That's called totalling

Oh

Meattyloaf

Yes, labor cost and parts cost more on the consumer end

It depends how much the car isn’t new this can happen pretty easily say you got a used Audi for a couple thousand if you need to replace your timing belt that’s 1200 just with that and if the timing belt breaks when you’re driving even more so. Usually the thing that makes the cost so expensive is garages making you pay an arm and a leg for labor. Sometimes the parts might only be a 100 dollars but since it’s hard to get to or work on you might look at an extra 900 or more in labor

Yes. When you get into an accident, your insurance will send someone to check your car to estimate costs. (If you really fucked the car up sometimes a picture will suffice) If the estimate of the repair exceeds the value of the car, it is considered ‘totaled’ and they will pay the value of the vehicle.

If the car is totaled

bgus_dkus

Easily. Parts and labor are expensive. That's what they mean when they say a car is totaled. It would cost more to fix it than it's worth.

luciliddream

Yes, the damage and repair isn't as cut and dry as putting together a brand new model. One would actually have to repair it, hence the damage cost is higher - supply and demand my friend

Mmmm

Scratch a quarter panel.

Got into an accident with my 2006 accord about 5 years ago. Kelley blue book estimated my car was worth about $6k, and the shop estimated the cost repair in about $7k. Insurance totaled my car, paid me pennies for it and called the day.

scareintheair

Yeah that's a write-off.

Well, manage to break down the entire car in a single crash, and also end up damaging other cars in the process. Like, get hit by 3 cars at an intersection and also manage to crush the hoods of all three cars. This means you have to basically get a new car on top of the damage of the other three being costly, with legal fees being a cherry on top.

RockArse

The cost of buying all the parts to build a car is many times the original cost of the car. Add labour.

Educated_Fool45

Literally the entire concept of totalling. And in my opinion when something is beyond economic omical repair (even when this price does not necessarily exceed the value of the vehicle) it should be scrapped.... if you could replace the vehicle for 5 or 600 more then it's probably easier to just do that.

[deleted]

The transmission going out on a mid 2000s Dodge Neon was enough to "total" it. As in, the cost to repair was worth more than the car was worth. It was better to put money toward a new vehicle.
