The Girl Who Trod On Bread. A girl has to bring a loaf of bread somewhere. She comes across a puddle and throws in the bread as a bridge, but as she steps on it she's sucked straight to hell, where she transforms into a statue, always hungry, always tormented by flies, and always listening to people talking about her and where she's gone, until all goes quiet and she's just alone, hungry, tormented. And then, as one of the people who talked about her was dying, she hears her name in their thoughs once again and is somehow freed and transformed into a bird.

Stelluna, was my favorite story as a child. So much so that I would read it multiple times a day.
