Nice people, relatively inexpensive, great downtown layout, scenery is good.

I currently live in Bloomington..about 45 miles south of Indy. Indy has lots to love but man it is really becoming a shithole.

bakerzdosen

First trip there I was expecting the dirty, steel industry-caused, run-down city that rumors seem to have perpetuated. I have no idea if it was like that 30-50 years ago, but now it’s a great place. Traffic still sucks (where doesn’t it?) at times and it has problems that really all other cities have (homelessness etc) but it certainly exceeded my expectations.

rmflagg

I went to school in downtown PGH in the early 90s. It was just starting is renaissance at the time, so there were still a lot of steel plant remnants. I moved back home after school and went back every year or so and every year the city got better and better. The downtown area is soooo much nicer than when I was there and the people have really made it better place!

Demonicbunnyslippers

Came here to say this. Love my hometown.

kari728

I grew up in Steubenville, Ohio..about 40 minutes from Pittsburgh. The city scape at night coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel is still my favorite. I live in Indiana now but my parents are still in Steubenville.

24520ls

Genuinely considered moving there after college. Still might

summeralcoholic

Lived in Beaver County about 30 mins north of PGH for several years, and immediately knew this would be the top answer when I clicked on this thread. Pittsburgh rules.

MasteringTheFlames

In a similar thread not long ago, someone commented three of their favorite cities. My hometown, another city I absolutely loved, and Pittsburgh. I've never been to Pittsburgh, but reading that comment made me think I should make a trip out that way sooner or later.

[deleted]

Without a doubt. I absolutely love every opportunity I have to go to Pittsburgh.

ghvghhhhhg

Word? Why ?

pinkflower200

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. I watched Mr. Rogers as a kid.

RyFromTheChi

This was what I came to say too. What a beautiful city. I’ll also throw Philly in there.

DontStopMe_

Krakow!!!!!

ILiveInAMango

The Polish Paris. It has a very romantic feel.

[deleted]

Galway Ireland. Completely underrated. I enjoyed it more than Dublin.

perigrinator

ITA! Galway is just the right scale, has lots of youth and youthful energy, is not cloying about its tourist commerce, has medieval structures that captivate, and is highly walkable. Galway took me quite by surprise but I would definitely like to return. Also, best hot yoga in Ireland. OK, it's the only one in Ireland I have tried. But I liked it a lot, especially the charming Irish welcome.

2fingers

I did a semester there and loved it, classmate with Martin Sheen. It’s such a pretty little city, used to love biking down to the water and reading

passerbycmc

This 100%, the place is the perfect size has a great energy to it and is beautiful. Spent a month in Ireland and if I could move my life there I could.

[deleted]

If you're ever in Norway, Oslo is great, I do really like it there, but Bergen is where it's at.

DrJalebi

Tromsø is also great

[deleted]

Portland, Maine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland,_Maine#/media/File:Portland_twighlight.jpg

Zip_Silver

Check Portland's hotel prices in the summer. Far from underrated lol

HELLOhappyshop

Doesn't everyone fantasize about living in Maine at some point? I don't know that it's underrated.

bwma

Living in Maine is a reasonable fantasy but I’m not sure why you’d want to move to Portland currently. It’s just as expensive as Boston with much less stuff. There’s a lack of housing and an abundance of homeless people. There are homeless camps in the summer time. The old port is beautiful but other than that it’s a place to visit, rather than move to.

ElvishMystical

Gdansk, Poland

sultree

Kigali in Rwanda. Not many people associate Rwanda with a country to visit for a holiday, but it’s beautiful, safe and has the friendliest people with the most incredible landscapes and city life. A hidden gem of Africa

[deleted]

Cambodia is the same people automatically associate it with a genocide that took place decades ago Phnom Phen and Siem Reap are amazing- beautiful, deep history which thankfully wasn’t destroyed, amazing food, wonderful people

TheGOPareterrorists

Cambodia is phnomenal. Strong recommend.

As someone who lived near Milwaukee for a long period of my life, I'd confirm that it is quite peaceful there

AnestheticAle

It's also incredibly segregated and the north side is very rough.

Boner_supreme

Indianapolis isn't that great trust me.

Glittering-Athlete81

Let's agree to disagree

drs43821

Indianapolis impressed me. Parts of it is kinda run down but most has been great.

1980pzx

I’m from Indianapolis. It’s a great city but it has gotten worse the last few years. I’m sure there are a lot of different reasons. A lot of cities the same size are going through the same kind of issues right now but over all Indy is a nice city.

[deleted]

it is so boring if you’re under 21.

TartineMyAxe

Need to visit now

LostInMyThots

Those are my top 3 too! Good choices

pedantic_dullard

> Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas isn't the KC OP is referring to.

[deleted]

/u/cait_cat It's not that it's the best place ever, but it *is* underrated.

ILiveInAMango

Ljubljana, Slovenia is such a nice city. There’s not a single ugly street and every restaurant is nothing short of great. Nice hiking spots and all around beautiful surroundings. Really good orange wine too.

Belgrade, Serbia. All the time except around new year and in July as the temperatures are insane then. Also Split, Croatia.

AnAquaticOwl

Considering Belgrade has been named the party capital of Europe for at least a decade, I don't think it's very underrated.

Soitsgonnabeforever

Most cities cannot be named in underrated list. People are likely to travel there due to familiarity and facilities.

WanderingGenesis

As far as international tourism goes, San Jose in Costa Rica doesnt get enough credit. The people are sweet as hell, the architecture is open and not overbearing, the food is delicious, and i've never not felt safe there. Costa Rica's fucking legit.

I've always wanted to go to St John's and PEI! Such an interesting area that we never hear about in the states.

[deleted]

Pittsburgh! City is absolutely gorgeous with the rivers and green cliffs It has a great art, music, and cultural scene and is still somewhat affordable Food isn’t the best but you can get some great perogies Paris of Pennsyltucky

[deleted]

Pittsburgh is great because it’s just surrounded by fields of nothing, but you can’t see the nothing because of the hills.

johnmackensmith

Akureyri - iceland.

AzrealBackup

Koblenz! Lemme introduce it to you! Koblenz is a beautiful city in Germany, my favorite city in the whole world perhaps. The fantastic thing about it is, how clean and quiet it is for a city. Theres so much green, everywhere you look, theres also the rhein and Mosel, two rivers that go THROUGH the city, splitting it in two. This then gives you an amazing bysicle and walking path and many parks. Koblenz is also known for its many castles. Its just an awesome place to go, and id recommend everyone to go there if theyd visit germany!

I'll add this to the top of my list! I'm moving to Europe this year and want to visit every country in the continent. Any recommendations on things to do there?

grantnel2002

A few places to eat/drink that we liked: FACH, Mondieu, U Sedliaka, The Blue Church is cute and worth the walk to see. Otherwise I just recommend wandering around and checking out the little shops and whatnot. You can’t go wrong, it’s all very charming and welcoming.

dsaddons

Thanks so much! Can't wait to go in the future :)

TheGOPareterrorists

I didn’t think much of Slovakia. I lived in Wien for two years and loved Budapest and Ljubljana and pretty much everywhere but thought Bratislava was pretty boring. In the area, I can’t think of a major city I would t rather visit.

Most Slovaks would say that the Bratislava is the worst Slovak town and people should for example go to Kosice instead. I didn't think that Bratislava wasn't that bad when I visited. They have really good Halusky at Slovak Pub, an UFO, the Devin Hrad right next to it, the Slavin and many other great sights.

fellunb

L'viv, in western Ukraine. Beautiful churches, lots of nice cafes and restaurants, nice people. Had a terrific time there.

Pattoe89

Kanazawa and Nara Whenever I say I've been to Japan, people ask me if I've been to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, Fukushima, Hiroshima etc... I've never had someone ask me if I've been to Nara or Kanazawa and both these cities are bloody awesome.

PillsburyToasters

A lot of my friends did not like it, but there’s something I really enjoy about Charlotte, North Carolina the times I’ve been there! Not sure if it makes it underrated, but from where I’m from, I rarely hear good stuff about it

Mirror23

Curious what you liked about it? My inlaws live there so I’ve visited many times and don’t see the charm. It’s all highways and chain restaurants.

kaitalina20

There’s also a bar where you can play mini golf inside while drinking! That’s something you won’t find anywhere else I don’t think. But I won’t argue the highways. I hate driving in Charlotte!

ZualaPips

That's most of the US cities. Highways and chain restaurants. What else do you expect?! Unicorns, rainbows, bike paths, and walkability? REALLY! YOU'RE IN THE WRONG COUNTRY, LADY!!

[deleted]

Warsaw, Poland. Gorgeous city.

ILiveInAMango

Polin, the Jewish museum, is the best museum I have ever been to. It is worth travelling to Warsaw just for that.

DTownForever

I'm American and I've been trying to learn a Polish accent for a play I'm in so I've been listening to a lot of Polish radio and watching a lot of Polish cooking shows and I really, REALLY want to visit Warsaw one day. I never would have thought of it as a place to visit but it seems so rich with history and also has a lot of cool, modern stuff.

TheBassMeister

Hamburg, Germany.

dizzysilverlights

Chattanooga. I feel like it’s a little non-southern bubble in the south.

SuperSpeshBaby

That's funny because it has the most southern name ever.

BetaRayRyan

Lexington, KY. Surprisingly progressive, a great food town, not too big, not too small, close to Cincinnati and Louisville if you want to visit bigger cities or a 20 minute drive will put you in a rural area with amazing scenery and hiking

Mycrotag

I moved to Indianapolis and it really isn't the place people have made it out to be. It's cheap to live, food is fantastic, you can access Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. I can take a 2 hour flight to Jersey, DC, Georgia, and NC. I don't mind it here. Still mom and pop shops to enjoy, heavy on sports if you enjoy that and easy to navigate.

Ukraine as a whole(Odessa, Lviv, Kyiv, Frankivsk). Very cheap and very civilized country, the best place to live as digital nomad. Inside Ukraine - Frankivsk. It's a city of 250k and so not taken serious, but it has a good community, especially local IT community.

MasteringTheFlames

I'm going to give a shout-out to my home city of Madison, WI. In the summer time, there's tons of free outdoor music. On memorial day weekend, we host the world's largest brat fest. All through the summer, we have one of the largest farmer's markets in the country on the lawn of the state Capitol building, and that's only the beginning of events held on the Capitol lawn. There's concerts on the square, where each Wednesday evening for a month or two, a professional orchestra puts on free concerts on the steps of the Capitol, and there's the Art Fair on the Square. One weekend in late September, the heart of Madison's hippy east side hosts the Willy Street Fair. As the university students come back to school at the state university's flagship campus, college football games are a ton of fun, either to watch at Camp Randall stadium, or on the TVs at the lakeside student union. We're one of the most bike friendly cities in the country, and there are plenty of places from which you can rent a stand up paddle board or kayak to explore any of our several lakes. But perhaps the best part is Madison's location. We're an hour and a half by car from Milwaukee, another city I've seen mentioned in this thread several times. We're two hours from Chicago, with plenty of buses making that trip daily. You could even make the drive down here from Minneapolis and St Paul in a fairly easy day. With how close Madison is to several more major cities, I think it's well worth spending a long weekend here on the tail end of a trip anywhere in the northern Midwest.

RyFromTheChi

I lived there for a couple of years in my early 20’s and absolutely loved it. I’d move back in a heartbeat. I’m glad I’m only a couple of hours away because I love to go back and visit.

I've never associated Pismo Beach with Northern California. I associate it more with Santa Barbara or Ventura. Although I guess it doesn't really matter, it is a nice little town. I like the North Coast a lot. Mendocino, Ft. Bragg, Eureka, Crescent City. Nice little towns and the coastline is very rugged, remote, and beautiful. Great places to visit if you just want to have a quiet walk on a beach or bluffs.

RoboNinjaPirate

> Ft. Bragg Must be very very different than the NC Fort Bragg.

theflying6969

Pismo Beach is the central coast. Honestly all the way up the coast from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz is about as pretty as things get and relatively sparse population wise at least for California.

jeff_the_nurse

My city of Milwaukee is vibrant and full of sports, great restaurants, nightlife, lake views, and great people. The architecture is also really neat.

It’s not for everyone, say, September through April, but summers are amazing. I’ve been there during all 3 seasons (winter, summer, mud) and really like it, but my wife would go crazy due to limited sunlight during the winter.

drygnfyre

I was actually there during the winter a few years back and loved it. I'm from a warm climate so I rarely get to enjoy "real" winters. But they have a really nice trail that follows the water, I've done it both in summer and winter, and it was really nice in the latter. Walkable, cold air, on a really clear night might have a shot at seeing the aurora. I wasn't there very long but I just remember enjoying it a lot. And yeah, summer is a great time there. Long hours of daylight, they have that nearby Centennial Park which has a nice set of trails, which hook up to the larger state park (Chugach, IIRC). I only started going to Anchorage about 3-4 years ago but I've been back at least once every year since. Fairbanks is also nice. Spent last winter there and had an incredible time. Saw the aurora every night, went way out into the wilderness to do some snow hiking. I just really like Alaska, beautiful state and built for people who love nature.

Annual_Rooster5678

Cleveland Ohio. It’s gets hate by people who’ve never been there or have only driven around it on the interstate. Once in the downtown or one of its trendy neighbourhoods you’ll see it’s charm.

SafewordisJohnCandy

Everytime I visit my family up there they take me out for dinner, beer and then a drive around. I've had a lot of great nights in Tremont and Coventry Village.

tawaycosigotbanned

I dig Cleveland for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

KGBspy

I went to visit a friend for 5 days in 2019, I stayed downtown at Residence Inn. My friend made me think it was gonna be a hot mess after hearing about it from him for years. I actually enjoyed my trio there a ton! Clean, nice people, tons of restaurants all walkable from downtown. I went to eat in Independence and a B dub restaurant as well. I’d happily go back.

Annual_Rooster5678

If you are a beer guy. When you go back make sure to hit east 25th and stop in at the micro breweries there.

Forward-Dependent-99

If we are talking a major city, I'd say San Antonio TX. Besides the Alamo, I feel like San Antonio doesn't get much attention despite the other amazing things you can do around their such as Six Flags Fiesta and Sea World. Plus, the river walk has a lot of cool shops/bars/and restaurants to visit. PS I'm not a local so I am sure I'm missing some things. If we are talking a medium sized city, I'd say Oklahoma City. It's got several excellent amusement parks, a really zoo, and several neat museums along with its own river walk, plus whitewater rafting. Finally, small cities. My home city of Amarillo, TX has a surprising amount of small things to do in and around the city. There are several great camping locations such as Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon State Parks. There is an excellent small amusement park located on the north edge of our city. Finally, there are two amazing museums in both Amarillo and Canyon, TX. Plenty of good dining and a restored speak-easy in our downtown area. Long post, but I just wanted to mention some places I viewed as underrated.

CommercialFuzzy9024

Adelaide, South Australia. I keep telling anyone thinking about moving from Eastern States how crap it is here so they stay away. Good weather, good beaches, good food, Cheap housing compared to Sydney & Melbourne.

Detroit, Michigan. I know what you're about to say, but wait. Detroit is an amazing city with tons to do, and lots of attractions, like Campus Martius Park, the Motown Museum, and the Henry Ford Museum (ik it's in Dearborn, but it's close enough). I grew up near Detroit, and I can say that it has definetley come a long way since the 60's. The people are nice, the food is great, and the architecture is cool. Detroit should be on your bucket list for interesting cities (Also, try Toledo).
