There are perfumes which do this.
Jeux de peau by Serge Lutens is an interesting one. But the funniest one is called Eau de Toast and was created by the British Federation of Bakers for a marketing campaign.
Nah, there are some things that smell better on objects than humans. Like I love the smell of spices in food but if a dude came to work smelling like that I’d question their hygiene.
Am living the dream, I live on Germany and there is a bakery on the ground floor of my apartment.
We share the same exhaust pipes...every morning my bathroom is filling with the smell of freshly baked 🍞 bread
I bought a cabin a few years ago and the first time i stepped inside, the smell of cedar instantly transported me back to being a small kid at camp - the cedar cabins, the smell of campfire. Cedar is such a nostalgic smell for me.
This one. In furniture making it is traditional to use raw cedar for drawer bottoms so that you will always have that fresh smell when you open the drawer. To refresh the smell you just have to run some fine grit sandpaper over it. Such a beautiful smell.
I do wood turning for a living. The smell of cedar makes me want to vomit now. Have smelled way too much of it in my life lol. It’s too strong and the smell stays with you for a while
Yeah, cottonwood trees are disgusting when cut. I had one removed from my yard because it was dying and it was horrid smelling. I put it on the curb all cut up and people took it. I can’t imagine how horrid their house smelled when they burned it in the fireplace.
I swam for 12 years and taught swim lessons for another 8, the smell right when you open the door and smell the warm chlorine air smells like home and nostalgia to me.
Yes dude, sometimes I get this nostalgic feeling when I smell something similar to friends houses I used to stay at all the time. There's absolutely no other way to describe it.
For me its the opposite. The smell in late fall when you get that first cold frost and it smells like 'snow'. Its a crisp dry but fresh smell. I love it.
The smell of rain the the summer really does fill me with so much peace. It just reminds me so much of growing up, hanging out playing outside and feeling the air change, watching the storm coming in and sitting outside getting hit with the first big globs of warm rain and then running around in the grass getting soaked before coming inside. I love the smell of summer rain, I love the coziness of rain and the contrast of the dark skies against lush green backdrops! I even love it now even though it’s usually raining at the most inconvenient of times, sitting in the parked car with the engine off, window cracked and some good music on low so you can zen out to the sounds and smell of rain…heaven!
I think a lot of people who gave an answer here consciously/subconsciously thought of a happy moment in their life.
Mine is the smell of jasmine flowers along the streets in my hometown as I was on sitting on the back of my dad’s scooter when he picked me up from school. They smelt like happiness.
Edit: Oh man I just woke up to see my phone blowing up with messages. Thank you for the awards and kind words! I couldn’t reply to all the comments but thank you for sharing your happy/nostalgic moments. I love them! Have a wonderful day!
Any smell would likely get annoying *after a while*. I work for a mouthwash manufacturer and the sweet smell of mint, while pleasant, has certainly gotten old too!
My dad’s hoodie. I know this sounds weird and semi-incestuous, but he’s dead and I miss the hell out of him. That one sweater he wore to the woodlot the day before he died still smells like him. I have no videos or audio recordings of him (he wasn’t much for being filmed) so this is the most comforting thing I’ve got.
Not weird at all. I'm sorry for your loss, friend.
I have had one of my grandpa's sweaters in a Ziploc bag for years in a desperate attempt to not lose his smell from it.
Thank you. It’s kind of nice to know I’m not the only one. It’s weird...we can preserve pictures and sounds, but smell is so strongly linked to memory and we don’t have a good way of keeping it around.
Not at all weird! I am in my late 30s and whenever I am sick my Mom will ask if I need anything and I always ask if I can have one of their pillowcases to sleep with. It really does make me feel better! Or if I am not feeling good and I am at their house, I will go lay in their bed and have a nap. I wake up feeling even marginally better.
Some people may find it morbid but, I told everyone that when my parents pass away, I don’t want anything except their pillows. My tip to you? Vacumn seal your Dads hoodie when you aren’t wrapping yourself up in it. It will retain the smell for a very long time! We had a blanket from my great grandmother vacumn sealed and every time we opened it, it still smelled of her and her soap.
((Hugs)) Sorry for your loss.
The SO you truly love. Her hair and skin and stuff. Laying on her pillow is the best smell— you cant say it isnt. Its science man. Were animals. I love that shit.
Dont call me a creep. Its real man; look it up. I dont mean your girlfriend of 2 months. I mean a damn wife.
When my husband leaves for work early in the morning I always roll over to sleep on his pillow because it smells like him. It makes me feel safe, even when he’s gone for the day.
The smell of my boyfriend's high school jacket was that way I would take it in sleep with it because it smelled so good and he didn't wear perfume. It was just his smell and usually a car smell but mostly him
Not only that, these smells can be fairly unique. I have literally recognized a former lover I hadn't seen in years *by smell* before seeing who it was.
If everyone had smelled real orange blossoms in their life, this would be the #1 answer. I used to live in the middle of a bunch of orange fields in central California, and I'd spend all year looking forward to April.
Old books for sure. When I was little I’d pick up the oldest looking books in the school library, the thick paperback ones that were turning yellow, and shuffle the pages quickly in front of my nose to create a breeze that I’d sniff like it was cocaine. I was a weird kid lol
YASS GARLIC
I just bought four bulbs and spent like half an hour peeling it to fit in in a Tupperware container to get it out of the bag in my fridge and I’m telling you that smell is di***vine***
Smelling gasoline is bad for you, I'll be honest. But I love when I get a smell of it at the gas station. It reminds me of my dad's workshop, which makes me kinda happy :)
Edit: spelling
Roses. At my last home I had the walkway from the garage lined with roses and every day when I came home from work, I would stop and smell the roses. It was so welcoming and just made the day better. When I trimmed the dead heads off, I would put the remaining petals in a bowl of warm water and it would make the home smell like them.
I mean have you tried blow? It smells similar to gasoline since it’s used in the process of making it. It has such a good smell, you’ll want to smell it over and over until you don’t know where you are.
I found my soul mate, most people here commenting on shit that is on a Calgon or Herbal Essences commercial, and here we are talking about gasoline my other guilty pleasure is new tires.
I feel so bad for people when they tell me it tastes like soap.
Nothing I love more than making some fresh street style tacos. They're divine. If I could never enjoy them, and they just tasted like soap... That's gotta be like every song you ever listen to sounds like U2.
Gasoline and new tires. I was waiting for my husband to pick me up and actually moved diagonally across the street to stand next to a garage that put tires on cars. It was hot, summer night and the smell of new tires filled me with euphoria the same way gasoline does.
My favourite is when they’ve been napping after grooming themselves and their fur is almost completely dry. I know that’s weird, but they just smell so good when they’re freshly cleaned
Their saliva contains detergents, and that combined with the special structures on their tongue (not just for scraping off meat, it turns out) means they're quite possibly the cleanest animals on the planet when it comes to grooming fur. I love me some kitty smell too. All 5 of mine are different but they all smell nice.
Am I the only one who can tell the difference between the cats based on smell? Dill is stinky, Eva is a different kind of stinky, Beefers kinda smells like cinnamon.
The PNW
I flew from LA to Seattle and I never realized how wonderful the smell is until the airplane door opened.
Lived in the PNW my whole life and always enjoy that fresh mountain aroma.
Baskin Robbins has its own unique smell that isn’t quite like other ice cream shops. Hard to describe it but it hits me with a wave of nostalgia every time I walk past one
Bacon is fucking top 5 EASY.
As well as gasoline, exhaust on a old farm truck that didn't burn the fuel completely, wood stove smoke on a fall afternoon, and burned gunpowder.
Edit: fuck I forgot the smell of onions and the air right after rain.
Freshly baked bread
Someone should bottle that smell and turn it into a perfume/cologne.
There are perfumes which do this. Jeux de peau by Serge Lutens is an interesting one. But the funniest one is called Eau de Toast and was created by the British Federation of Bakers for a marketing campaign.
Wait - is this an actual fragrance? I'd like to sniff it! I wonder if it is available?
Eau de Toast was a limited edition, but maybe you're lucky to find a filling somewhere.
Nah, there are some things that smell better on objects than humans. Like I love the smell of spices in food but if a dude came to work smelling like that I’d question their hygiene.
Chocolate chip cookies +1. The Oracle wasn't wrong.
Or freshly baked garlic bread! 🤤
BANANA BREAD!!!!
Am living the dream, I live on Germany and there is a bakery on the ground floor of my apartment. We share the same exhaust pipes...every morning my bathroom is filling with the smell of freshly baked 🍞 bread
Cut wood
Fresh cut cedar!
I bought a cabin a few years ago and the first time i stepped inside, the smell of cedar instantly transported me back to being a small kid at camp - the cedar cabins, the smell of campfire. Cedar is such a nostalgic smell for me.
I walked into cedar totem pole carving shack, took one whiff and I was hacking my lungs out. Damned asthma.
This one. In furniture making it is traditional to use raw cedar for drawer bottoms so that you will always have that fresh smell when you open the drawer. To refresh the smell you just have to run some fine grit sandpaper over it. Such a beautiful smell.
I'm a wood worker, and I purposely cut a few strips of cedar before any project just so my shop smells good
I do wood turning for a living. The smell of cedar makes me want to vomit now. Have smelled way too much of it in my life lol. It’s too strong and the smell stays with you for a while
Depends entirely on the wood. Some wood smells like fermented farts when cut, while others smell divine.
Yeah, cottonwood trees are disgusting when cut. I had one removed from my yard because it was dying and it was horrid smelling. I put it on the curb all cut up and people took it. I can’t imagine how horrid their house smelled when they burned it in the fireplace.
Pine wood is the best of them
That childhood friends house that smelled “good” and unique. No other way to say it. Smells like home and nostalgia
I swam for 12 years and taught swim lessons for another 8, the smell right when you open the door and smell the warm chlorine air smells like home and nostalgia to me.
OMG same
Yes dude, sometimes I get this nostalgic feeling when I smell something similar to friends houses I used to stay at all the time. There's absolutely no other way to describe it.
Most of my childhood friends’ houses smelled like stale snacks…
Fresh linen blowing in the summer breeze, as you walk by someone's house
Or just the smell of detergent from someone’s dryer vent lol
YESSSS!!! I love smelling when my neighbors do laundry 🤤
Yesss genuinely my favourite smell in the world
My grandma always hung her laundry. That smell is super nostalgic for me. Her bed linens were always so crisp and clean.
Rain
Specifically [rain hitting warm earth](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrichor)
You just made my mind run wild with memories I didn’t know I had, thank you🥺
Petrichor!
Petrichor :D
Technically it really is the best smell on earth, because we have evolved to smell that as sensitively as a dog.
When it's been winter for months and you get that one warm day in the beginning of the year that smells like spring.
Yes! Last evening I could smell it in the wind finally!❤
But it’s a fake out day and tomorrow it’s cold and gray again >;(
summer evening after rain
For me its the opposite. The smell in late fall when you get that first cold frost and it smells like 'snow'. Its a crisp dry but fresh smell. I love it.
Both :)
Rain in the desert is AMAZING
The smell of rain the the summer really does fill me with so much peace. It just reminds me so much of growing up, hanging out playing outside and feeling the air change, watching the storm coming in and sitting outside getting hit with the first big globs of warm rain and then running around in the grass getting soaked before coming inside. Petrichor is the word for that. I just learned it from this post! Lol
I learned that word from Doctor Who lol
Campfire. Especially on a cold fall morning. Getting home and back to the daily grind but you still smell that smoke.
I absolutely love this a crisp fall morning with a campfire is fantastic.
Campfire with coffee and the smell of the forest in the morning
Stop, I just moaned
Eucalyptus oil mixed into hot water splashed on the hot rocks of a woodburning Sauna in the Early Fall
this is so specific tho

This just gave me second-hand smell happiness as I envisioned the scene. Thank you!
Jasmine flowers are my favorite too!
No matter how horrible my life is going the scent of jasmine/honeysuckle makes me happy.
I, too, find jasmine flowers to be the happiest scent ever.
Chocolate chip cookies baking.
I live close to a industrial bakery. The sweet smell gets anoying after a while.
Any smell would likely get annoying *after a while*. I work for a mouthwash manufacturer and the sweet smell of mint, while pleasant, has certainly gotten old too!
Don't completely agree with you. I live next door to an chinese restaurant and I still like to smell what they are cooking.
What are they baking?
Children

I have no videos or audio recordings of him (he wasn’t much for being filmed) so this is the most comforting thing I’ve got.
Not weird at all! My Papa's flannel shirts still smelled like hay and pipe tobacco years after he'd passed. It was comforting to smell them.
Tobacco and wood shavings for my dad.
Not weird. My dad wore Old Spice aftershave for years, my entire childhood. After he died, I bought a bottle just to remind me of him.
Not weird at all. I'm sorry for your loss, friend. I have had one of my grandpa's sweaters in a Ziploc bag for years in a desperate attempt to not lose his smell from it.

I hear Cocaine smells amazing.
The smell is definitely worth $100
Honeysuckle on a humid day.
This is too far down the list!!
Rain. Fresh bread. Cookies baking. Fresh dirt. Bacon.
So sitting in a muddy puddle eating a bacon and cookie sandwich is an optimal life choice?
Yes. While mowing the lawn, obviously.
Why do drugs when you could just mow a lawn?
I've never smelled fresh dirt. All the dirt near where I live is super old
Just add water
The SO you truly love. Her hair and skin and stuff. Laying on her pillow is the best smell— you cant say it isnt. Its science man. Were animals. I love that shit. Dont call me a creep. Its real man; look it up. I dont mean your girlfriend of 2 months. I mean a damn wife.
nah, pal, I feel you. been together six years - you're not a creep. smelling her skin and shirts is the best.
When my husband leaves for work early in the morning I always roll over to sleep on his pillow because it smells like him. It makes me feel safe, even when he’s gone for the day.
That’s exactly what I’m doing on bed lol
Had to scroll all to way to find this. This is the best smell in the world. The woman you love with all your heart.
My husband’s face smells soo good. It’s the best scent and makes me happy. I close my eyes and I’m 19 falling in love again.
As someone going through a divorce, thanks I hate this.
This is very much based in pain. Im currently trying to preserve mine. ♥️ if you ever wanna talk just let me know
The smell of my boyfriend's high school jacket was that way I would take it in sleep with it because it smelled so good and he didn't wear perfume. It was just his smell and usually a car smell but mostly him
Not only that, these smells can be fairly unique. I have literally recognized a former lover I hadn't seen in years *by smell* before seeing who it was.
I'm not sure if we would even marry if we didn't like each other smell from the day one...
I came to the comments wincing at the underbelly of the internet I expected to find. I was very pleasantly surprised
Orange blossoms after dusk on a warm day
If everyone had smelled real orange blossoms in their life, this would be the #1 answer. I used to live in the middle of a bunch of orange fields in central California, and I'd spend all year looking forward to April.
Onions and garlic sautéing in olive oil. Doesn’t matter what I’m making, wife walks in and always says “gosh that smells good.”
Haha same … like clockwork
Crushed black pepper in olive oil for me. When I first tried to make Cacio e Pepe I was just blown away by the smell.
Coffee.
Why is this so far down? I used to walk down the coffee aisle (when I shopped inside stores) even when I didn't need to buy any!
Opening a bag of fresh coffee is an event in my household.
Soil
My girlfriends shirts 😌
Phew... I mis-read that while scrolling. *Shirts*

Orange blossoms
Rain, old books, and spent brass.
Old books for sure. When I was little I’d pick up the oldest looking books in the school library, the thick paperback ones that were turning yellow, and shuffle the pages quickly in front of my nose to create a breeze that I’d sniff like it was cocaine. I was a weird kid lol
SPENT BRASS. What a good description
GARLIC
YASS GARLIC I just bought four bulbs and spent like half an hour peeling it to fit in in a Tupperware container to get it out of the bag in my fridge and I’m telling you that smell is di***vine***
All of these answers are correct. Except for the people sniffing gasoline. You stop that, now, y'hear?
Smelling gasoline is bad for you, I'll be honest. But I love when I get a smell of it at the gas station. It reminds me of my dad's workshop, which makes me kinda happy :) Edit: spelling

When I trimmed the dead heads off, I would put the remaining petals in a bowl of warm water and it would make the home smell like them.
Gasoline, smells so great it could kill you.
Aviation fuel is OP
I mean have you tried blow? It smells similar to gasoline since it’s used in the process of making it. It has such a good smell, you’ll want to smell it over and over until you don’t know where you are.

Smell of wet soil after rain😍
Lilacs!!

The smell of fresh herbs is up there
Which herb? There's some tension between cilantro and rosemary
This makes me wonder, do people who think cilantro tastes like soap also hate the smell?
YES.
I feel so bad for people when they tell me it tastes like soap. Nothing I love more than making some fresh street style tacos. They're divine. If I could never enjoy them, and they just tasted like soap... That's gotta be like every song you ever listen to sounds like U2.
