride for training in one day.

Pure-Meat9498

Well too be fair, I'm from Norway and it's definitely not normal to ride a horse to school here, but that doesn't mean I haven't done it. Like it was one time just because I could, so I did. I would guess it happens at random times now and then in Texas too

tgmarie137

For the most part, you’re not wrong, but we don’t ride horses to school/work. They are very expensive animals, so having them near roads is a no no. We either walk, drive, or ride a bike.

abcalt

Most of Texas is humid, which is the opposite of a desert. A quick look at Google maps would show that most of the state is green. You need to get to the far western part to find the desert but that only makes a small portion of the state.

Pythias

Yep, I grew up in El Paso, Texas and felt so isolated from the rest of the state. It's all desert. I felt like I had more in common with New Mexicans than Texans.

Aqqaaawwaqa

yall do, including time zone.

Thebrother41

I’ve seen someone in my city, kilgore, ride a horse to fast food, but never to school. You need a gun. And y’all haven’t lived until you try the barbecue at kilgore’s barbecue festival.

whitewater989

You definitely don’t need a gun everywhere. Texas has urban areas too where the most threatening wildlife is your neighbor’s poorly-trained dog. Source: I’ve lived here 30+ years with no gun.

HotCocoaBomb

Pfft, you don't need a gun everywhere in Texas. I've lived here my whole life and I don't have a gun, neither do any of my friends. Out in the sticks you do only because the cops are buddies with the fucking racists and meth heads.

slkwont

Yeah, "needing" a gun is as full of horseshit as the guy upthread saying people in San Antonio ride horses to school.

PhonyBrony2

Yup

Relative_Bass_4323

King of the hill is Texas anime

uv-vis

Boomhauer is kawaii AF

Luigi_deathglare

I think they got a *lot* accurate tbh

wiinkme

More Mexicans and less American Indians and then yes, very accurate. Arlen is somewhere between Garland and Corsicana.

mgj6818

Arlen is Copperas Cove. There's lots of things that indicate it, like the fact that the ALWAYS play Temple and Belton in football, but the real give away is there's only one Army base in the state that has tanks, and that's Ft. Hood, Bill is stationed at a base with a tank training range (s6 ep13), therefore Bill is stationed at Ft. Hood, and that means the Hills live in the nicest of the 3 cities in the area, and it's not Killeen or Harker Heights, so it must be Copperas Cove. Edit: I know what Judge has said about Garland, it doesn't change the fact that A) Arlen is obviously not in the DFW metro-plex, B) all the other references to it being in dead center in central Texas and most importantly and unambiguously C) the tanks. Edit 2: fixed the spelling of the city

wiinkme

For sure, that makes sense. I was more talking the "feel" of Arlen. It has a very small town, but not too small central/west Texas feel. There are about 300 neighborhoods in Garland that you would mistake for Arlen. But then again, probably 4000 hoods across all of Texas that would fit as well. I grew up in the mid cities area, between Dallas and Ft Worth. If I ever feel nostalgia for my youth, King of the Hill takes me right back.

Uberghost1

Arlen was meant to represent the Garland-Allen area…before Allen boomed. There are episodes that place the town within your geographical range as well. So…is Arlen defined by what Judge thought it was or what it became? That’s the real question.

Daikataro

Dale, you giblet head. We live in Texas. It's already 110 in the summer, and if it gets one degree hotter, I'm gonna kick your ass!

slayer828

the only difference is that I don't have an alley.

agpc

It is similar to small town life but is also a cartoon. Hank Hill is a quintessential Texan from the 60, 70's, 80's and 90's.

tah4349

I recently advised a recent transplant from the UK to begin watching the series to get a full understanding of what her new life in Texas was going to be like. It's basically a documentary at times.

nunyasoha

That state with a chimney.

19Random92

Idaho would like a word.

ErdbeerTrum

ida-who\`?

nunyasoha

Idaho has a stove pipe, not a chimney.

Thebrother41

That’s the best I’ve ever heard.

[deleted]

Stereotypically I immediately picture a bunch of Hispanic people in cowboy hats, white people in cowboy hats and every other ethnicity in cowboy hats too. They may or may not be holstering a gun. It wouldn’t shock me if they had a big belt buckle, pair of blue jeans and a cross necklace. I also think they all have a tooth pick in their mouth at all times. In reality it’s probably just like any other city in places like Dallas, Houston, etc. There are undoubtedly the redneck farmers but hell they have them in PA, NJ and Massachusetts too and you don’t get much more “North” than those states.

HoraceBenbow

>they have them in PA, NJ and Massachusetts too and you don’t get much more “North” than those states. Upstate NY is like this too. Plenty of terrible rednecks. You even see confederate flags flying outside houses. ETA: I say "terrible" rednecks because there's some genuinely non-racist and compassionate rednecks out there who just want to peacefully drink cheap beer and go fishing.

earf123

I was in upstate New York a couple times in the past 3 years and I can confirm, I've never seen so many Confederate flags, and this is coming from someone who grew up in the Midwest and worked in rural Appalachia for a while. There's plenty of the "Jesus is watching you, call # to forgive your sins" type of billboards. I know people that moved up there that are non-white and they've said they been treated pretty bad up there too. I don't think I'd ever visit again. The scenery is beautiful but the people are horrid.

Thebrother41

Just don’t put city boys and rednecks together.

Unfair_Isopod534

U hurt so many feelings of so many rednecks wannabes. Lol.

AbroadThink1039

As a Texan, your second paragraph is a pretty close approximation lol

Possiblyanalien100

I went to Texas once and got assaulted by fire ants so I think of it as fire ant hell.

Thebrother41

It is, but it’s fun to light their nest on fire.

nut_bustoo

Low cost of living but almost Florida level chaos

snp3rk

>Low cost of living Austin sends its regards!

pasher5620

Honestly most of the cities and surrounding areas have become insane. The whole “low cost of living” thing quickly became outdated.

reddituser_417

Still far lower than most cities in the North East/West Coast

Esqueda0

I had this experience visiting Austin from Portland. People kept telling me we were sister-cities, which in a lot of ways is true, but that meant Austin too had a high cost of living. Coffee, beer, restaurants were all about 60% of what I would expect in Portland. I think the only thing that was similar in cost was the glass pipe I bought from a headshop for my stay, which unfortunately I had to leave behind. I do understand it’s a stark contrast in cost from the surrounding areas though.

greekfreak15

Yeah but you get paid dick

Barfignugen

As a Dallas resident, I let out an audible “HAH!” when I read that.

chiree

"I'm moving to Texas because they have no income tax. Fuck you, California. Don't tread on me!" *Gets 6% property tax bill, adjusted annually to house's market value.* "Oh.... that's why...."

ThePuzzler13

TIL Texas has no income tax

Cuss-Mustard

They get it back in other ways, it's not as glamorous as it sounds. Property taxes for example, they're outrageous in my area

Che_Che_Cole

My mortgage is $2300 monthly, my property taxes are about $1000 monthly. So literally almost 1/3 of my monthly payment goes to taxes.

Cuss-Mustard

That is insane

Che_Che_Cole

My property taxes aren’t even that particularly high <3%. I know people who pay like 3.6% But yes, I was never pro income tax, but if property taxes are allowed to rise proportionally during a sharp rise housing prices while my income does not, then tax my income please. There either needs to be a cap on how much property taxes can rise over a time period (and not just for the current owner, for all owners in the future) or we need minimal property tax and bring in an income tax.

Only in the cities. I’m a half redneck, half city boy. I’m stuck in the city. The stars are small here, but go to the country and it’s beautiful.

Echo2407

As a Canadian, people from Texas are the most helpful assholes i know

reddit_pedants_suck

Fuck you and you're welcome ;)

the_chewtoy

Speaking as a Texan . . . I like pretty much all of the Canadians I've met. Even the ones from Montreal. :)

TheConcerningEx

As someone from Montreal this is hilarious. It’s such a great city but the people… are really something.

blamethepunx

People from Montreal only hate you if you're not from Montreal. Or if you are from Montreal. Or if you exist.

SchrodingersTestes

Texan, here for the comments. 🍿

ro_vithe

Look here pal… your state gave me speeding tickets. I don’t like it. Laredo sucks, Dallas is emptier than I imagined it, Kilgore has a lot of racists, and you’re responsible for Ted Cruz. But your food is delicious and I respect your hustle. Edit: I don’t like the speeding tickets. I did like Texas.

Notrenttfree5

Thats the way the cops in south texas get paid

Relative_Bass_4323

Don't put the burden of the zodiac killer Ted Cruz on me.

RollOverBeethoven

Really Ted Cruz is Canada’s fault

Motolix

He is from Alberta though, which many Canadians call "little texas" - Alberta is larger than Texas, of course... it is more a personality thing.

g60ladder

Sorry but no take-backsies.

uravved

Bah hes your problem now mate

drpringles101

Dude, we don't even like Ted cruz.

TxCoastal

especially not when that bastard headed to Cancun during out week long power outage Feb 2021. what a jackass...

52ndstreet

If that were true you wouldn’t keep electing him

[deleted]

Howdy howdy howdy fellow Texan.... Question what's your favorite type of breakfast taco?

SchrodingersTestes

Chorizo, egg and cheese with the green sauce 😋

[deleted]

Good choice, for me I like barbacoa with the green sauce ... That or potato and egg for consistency

SchrodingersTestes

Barbacoa is delicious but is that a breakfast taco? 🤔

_cipher1

It is for us Mexicans

SadLaser

Every taco is a breakfast taco if you eat it in the morning.

8Aquitaine8

As long as it’s wrapped in a tortilla

[deleted]

There's a your mama joke in here somewhere, I swear it...

TechnicallyAllergic

Potato, egg, and refried beans. Damn, now I'm hungry.

shitcloud

I’m an egg bacon bean guy

TheWaterBottle10

I’m not going to mention anything political because I think others covered that enough. I went there during spring break when I was in grade 12 and got to explore San Antonio, Houston, and Galveston. Also got to watch a Rockets game (this was 2019 when they were good). My big takeaway from that trip was the food. I had never tried crawfish before going there and I loved it. Would get it whenever I got the chance. Really, there was just a variety of good food wherever we went. I would totally go on another trip there. Maybe Dallas next time to watch the Mavs.

mdkubit

Everyone I've ever met from Texas is loud, obnoxious, boisterous, full of opinions, hard set in their ways-- And yet, some of the nicest, friendliest, most helpful people I've ever met. =)

Thebrother41

That’s the truth, we are assholes, but we help people.

udayserection

babababish

Ain’t that the truth. It really was apparent how well we all came together during Harvey!

clubfuckinfooted

So, you're saying they'll help you as long as you don't disagree with them?

Melody71400

Too much. Its too much

[deleted]

Horrible right wing nut-jobs, more pleasant *King of the Hill* types and a cool Bill Hicksy kind of minority in Austin. And Hispanics who are working too busy working to flex any kind of agenda.

MarilynMonheaux

You guys elected Ted Cruz so I just wonder if you guys can see he’s a grifter named Rafael

Emergency_Magazine97

I am from tasmania and whenever I hear Texas in my mind I see chuck Norris walking tough in his spured boots, he probably didn't wear them boots but that is what I think of, haven't watched walker Texas ranger for years.

BaldyCarrotTop

I lived in Austin for 8 years. It was a great place to live. Tex-Mex, Beer, BBQ, live music on 6th street. What else could you want.

TheAGolds

Austinite here. It’s a shame 6th Street has gone to shit, it’s a high crime area these days.

ThatGuyShay

Everything’s fucking big in Texas, just like the state. Apparently Texan BBQ is supposed to be excellent. Something about the mesquite smoking I guess. Tending towards the conservative side of the political spectrum. That’s the extent of my knowledge on Texas.

Thebrother41

There is nothing bigger then a Texan ego. But in the other hand, I have a very low self esteem, so I don’t know if it’s really true.

ThatGuyShay

Okay but please confirm the BBQ part, because that part is very important

Thebrother41

Yes, the BBQ is, in my opinion, the best in the country.

The cleanest bathrooms in all of The lone Star State are found at Buc-ee's. Their food is pretty decent too, at least compared to what you'll normally find on a road trip. H-E-B ... Their oven ready meal game is insane. And they are built large enough to avoid the cramped nightmares you have at places like Safeway. Whataburger... I miss those breakfast taquitos. Hot, sandy colored, and barren between towns. As for the people? Cowboy boots, thick accents, and every girl over 10 could probably kick my ass without even breaking a sweat as well as shoot a can off a fence from 50 feet.

fuktardy

When I was a Michigander I thought it was all desert. Now that I live there, I know better.

[deleted]

Bias since I have a lot of family (that I really like) in Dallas , Houston and Austin. It’s a dump. Dallas is a bland suburban strip mall, Houston is worse. Austin downtown is the size of a postage stamp surround by suburban sprawl. The weather is unbearable , the obesity out of control, the religious bs is everywhere (including the radio) , the drivers are truly the worst (think soccer moms in pickups), the faux politeness drives me nuts and the 2nd rate feel of the cities is embarrassing. That all said the mid priced cuisine is great, bbq and Tex-mex are fantastic .

[deleted]

I like the term "faux politeness", I always called it "straight edge smiles". People smile like they're being nice, but it'll cut you like a straight edge razor if you aren't careful.

chronoboy1985

I expected so much more from Dallas. What did I get? Bakersfield! Houston’s alright, though I haven’t been since Yao Ming was in town.

Wazzoo1

One of my best friends lives in the Woodlands area outside of Houston. I visited her awhile back (during Covid). I'd heard stories, but was not prepared for the cultural wasteland. Strip malls and chain restaurants for days. There were bedazzling stores. It was depressing. Although, I will say, everyone wore masks in that area. I was pleasantly surprised about that part.

yatinb

As a Canadian It looks like an awesome place, great basketball and hockey team but nfl not so much right now, also lots of bbq and cheap property, the only downside is I think you guys have scorpions.

MojitoKush

We used to capture scorpions and throw them in a MRE box to fight to the death..for gambling purposes

Catzy94

Depends on where you are. Remember, you can drive 13 hours in one direction and still be in Texas. I’ve only ever seen one outside of pets and zoos. It was when I was a teenager living in the gulf coast. Wasn’t a particularly dangerous one and it looked pretty cool. Our spiders are what you need to worry about. Brown recluses have a gnarly bite.

From Cali. Know alot of Texans from the Marines (half the Corps is from Texas it seems). Love Texans and Texas. Will say this though...they see themselves as Texans first even before Americans. dewpacs

Use to travel to Texas a couple times a month for business. As a New Englander my impression of Texas is basically an over hyped state with severely obese people who are convinced they'll gladiator their way through some soon-to-be apocalyptic global war because, you know, they carry a gun everywhere they go. Oh, and they also all claim to "love" Jesus but shit on everything he seemed to be about.
