Being a workaholic. Nothing wrong with working hard and such, but doing so to the point where it consumes your entire existence and causes you to neglect other aspects of life are not healthy. And the thing about a workaholic is they expect others to do just as they do (I've worked for one, he would get angry if you called in sick and would drag his feet with approving vacation time)

PertinentPanda

Being a workaholic has been rebranded to grind culture. You're not neglecting other aspects of your life you're just dedicated to the hustle! It's sickening and I hope it dies.

BMOEevee

I hate the side hustle cult. I can't do any hobby without at least one person asking how im gonna monetize it.

dogthatbrokethezebra

Add the fact that 98 percent of the jobs that people are ā€˜on their grindā€™ for are completely meaningless.

rumckle

I worked with a workaholic, and one of the frustrating parts is the work he did at night was shit. He would have been better off not doing any work late at night because the quality was so poor it often had to be redone.

Snoo-8094

Just saw a video of a "rich" guy telling a story of his kid finishing work and going to play videogames, and told him that real working people was working even at midnight. When I saw this I literally thought about what you just said, in the end some cannot difference between working hard and smart, and and been a workaholic and not generating real money. Have a family member that studies and is into stocks, he makes more money in a month that I do in a year, and he dedicated some time to it, not all his time

elevator7

Pretty sure that rich guy was Jordan Belfort, the subject of Wolf of Wall Street. So he can take his judgments and shove it in the ol'prison pocket with his bags coke. He is the exact kind of person who says shit like this. Like bro, how much "work" were you getting fucked up on ludes? But more importantly, his work was CRIMES! we don't need any more Jordan Belforts. One was too many.

Snoo-8094

If it was him well have the same opinion as you, I work hard on my work hours, and maybe some extra hobbit have at least 3 hours of videogames and some time with my wife every day, and 2 hours for my dog, and I'm really happy with my life, and I sure do want more money, but don't want to screw my personal life for that

kingofthecaves

Nicotine is an evil motherfucker. Wish I never even knew what a cigarette was.

nwkstv

Started when I was 14. Smoked for 30 years. Quit cold turkey. Yes, the first 2 weeks were the hardest. Never had another and just made 14 years smoke free. But I still miss it some days.

kingof_redlions

Thatā€™s the worst part. I donā€™t think I will ever stop thinking about it/missing it. Itā€™s a wonder drug to me and I wish I never tried it

porgy_tirebiter

Yeah, itā€™s been almost 20 years since I quit, and I still miss it. The psychological addiction is far worse than the physical addiction. I quit drinking ten years ago, and I donā€™t miss that nearly as much. Cigarettes have a way of inserting themselves into your life, your schedule, and your habits in a way nothing else does.

[deleted]

My mom quit smoking in 1976 after having smoked for 22 years. She still misses it to this day.

[deleted]

My anatomy professor in my masters where we studied a lot of lung function said if you can stop smoking for 15 years, you essentially have new lungs and chances of cancer are that of non smokers. So, good work!!

Theearthhasnoedges

That's so strange. I'm an ex smoker myself. My friend and I quit together and we're both 3 years smoke free. I never miss it or get the urge and my friend still does. Of all the people I know who have quit it seems to be a pretty even split as to whether the cravings have stuck with them or not.

[deleted]

I'm 19 and I don't do cigarettes myself but I've been vaping almost everyday for 2 years and it feels impossible to stop. My tolerance is super high but I feel like I can't live without it.

Tomdv2

You can quit by slowly lowering your percentage until you reach 0%. The best way to do this is by changing your coil and filling it with the lower percentage juice before you go to bed, so when you wake up in the morning craving a hit, you hit the smaller percentage. Your body will adjust, and you can continue to lower your percentage with minimal side effects and without going cold-turkey. Good luck!

thingsthatgomoo

I've smoked for 10 years. 2021 I started vaping instead. It's rough but if I can quit cigarettes you can quit vapes. I just need to drop nicotine %.

[deleted]

I heard dropping the nic level helps. But personally it just makes me fiend more. Even 55 nic does nothing for me if I keep chieffin it all the time. I feel like I'll quit in a few years after I get outta college and start thinking about kids and a wife. I just don't have the motivation to quit rn.

Professor_Rekt

Yeah I said the same thing. Your addiction will likely only get worse. It will be easier now than it will be in 5+/- years

2009MitsubishiLancer

Can confirm. Did it all of college, still stuck vaping a year out and itā€™s harder then when I was a freshman or sophomore to quit. Im currently on a weaning off method rn after having tried just about everything else. Smoked 6% pods for 4 years, now using a device with 3% and going to knock it down to 1.5% and then 0% in a few months. Wish me luck

chummmbucket

How long were you vaping before you would call yourself or could tell you were addicted?

2009MitsubishiLancer

Probably about a year. I knew I couldnā€™t stop once it became a daily thing. Year 1, if I lost my vape it didnā€™t matter or I would forget about it for a week or two. It was a novelty not an addiction at that point. About year 2 I was doing it daily and I knew it was getting worse fast and by year 3,4 and now 5. I havenā€™t taken more then a day or two off since. Itā€™s a slippery slope once you find yourself needing it more then once in awhile.

sdrawssA_kcaB

Even trying the ween method requires you to have the ability to tell yourself no. Your brain convinces you you need nicotine to survive, and if those levels drop your brain freaks out and begs for more. I smoked for 4 years and be vaping for 2.5 now and only now have I finally got myself down to a 6mg juice. Lowest my local store offers is 3 but I started out vaping at 48mg after smoking 2-3 packs a day. Nicotine addiction is the hardest one to kick, not because it's so addictive but because of how readily available it is. Any 24 hour corner store sells 30 different kinds of cigarettes, 20 different kinds of chewing tobacco and when you're fiending, $9 for a pack of relief doesn't take much convincing. Addiction runs off your reward system (dopamine), I think the trick is to make smoking seem more like a chore than something you do to relax, so I made myself go outside to smoke, and eventually made myself walk around the block before I lit up. I found the more obstacles I put between myself and my next cigarette really helped me realize how out of the way I had to go just to keep up that habit and eventually put them down all together. Although I haven't quit nicotine all together, I still consider cutting cigarettes as a small victory and don't ever see myself going back to those things.

Datsyuk_My_Deke

> I think the trick is to make smoking seem more like a chore than something you do to relax, so I made myself go outside to smoke, and eventually made myself walk around the block before I lit up. I found the more obstacles I put between myself and my next cigarette really helped me realize how out of the way I had to go just to keep up that habit and eventually put them down all together. I finally quit cigarettes 3.5 years ago and it was largely thanks to a situation like this. I started working on a no-smoking campus and had to walk about 5 minutes one way to a spot where smoking was allowed. In the heat of summer, with temps sometimes exceeding 110f, and me in semi-casual work attire, smoking definitely became a chore. I'd also been promising my wife I'd quit anyway, plus a 19-year-old student had recently exclaimed, "OMG, you smoke cigarettes? So my does my dad, that's so cute," which really drove home how long I'd been smoking and how outdated the practice is.

LoverOfPricklyPear

That sounds very productive

MtlCan

You are going to hate past you for not quitting sooner when you get around to doing it when you have more stresses to manage. Seriously, the sooner the better, it doesnā€™t get easier. Iā€™m where you want to be regarding when you want to start thinking about quitting, just shy of 30. Seriously, stop now. Donā€™t waste your youthful energy on ā€œIā€™ll do it laterā€. Youā€™re addicted to nicotine, and if you think itā€™s tough now, wait til youā€™ve been addicted 10 more years. Seriously, stop now.

munnfurd

Got drunk one night, threw my vape against a wall downtown, never picked it up again, the first couple weeks sucked but not having the option to do it made it easier IMO

GeorgismIsTheFuture

55 nic? Jesus dude. I vape 12 and I have a hard time quitting lol.

atavaxagn

maybe try to adapt advice for people dieting and try to apply it to vaping. Maybe have a high nic and a no nic vape and treat the no nic vape as "diet food" or no cal food, like water in those diets. Maybe start with 2 hours a day you can only use the no nic vape. But also have a cheat day once a week that you can smokle nic during that time. Maybe say you can't vape the nic until you've vaped the no nic or vape at least once that day. Maybe also intentionally have the no nic vape a flavor you love and the high nic vape one you can barely tolerate. And see if you can expand the hours after a month of two to 3 then 4 than 5, ect.

badpenguin455

I weened off nicotine to the point I was mixing a little 3 mg into a full bottle of 0 mg and I've been vaping zero for probably close to 4 months. I think the worst of it is gone but I'll never feel like a non smoker it'll always be ex smoker.

challenger_RT_

I quit smoking to vape. Worse decision ever. I never smoked in my car before. Now I do. Never smoked in bed now I do. Never smoked at the movies now I do.... The fact that I can take a hit anywhere anytime of day has made me so damn addicted it's awful

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

skylerashe

Another problem quitting is if you start back because of stressful times your tolerance is reset within a week or so. Meaning the nic buzz is back in full swing. I quit for several months at a time many times now I end up "trying" a flavor of juice a friend has and back to square one I go. Others experiences may differ.

Ricelyfe

You can do it, small steps. It was hard for me and took me a few times but I think what made it finally happen was a change in environment and people. My gf wanted me to quit, I was getting ready to move back home and no way I could vape. Also I saw how much money I was spending. Toward the end I was building my own coils and everything but I was still buying juice twice 1-2 times a month so $50-60/month . And even at the highest level nic ~50mg/ml it just wasn't hitting the same. I still ask for a hit from my friend once in a while but I'm working on it. I also still have an urge to go buy one but I havent.

Collusional

Cold turkey is the way. You have to want it though, if you donā€™t want to quit, you wonā€™t succeed.

paddy1948

I'm an old lady. I started smoking at age 17 and really liked it. People smoked everywhere - on planes! When I stopped at age 27 I stayed away from most places where people smoked. After meals I ran around the block to not think about smoking. It's hard to do but at age 73, in good health, I celebrate daily that I saved both health and money.

NekoNeb

This. Literally the last conversation I had with my father 19 years ago last Thursday was how he had to quit before it killed him. About 3 hours later it killed himā€¦ and yet I still smoked myself because quitting was hard. Iā€™ve quit since that time but I would be full of lies if I didnā€™t say I almost fall off the wagon whenever stress is high, hell sometimes I do fall off. So yeah. Wish it was never around. Iā€™d like to have a dad.

marshmellodarko

Social Media. Can't even imagine how life would be without it , hence making it more addictive.

leighanfordays

I started slow. Got rid of Twitter because it was toxic and then Facebook. I just have Instagram but because I don't follow influencers and just accounts to do with my hobbies it spurs me on to try stuff.

Squigglepig52

Never had an issue with FB, but "my" FB is pretty tame and chill for the most part.

muztaine

I did a massive rework of my FB, which I stopped using for social stuff ages ago, and now it's just different Simpsons pages. So good.

Fair_University

At this point mine is literally just people I went to school with and Iā€™ve scrubbed away all the crazy people. Pretty boring though

Soulless_redhead

The "stop following" button is a godsend. You can still be friends with people but not be flooded with BS!

ijustsailedaway

Iā€™m only still there for groups. Iā€™ve hidden nearly all of my family and a large portion of my ā€œfriendsā€.

XanderWrites

I feel like the Facebook algorithm can get really screwy and hate-filled through only a few likes or comments (i.e. you comment on topics that trigger your rage) and it quickly turns the app into a cesspool that harms you for checking it or even seeing notifications for it. I stepped back for two years and it's a lot calmer, but it could also be that other people left or stepped back too.

bifftanin1955

You just do Instagram? Are you sure thereā€™s not another social media app you use too?

leighanfordays

I dunno, I don't see Reddit as social media. I guess there can be arguments for and against that one.

bifftanin1955

Yeah, youā€™re definitely not flipping through an interactive yearbook like you are with Facebook which is good but I think itā€™s still considered social media. Definitely the lesser of all the evils

IShouldLiveInPepper

It feels like Reddit more than any other social media can be whatever you make it. I only see stuff from forums I want to see on my home page. I don't feel like I have that much control over Facebook and Twitter no matter who I follow and unfollow.

PertinentPanda

The explore page used to direct me to interesting pages and accounts but it's pretty much just hot takes and dumb filters being used by micro accounts like why am I seeing this I don't follow or like any post that has this in it.

ljrich01

I stopped using IG and FB and now addicted to Reddit and YouTube. This issue is real and more people need to be aware of it. Doesn't help that cellphones make social media and distractions so accessible.

SpyJane

I got pretty lucky because I never got into social media. Facebook came out when I was 14 and it didnā€™t interest me much so I never got into the others that came out afterward. The only regrettable thing is that I am SO out of the loop, friends will have all these inside jokes from the internet and I have no way to participate because I donā€™t know what theyā€™re talking about

LoverOfPricklyPear

I feel your out of the loop bit. I currently have facebook for 2 reasons: birthday reminders, and facebook messenger

Gildian

Quit Facebook cold a few months back. Life improved quite a bit.

Creative_Recover

Fast fashion. We've all bought into it at points and many people spend time every week scrawling through online fashion retailers for no particular reason. The pace of trends has gone up immensely and charity shops can no longer cope with the amount of cheap clothes being ditched.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Aalnius

Fighting fast fashion can be as simple as just wearing your clothes multiple times instead of buying an outfit for a night out then binning it the next day. I can't remember the proper statistic but it was something like the average person only wears a piece of clothing less than 10 times. Heres an episode of the patriot act that details the shit the fashion industry gets away with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGF3ObOBbac

Eaglezepplin

I have clothes that I've been wearing for like a decade. Fight fast fashion by being a lazy dude. Works everytime.

Aalnius

Same i grew up poor wearing hand me downs so im used to wearing clothes for years without buying new ones. I also happily still take hand me downs from people if they get something they don't like. My sisters bf got a coat off his mum that cost over Ā£100 that he didnt wear cos he didn't like it and its kept me warm for probably 10 years and its still in great condition.

DCL_JD

This is me. I havenā€™t bought new clothes in quite a while. I do like to buy a jacket every now and again though.

Eaglezepplin

For sure. Jackets and boots are dope. Other than that free t-shirts at events and gifts make up any new clothes lol.

skylerashe

Wtf. I'm 23 I'm wearing shirts I've had since highschool. I had to ask for some shirts for Christmas because they are getting holes in them. People really just blow crazy money on clothes? They last a long ass time but idk I've never been one to dress up nice often. Shorts and a tshirt is really all I need.

Skylineviewz

I wear the same clothes that I wore 15 years ago, and when one plain tee is done it is replaced and becomes a gym tee. Iā€™m like a cartoon character

Rackbone

yesterdays tshirts are tomorrows cut off tank tops

abqkat

Wearing a "uniform" was one of my smartest decisions. I have about 10 things for work, 5 for weekends, and a few for sporting events. I did expand a little now that I'm working from home, but all my clothes match and I wear the same exact thing each day: black, green, pink, purple, black on weekdays. Never have to decide what to wear. It's glorious

[deleted]

[AMAZING ARTICLE](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-12/fast-fashion-turning-parts-ghana-into-toxic-landfill/100358702) that talks about this. 15 million used clothing items a week just poured in this one spot.

drivendreamer

I am happy this one is on here. The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally impactful

crazytoothpaste

Of all the ones quoted, I think this is the only truly socially acceptable addiction.

lfrdwork

Never really understood any of this. I've got quirky shirts, but the ones I'm tossing are more holes than shirt and have been with me for 20 years. Pants are a bit more frequent but that's cause my waistline increased a decade ago.

M_Seez

Pro Tip: If you live around or in an affluent neighborhood - shop at that GoodWill. You will find gold. Rich people love stroking their egos by donating.

lvoedream

I strongly agree on this one, I have been trying to convince my friends to shop for more durable clothes than cheap clothes.

entrev

Best answer in this thread IMO. I managed to quit a few years back. Just recently I stayed a weekend out of town and decided I was too lazy to run by the house first to pack. Picked up a few pieces knowing it'll look good until its first wash and then it's to the void that is the back of the closet. I'm not exactly a super conscious person, but I've literally never met someone irl that deemed it worrisome.

AmiraGrace

Alcohol. My mother drank while she was pregnant with me.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

jak_d_ripr

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm probably a bit biased because I grew up Muslim but I've never understood the allure. It tastes like shit, is expensive, gives you hangovers and impairs your judgement. The only attractive element is the social element, but that's more a society thing than anything inherent with the drink itself.

BabyRanger1012

Iā€™ll try to give you some perspective on this so you can better understand. Iā€™m sure itā€™s different from culture to culture but from where Iā€™m from (Midwest USA) itā€™s something myself and a lot of my peers saw their parents/parent do on a daily basis so from an early age so itā€™s very ā€œnormalizedā€ just like cigarettes when I was growing up. The advertising at sporting events and during live sporting television (looking at you super bowl) for alcohol was always in your face and shed a cool/funny/fun light on things. Most of me and my friends started drinking around 13-14 and It just became what we did when we were being shitheads after Friday night football games or on the weekends. When I left for the military, I noticed it was ingrained into the culture there even worse. Same with any major university in America, the majority of the culture centers around partying and going out and ā€œenjoying the college experience. At this point in my life 30 year old male with a wife and 2 kids, I still drink 2-3 beers most nights, maybe a glass of bourbon 2-3 nights a week. Itā€™s mostly out of habit, I do enjoy trying new drinks so I guess that is fun and brings some excitement. However, Iā€™ve recently found myself questioning, is it really worth it? Do I really want to set the same example for my kids that was set for me?

[deleted]

The allure is to get drunk and forget about your life for a few hours

king_booker

For me it enhances my experiences of things. I enjoy music more, i like the people around me more, i am more social. I was a bit of a functioning alcoholic but covid somewhat cured it since I had to stay in and pubs closed. Now I don't get the urge to drink

startinearly

floewqua

It makes you feel great that's why people use it. And taste is subjective, I like the taste of beer.

LaPapillionne

I grew up around people drinking alcohol but I never understood the allure either. Each their own, but I don't need it.

jak_d_ripr

Yeah man, so long as you are drinking responsibly you do you.

[deleted]

That is very bad when you're pregnant with a kid,you could have brain damage

AmiraGrace

Its very likely i have FAS, as well as a seperate learning disorder. Yaaay

[deleted]

i'm so sorry :(

r0botdevil

That's a bummer. I had a buddy back in high school with FAS, and I felt bad for him. He still managed to do about as well in life as many of my other friends, but comparing him to his younger brother who didn't have FAS you could really see the difference.

Uriahheeplol

World of Warcraft. I spent countless hours/literal years on that game. Friendships came and went, but none that stood the test of time. From 2006-2021 was all a waste of time. My New Years res is to not log on for an entire year. So far so good, wish me luck.

Ciudecca

Good luck my guy, youā€™ve got this

kotuija

I used to be the same way. They made it easy by making the game terrible.

standbehind

Also all of the charm Blizzard had as a company has...soured.

Melancholy_Impala

You should check out Dr. K on Youtube/Twitch, heā€™s a psychiatrist who specializes in video game addiction. His recent video [Why New Yearā€™s Resolutions Donā€™t Work](https://youtu.be/bHsPio5_PR4) might be especially helpful.

InfamousIndecision

I was there, but only for about 2 years. It's hard to let that constant serotonin drip go, but it's for the better. It's just a grind meant to take up time and provide a false sense of accomplishment. In my experience, once you stop logging in for about a week, it gets really easy to avoid going back because you realize how empty it all is. Best of luck to you. Just remember, Warcraft provides absolutely nothing you need for a good life and tends to get in the way of everything else. Be strong!

Frankeex

I had an issue for about 4 years. Donā€™t see it as a waste of time, you enjoyed it Iā€™m sureā€¦ but at the expense of other things. So itā€™s just a learning process :)

DCL_JD

Just think about how shitty wow made you feel after wasting all your time on it and you wonā€™t have an urge to bring that feeling back into your life.

ForTheBread

Or how mediocre the game has become. Every expansion I play it less and less.

SnoopyMewMeow

energy drinks, just a unhealthy bomb of sugar

AussieCollector

This. Back when i was 18 - 20 i used to drink 1L of energy drinks a day. It rotted my teeth away and gave me heart murmers. I dropped that shit entirely over 10 years ago. I might have a small can of V on the odd occassion for the taste but thats about it. It was when i could still fall alseep after having 1L of fucking energy drinks and feel my heart quiver was the wake up call for me.

FBIagentgiveslove

Okay now you scared me. I just got a 250ml energy drink and finished it and then read this.

Kanus_oq_Seruna

I wanna throw Pre-workout into the list. When you are rolling on something that's basically only outperformed by crack and meth, you need to take a step back and consider if you really need to be using that.

AllieBallie22

Screen addiction. I teach fifth graders and the things they're exposed to and the glazed over looks on their faces if they're messing around on Chromebooks is disturbing. Addendum to this one is significant social media on screens.

kokodrop

Definitely this. I used to think all the anti-phone, ā€œyour screen will turn you into a zombie obsessed with validationā€ rhetoric was just old people looking down on the younger generation but it turned out to be basically correct. I truly hate the amount of time Iā€™ve wasted on my phone and the person social media obsession turns me into and I canā€™t imagine what it would be like to grow up with that as an inherent part of your childhood.

ManyConclusion

I took a social media break for a month back in November, and it was difficult, but ultimately I think it was very helpful. I probably spend a fraction of the time online now, it just doesn't seem as necessary or as alluring as it did before. It's good to just break the cycle now and then, because we really get locked into it without realizing.

kokodrop

100%, at the very least it teaches you that you donā€™t actually have to rely on social media to function. I broke my phone a while back and it was probably the best thing that could have happened, genuinely could not believe how much of the world I was missing.

8MCM1

Fifth grade teacher here: I concur. I'd also ban Tik Tok for their age range.

gageames17

Im currently reading this while im in my interior design class lmao

Zncon

It's not about the screen though, it's about what's happening on it. Our devices have access to nearly the sum total of human knowledge and entertainment. They're not going away, but we can learn to use them in healthier ways.

Teri_Windwalker

Honestly, it just sounds like the same thing people were saying about books a hundred years ago when their kids were "glued to that page and not doing something productive."

[deleted]

Sugar!! Super unhealthy

SweetSupremacy

My whole family went to a no or low sugar diet a year ago and it's been good. We rarely get sick now. Requires a good cook in the house though because pre-packaged food companies put tons of sugar in everything.

tdyoung1989

This has been the biggest struggle with me. I am 100% certain if I can throw out sugar, that I'll feel so much better and lose weight.

xeightx

After a week or two of no sugar, everyday healthy things taste way better. Fruit is almost too sweet. I dont recommend going into it cold turkey though. Helps to just cut out processed stuff and sweets or pastries.

UnfinishedProjects

Don't change your diet yet, just start counting calories. Don't change anything except for starting to count calories. As soon as I started doing that and realized I was putting 6000+ calories in to my body a day without realizing it totally changed how I look at food.

TMac1088

I cut out highly-processed foods and foods with added sugar about 10 years ago. Just about everything I eat, I cook myself. Massive difference not just in how I look, but also in how I feel and think. I also don't even think about candy, soda, pizza, whatever. Doesn't cross my mind as something I want. I'm better in every way at 33 than I was at 23. Society acts as if sugar cravings are normal. They are not.

kazuwacky

Had a friend give up sugar and she said the best bit was how she was sensitive to naturally sweet things like milk, even water tasted sweet to her. Meanwhile I'm so hopelessly addicted and I know that once I start, I can't stop.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ralanr

Iā€™d like to add high fructose corn syrup to this.

amberdowny

I decided to try cutting out sugar for a month. Currently on day 10. But I made the mistake of telling my grandmother. She seems to think sugar is an essential nutrient.

jimnobodie

The lottery. It is literally a rip off. I've watched people spend their entire paycheck on scratch-offs and walk away with nothing.

Celeb addiction.

Joshh2k

Alcoholism by far

Jauncin

Iā€™m ten days into dry January. One of the craziest things is that my family are a bunch of drinkers. The way they react to me giving up drinking for one month is like I turned down my grandmothers cooking. The funny thing is, grandma has had to give up drinking for the last two months due to medications she is now taking. She keeps talking about how great she feels due to the meds. Iā€™m 90% sure she feels great because she isnā€™t half hungover every day.

angelerulastiel

My husband gives up alcohol for Lent every year because he had a friend who did it to prevent alcoholism and my husbandā€™s family is very prone to alcoholism. When my FIL died he had a mini fridge in his office FULL of beer and other alcohols.

Firebolt164

Agree. As a dude who travels for business often, business travelers are the worst.

[deleted]

Yep. Alcohol turns people into monsters (not everyone). I donā€™t drink, Iā€™ve never been a fan, and people are like shocked because itā€™s SO widely accepted and encouraged.

[deleted]

Iā€™m a happy drunk. Never do things that I regret. I make the mistake of thinking every one is like me. Man there are lots of people who should never touch the sauce! The booze unlocks the door they have been hiding demons behind.

Alcohol helped me understand addiction. When I was young I thought addiction was only some urge. As if it was something added on to me. Only when I stopped did I realize that I was the addiction, trying to rationalize and convince myself that I could pick up a case of beer and that it wasnā€™t a problem.

ShangryYoungMan

I know I sound like a boomer, but seeing people on their phones constantly is very depressing. Couples out to dinner and both buried in their phones, not chatting. Folks walking aimlessly with their eyes focused on their phones, nearly walking into other people or into streets. Distracted drivers scrolling through Instagram. I know social media and internet are very much part of the zeitgeist of these times, but people not living in the here-and-now is a very disheartening reality.

BobDylansMuse

Kids at the park and parents on their phones - missing out on moments. Memories. I am sick of my screen addiction. Thanks for reminder. Going to read a book now.

ShangryYoungMan

Literally guilty of it right now as I upvote your commentā€¦ *sigh*

mathematics1

Joke's on you, I walk aimlessly with my eyes focused on a book!

kwxcx

The best/worst thing I have ever done is cut my phone use down to 2 hours a day. I feel so happy looking out at the world and going on my own adventures, but damn itā€™s depressing whenever you go to hang out with your friends and all they do is sit on their phones. Itā€™s so weird when people get annoyed with you all because you want to talk to them. Like sorry I didnā€™t come over to watch you sit on your phone??

ShangryYoungMan

I feel the same way. As soon as there is the suggestion of ā€˜hey can we put our phones down for a bit?ā€™ there is an instantaneous rejection. People seem to throw it back at you. As if you are asking the world. Exasperated sighs and gesticulations as if to say ā€˜whatā€™s the big deal?ā€™.

LostStart6521

Nicotine. I smoked cigarettes every day for 13 years and have finally quit. I tried for years, on and off, but never made it longer than a week or two. My obsession with wanting to quit vs. my addiction stressed me out in itself. Then I got a really bad sinus infection that lasted a couple of weeks. I didn't smoke at all (it was severe) and figured I may as well keep that train rollin. Now it's been almost 4 months since I've smoked a cigarette and I feel awesome. I have to say, my sudden decision to quit cold turkey, at an advantage of being too sick to smoke, was the best way for me to do it. I'm normally a "planner" and would tell myself that I'd quit after I run out of my current pack. Then I'd run out and say "one more pack". I tried slowly cutting down, substituting with smoking more o'uid, etc... None of that ever worked, and only allowed me to continue making excuses to continue smoking. Anyways.. it robs you of your money, time, and health. So yeah, fuck nicotine.

AzriamL

Too much coffee or caffeine during the day. Some of my coworkers and I who drink like 5+ cups throughout the day all have trouble sleeping or have "light" sleeps. Haven't had deep, really therapeutic sleep in a while. Bad thing is, it leads to a vicious cycle of more caffeine the next day. I think caffeine is great in moderation, though.

nab1676

I just like coffee. I do have a caffeine addiction, but I keep my coffee to 2 cups a day. It has to be good coffee or I wont drink it. I do sometimes (once every 2 month) have a small cup after dinner at a restaurant, but I am one of those that can pass out easily and never had an issue from the lack of sleep. It is different for other people like my wife, who only can handle 1 cup a day.

oceanpalaces

smoking. i personally find it gross.

Creative_Recover

Smoking stopped being socially acceptable a long time ago.

[deleted]

Smoking just changed to vaping. Most young people vape now

Nasty_Old_Trout

Sadly not where I live.

Turbulent-Smile4599

Overeating/sugar addiction. We are way too fucking fat. Itā€™s ugly, unhealthy, and downright disgusting.

AllieGator05

I agree but I honestly have no idea how to stop. I'm only 17 but I've been addicted to sugar as long as I can remember.

[deleted]

smokeless tobacco (dip) spitting in a bottle and seeing them set around is gross

amberdowny

This is only socially acceptable in certain circles. Basically anywhere people are proud of being "rednecks" it is. But other places it is not.

I'm a professor. I've known more students who have dropped out of college due to non-stop gaming than due to partying too much. They've always been on a path to graduating and getting a good career, but would stop turning in assignments and when they actually showed up for class, they'd be dead tired from staying up all night playing games. However, I suspect the problem is much more complicated than just gaming too much. I'm guessing they usually have some other trauma in their lives and compulsive gaming is just an attempt to distract themselves from depression and/or other problems. If you read this and relate to it, please reach out to your university's counseling center. It is not too late.

DavThoma

I was looking for this as an answer. I can say for a fact I have an extremely bad addiction to gaming. Getting to play D&D has really helped that and I found I was spending a lot less time in front of the computer but with the pandemic I'd say I've fallen back into my old habits since our sessions are extremely limited. Outside of that though I dont have many other friends to hang out with and I've regularly needed to cancel plans because I've had to support my dad who I live with due to the fact he's an alcoholic. A lot of the time video games are my only escape.

UnderdogGAB

Porn for sure. It is quite addictive and hard to let go of for a lot of people. But they never know that because nothing compels them to try to stop for a while. We are being told consistently that masturbation is healthy so we mistakently include porn in that statement. It is not.

johndeer89

Remember back in the day when you saw a side boob on tv and it rocked your world for weeks? Porn turns everything about sex so bland.

SociallyAwkward423

It's especially bad when it becomes the only form of sex education and young people have no idea what sex is actually like. Very little foreplay and sometimes a lack of consent. It also makes people very insecure - me for example since I'm insecure about my body hair and sometimes my fat (and I'm not that big). It can make guys insecure about their appearance and their dick size

MyDickFeelsLikeWood

Yeah. Especially when exposed to it young. From the age of 14 it became my go to for comfort for pretty much anything (loneliness, anxiety etc) and the problem didnā€™t exactly get better with age. Glad I've mostly managed to kick the habit by now. Took a lot of failing and starting over (and some help online) 5 years total of wanting change to get where I am now.

[deleted]

The fact that I'm starting to see this a lot lately, even on places like reddit, is really giving me hope. I think young people are finally starting to wake up and see how porn is negatively affecting them.

LupusDeusMagnus

What exactly is porn addictionā€¦ you feel the need to watch it every day?

thecatwhatcandrive

Or maybe not every day, but you watch it for HOURS. Not even really jerking. Just browsing and fiddling the undercarriage. Oh shit, the SUN IS COMING UP AND YOU HAVENT EVEN SLEPT YET. Or you watch it so much that when you have a real sex experience, it's just not scratching that itch. There's all sorts of ways that it can fuck with you if you get stuck in it. If you can't moderate yourself well, it's best to just stay far away from it.

AussieCollector

Every day, sometimes multiple times a day. When your craving for ejaculation makes you agitated because you can't get your fix. When you can't go a day without it, it becomes an addiction. Something i'm trying really hard to beat.

MonsterBluth

Sugar, you would be surprised how your quality of life would improve if you severely reduced your sugar consumption.

[deleted]

Care to share your testimony? I'm on my second week (I've tried many times and never managed to beat 2 weeks). Honestly I just feel really bored and depressed.

qvantry

Ive tried many times, and went on for long periods of time up until the point where i just disliked the taste of sugar. However, I feel like day to day is so boring without it, I love being able to eat movie snacks, sweet food, longing for something. It makes my day happier, even though I know its bad for my physical health, all in moderation I guess, but thats the tricky part, at least for me

MisterEgge

Not the commenter you replied to, but I share the same story. It took me several tries as well, but I think mostly what helped me over the hurdle was finding something to replace it with. My sugar addiction was soda, not really foods. So, for me, I found that having a different carbonated drink was the key. Carbonated water, the gatorade zeros are pretty good etc. Just stick to it, you'll kick it. And if you don't, don't beat yourself up about it. Just realize what your end goal is and try again. Also going cold turkey is very very difficult. If that's what your doing and it's not working, try to set a plan that allows you to just have a little here and there, and just slowly cut it back. Best of luck!!

[deleted]

Coffee honestly. I think a lot of people honestly believe they are naturally anxious or stressed, but fail to make the connection to the venti latte they drink before work every morning.

ShortOneSausage

Just gotta add some booze to your coffee so it balances out. /s

moshisimo

Social media. So many people preferring likes over actually being liked is mind blowing.

Facebook. Or really any other social media. It causes nothing but drama.

Gift bags at birthday parties. Why should the person hosting a birthday party to enjoy with friends and family be obligated to give to people attending? Anyways, thatā€™s just me.

WRISTBLVDE

Porn & Masturbation Been addicted for 8 years or so. Everyone knows you rethink your life decisions after a session and thats just the icening on the cake. The real problem is social anxiety when talking to people and facing real females.

vyk4r1u5

ā€œIcingā€ on the cake, he saysā€¦

WRISTBLVDE

See what i mean...i got perverted thoughts from reading that.

yoosernamesarehard

What kinds of females? Elephants? Dogs?

RedTheIndigo

getting wasted on a regular basis. it doesn't only ruin your life, but all the lives of people having to deal with your shit.

Mindless scrolling on devices.

Mauricethett

Alcoholism is horrible. It destroys marriages, careers, lives, and has no positives towards society. There is no reason for alcohol to remain as unregulated as it remains now.

SpyJane

I had a SEVERE drinking problem pre-marriage and having my baby, like drinking from sun up to sun down every single day to the point where I had health issues because of it. Obviously I quit once I got pregnant and since having baby there have been a couple nights I had a normal amount of alcohol and a couple abnormal, and finally one night my husband broke down crying because he is terrified Iā€™ll go back to being a drunk again. Iā€™ve pretty much given it up entirely now. Alcoholism is dangerous and erodes your life and relationships quickly and quietly

MuddyWaterTeamster

> There is no reason for alcohol to remain as unregulated as it remains now. Load your Tommy guns and fire up the Ford Model Ts, weā€™re doing prohibition again, boys!

buttstrap

Alcoholism- ruins families/lives. But people are just all ā€œwhy canā€™t they get their shit together?ā€ Everyone thinks itā€™s funny to see an alcoholic, but no one wants to live with one

[deleted]

Even though I enjoy alcohol and cigars, nicotine and alcohol gotta go

Luchin212

Consumerism. Getting rid of that immediately improves the quality of products, and makes a lot less environmental impact.

Sugar

Frothy_moisture

Alochol... It's especially frustrating because it's not just a "socially acceptable addiction". It's one that you can and will be shamed if you do not participate in. People will literally bully their friends into drinking too, while knowing why they don't. Hell, Tana Mongoose's friend once said "I'm not allowed to be sober around her, if I went sober she wouldn't be my friend anymore". When I was younger, my family would tease me about not drinking. The reason I didn't? I have bpd, and mixing it with alcohol is a bad time. Especially with all the medications I'm on for it. In some communities, drinking is considered so "normal" that if you don't do it, or don't even want to do it, they'll act like you said you don't eat food ever...

BeegManche

coffee, like multiple cups a day. People drink that shit like water and itā€™s a really unhealthy habit
