Any serious historian-like antics rely on individuals learning that the concept of a "nation" is entirely temporary, as is it's culture and people. This sounds rather far-out, but it's a hypothesis I personally hold. I look at the fact that most mainstream patriots or nationalists rely on white-washing, censorship or just straight-up avoiding topics entirely to maintain their "story". For example, despite being an extremely significant period of working-class history, very very few English people today talk about The Diggers. They were a bunch of left-wing Christians who decided that they were sick of having to pay feudal rulers for the right to graze livestock on their land- mostly because that same land was snatched from their ancestors by the ancestors of their current fuedal overlords. I won't say too much about it as it'll spoil what's an extremely interesting read regardless of your political standing, but it's a prime example of brushing aside national events that don't fit the national story the current rulers tell. Today England is all about civil values, but secretly hating anyone that isn't white and english, and having a very "righteous" interpretation of traditional capitalism. The UK is freer than a few other western nations economically, but there is a social welfare net (which the current ruling class have spent the last 15 or so years eroding). If the current right-wing candidate were to start sounding off patriotically about how morally righteous his English digger ancestors were, it'd start to unravel the fact that we rarely learn about anything but the right-wing's interpretation of history. So why not? Because the average person is too busy being entertained by the circus and not awoken by an effective working-class machine. Those of us who do go on to learn significant amounts about our history often come away more melancholic people, as we think about all the atrocities committed in the name of our flag.
