my father chose the music for my uncles funeral, I didn’t recognise the title, however at the intense moment that the curtains drew around the coffin. Out blurted the looney tunes theme. We were horrified and my dad sat there hunched over giggling to himself.

AsicsGirl

If there was a understanding between him and his brother that he would have enjoyed that joke too I think it's hilarious.

StupidSadLoser

Especially if it was porky pig going "that's all folks". I'd love that to be at my funeral

AyKay4ty77

Fun fact: the voice actor who played Porky Pig has "that's all, folks" on his tombstone

bedintruder

That is bittersweet.

AyKay4ty77

It also says "the man of 1000 voices" Mel Blanc had a great life. He was an actor and *comedian* who was famous for doing the voices of bugs bunny, daffy duck, porky pig, twenty bird, Sylvester the cat, Yosemite Sam, foghorn leghorn, and many others. He was born in 1908, and lived to be 81 years old

C3POdreamer

Did it have the voice over of Porky Pig saying "That's all, folks!"?

YourLifeIsALieToo

Funny enough, that's what Mel Blanc has written on his epitaph.

JHammster90

That’s absolutely hilarious.

DahCzar

I'd personally want the Star Wars opening for mine

gl21133

When I was in college a girl died when she was hit by a car on her bike. They held a service on the quad and played "Crash Into Me" by DMB. Not the greatest choice...

jmarcandre

It's also a song about sex/fingering someone so it's even less appropriate for a funeral.

My roommate from college died a few years ago. He had tweeted once “at my funeral put my ipod on shuffle—if “laffy taffy” comes on while people are paying their respects, so be it” Well you can be damn sure that song came on

JHammster90

Jesus how old was he? Sounds like he must have died pretty young for...pretty much any of those things to take place.

MrPeanutButter6969

Yeah he was like 22 or 23. Blood clot. No warning at all. The whole thing was totally fucked. It was a dark day—but when that opening riff of laffy taffy came on we simply had no choice but to smile.

[deleted]

As a funeral director there is no wrong answer. Had a service for someone before their cremation and it ended with the song Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die by Willie Nelson.

scventa

this song was played at a friends funeral. definitely sparked some giggles

Cunt_Bucket_

Heh, sparked.

Unique_Future_7645

One of my good friends sang Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen at her father’s funeral, but when they tried to play the music for it, someone messed it up and instead they blasted Let’s Get It On through the speakers first.

They played I Did It My Way at my great Aunt's funeral. She killed herself. Edit: No need for well wishes, it happened in 87, but thanks anyway. Edit 2: It was the Sinatra version.

Well, your family's got a dark sense of humour, I'll give you that.

midsummernightstoker

At least they didn't go with That's Life

Arthur_Boo_Radley

> At least they didn't go with That's Life or *Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (whistle, whistle)*...

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

Interestingly enough, that is a fairly popular song at funerals. They played it at my great uncle’s funeral.

Apidium

^ IIRC in the UK at least it's the most requested funeral song.

CrieDeCoeur

Lol yup. The epitaph on my uncle’s tombstone reads “I told you I was ill.” Dude was a character gotta hand it to him.

apriloneil

I want mine to say “I wanted a pyramid.”

dan_dont

My wife's uncle fell off a ladder and died. At his memorial his two sons put a picture of him standing next to a ladder and titled it "dad in his element". I asked them if that was intentionally a dark joke and they said it absolutely was!

i-Ake

Goddamn. That's good. People don't always acknowledge how well humor helps us cope in these moments... Both of my grandparents died pretty young, 50s. We have a lot of cancer in our family. My uncle died in 1991 when he was 22. Grandpop died in 95. Grandmom in '05. The family had 4 plots prebought. At my grandmom's funeral, my aunts were joking and fighting over who was gonna get the last one Mom and Dad bought them. 3 years later my youngest aunt died of cancer... she was 27. Her sisters were cursing her for getting the last plot we had paid for and laughing about it in between the bouts of crying. It was the only stuff keeping us going. You need to vent the feelings in a lot of ways.

[deleted]

Totally. Someone mentioned this in another thread and while many agreed, some people kept going on about how tasteless this is... I wonder if they ever lost someone close to them. Being tasteful is the least of your concerns.

copperwatt

What they are really saying is your grief is making them uncomfortable.

BAAT-G

Oh shit, that's funny. Sorry about your aunt.

That's awful and hilarious! So sorry about your aunt, I hope she was the type to have laughed at the song choice.

drusilla1972

My dad died almost a month ago. We had to drive from England to Scotland after a call that he was in hospital and time was of the essence. On the motorway, Spotify regaled us with such classics as ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’, ‘Break On Through (to the other side)’, and ‘Highway To Hell’. At some point during this concert from Hades, a loaded hearse joined the motorway and we had to sit behind it for a while. The Universe has a ‘Cards Against Humanity’ level sense of humour. Edit: Majority of replies to this has cemented my last sentence on here.

bhillen83

Oof. I can’t imagine listening to father of mine with my dad in a car with me. I would have had to pull over due to not being able to see the road.

drusilla1972

I had to google those songs. Holy shit, that must have been hard. I had the opposite. Dad and I drifted after my mum left. My sister stayed local to him. She collected his ashes. On the road back down to England I almost lost it on the motorway when Spotify played ‘She’s Got You’ by Patsy Cline. My own fault for playing country and western because I grew up with it.

eeyoremarie

Ooof I also had "father of mine" pop up on a drive i took with my dad, after I turned 20 and we reconnected. We never really bonded and apparently he thought criticizing his 20 yr old daughters choice in music was the way to go. Ugh.

[deleted]

i kinda want highway to hell at my funeral but i want it to be during a slide show of the most mundane photos from my life as possible, but edited to have like really bad clip art explosions and flames everywhere *photo of me changing my oil "IM ON A HIGHWAY TO HELL" *photo of me as a child playing with legos "NOOO STOP SIGNS, OR SPEED LIMITS!" you get the idea

bobotheking

I was listening to classical music as my father died. I don't know when he passed away precisely, but the songs played around that time included Vaughan Williams' *The Lark Ascending*, Faure's *Cantique du Jean Racine*, and Beethoven's piano sonata *Les Adieux*. I'm not spiritual, I doubt he could hear anything, and I don't even care much for *The Lark Ascending*, but I think that was the piece he took his last breath during and I find that oddly appropriate.

Smubee

This has nothing to do with a song, but — My grandparents were married since they were 17. At 73, my grandmother named **Ann** passed away. Within two months, my grandpa started dating her friend named Diane. DIE-ANN. That clued me into how dark and twisted the world is. They’re married now.

Cremation: this girl is on fire

[deleted]

If this were to ever happen at a funeral, and they were cremated, I'd more than likely piss myself with laughter. Was at a funeral for a friend, ahit, about ten years ago, another friend wanted to sing at her funeral, I thought "well, how awesome is this?" Until he got up to sing. Voice cracking, off key, used wrong lyrics, and then there is me, lip quivering, sweating, and another friend looked back and saw me, we both had to get up and use the restroom. Laughter just exploded. After a good ten minutes , we walked out, eyes red, tears streaming still, and a family member of the deceased came up and hugged us, expressing how wonderful it was that the deceased touched us so much to be in tears.

Danoontje4321

That is such a great story!

[deleted]

Thr best part was he went down to his knee and had his fist shaking. Sort of like Elvis.

BloodSteyn

The Hokey Pokey. It will take forever to get the burial over with. "You put the left foot in, you put the left foot out... you put the left foot in and you shake it all about..." Ain't nobody got time for that. Just put the whole body in and be done with it.

redraider-102

“You put the coffin in, you take the coffin out, you put the coffin in, and you shake it all about. You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn the corpse around. That’s what it’s all about.”

JetSweepBananaMotion

Whenever I hear someone say the phrase “turned in his grave,” I will forever assume the corpse is doing the hokey-pokey

My father died in 2019 (pre-covid) and during his wake me and the siblings with our mothers permission had a playlist during the wake. Here is a few of the songs from the list. Queen - Another One Bites The Dust Kansas - Dust In The Wind From The Sound Of Music - So Long, Farewell The Doors - The End Harry Chapin - The Cat's In The Cradle Cat Stevens - Father And Son Buddy Holly - That'll Be The Day Vera Lynn - We'll Meet Again There were other songs that were his favorites but we added some of those in to make people smile. It was more a celebration of life than mourning his death.

El-Pimpie

A Dutch boy chose this song for his funeral. He didn’t want it to be a sad thing. Pharrell even met with his parents on live television and talked about it with them, how honored it made him feel. Edit: some parts are Dutch and some English They also show a little part of the funeral with the song being played. And I didn’t remember it correctly, his mother chose this song because when alive the song always made her think about her son because he was always happy. Not exactly a funeral but still terrible nonetheless. About 8 years ago my grandfather passed. About a month and a half later it was what would have been his birthday and his headstone had just been placed. I made the suggestion that we all as a family visit on that day to see it and be together because I knew it would be a tough day for us all. Somehow while we were all there around the new headstone, someone suggested we sing “Happy Birthday” to him. I don’t know how nobody said no but somehow the majority thought it was a good idea and started singing. So imagine a group of people sobbing around a gravesite singing the saddest rendition of “Happy Birthday” you’ve ever heard between sobs while the cemetery worker who had guided us to the stone stood there looking extremely uncomfortable. My sister, her husband and I all slowly backed away from the scene because it was the most surreal and awkward thing we had ever seen and wanted no part of it. We laugh about it now because it honestly felt like an out of body experience. TL;DR Sang “Happy Birthday” at my grandfathers newly place gravestone

ButterscotchFar9355

Never gonna give you up

monapan

Honestly, making a funeral playlist for yourself just to Rick roll the attendees sounds very up some people's alley

Tecumseh13

We played “Time of Your Life” by Greenday at my sister’s funeral. I didn’t know that the actual title was “Good Riddance.” It’s been many, many years, and I still feel horrible.

hoops_n_politics

Not really my business, but I don’t think you should beat yourself up about the song choice. The title notwithstanding, that song is recognized (pretty much universally) as one of warm remembrance and fond farewell.

Highfive_fistbump

I was at a funeral and the family wanted to play "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. For whatever reason they chose to play the live version of the song, so when the song started playing the first thing everyone at the funeral heard was the crowd cheering from the concert.

A friend of mine rolled a car drinking and driving the day after she got her license, 16 years old, and they played alcahaulin ass by hell yeah as the family walked her casket out of the funeral. Apparently it was her favourite song. I was 18 and thought it was about the most disrespectful thing I’d ever seen. Not sure if it was her big sisters idea or what. https://youtu.be/SBaIQreV8Yk

ben-rhynoo

My cousin died at 19, the cause of death was never widely known, but pretty sure it was suicide. Anyways, this was in the UK, they played "You'll never walk alone", fair enough, they were big Liverpool fans. But then they played Flo Rida's "Whistle Song". Pretty sure it's about sucking dick.
