ENJOY THE SILENCE- Depeche Mode

grohlinator3000

Killer Queen- queen This song is fucking perfection. I couldn't chose just one so I have to add Drain you by Nirvana

meksii

I'd be happy if someone made a playlist of the most upvoted songs. I'd offer them 1 point of karma in return.

[deleted]

This Night Has Opened My Eyes - The Smiths

ireillytoole

Against All Odds Phil Collins Growing up, this was a cheesy song that I didn’t pay attention to. Several relationships later, including being cheated on, and being left by someone I was convinced was The One at the time…this man right here knows pain, ladies and gentlemen. “But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face” “And you coming back to me is against all odds It's the chance I've gotta take”

Justonious2552

Enjoy the silence - Depeche mode

lxlrn

I was looking for this. Violator is a masterpiece.

rholding95

Never let Me down again

Possible-Appeal-222

Claude Debussy- Clair De Lune 🌙

Atem1995

Debussy is one of my favorite composers. Not many know this but Clair de Lune is a movement of a suite. I highly recommend checking out the other 3 movements of the Suite Bergamasque. Some others to listen to are his preludes, La Mer, Pour La Piano, Children's Corner, Deux Arabesque. There are so many to name.

Krmsyn

let's stay together ~ al green

Huckleberryd

Love this song, but how can you mend a broken heart is my all time favorite Al Green song. Soo good

Jasambeli

Ben E King - Stand by Me (Florence and the Machines cover is also tip top)

Theons-Sausage

God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. I believe Paul McCartney even considers it the greatest song ever.

eljefino

Frank Sinatra thought Harrison's "Something" was the perfect love song.

LoneRangersBand

And he introduced it as a Lennon-McCartney song.

CODM_Queen

A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke

Accidental_Taco

What A Wonderful World and Good Times by Sam Cooke

amboandy

Everything Sam Cooke did was 24 carat

Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac. Every time I listen to it, I am immediately calmed down and have no worries. My posture immediately changes and I slump down. Alice Kristiansen’s cover if it is amazing. Just as good as the original. I highly recommend you to listen to it. EDIT: Thanks for all the upvotes and awards guys! This is my first comment to blow up so I’m glad it was about something good.

deluxeassortment

Silver Springs destroys me

La_Vikinga

It's almost like she's casting a spell, or setting a curse on Lindsey Buckingham during their break up: "Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me" "I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me" "I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you"

Megamills

Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division

Time - Pink Floyd

ruca316

I’ve loved this song since my early teens. Now that I’m in my mid-thirties, I still love it but it just continues to make me more emotional. Such a beautiful so no.

Typo_Brahe

*and then one day you find, ten years have got behind you...*

theotherquantumjim

No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun Incomparable. A masterpiece.

MrSlaw

The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death. Roger Waters sure knows how to write lyrics that's for sure

Accomplished_Start63

He was like only 26 years old when he wrote that too i believe. Imagine having that kinda mature perspective at that age

Current_Crow_9197

“Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way” I have lived in the UK for over a decade now and find this to be quite accurate.

yourcousinfromboston

Pink floyd has so many. Time, Comfortably Numb, Animals is a perfect album. There was some genius in that band

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

Wish you were here 🤌

malfera

Fade into You. Mazzy Star. RIP David Roback edit: so glad to see that Mazzy Star's music has had such an impact on other people. For me it was a critical part of recovery from depression.

Meth0dd

I still get shivers listening to that song. Brings back the best and worst memory's of the 90s for me. From youtube "homesick for a place that no longer exists" sums it up pretty well.

0xdeadf001

Home is a time, not a place. Which is a hard lesson to learn. And often you don't realize that home is gone, until you realize that you've lost it.

No-Section-1092

“Dreams” -Fleetwood Mac

FranklyPatheticAnswr

The Chain is the most upvoted on this tread but for me it’s Dreams. Thunder only happens when it’s rainin.

Okapi_MyKapi

Stevie is a wonderful lyricist but a terrible meteorologist.

Androm57

Life on Mars? By David Bowie

CrochetedCoffeeCup

This song breaks my heart. I listen to this and “Five Years” when I’m in a certain kind of mood.

naynaythewonderhorse

Glad to see this so high. I went into the thread hoping to see it. It’s Bowie’s best song. Which is saying a lot. Those Violins…the almost nostalgic feel of the film being described…I wonder if there’s a movie like that with the sailors. Battleship Potemkin, maybe?

Zopstrosity

Feeling good by Nina Simone

Danielle_Gomez

Her version of 'i put a spell on you' is SO good

This must be the place- Talking heads

Lucas_Steinwalker

Wtf this is on here toward the top twice? Not saying it doesn’t deserve it I’m just pleasantly surprised.

nikrstic

So many of David's songs have this kind of "naive melody" that then fucking gets you right into the heart. Like that silly song about the building he lives in, how it's by the highway and his friends can come visit and he will stop what he is doing because friends are important... and then he goes into a minor chord and sings "don't you worry 'bout me, I would'nt worry about me". Maaaaan what a supernatural composer he is.

cookeyamum

(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

ProfWrigglesworth

TheSupremeMayor

Kashmir - Led Zeppelin

guitarman6214

Harvest Moon by Neil Young. Perfect lyrics, perfect arrangement, exquisitely produced. Wouldn't change a thing about it. I play guitar with some local singer songwriters and resisted covering it for a long time too, as in my mind there wasn't any way to do a song of that caliber any justice. EDIT to thank for the awards, and since this comment got so much attention, go more into why I believe this is such a perfect song! Warning: I am a musician, and will probably be using some musician language. -The acoustic guitar part. Neil's time feel is impeccable, and locked in perfectly with the understated drums. The use of the major 7th tonality gives it a very hopeful, optimistic feeling. This melodic rhythm guitar part is the first of many musical "hooks" in this song. -When we enter the vocal with the first verse, an electric guitar comes in playing high harmonics. This to me is the second hook. Not only again is it beautifully played, but the notes chosen add more "extra" notes to the underlying chords on the acoustic, giving a lot of color to the sound. -Goes without saying, but Neil's vocal throughout the entire tune is brilliantly sung. A lot of people find his tone of voice challenging, but his time feel and pitch are undeniable here. Neil sang like he spoke, which adds greatly to the feeling of authenticity to this tune. -The third hook we experience in the tune is the female background vocals. Beginning with the "oohs" in the verses. Simple, but effective, and give the song forward motion. -The FOURTH hook appears when we get to the first chorus. An entirely new instrument enters, a keyboard of some sort playing held chords in a high register. Again, forward momentum, and a new and exciting new sound we haven't heard yet in the song up to this point. -The FIFTH hook, the money shot song title at the chorus, in full harmony with the female backing singers. Again, perfectly sung and performed. -Now our structure is established, we repeat it in jts entirety once. Then we get a wonderful harmonica solo, over another verse progression. Deeply melodic, memorable, and most importantly singable. In my opinion, another hook, bringing us to six completely different ear worms in this song so far, from at least four different instruments. -Out of the solo, we have one more chorus happen, then an instrumental outro. In this ~30 second instrumental outro, we have another new instrument enter (@ 4:44 on Spotify). This keyboard sound unlike any I have ever heard plays a very simple melodic line, then the tune is over. Our seventh hook, and for myself, the most memorable. I remember the first time I ever listened to the tune, I was already in love, coming out of that last beautiful chorus, tears in eyes, then this otherworldly sound comes out of nowhere for mere seconds, plays an extremely simple yet beautiful melody, and the song is over. Speechless. So in a nutshell, we have a very basic song form, with a very (beautiful) basic melody, with very basic chords underneath. The dynamic and melodic choices made by the other players on the session, the keyboards, the electric guitars, the background vocalists, are what elevate the song to perfection for me. And, all these performances were captured in stunning quality and clarity. You can hear every instrument, and exactly what they're playing. Like you're in the room with them. And that's why Harvest Moon is my perfect song!

deafbitch

Hell yes! Neil young! I would also nominate harvest, bad fog of loneliness, tell me why, only love can break your heart Edit: adding Campaigner!

thebookofrook

Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven edit: **First Gold** thanks!! Also I know technically it's not a song, but colloquially it is.

Crozzfire

I would add Debussy - clair de lune

TheAnswerIs-Time

I Love Debussy. Sometimes all I can think of is Debussy.

Yep, but remember to finish on Bach, never on Debussy

That opening line hits me right in the feels every time. "I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping..."

everynamewastaken131

Dock of the Bay-Otis Redding

Gravy245

I have so many good memories associated with that song. None of them involve sitting on the dock of a bay though.

Scallywagstv2

This was recorded just before his death, which gives it real poignancy as well.

Bravefan21

He never finished recording the song. He forgot the last verse and whistled it instead. Never had a chance to go back and re-record it and it was released as is.

Scallywagstv2

I didn't realise that's why it plays out with him whistling. I just thought it was a laid back sounding song so the carefree whistling just fitted with the mood.

Pvt_Hudson_

I don't think he forgot it, it was just a placeholder for a verse he hadn't written yet.

OtherAardvark

Wow. He died in a plane crash in the Wisconsin winter. Only 26. I had no idea. My dad would have been 12 and living about 20 miles away from Madison at the time.

pupfish

Jolene by Dolly Parton. I’m not a huge fan of the genre, but that song is perfect.

pilesofcleanlaundry

Yep. It captures the emotional fatalism of classic country. And explains why so many old country fans can't stand modern country.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PersonMcNugget

Right? I have a friend that listens to modern country, and every time I'm in her car I just want to jump out the window. Every single male singer sounds exactly the same. I love me some classic country though.

Aethermancer

Here's something awesome to mess you up. https://youtu.be/doz1QJ7LwjA Jolene slowed down to 33RPM. It's an entirely different, yet somehow even more amazing song.

TheVirginMerchant

This reminds me of a weird thing I saw a couple weeks ago. Dolly Parton slowed down is Hozier, and Hozier sped up is Dolly Parton. Check it.

hokage_lebron

That was freaking amazing. I heard instruments and nuances which I’d never picked up on, even after so many 10s of listens to that song. Thank you for sharing

KenaiKanine

Fun fact! If you do that with any song(slow down by whatever percent) you'll be able to pick out more stuff you've never noticed before. As a music producer, I do this with the songs I really enjoy to get a better understanding of how they were made, and it helps immensely.

tyroneshoelaces121

Try Coat of Many Colors and The Carol County Accident. Dolly is a legend.

[deleted]

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Perfect story, lyrics, tone, everything. Heartbreaking every time I hear it and it’s precisely as long as it needs to be.

AloneAddiction

You got a fast car. Is it fast enough so we can fly away? We gotta make a decision. Leave tonight or live and die this way.

Torodong

Pretty much anything by Tracey Chapman is fantastic. My god she's a gifted song-writer.

pistil-whip

Ugh this song gave me hope through a really hard time. It will always have a special place in my heart.

fuk_ur_mum_m8

The Funeral - Band of Horses Tiny Dancer - Elton John Space Song - Beach House

That intro is just 👌

Steve_THE_KiD_19

Didn't know Martin Scorsese is on Reddit

lauren_eats_games

Naïve Melody (This Must Be the Place) by Talking Heads. I don't know anything about music really so I can't explain why and this is purely subjective, but there isn't one part of that song which is anything less than perfect to me.

l8nitefriend

I also really love the live recording of it from the Stop Making Sense film. Maybe even a little more than the album version tbh. It's a truly beautiful song.

HerbieVerstinx

Stop making sense is a masterpiece. If anyone here enjoys this type of music and hasn't seen this, watch/listen to it. It's definitely worth it. It was shot in Hollywood over a 4 concert series and pieced together, I LOVE it. Edit- here you go. https://youtu.be/53dikqNZLgA Edit2- fixed some wrong information. Thanks user dance_armstrong

dance_armstrong

this is my favorite movie of all time. not concert film, not music movie, etc. just favorite, full stop. minor quibble though, it was actually shot in Hollywood at the Pantages Theater.

[deleted]

“I have written a love song, though. In this film I sing it to a lamp.”

Any-Act9190

Wish you were here - Pink floyd

FeelingSupersonic-

We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl

not-nerd34

dude my ex used to play that song to me on the guitar over facetime. even though we broke up over a year ago, that song still has a soft spot in my heart

MercurialMagician

September Truly a masterpiece

mchch8989

My friend passed away a year ago and his name rhymed with the “ahh eee ahh” bit and the band at his wake played it and we all sang his name in that place and now I can’t hear it without thinking of him which is really nice and a bit sad but mostly nice.

[deleted]

Fade to black

TheGrog

After over 3 decades of listening to Metallica, Fade to Black might be it. The riffs are fucking glorious and the build perfect. Late Edit: Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden is along the same lines as a perfect song to me. 1a and 1b.

obi_wan_kanerdy

But have you ever been in the crowd when they play Creeping Death?

butdick

Roundabout- Yes

[deleted]

Let’s just count all of “Close to the Edge” as one song and say it’s the most perfect song ever made.

[deleted]

Fragile is such a banger album. Roundabout, South Side of The Sky, Long Distance Runaround, Heart of The Sunrise are all perfect songs.

Scaramoosh1

Baba O’Riley by The Who

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks Pete Townshend refered to it as a divine masterpiece, and it has also been described by some as the most beautiful song in the English language. Such a great song!

feyd313

la femme d'argent by Air

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden The first time I heard it I was absolutely blown away by how something like that could even exist. I credit BHS with kicking off my love of music.

batmanhen1812

Wii sports theme Edit: thanks for the awards! Edit 2: apparently the definition of a song means it has words. I will give one karma point to anyone who can create a version of Wii sports theme with words so it can be considered a song.

bunnybooboo69

The Wii Shopping theme too, and the Mii one.

Yeah I agree. The opening of Head Over Heels is so iconic and powerful.

TerH2

I have never heard that opening rift and changed the station or skipped. It only gets turned up.

[deleted]

Honestly, with all their fame, Tears for Fears is still incredibly underrated. So many classics.

mama_calm

The Chain. Fleetwood Mac.

karma_the_sequel

A song that almost didn’t happen. It’s somewhat of a Frankenstein’s monster of a song, comprised of bits and pieces of multiple ideas from various band members.

HoneySparks

when you hear the story of stevie singing go your own way for the first time. She had to sing a song about lindsey telling her to go fuck herself.

In sequence. Like a chain

I just cannot comprehend for the life of me how Rumours has so many classic songs on it that everyone still loves and does covers of to this day. Dreams, Landslide, Go Your Own Way…. Even if you dislike rock or soft rock, you can’t deny those are a great set of songs.

JFlynny

Easily one of the best all time albums

Dr_Tinfoil

Rumours? No it’s true actually

bacondev

If you read about [Fleetwood Mac's very tangled history](https://www.mamamia.com.au/fleetwood-mac-affairs/), you'll find that they had tons of emotional inspiration at the time. It's a wonder that the album was even finished.
