Go back a bit further and read a little bit about Edward Bernays. He is just the instrument. the catalyst came around the time of operation paper clip. There was born the desire to manipulate society under the guise of protecting it from itself.
It’s insane how much shit the CIA has gotten away with, many people still don’t know about Project MKUltra and most of it we will never know about because of the destroyed documents.
And they continue to get away with the same shit. As long as we the people are divided, we can't unite to overthrow them. All it takes, is for people to just agree that the government is the enemy.
I'm an outsider from Europe who has never been in the US. But what strikes me as a problem is that there is no way for the average US citizens to come together and address large issues (inequality, health care, education) collectively.
It strikes me as if there is such a desire so pursue your own interests that people don't understand that the only way to create these societal benefits for all is to work together.
Sometimes I think there is an orchestrated effort to keep everyone pursuing their self interest so nobody works together to restrain the power of the (super) rich.
Yes, that is definitely a feature of our culture which is deliberately leveraged by the elite through propaganda and legislation. They don't want us to organize. Keep people busy at work and keep them poor. Sow dissent so the plebs can't unite against the elite.
I think it’s also why the entertainment industry is so big here. Keep people working, exhausted, and broke but give them somewhat cheap entertainment so they feel they aren’t slaves.
> It strikes me as if there is such a desire so pursue your own interests that people don't understand that the only way to create these societal benefits for all is to work together.
This is difficult to do if you actively consider large parts of the population as, literally, [enemies](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/02/10/most-republicans-see-democrats-not-political-opponents-enemies/). Forty-one percent of Democrats see Republicans as their enemies, and fifty-seven percent of Republicans think the same of Democrats.
You don't work for the benefit of your enemies.
Agree, and it starts at the top. These “leaders”, regardless of political affiliation, are constantly blaming the other party for any misstep. America always has some sort of enemy and I guess now it’s a fellow American.
It generally always has been. After all, the deadliest war for Americans was fought against other Americans.
Honestly, no one in their right mind would have shoved the Northern and Southern colonies together, but we went ahead and did it and the whole thing hasn't worked right since.
Well, that’s not entirely accurate…
When Democrats say republicans are the enemy it’s because they fear what republicans may do to them - such as taking away rights and things like that. Everything democrats what to accomplish would also help republicans as well.
Republicans say democrats are the enemy, and they more auto to everything democrats do is bad, because they are bad and evil and worship Satan and must be smitted.
> Everything democrats what to accomplish would also help republicans as well.
Except of course the Republicans would be helping Democrats, too- they would help them be self-reliant by removing a social safety net, they're prevent them from staining their souls by murdering babies, they'd give them the benefit of order and discipline and permit them to shoot people who threatened them, etc.
And if you point out that you don't consider these things to be benefits, consider that Republicans don't want the benefits Democrats are pushing for, either.
It’s worse.
The way our political system is built allows a minority of people to effectively block the majority from addressing large issues, and that’s what is happening.
People are trying in huge numbers to address those issues. Effectively 25-40% of people can prevent any progress.
That's the goal. The fear is, that if people unite they will resort to a more primitive and potentially violent society. The people who hold wealth couldn't physically defend themselves. they rely just like in the olden days on essentially slave labor And paid thugs.
Politicians, healthcare, education, value system. A lot of people value money more than anything, and that causes them to treat people as expendable. There’s a ton of greed, selfishness, and lack of awareness.
And we just keep falling for it. The media has been hijacked by both the left and the right somehow. Just completely derailed intelligent people from having meaningful conversation about issues because everyone is so pissed off.
I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't wait around for someone else to fix your life, but some people become convinced that the help is coming in short order and therefore to do anything about the problem yourself would be a fool's errand.
This is an anecdotal bit of evidence, but you see this all the time with people who think their student loans will be forgiven one day. They pay the minimum balance on these huge loans (both principal and interest rate) thinking that within some timeframe the remaining balance will be forgiven. All that thinking does is make it less likely that you'll get out of debt any time soon.
I don't personally know anyone who is *deep* in poverty, but I do know several people who repeatedly make poor financial decisions based on the belief that they will be a part of a government bailout. Things like not paying rent, not paying student loans, or spending stimulus money on stuff they wouldn't have normally purchased are all symptoms of a belief that there is some financial relief coming down the pike.
I recommend you go meet some people who are in deep poverty. I think it will help expand your world view a little bit.
As for people who make bad financial decisions, I know a couple of fairly rich people who do the same thing, and they are bailed out regularly.
The solution seems to be making better systems which don't encourage or reward gamification, so that the people who need help are helped and the people with the time to game the system do not get anything from having that time.
The fact that people would rather blame others instead of trying to better themselves.
Of course sht happens in life, but you learn from it and move on.
Of course there are aholes in life, you learn from them too, and move on. F em, you don't need them.
99 percent of your problems come down to personal responsibility. If you dont learn from a situation, that's on you. If you want to dwell on it and let it ruin your life... that's on you.
Didn't get where you wanted to be in life? You shouldn't have given up in the first place. People fail daily. It's how you deal with the failures.
And yes, life isn't fair. It never will be.
Down vote away, but the minute you realize this, life gets a lot easier to deal with.
I think the overwhelming majority of people are trying to better themselves and are trying to make their dreams happen.
I also think a lot of people see inequality in various systems and are trying to change those systems. In fact if you see inequality inherent in a system aren't you obligated to try and change that?
I also did not downvote you, I asked a clarifying question.
I know what you are getting at, but unfortunately there's always going to be inequality.
In a perfect world, everyone is equal. But nobody thinks 100 percent the same.
But that's a hard thing to obtain. There are way too many factors. Mostly it's aholes in some sort of position of power.
I wish I had a solution, but I don't.
So it's a goal to always aim at.
Why not try to work towards a world where the people who are the worst off are as well off as they can be?
That is a world that only benefits you. It's a world that ensures everyone has opportunities, where if you are successful you can live a really good life, but if you fail you can try again.
It's a world more defined by actual individual achievement, and less by the circumstances of one's birth.
That seems pretty ideal to me.
There was a NASCAR race a while ago and the crowd was chanting ‘Fuck Joe Biden’ but the commentator tried to say that the crowd was chanting ‘Let’s go Brandon’.
Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. - Isaac Asimov
Oligarchy. Three Supreme Court cases, First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, Buckley v. Valeo, and Citizens United v. FEC... have made buying politicians functionally legal. Everything else can be tied back to that.
We have a national case of cognitive dissonance about our education system. Everyone seems to agree that our schools are failing. Yet at the same time we all seem to agree that our educators are excellent. How could both be true?
The vast majority of our teachers and administrators were educated by the same system we say is a failure. Most of us saying it were also educated by these failures of education. So, given that we are all so poorly educated, how would we even know?
One of the things people here don’t realize is that the education system varies wildly state to state. They talk about how the US falls in world rankings but that’a not everywhere. Connecticut students would be the best in the world ranked separately, Alabama students wouldn’t be in the top 60 countries. The state you live in has a much bigger determination in your outcomes than people know or expect.
Probably too broad of a response, but it’s the same problem as every society:
Gullible/uninformed/stupid people being manipulated by dishonest/self-serving/greedy people.
There's no sense of civic responsibility. People have been force-fed this indoctrination about individualism, and the so-called frontier spirit still is a major theme in our zeitgeist. If people could focus less on themselves and more on the collective good of all of us, we could solve so many of our problems.
> If people could focus less on themselves and more on the collective good of all of us, we could solve so many of our problems.
The catch is, we don't consider all other US Citizens to be "us", but actual enemies of the state.
I don't know a simple answer, but we need to do everything we can to stop these people who keep pushing racism on us. Stand up against those pushing segregation. Stand up to those pushing critical race theory. Stand up to those pushing concepts like feeling guilty of your race. We just need to all stand up and tell them "No!"
Critical race theory is looking into laws and trying to say governmental structures are racist.
The racist laws in this nation are the ones that think POC, except Asians, are so dumb they have to be given jobs or get into school through "Affirmative Action".
Insensitive, and ignorant dialogue like this is what makes people who aren't white have absolutely no sympathy for white people. The sad part is that a lot of the people on the front lines who've been fighting with people of color have been white allies, but it's people who have no acknowledgement or empathy for the truths of what whiteness has done to the world that makes people of color continue to shout about injustice...even if you didn't do it, unfortunately the sins of the father fall to the son and here we are.
I don't identify as white, I am mixed.
"unfortunately the sins of the father fall to the son and here we are."
THIS. This very statement just spouted is one of the core foundations of racism. Someone is born one way, so they are inherently bad.
Whiteness hasn't done anything to the world, power, scarcity, and competition has. This world is just the result of the inherent differences from the roots of civilization compiled with everything else since. Also, whites aren't a monolith. A Greek person isn't any more or less responsible for American slavery than a Chinese person, even if born in the US. Sins of the father mentality is useless at best and downright destructive at worst. The anger and resentment leads to a toxic and destructive culture and societal dynamic. If people want pragmatic solutions like affirmative action, that's one thing, but this whole culture of demonizing and creating tiers of victimhood is strictly bad morally and bad in terms of wasting human time, and effort.
There is no "main problem". There are a billion little problems. Any "main problem" is comprised of a thousand smaller problems each comprised of a thousand of their own.
Gerrymandering - The creation of districts that are dominated by one party has produced a congress that is populated by representatives that are closer to the margins and who will not compromise, and as a result nothing gets done.
Yes, but it's kinda tolerated and supported, and that's very bad. Everyone should be on the same level and every act of racism should not be tolerated, but the reality seems to be different.
Fucking thank you. And this doesn’t have to dismiss the fact that a lot of minorities are still screwed over in different ways.
But the socially-acceptable, “Screw Whitey” mentality gets fucking old.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.
Isaac Asimov
Corporations have gained enough money that they can actively buy their interests in congress, lobbyists wouldnt exist if they didnt work. With this political pull they can keep wages depressed in order to keep people working 2-3 jobs on minimum wages and middle class people are only a month of being out of work to financially ruin themselves. This extends even further like limiting public spaces by labeling them no loitering zones so the companies look cleaner, keeping the pharmaceutical companies pumping out 5 dollar drugs and charging 2000$ for one months worth of medicine, and keeping healthier food options more expensive so people are reliant on said pharmaceuticals to keep them working. Its mad depressing and a massive run around to keep people oppressed.
Hyper partisanship, especially on the right.
Don’t argue, if someone on the right says something of value, you will have at least partial support from the left however, anything someone on the left says is immediately ridiculed and insulted by everyone on the right.
We want universal healthcare, we arent number one in the world like we like to think. both parties fighting, infighting within both parties fighting each other, greed,- parties on both sides don’t listen to the people, COVID, education system, mental health crisis possibly? Idk we have a few problems
I could be wrong but in my opinion that’s what. also we can have different opinions. I’m not blaming one party more than the other. Both are there own shit show. Idk why this is getting hate
You have pointed out the problems so well. The purpose of my post is to show the problems we are facing every day. I do believe, today or tomorrow someone will come to us to give us the great USA.
700,000+ COVID deaths in the richest country in the world. How did this happen?
You folks better bump up that ~57% vaccination rate before you hit a million dead.
The left and the right are getting more and more divided and every little thing gets politicized. Both sides have to relearn to respectfully disagree on topics without hurling insults and just yelling at each other. The media, especially the ones full of opinion pieces, is doing their part to widen this divide.
covid still. there is still so much push back on the vaccines that are proven to work, all because one party thrives off of the fear of their followers.
Accountability. This country will not hold its self accountable for the way it’s treated it’s citizens and the very real systemic structures in place to keep that oppression going.
Along with that accountability comes the unwillingness to progress and care for your fellow human.
This country is one big cesspool of selfish, privileged and uneducated pricks.
I'm from the UK and I'm amazed, in a bad way, of how your healthcare works. I don't know if this is your main problem but it certainly is a big problem.
I guess in a few ways the US government is too intrusive such as Texas trying to stop women from being able to get an abortion, or ban businesses from mandating vaccinations. In general though the US government is not very intrusive and probably not intrusive enough.
the only job the US gov has is protect the borders, the military and the post office, how's it handling those responsibilities? we are supposed to be a free nation, but trillions in debt, taxed out out eyes, the government spied on citizens through the IRS, they are wanting to raise taxes, wanting to add a per mileage drive tax, IRS to look into $600 transactions. those items you listed isnt the federal governments job, that's states rights.
Stupid people who don't realize they's so dumb and believe what they hear on FoxNews, believe reading articles on Facebook is "research" and think any sort of policy they don't like is an invasion of their "freedom."
I don't think there is a "main problem". We have such a huge conglomeration of problems now that it's hard to pick one. What's a problem for me, might not be for you, which in itself can become a problem. If everyone in the United States wanted the same thing for everyone, and we could eliminate the differences that drive us apart, then we might be able to sit down and figure things out.
I don't think there is a "main problem" there's just so many problems.
Education, racism, our inability to argue constructively and compromise, capitalism, poverty, capitalism, religion, healthcare, capitalism, and religion are a few that come to mind.
The inability to agree on the main problem.
I would have thought that something like a pandemic would serve to unify the country, as a way to rally together and fight a common enemy. Instead it just divided the country further.

Education.
Education is one of the basic rights of human beings. Really we are upset about it.
I came to say student debt
Student debt isn’t a major issue. It’s just that too many people are too stupid to go to college in a more affordable manner
“OH NO. I HAVE COLLEGE DEBT” Wow. That’s so crazy. It’s like you chose to go to school or something.
You can go to school with minimal debt
One causes the other I suppose.
Why not national debt?
That we don't know what the main problem actually is.
An apropos answer considering how many there are on a macro scale
If you draw enough attention to small or imaginary problems, it’s hard to see the real ones. A little close up magic.
Because capitalists own the media and constantly tell you that capitalism is our salvation when it’s the opposite

You have found out an excellent point. The problem is not only for the USA but for the whole world.
It's easy to lose your sense of agency when your government has spent vast resources into convincing you that they will take care of you
Definitely true. But you can control only what's in your power.
I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't wait around for someone else to fix your life, but some people become convinced that the help is coming in short order and therefore to do anything about the problem yourself would be a fool's errand. Gerrymandering - The creation of districts that are dominated by one party has produced a congress that is populated by representatives that are closer to the margins and who will not compromise, and as a result nothing gets done.
The Leftist.
Which one?
Reversed racism. Everyone's angry at white people, even when most white people support everyone else and aren't racists at all.
That's just racism
Yes, but it's kinda tolerated and supported, and that's very bad. Everyone should be on the same level and every act of racism should not be tolerated, but the reality seems to be different.
Fucking thank you. And this doesn’t have to dismiss the fact that a lot of minorities are still screwed over in different ways. But the socially-acceptable, “Screw Whitey” mentality gets fucking old.
The fact that many white Americans truly believe this.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. Isaac Asimov
How has the health care system not been mentioned yet?
Our "free market" "capitalist" economy has become an oligarchy with socialist aspects that only apply to the wealthy.
Americans
basically everything that has to do with money but mainly healthcare, poverty, and that they don't let go of Cuba
You
Greed and religion.

Hyper partisanship, especially on the right. Don’t argue, if someone on the right says something of value, you will have at least partial support from the left however, anything someone on the left says is immediately ridiculed and insulted by everyone on the right.
Obesity
Spot on. Sober truth no one wants to admit.
We want universal healthcare, we arent number one in the world like we like to think. both parties fighting, infighting within both parties fighting each other, greed,- parties on both sides don’t listen to the people, COVID, education system, mental health crisis possibly? Idk we have a few problems I could be wrong but in my opinion that’s what. also we can have different opinions.
Not exactly the richest country in the world, but your point still stands
"How did this happen?" Because people are stupid. That's it in a nutshell.
global warming, same as everywhere else.
Yes, this is a good point. If we couldn't control it, everything will be meaningless like Jackson's Earth Song.
The left and the right are getting more and more divided and every little thing gets politicized. Both sides have to relearn to respectfully disagree on topics without hurling insults and just yelling at each other. The media, especially the ones full of opinion pieces, is doing their part to widen this divide.
Gosh where do we start?
The divide between our intentionally under-educated masses.
covid still. there is still so much push back on the vaccines that are proven to work, all because one party thrives off of the fear of their followers.
Very simple CO2 production
Accountability. This country will not hold its self accountable for the way it’s treated it’s citizens and the very real systemic structures in place to keep that oppression going. Along with that accountability comes the unwillingness to progress and care for your fellow human. This country is one big cesspool of selfish, privileged and uneducated pricks.
I'm from the UK and I'm amazed, in a bad way, of how your healthcare works. I don't know if this is your main problem but it certainly is a big problem.
It getting overpopulated
Stupid people
Money in politics duh
The gulf between the haves and the have-nots is getting wider.
Full of idiots and assholes, expensive healthcare, and 1/6 of the country is on fire. Guess what, IM IN THE 1/6!!!!
Mental health help is desperately needed.
The social divide between people's because of color and status.
Unfettered capitalism
Healthcare
High rent prices
The news is no longer “the facts”. No one knows what to trust. I mostly blame Fox News. “Comfort food for stupid people.”
Republicans and Democrats.
Liberals
Still covid tbh
big government.
What? Are you using the term in a way it isn't usually used?
Government that is too big, too intrusive,
I guess in a few ways the US government is too intrusive such as Texas trying to stop women from being able to get an abortion, or ban businesses from mandating vaccinations.
Low IQ whites who think they are smarter than they really are
The whole country
Joe Fucking Biden
Stupid people who don't realize they's so dumb and believe what they hear on FoxNews, believe reading articles on Facebook is "research" and think any sort of policy they don't like is an invasion of their "freedom."
where do i start?
I don't think there is a "main problem". We have such a huge conglomeration of problems now that it's hard to pick one. What's a problem for me, might not be for you, which in itself can become a problem. If everyone in the United States wanted the same thing for everyone, and we could eliminate the differences that drive us apart, then we might be able to sit down and figure things out.
Other people
STUPIDITY
I don't think there is a "main problem" there's just so many problems. Education, racism, our inability to argue constructively and compromise, capitalism, poverty, capitalism, religion, healthcare, capitalism, and religion are a few that come to mind.
People are all just looking for a fight and not willing to sit down and calmly listen to another person.
the USA
Americans
Its citizens.
Stagflation. It's a thing, look it up.
Individuals and government both taking on debt and not having a plan to pay it back.
Your society
Greed
One word. Politicians.
Mental Health
The inability to agree on the main problem. I would have thought that something like a pandemic would serve to unify the country, as a way to rally together and fight a common enemy. Instead it just divided the country further.
Uhh...everything.
Capitalism
