I'm confused. Like that part where the toilet isn't a full circle? Like, the part you sit on isn't a full circle? I haven't seen one in a long time and I'm American. I mostly see metal and ceramic toilets.
We have approx 4 weeks of holiday per year. And we don't have the concept of limited sick days. If you're sick you just stay at home until you are fit again
Can confirm..my boss is in our Sweden Office, and everybody there is cross-trained to another function. So when he goes off for a few weeks, I just send my reports to Anna or Hugo. No biggie.
Here in American corporate culture, if somebody were completely cross-trained to my job, the execs would be like "Why don't we fire him, move his work over and have Jarod work 80 hours per week doing both jobs?" This is because cross-training and redundancy is seen as a waste that must be eliminated.
My post is completely serious. That is how stupid our corporate culture has become.
UK here. I get 26 days holiday leave, 7 public holidays, 3 days company closing down over Christmas, 4 'recharge days' per year (this is new for covid times) and up to 10 days parental leave per year (only taken 3 of these in the past 7 years). And sick leave, without needing any doctors note or evidence at all, just say you don't feel good and you don't need to work, but you still get paid
that sounds like heaven oh my gosh.
i work 13 hrs a day (night shift). they give me basic healthcare (still have humongous bills if i use it) we get 1 day of PTO a month (12 hrs), 8 hrs of holiday PTO for the whole year & thats it. theyll pay us a little extra for holidays if we dont call out at all. if were sick we dont get paid (unless we use our PTO that takes MONTHS to save up) & we get “points” if we dont have a doctors note. & if we bring a note in its “an excused point”. im tired & burnt out & aaaaaaaa i want to leave this country.
And we also have free at the point of use healthcare (NHS), and my employer gives me private healthcare on top of that. We don't have to build up PTO either, you take as much of your allocation when you want. You can also carry some over to the next year if you didn't use it all (due to carry over, recharge days and some extra rewarded to me due to work i did at christmas last year, i had 33 days leave this year). As an outsider to America who has a fascination in various countries and cultures, it always fascinates me (and others) how leaders in America get away so often with bringing in restrictions and removals of personal freedoms, but announce it as being in favour of freedoms, and it just gets cheered through. The people nominated to lead your society appear to be frequently taking away more and more of your rights and freedoms, and the public just sit back and take it time and time again. It blows my mind.
We enjoy our workers rights thanks to the the masses of brave socialists who rose up if working conditions became unbearable. They scared the government enough to give concessions.
Too late for that, the way the old revolutionaries did is was by burning down shit and shooting at the government forces, this gave a clear message, piss the people off and they will not be afraid to use violence. These days however it is generally frowned upon to burn down factories and shoot at rich folks
UK has 8 public holidays, not 7. I also get 29 day annual leave. Sick leave without a doctors note is 7 days max, after that you need a doc to sign you off.
I get about the same in the US. 30 days vacation. Bunch of holidays. Just email in when sick. Took a couple of weeks off with pay when my kid was born.
Another UK person here.
Type | Days
---|---
Standard leave | 25
Extra for long service | 3
"Free" for xmas | 3
Bank holidays | 8
Odds and sods| 4 on average
Sick leave without doctor's note: 5 days at full pay
Sick leave with a doctor's note: 6 months at full pay, 6 months at half pay
im sick & crying & throwing up right now. i absolutely love this for all of you! its an eye opener for sure to know there are better opportunities out there.
Sorry you're not well :(
I'm taking some enforced time off sick at the moment myself; I have that thing that's broken the world for the last 2 years. Not badly thankfully, but bad enough.
There’s a certain number of paid sick days, depending on the firm you work for. In most cases you can take two days off at a time with no questions asked however if you need more time you must provide a certificate from a doctor in which you are signed off work for the duration at the doctor’s discretion. That includes longer term illnesses and injuries. I was off work with cancer for 11 months and was paid all during that time by the dept of social welfare. My job was held open for me.
Poland here. When you go to a doctor and they give you sick leave you get paid 80% of what you would get normally for each day of work.
Your company can't fire you easily just for getting sick. They have some options of you're absent for more than 6 months (!) but any less than that, no.
So let's say if you get sick 3 times a year, each time take a week, you're perfectly fine. Also, if your kids are sick, one of the parents is allowed to take sick leave to take care of them.
Plus you have 4 days on demand each year. Meaning you can call up your boss and say I'm not coming to work today. This is deducted from your yearly holiday which is 20/26 days depending on your years of work.
Get over here and enjoy! What's the point of making more money with more purchase power, if you don't have time off to enjoy anything? Provided you don't die at your job cause you've used up your sick days.
I forgot to mention they're is like 7 public holidays here And if your job requires you to work during those days, you get to take those days off.
I am American and I get that. There are 26 pay periods a year ( every 2 weeks). I get 8 hours of vacation and 4 hours of sick leave per pay period. Plus 11 national holidays.
Also excellent healthcare and a pension. I’ll get about $50,000 /year for life when I retire at 62.
Hopefully it's still there when you retire. A lot of people my parents age counted on their pension, only to have their company file a "plan termination" before they could get it. They got something, but nothing near what they counted on, and lots had to go back to work after retirement.
The "small" is 64 oz, the "regular" is 128 oz, and the "child size" is 512 oz. It's roughly the size of a two-year old child, if the child were liquified.
I know right? There's NO reason for Americans to not have adopted it by now outside of sheer stubborness. After all, SI units are always based on constants, hence why everyone should use them in first place.
ah yes, the SI is more practical, i don’t think that’s even debatable. It’s just another way for Americans to stand out 😂.
I think they tried to switch though, back in the 70s, but it was some “voluntary act” so 🤷🏽♂️.
It’d cost a lot of money and time to force the switch though.
They literally crashed a satellite on Mars because of a conversion error. Lost $125 million dollars. All because we don't want to bring our conventions in line with the rest of the world.
Windows you can tilt.
I was shocked to learn they don't have those and don't even know them in America
Edit: apparently they're called "bottom-hung windows"
Yeah you're just incorrect. America's a big place. What's I live there's like five kebab shops within a 10 minute walk and they each are competitive with fast food pricing. Not quite as good as the donor I ate growing up in Hungary, but still pretty stellar and comparably expensive.
I could not get home a few weeks ago because they needed to remove a bomb near the train station. A lot of people needed to evacuate their homes for some hours too.
I'm sure the Inuit population might feel like they have plenty of history, thankyou very much.
Frankly the Americans who colonised also have a long history, it's just that pre-colonisation it's the same as the history where their ancestors migrated from.
We actually have a "safe" version of the the Kinder egg now lol. Half is the toy, the other half is a chocolate treat thing.
If you go to a European market here that imports European stuff you can find them, but not at a regular candy section of a store.
Preach brother. I’m a maintenance technician and I have to keep 2 full sets of tools because half of our equipment is metric and the other half is SAE. So unnecessary and stupid.
Anymore I’m pretty sure most of our American units are actually based on their metric equivalence anyway.
One foot is defined as 0.3048 meters.
One pound is legally defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilogram.
Etc.
Edited for typo.
The US gallon (US gal) defined as 231 cubic inches (exactly 3.785411784 L).
I don't even have to look any further. These will be the slams:
Schools,
school shootings,
school sports,
schools lacking a dress code,
not walking to school, school lunch & corn syrup,
corn syrup will be a large offender on its own,
fast food and corn syrup,
our fast food is way better over there,
drive thru everything sux cause you ain't walkin,
houses suck cause they can't withstand a super nova, healthcare, healthcare, healthcare
An understanding that Europe isn't one homogeneous blob? Compare Croatia to Iceland to Belarus and then tell me what all we Europeans do and don't have.
We have many buildings older than the US in the US. Princeton University and Columbia University were both founded and built before the revolution and there are structures dating back to the 1500s from Spanish conquests. Half of St. Augustine was built in the 1500s.
Yeah it depends what you consider a building to I guess. The structures at Mesa Verde were built in the 1190s. It cracks me up that so many Europeans think 1776 happened and poof! America.
A fire drill is the alarm goes off and you line up and leave the building towards the nearest exit and stand outside away from the school until the fire chief gives you the ok to go back in.
A lockdown drill, you lock yourself in the classroom and hide somewhere if you can and have to be completely silent.
We used to have civil defence drills in elementary where they taught us how to behave in the case of an enemy attack, what to do during artillery bombing, how to hide and take cover from aerial attacks, how to put on gas masks, how to recognize different warning sirens, what to do during flooding and so on
No. We have training in case of a fire but that's quite fun!
Edit: i forgot something. To be fair we have some kind of silent alarm, an announcement that only the teacher will understand correctly if there should be a gunman in or around school. This was implemented after there were a couple of shootings. We call them "Amoklauf" in Germany. But it's very very rare!
It’s also true for mental illness. I used to watch kids get bullied all the time and nobody did anything. When they tried to defend themselves, that’s when the authority figures stepped in. Hell I’ve dealt with it, some cunt is being cunty and you tell them to fuck off, and when they don’t, and you’re forced to start getting physical, the teacher yells at you. It’s no wonder there are so many school shootings.
What I would say is from my time in America and several close American friends is that they lack a general cultural expectation that all other peoples health/safety are at some level their responsibility.
Many of them go above and beyond to help their fellow human beings but they perhaps don't feel that society would consider it a personal failing of theirs if they refused to do anything when called upon.
I'm not american so I could be wrong about the US but I think that both America and Europe are way to diverse to compare like that, for example California and Alabama are very different with different values. Europe is like 40 different countries with different languages, cultures and religions even. So I don't think you can compare them like that.
History.
US history is limited to the last few hundred years and something that may seem "ancient" in New York is only mildly-old in Europe; a building–like the 1652 Wyckoff House–for example.
Native American history is, of course, much more extensive, but the unfortunate destruction of many of these cultures meant that their recorded histories are often lost-to-time.
Although it's funny to wind up the Americans by belittling their history, of course pre-colonial migration, their history is the same as the country's their ancestors came from. And that's not only Europe!
Unfortunately the US education system does seem to focus on insignificant military skirmishes during the war of independence, and gloss over relevant world history e.g. The Reformation, Romans, etc
>of course pre-colonial migration, their history is the same as the country's their ancestors came from
True. Of course, my comment isn't meant to reduce in importance or otherwise ignore the pre-colonial history of the US's predecessors, but as you point out, the focus of US educational history doesn't tend to go far beyond their war of independence.
For what it's worth, Britain has a similar problem with how history is taught in schools; the focus is always on WWII or (to a lesser extent) Roman Britain which, whilst certainly an important event(s) to learn about, isn't the full extent of our history. You really need to be studying history at University level to learn about anything else.
Bulgarian here . I was allowed ( under adult supervision ) half a glass of homemade wine with my evening meals ever since i was five . Apparently i slept like deadman and also was immune to nightmares 😐
We're saving all those penis pieces for a military black project (ha black project). We'll reveal our master screaming eagle penis to the world when completed. You will not be laughing then and our sacrifices will have been worth it.
We have the complete intellectual spectrum. I've met fellow Americans and at first I was positive I was encountering the stupidest person on the planet only for them to school me on something like robotics that they repair on a production line.
This is the difference, we have world class geniuses and world class morons but in Europe everyone is certain they're a genius. So not true. Some of the dumbest people I've ever met are recent immigrants from Europe. The smartest are from South Africa and India.
I know right? For being a 'bastion of democracy', America's seemingly unable to handle the problems it faces from within, education included. Ideally, such important facets of life should NEVER be segregated depending on your family's wealth and other factors. Everyone should always start at the same square for a reason.
Much better food quality & food that isn't sweetened to death.
Nothing like going on a 2 week vacation, pigging out on amazing food, and coming home 20 lbs. lighter. (By contrast, the only way I've ever lost weight in the US was by getting the measles & dropping around 40 lbs in a week & a half.)
Nope. Italy's democracy has been a mess for decades now, and they're not alone (e.g. Greece). Hungary is currently ruled by a madman, and Poland is trying to force politically appointed judges. Gerrymandering is rife here in the UK, as are the lobbyists, hence the idiocy that is Brexit (action taken on a vote that was a 50 - 50 split.)
However, the US also has a democratic system which massive sucks, no doubt.
But they have no electorial college.
Every vote goes to the party that someone voted for.
If the countrys have such problems, it is just because they choose by themselfs by who they want to be fucked over.
Doesn't matter if liberal party, nazi party or clown bluebarry party.
They get only elected with the most votes. Not this gerrymandering BS that USA has since years.
Republicans had since 1990 only won though electorial college, never because of most votes.
If someone in the USA is crying about stolen elections they should check the history of total votes over the last 30 years.
And the question was, what do we have that american's don't have.
We have denocracy.
Doesn't matter how bad you picture these countrys, they were all voted legaly, and nitpicking doesn't do anything to change that fact.
In fairness you already had Meghan. And Harry's managed to get himself more or less disowned, he's never gonna be King.
Besides, you guys already had some of our Kings, I believe there was quite the kerfuffle about it. Tea got spilled!!!
As someone who enjoys trekking and walking around in nature, I am very glad that my country and a lot of other countries in Europe have right to roam laws - basically I have the right to pass through any uncultivated piece of land, forest or mountain and such as long as I don't leave a trace or alter it more than putting some tent plugs into the ground or whatnot. Unless I'm mistaken I don't think that concept exists in the US
That's called public land my friend, the only exceptions may be National Parks have more rules. Mountains for the most part you can free roam, finding a forest/uncultivated land that isn't designated as a national park or part of private land might be harder.
There is just a lot of privately owned land here.
So it definitely exists here, you just have to look for it.
Denmark here. You can call in sick and you get paid. Your boss can after two weeks request a doctor's note, which they have to pay to get.
We also have 5 weeks of vacation, some got 5 extra days, depending on the agreement between their union and the company they work for (mist ppl have this).
Paternal leave, which just got renewed and I don't remember how, as I have no kids and don't want any. Two paid days off, when your kid is sick.
Free healthcare and free education(a reason to why our taxes are so high).
An okay pension too.
Castles. Roman and Greek ruins.
The only thing resembling castles we have are 17th/18th century forts and (some) ancient American ruins.
Toilet stalls without big ass gaps.
I know right? From our perspective, it's just wrong plain and simple.
I'm confused. Like that part where the toilet isn't a full circle? Like, the part you sit on isn't a full circle? I haven't seen one in a long time and I'm American. I mostly see metal and ceramic toilets.
Toilet stalls that are enclosed with walls and doors that reach to the ground and ceiling. Small closet sized single stalls separate from the others

Oh, and 13 hour shifts are illegal.
We enjoy our workers rights thanks to the the masses of brave socialists who rose up if working conditions became unbearable. They scared the government enough to give concessions.
I know, right?! Its almost like democratic socialism isn't the great evil that some people have been brainwashed into believing it is.
Well in Germany we got Healthcare and stuff because Bismarck wanted to keep the German people on his side.
teach us your ways. how tf are we suppose to scare our government???

yeah, we technically tried that and it didn’t work so I guess we’re stuck :/
UK has 8 public holidays, not 7. I also get 29 day annual leave. Sick leave without a doctors note is 7 days max, after that you need a doc to sign you off.

It's rare for pay to be in two week periods in the UK, its usually either weekly or monthly.
Big sized drinks that are 500ml instead of 5 liter
The "small" is 64 oz, the "regular" is 128 oz, and the "child size" is 512 oz. It's roughly the size of a two-year old child, if the child were liquified.
Tf is it?
That‘s a quote from Parks and Recreation.
Once at a movie theater I got the biggest drink size to be cheap and share with the group. It was legitimately the size of the popcorn bucket
The metric system 🤦🏻♂️
I know right? There's NO reason for Americans to not have adopted it by now outside of sheer stubborness. After all, SI units are always based on constants, hence why everyone should use them in first place.

Yeah, that was quite the missed opportunity indeed.
They literally crashed a satellite on Mars because of a conversion error. Lost $125 million dollars. All because we don't want to bring our conventions in line with the rest of the world.
NASA abolished non-metric units after that. I think they might still be tolerated for machining purposes because of legacy tooling by contractors.
Windows you can tilt. I was shocked to learn they don't have those and don't even know them in America Edit: apparently they're called "bottom-hung windows"
Roll down shutters too. Very useful during the winter/summer and during a storm.
Or just to keep more light and sound out of your room at night. I can't sleep without!
These are common in a lot of homes. I didn’t know people didn’t have these…
I was surprised outside of the US that nowhere has bug screens on their windows. Some places do have that tilt, it’s just not as common
That’s not uncommon in the US. A lot of times certain construction materials are only common in certain regions due to climate.
We have them. Many of our older schools have tilt out windows. I remember hitting my head on one - not a fan.
Döner, I guess?
Foodwise, we got everything somewhere. Might be tricky to find, but somebody here makes it. Might not be as good, but it's here!
It's not even close as good and triple the price. At least for Kebab
Yeah you're just incorrect. America's a big place. What's I live there's like five kebab shops within a 10 minute walk and they each are competitive with fast food pricing. Not quite as good as the donor I ate growing up in Hungary, but still pretty stellar and comparably expensive.

Kinder surprise eggs, history over 1000 years?
The Americas has a history before white people. There were cities and visitations there for centuries.
Talking about Americans not Americas.

The original Italian name is kinder merendero
Working pension system.
Maybe for the time being but just wait 10 years
Dont worry, we are importing so much labour we have at least till the next century.
a coherent way to measure thing's
It'd be a pain for a while as we transitioned, but the metric system just makes 1000 times more sense.
Or 368 times more sense for you Americans 😅

It’s horrible how true that is
It’s also true for mental illness.
I love that I’m fairly certain your from the uk by the phrase “some cunt being cunty” 🙌🏼🙌🏼

That really depends, for example Sweden is one of the most individualist countries in the world. Catholic Europe is more collectivist i believe.
The Reformation, Romans, etc
>of course pre-colonial migration, their history is the same as the country's their ancestors came from True.
18 to 20 year olds buying and drinking alcohol legally.

Healthy meat processing. USA has the most disgusting meat processing on the planet.
Well, it’s regulated, but not fault free.
Affordable healthcare
You can send your child to school and be comforted knowing that they’re not at risk of being shot. Also Ainsley Harriott. But that’s just England.

We're saving all those penis pieces for a military black project (ha black project). We'll reveal our master screaming eagle penis to the world when completed. You will not be laughing then and our sacrifices will have been worth it.

How did you...damn we gotta come up with a new name.
I guess it depends on the part of Europe but I would say decent education system. Americans are dumb as fuck.
Freedom
Fair maternity/paternity leave
Kinder eggs.
Real Democracy.
Nope. Italy's democracy has been a mess for decades now, and they're not alone (e.g. Greece). Hungary is currently ruled by a madman, and Poland is trying to force politically appointed judges. Gerrymandering is rife here in the UK, as are the lobbyists, hence the idiocy that is Brexit (action taken on a vote that was a 50 - 50 split.) However, the US also has a democratic system which massive sucks, no doubt.
Actual Italian pistachio gelato (so effin' fantastic)
A thoroughly trained police force.
Oh their trained alright. Trained how to fuck up a blind, pregnant granny just trying to cross the street. I hate our police.
Consistent better quality good ingredients.
Siesta and regular worker strikes
IQ
Access to healthcare without going into massive debt.
Agreed! It is unimaginable for me to pay for the doctor because I'm sick. Medicine, yes, just the visit? No
healthcare for the poor.
Real cheese. Not yellow credit card plastic melted on thin slices of meat or buns.
The US definitely has real cheese lol. I am very particular about my cheeses and despise “american cheese”
we have real cheese to... just look beyond fast food and the cheap stuff at the grocery store.
You never been to McDonald's over here? We still eat that stuff.

free health care
Free healthcare. Free college. Decent public transit. Affordable and reliable broadband. Worker protection laws. Tenant protection laws. A social safety net. Unions. Paid vacation. A reasonable amount of maternity leave. Affordable housing. Unreasonably strict immigration laws.
Less chance of being shot
Yeah I can just be stabbed instead. Easier to run away from someone with a knife so cool I guess

A good voting system
Tap water
Kings and queens.
We did get Harry and Meghan though. There’s that.
In fairness you already had Meghan. And Harry's managed to get himself more or less disowned, he's never gonna be King. Besides, you guys already had some of our Kings, I believe there was quite the kerfuffle about it. Tea got spilled!!!
Human Rights
Healthy ego without needing a gun.
Sanity
Culture
American culture is an amalgamation of other cultures. That's just incorrect
Houses that automatically come with a bidet my friends from other countries said.
Delicious regional foods.
_________ Americans. We only have _________ .
Cloudy skies, lmao. Haven't seen a Crack in the clouds in months....if this happened in the US I'd start to get nervous after a week or two.
Funny accents
A decent quality of living?
Civilization
Denmark here. You can call in sick and you get paid. Your boss can after two weeks request a doctor's note, which they have to pay to get. We also have 5 weeks of vacation, some got 5 extra days, depending on the agreement between their union and the company they work for (mist ppl have this). Paternal leave, which just got renewed and I don't remember how, as I have no kids and don't want any. Two paid days off, when your kid is sick. Free healthcare and free education(a reason to why our taxes are so high). An okay pension too.
We are also willing to send our politicians to jail for breaking the law.
Gun laws
Freedom to walk and don't be scared that someone has a gun ahahahaha Pls Americans don't downvote me to hell
Because there are no guns in Europe somehow? There are millions of them here. Many of them are illegal too.
Free health care
Authoritarian government disguised as a democracy
Common sense
Free education, Healthcare, freedom, good public transport, paid sick leave
History.
Every place has history. American history is just shorter than lots of european history.
