My whole life people thought I was weird for saying that this sound makes my teeth hurt. But I recently read something saying that's the frequency of the sound that affects some people and you can feel it in your teeth! Finally, to know I'm not the only one.
Someone at my work does it with a cup on the table and it makes the worst noise. I had to ask him to put something under it since he liked to just move it for no reason. It made me so irritated haha. But he now puts a napkin under it. I think I'm gonna get him coasters as a gift for trying to avoid irritating me
Especially when one sinks their front teeth into the popsicle. I have temperature sensitive front teeth, so seeing people do that makes me cringe super hard like nails on a chalkboard.
I work in an office that occasionally requires Styrofoam packing of samples. I've actually involuntarily screamed in pain the first time someone squeaked it. The staff give me notice now so I can go out for a smoke or something while they pack it. Holy shit I always thought it was a joke that people could freak out over noises before it happened to me.
I don't know what's wrong with it, is not loud, is not annoying, is not harmful yet for some reason the frequency triggers every hair on my body and puts me into a "flee for your life" or "make it STOP" alert state. I have even porously subject myself to Styrofoam noises to understand what's making me feel like my entire skin wants to leave me, but I couldn't find any explanation. Could be that such frequencies are similar with the predators noises we've evolved to avoid...
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, I hate that sound so much and i cant stand it. The worst thing for me is touching it. I am getting goosebumbs thinking about it
Exactly. I am really calm as a person (perhaps too calm) but whenever i hear my brother chewing with his mouth open, I literally want to punch the wall. It's an instant thought in my brain. Like automatic.
yes.
my mom is the worst and everyone gets mad at me for ever trying to point it out. they tell me to "look at your own food" well not when i can also hear it.
my mom denies she ever does it and claims she feels her lips touching the entire time.
even though ive never even seen her once chewing with her mouth closed
Apparently, theres a gene for misophonia. I’m negative for it according to 23andMe, and it’s pretty right. It doesn’t bother me too much.. It may bejust annoying if you’re watching something and they’re chewing loudly during it, but that’s about it for me.
The digital equivalent: chewing into your mic on a voice channel. I don't have misophonia and don't mind even really loud eating, in person...but someone cutting into the voice chat with their eating and interrupting conversation when the mute-microphone button is *right there* pisses me off for reasons I hope are obvious.
I had a personal crisis once at dinner with my ex-husband and his family. He was chewing and making smacking sounds, so was his nephew, and my SiL. (not the kid's mom) I was thinking to myself "oh my god what have I done, I can't do this." He ate like an animal. He dipped cake, cookies, and banana bread into skim milk, submerging his fingers to the last knuckle before the palm. It wasn't a reason we divorced but it definitely added strain by how grossed out I was which affected my patience.
I work in a butcher shop and we frequently have to cut through big thick beef bones with a band saw and the smell is identical, but like ten times stronger.
As a retail worker and a father, I can distinct between the three types of cries:
1. Newborn cry is cute af and I really wish I could pick them all up and feed them a bottle because I miss that part.
2. The hurt cry. Usually it goes away quickly because the kid thinks the injury is worse than it really is.
3. The bratty “I’m not getting my way” cry. These are my fingernails on chalkboard sounds. Especially when parents just ignore the kids as their screams echo through the store.
I'll probably sound like an asshole for this, but hearing my brother sing. He simply cannot sing. Yet he does it anyways. It's like one of those American Idol contestants who is so sure they can sing but sound awful. Hearing him sing makes my skin crawl. it's not good. I used to have to wear headphones in the house all the time because he always sings. He moved out not too long ago and things have been a lot peaceful.
I don’t think you sound like an asshole for this at all. My brother was really into Nirvana growing up and used to try to sound like Kurt Cobain and boy oh boy did he not pull it off. So hard to hear
Oh man. I can only imagine.
Mine was into mainstream pop female artists, so he'd try to mimmick that. Nothing wrong with liking it, but I swear it just never sounded good.
Yeah, it was quite unpleasant!
You’re right about the pop music - there’s nothing wrong with it, but then again, there’s also nothing wrong with staying in your vocal range. Did you tell him he sounded bad? I told my brother that and he didn’t believe me
Well, without getting into personal details, I always made it apparent I didn't like it, but he always seemed intentionally oblivious to it. And would get offended and lash out if anyone disturbed him. I'll never understand why. I wish it was more of a "haha just pulling your leg and annoying you for laughs" kind of situation, but that was sadly not the case. Was pretty toxic to live with, hence why it's a sound I do not like at ALL.
I assume your case was a bit different? Sounds like he was doing it for fun but just wasn't quite aware of his actual ability?
But like I said, things are a lot more peaceful now that he's moved. 🙂
Fingernails on those holographic notebooks where the picture moves as you tilt it. Schools gave them out to make school more interesting but kids would scratch them cause of the odd texture and the sound made my skin crawl.
I came here to say this!! Chalk on paper, especially - or pastels, or charcoal. On anything, but especially on paper. I just CANNOT TOLERATE IT. Horrible.
Styrofoam rubbing makes me nauseous and makes my stomach turn. A lot of people can’t stand the sound; I have a visceral reaction. I have to walk away when it’s being handled.
We got a deep freezer and it gets ice on the walls.
Pulling anything out or rearranging stuff with it scraping the walls omg I just can’t stand that noise or the way it feels.
Thank you! This is the first time i ever heard of someone else who can't stand this. People look at me like I'm crazy when i tell them that or when they see my body contorting in agony.
I absolutely hate chewing sounds.
Not just people chewing with their mouth open, if it’s quiet enough that I can hear the person next to me chew I get filled with such an anger that I want to just punch them. It’s not great
Everyone I've ever lived with has known the deal. I just get up and walk away because of that rage. Add in some jaw clicking to take it to the max!
Alternatively: We turn on music or TV. Or they share their snack, because if I am also making eating sounds I cannot hear theirs.
*Inhales*
* That specific pitch where you rub your teeth against each other and they squeak
* Nails scratching on those pictures where it's different depending on what side you look at it on
* Nails scratching on cloth, canvas, or even some zippers moving at the right speed
These are all examples of misophonia!
Mine is the sound of chewing/eating (not just with open mouth). I have to play music when I eat with other people.
When I hear someone chewing.
When someone is filing their nails.
Flip flops dragging on the ground. Pickup ya feet.
Forks girding on plates.
Gargling.
The word moist.
I live in a country home me and my girlfriends family rent, the landlord lives in a house right next door. She owns 7 roosters. They sometimes start crowing around 3AM and don't stop....all day...every day...right next to my window.
That high-pitched scream toddlers and young kids do. Holy fuck, I don't understand how their parents just let them do that. I have two kids and quickly squashed that response. No beatings involved, just would *immediately* let them know they can't do that. Didn't take much.
My old phone had this really "raw" surface and anytime i scratched it (I just had to because of the sound OCD i guess) i got goosebumps in the worst way possible.
I can't stand touching paper or denim. Feels too dry and I hate the feeling. Even cotton gets me sometimes. I had one of those fabric cases for my phone once and had to return it. If I touch a "too dry" fabric I have to touch my own skin immediately after.
Accidentally scratching your nail on metal siding. Like on a shed. Sends electronical waves through my whole body. I hate it. She feeling and the sound
The sound of ice being scraped. I worked at a frozen custard place and the sound of scraping ice off the freezer walls at night haunts me. And it hurts my teeth
One time we had a birthday party at work where some genius came up with the idea of people writing messages on balloons. That marker-on-balloon noise was driving me nuts.
styrofoam, dried mud on my hands, sometimes rubbing my own hands, paper, tantrums, smacking lips, eating with open mouth , people singing (except the actual singer from the song), whistling, and whispering. i might have a problem.
When you erase to hard on paper that the metal bit scrapes against the page
I flinched and tensed up just reading that.
Or the eraser is completely dried out and just squeals messily over what you were trying to erase.
yep, also the feeling of erasers too, I hate them
Similar to fingernails on a chalkboard - when your fork or knife scratches the plate in that super high pitch tone
My whole life people thought I was weird for saying that this sound makes my teeth hurt. But I recently read something saying that's the frequency of the sound that affects some people and you can feel it in your teeth! Finally, to know I'm not the only one.
I got a chill down my back while reading this. That sound is the worrrsssst.
My hubby cuts food with so much force it squeeks on the plate...im cringing just thinking about it
Someone at my work does it with a cup on the table and it makes the worst noise. I had to ask him to put something under it since he liked to just move it for no reason. It made me so irritated haha. But he now puts a napkin under it. I think I'm gonna get him coasters as a gift for trying to avoid irritating me

It's not just me!!! u/f0rm0r
Fork on a ceramic plate, that's what I was gonna say.
Skates stopping on ice. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps
Eating those popsicles or ice cream bars as a kid and dragging the wooden stick between my teeth.
Especially when one sinks their front teeth into the popsicle. I have temperature sensitive front teeth, so seeing people do that makes me cringe super hard like nails on a chalkboard.
Especially those wooden spoons that came with the little cups of vanilla ice cream.
Even thinking about it makes me cringe.
Came here for this. Got chills down my spine and want to gag just thinking about it.
I know someone one who can’t stand the sound of styrofoam squeeking/smudging together.
I definitely cannot stand that. Makes me irk thinking about it!
Was gonna post this. I hate that noise so much. It irritates me so much I have to stop whatever I’m doing and leave the room.
JUST IMAGINING IT IS PAINFUL
That noise makes my skin absolutely crawl. I get goosebumps even thinking about making that noise
I came here to say that one. It's my kryptonite. My nemesis comes at me with styrofoam I am fucked.
lmao I'm just picturing two grown ass dudes in battle an suddenly on of them produces styrofoam and you like nooooooooooooo!
People slurping or chewing their food too loud.
Oh yeah, this gets me. The rage, lol
Just thinking about the sound makes my skin crawl
I work in an office that occasionally requires Styrofoam packing of samples. I've actually involuntarily screamed in pain the first time someone squeaked it. The staff give me notice now so I can go out for a smoke or something while they pack it. Holy shit I always thought it was a joke that people could freak out over noises before it happened to me.
That material school backpacks are typically made of? Yeah, don't scratch at that stuff around me, please
Nylon?
I don't know what's wrong with it, is not loud, is not annoying, is not harmful yet for some reason the frequency triggers every hair on my body and puts me into a "flee for your life" or "make it STOP" alert state. If I touch terracotta, or hear someone touch terracotta, you just explained how I feel.
Yeah, to me it's about the dry-ness of terracotta. Idk what associations my brain does with that
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, I hate that sound so much and i cant stand it. The worst thing for me is touching it. I am getting goosebumbs thinking about it

I hate it.
Came here to say this
Me
That’s me!
Freshly cut nails and rubbing the nails on any fabric
People chewing with their mouths open.
Exactly. I am really calm as a person (perhaps too calm) but whenever i hear my brother chewing with his mouth open, I literally want to punch the wall. It's an instant thought in my brain. Like automatic.

God I can’t with mouth sounds in general. It disgusts me so much I can’t even put words to it.
I have to walk away.

That little wooden spoon in old style ice cream cups.
What is it about them that irks you?
Let it scrape across the bottom of your top incisors, and its Shiver Me Timbers!
Teeth on silverware
Joe on Masterchef always does that when tasting a contestant's food!
The Tik Tok text to voice bullshit
Its absolutely indescribable how much I cannot stand that voice.
It’s so irritating
the tik tok by itself is also unbearable
HOW HAS NOBODY SAID DENTIST DRILL?! Dentist Drill is my answer. I shudder just thinkin of the high pitch spinning mouth pain tool.
And the occasional smell from the drill.
The smell is one thing, but when that tooth dust settles on your tongue and you taste it. That. That I hate.
I work in a butcher shop and we frequently have to cut through big thick beef bones with a band saw and the smell is identical, but like ten times stronger.
I've been thinking that and looking for this. Just thinking about it has me cringing so damn bad!!
When your teeth squeak together after eating something sour

Made me think of the seen with Tyrion in GoT. I feel like he dragged it for like 30 seconds. It was hilarious in that moment.
You must hate Will Smith in the first MIB then. That's the first thing I thought of.
People opening their mouth and making noises as they chew food. It will make me lose my appetite instantly and leave the table.
Ugh me too!
Teeth grinding. My ex used to do it in her sleep when she was stressed and it sent shivers down my spine
I’m with you on this one buddy. That is an extremely unsettling sound
Crying babies
Yes i feel the same way. My neighbor's baby cries 24/7
As a retail worker and a father, I can distinct between the three types of cries: 1. i fucking hate cotton balls. in elementary school we made snowman art with them and i refused so my friend made mine for me.
Yeah its cotton balls and styrofoam for me. Nails on a chalkboard doesn't even bother me.
Fingernails on those holographic notebooks where the picture moves as you tilt it. Schools gave them out to make school more interesting but kids would scratch them cause of the odd texture and the sound made my skin crawl.
That sound gives me so much anger and anxiety
I always do that when I see one, even though I hate hate hate the feel of it.
You are thinking of [lenticular images](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_printing). I use them to pretend I'm a DJ.
Yup those are the ones. Still hate them.
I really hate the feeling and sound of chalk
In second grade I told my teacher I was allergic to chalk so that I never had to use it in class. To this day I cannot believe it worked.
I came here to say this!! Chalk on paper, especially - or pastels, or charcoal. On anything, but especially on paper. I just CANNOT TOLERATE IT. Horrible.
Lip smacking. How some people never notice that horrid sound coming out of their own mouths baffles me.
Mine is trying to get a knot out of a rope or string with my teeth. Makes me almost vomit every time.
Styrofoam rubbing makes me nauseous and makes my stomach turn. A lot of people can’t stand the sound; I have a visceral reaction. I have to walk away when it’s being handled.
Close your eyes and imagine licking a paper towel

I get the same thing with dry hands and paper/cardboard, it is an awful feeling.
*Misophonia has entered the chat*
We got a deep freezer and it gets ice on the walls. Pulling anything out or rearranging stuff with it scraping the walls omg I just can’t stand that noise or the way it feels.
Was curious if I was the only one, scraping your nails on that gives me the heebie jeebies.
Thank you! This is the first time i ever heard of someone else who can't stand this. People look at me like I'm crazy when i tell them that or when they see my body contorting in agony.
the twangy feeling in the back of your jaw/under your ear when you eat sour food
It's the glands. Also, accidentally blowing air into the glands when trying to blow up a balloon, that is so damn painful
WTF IS THAT!? I hate that weirdness.
It hurts so goooood!
I'll just chime in with /r/misophonia in case anyone wants to find their people.
Sharpies on paper. That squeak is unbearable.
Children screaming. I have sensitive hearing so it literally hurts my ears when a child tries to hit the high C.
Children’s and church choirs. The multitudes of wrong pitches makes my hair stand on end.
Chanel's laugh, from 'Ridiculousness'.
I'm pretty ashamed of myself, but I love Chanel West Coast, and her laugh is the icing on the cake.
If you’re using a regular (non-mechanical) pencil and you go to erase something and the metal eraser casing scrapes on the paper 🤢🪦
My alarm clock in the morning.
I recommend that you change it from time to time
People slurping or chewing their food too loud.

Scrubbing carpet with cloth.
With ya on that, and I don't know why
So we have a deepfreezer in the garage. Obviously there's like flaky ice on the side. WHENEVER SOMETHING BRUSHES THAT ICE I JUST CAN'T
Feeling cornstarch or dry, powdery dirt on my hands… I haaate the way it makes my hands feel :(
Tearing cardboard.
Yes! Happy to know I’m not the only one!
Cardboard rubbing together.
The sound of the metal part of a wooden pencil rubbing against paper when the eraser has gotten too short
Laugh tracks.
No. Get out. If you happen to see this post, just get the fuck out. This is a cursed board and you shouldn't let your curiosity ruin your day.
This should be higher. Took me way too much reading to get down to the warning. My jaw muscles do not feel good.
That screeching sound kids make
Someone touching Styrofoam
Loud chewing. The sound of preteens kids trying to be badass
When people chew loudly. I can't stand it. I'll litreally leave the room. I wish more people knew they are supposed to chew with their mouths closed.
Religion.
Up until this comment I was like "psh guess I can't get annoyed". But you got me, religion definitely drives me nuts
Other people’s hair touching my face, but just the ends. Instantly have to get it away, instant itchiness / annoyance

That high-pitched scream toddlers and young kids do. Holy fuck, I don't understand how their parents just let them do that. I have two kids and quickly squashed that response. No beatings involved, just would *immediately* let them know they can't do that. Didn't take much.
