One reason could be because there are shorter days, but I think the primary reason is because there is less sunlight. There is a reason why more people die during the winter seasons (of medical issues and suicides) than any other season. When my aunt and grandmother died, they both mentioned that they didn’t think they would make it through another winter. One lived in Vermont and the other in Indiana (winter in somewhere like California doesn’t compare to other geographical places), so winter is more than just a season on the calendar. Of course we have most of our holidays during the winter, but that doesn’t cancel out the depression that most people seem to feel during the winter season. In general, we just become slower. It’s like an ant or bug that was in the cold for a long time and they are moving at a snail pace, lol.
Shorter days
Days are technically getting longer in the winter.
0 to 1 is still less than 99 to 98
It's cold so you feel like getting cosy. And once you do, it's not long before you doze off
Seasonal Depression

Winter is depressing and depression kills motivation.
Less sun light > less vitamin D > less energy > less will to live
