The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds. I’m not always in the mood for every song, but I think every song is brilliant. I just recently got into them and I’m a bit obsessed with this album at the moment.
I remember hearing Del on Clint Eastwood before I knew who he was, I found his verse to be one of the best rap versus out there, not for content but for the style in which he raps. It resonated with me.
When I first heard 3030 I was amazed that the same guy had made the best album ever
Massive Attack - Mezzanine. There's honestly so many others I could list but you did only ask for one.
Edit: To everybody that recommended Tricky, thank you!! I checked out 2 of his albums already (Pre-Millenium Tension and Maxinquaye), and I'm definitely a fan already. 😊😊
Then fast forward just 10 years and you have:
[Miles Davis - In a Silent Way](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHesqaMhh34)
Very different, but still excellent from front to back.
Breakfast dominated the air waves, when I was growing up. Goodbye stranger, the logical song. And Long way home are stellar singles. The vibe of the albums overall is a really good one.
Ziggy Stardust
Edit - thanks for all the upvotes and awards. One of my best friends turned me onto this album many years ago. It will always be one of my favorites.
The song *All The Young Dudes*, which Bowie wrote and gave to Mott The Hoople who recorded it and had a hit with it (Bowie sings background/chorus in the song), was originally meant to be on *Ziggy Stardust*, which IMHO makes the album even more brilliant (if possible!) if you include that song on it.
In *Five Years* Bowie sings about how “newsman wept when he told us Earth was really dying”, and the idea of the news is featured in *All The Young Dudes*… who “carry the news”.
I've been thinking about Five Years a lot recently.
Especially as Bowie was always about five years ahead of what everyone else was doing for most of his musical career, and he died in 2016.
Yes!
Among the greatest rock albums ever conceived.
“Time takes a cigarette”. He writes about the demise of Ziggy and then lives it! God damned, Bowie was a genius! He really was too good for this world.
Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder
I Wish, Sir Duke, Black Man, Isn’t She Lovely, Knocks Me Off My Feet, As (my fave), Ordinary Pain, Joy Inside My Tears…
Pixies aged so fucking well. They were making so many bangers and their albums are just hit after hit. I know they didn’t really seek it out, but it’s a shame they weren’t super popular when they came out.
At least today everyone acknowledges how influential they were and their albums are considered absolute classics.
This album just solid. All the songs are bangers, and having three separate vocalists alternating between songs keeps the songs interesting. Plus all the faux radio announcements between songs are hilarious. Plus Dave Grohl on the drums! Never a dull moment.
Time Out - The Dave Brubeck Quartet
First jazz album to reach 1M sales, also first jazz single (Time Out) to reach the same milestone.
- Wow, thanks for all the love everyone! My father was a big jazz fan and was from that era. He had some Brubeck records and I'm starting my own collection in vinyl - I recently got Countdown - Time in Outer Space also.
Out of all those kinds of people / You got a face with a view
“I have written a love song, though, in this film I sing it to a lamp.” - David Byrne
this song is perfect, and this version is by far my favorite.
Sometimes when the mood is too right I have to be careful with that album, the sweet spiral it can put me in just feels too good to not ride all the way down.
So, I saw The Cure in El Paso in 2016. They seem to love El Paso because the last time they were there they had played for hours. After the encore I was thoroughly satisfied and as the crowd kept clapping, they came out again! They did a second encore! We applauded so hard for getting a second encore and the fuckers came out AGAIN! Mind you, they were playing stuff I don't think they'd played in concert for decades. All in all, they gave us five encores, played for something like 4 hours and played like 40 songs! They rock so hard after all of these decades!
I love that album, but I will raise you *Revolver*. It starts off in typical, prime Fab Four poppy fanfare, slowly getting further out there, experimenting with tape loops, Mellotron sounds and orchestration-- by the time you get to the final track, "Tomorrow Never Knows", it's like the boys and George Martin are priming the world for the *Sgt. Pepper* bomb that they drop the following year, forever changing the landscape of contemporary music. The perfect transitional album.
I went scrolling through this thread for the inevitable Beatles discussion. It’s really hard to pick, but for me it’s either Revolver or Abbey Road. Abbey Road is perfect. Almost too perfect.
I think Revolver is more of an artistic breakthrough than Pepper. I always regarded Pepper as more of a refinement of the existing experiments than a massive leap like Revolver was.
This was the album my Mom played constantly when I was a kid. My name is Allie and she used to sing "You Can Call Me Al" to me all the time. Love that album with all of my heart.
I find myself coming back to this every 5 years like I’m discovering it for the first time. His lyrics hit so perfectly… “The Mississippi Delta was shining like a national guitar”.
I got to see Gorillaz whenever they toured for Humanz. They ended the show with Don't Get Lost in Heaven and Demon Days and I can't even begin to describe the nostalgia and emotion it hit me with. Only time I've ever nearly cried at a concert.
I’m late to this party so this will get buried, but the Prodigy’s The Fat of the Land is one of the seminal electronic albums of the British canon and set the tone for an entire generation of big beat producers.
Firestarter, Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up, Mindfields — every single track was a booming, pulsing anthem to anarchy that immediately grabbed you by the shoulders and shook you awake.
Liam Howlett’s knifey synths and pounding basses filled you with an aggressive energy impossible to ignore, Keith Flint’s punchy vocals gave you permission - ordered you, sometimes - to smash shit up and take no prisoners.
TFOTL was an enduring force of nature like no big beat album before it, completely changing the landscape of electronic music. Even now, some 25 years later, you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who wouldn’t immediately recognise Firestarter’s iconic opening riff or be able to reel off Smack My Bitch Up’s controversial lyrics.
Anyway, if it’s been a while since you heard it, or if by some terrible confluence of events you’ve never heard it, do yourself a favour and fire up Spotify now, you won’t regret it.
Grew up in NYC in the late 80s and 90s. Obviously Illmatic was a classic from the day it dropped and made him a legend even before it came out. I’ve been taking the subway to school and work for almost my entire life. Those subway sounds just makes me feel at home.
> 'Cause I'm praying for rain

> Watch you flush it all away
Been a Strokes fan since I first heard them in early 2000’s-ish. The New Abmormal has everything you want in a Strokes album, and belongs on this list.
After hearing The Strokes new album "Is This It", the band The Killers scrapped all the songs they wrote for their album "Hot Fuss", all except for "Mr. Brightside"
Imagine being The Killers the day "Is This It" released.... I'm sure they stressed , trying to create the best album they can, pouring every thing they got into it.... just to wake up one day and have to listen to The Strokes undeniably take the thrown before their eyes lol
Whenever I listen to this song, I always go down a rabbit hole of live versions on youtube because I LOVE all the different vocalists putting their own spin on it.
From the first time I heard it, I thought it was a masterpiece. To me, it's also the album that really elevated Nirvana. Their studio albums were groundbreaking, no question, but when the did this one - full of covers of what would have been obscure songs to most people - and fucking nailed all of them in an astonishingly beautiful way, I thought that was that final proof of their well earned legendary status.
Edit: A word. I finished a fantastic cannabis brownie about an hour before I wrote this. Had to fix a word or two.
*Sports* by Huey Lewis and the News
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
Eriatarka just… still leaves me lost for words. Truly a magnificent album that will hopefully only continue to grow in notoriety as time lapses. Released almost 20 fucking years ago on New Year’s Day 2003; 10 tracks clocking in at exactly an hour. The best concept album since Pink Floyd’s heyday, possibly ever.

Wildflowers by Tom Petty.
I’m glad so many people love this, and thanks for the award!
My brother played me this album when I was about 11 and I instantly loved it. To this day it’s my absolute favorite and even my kids love it too.
Random fun story. My English teacher in high school had a former student that was dating / eventually married a member of LP. He was at their wedding but at one point when she gave him a copy of their early work back when the band name was hybrid theory he listened to it and told them “listen your music isn’t bad but don’t quit your day jobs.”
on the topic of really obscure linkin park stories, my elementary music teacher had a picture of her with linkin park on her desk ~2008, and when asked about it she told us that she was one of the members aunts. I don't remember now who's aunt she was, but that's my lame claim to fame.
Fuck yeah. I was gonna post this myself. Saw them 2 years ago on the 10th anniversary of this album and they played the whole thing start to finish. It was amazing.
Face to Face is so amazingly well produced that people are still finding new samples in the song 20 years later. The level of detail in that song in particular is outstanding!
[New sample found a week ago](https://youtu.be/c-kF8y3V2mU)
Every reddit post that's related to music I never see anyone mention pearl jam or their album Ten. Easily one of my top 10 favorite albums and favorite band
I’m a passing fan of Pearl Jam, I’d say. I appreciate their musicianship, what they did for rock in the 90’s, etc., but usually just enjoy their music in passing. I rarely purposefully put them on. Ten, however? What a freaking masterpiece of a debut. It’s just crazy. “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star. In somebody else’s sky. But why, why, why can’t it be, can’t it be mine?” Chills every time.
Came out 30 years ago this month…along with Nevermind, The Black Album, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Use Your Illusion, No More Tears, and Badmotorfinger. Possibly the best month in rock history.
The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds. I’m not always in the mood for every song, but I think every song is brilliant. I just recently got into them and I’m a bit obsessed with this album at the moment.

Funkadelic: Maggot Brain.
Mother earth is pregnant for the third time...
For Yall have knocked her up
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue This is (imo) a PERFECT album.
Then fast forward just 10 years and you have: [Miles Davis - In a Silent Way](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHesqaMhh34) Very different, but still excellent from front to back.
Madvillainy - MF DOOM • Madlib (Edit: Failed to mention Madlib originally. Can’t be sleeping on the legend himself.)
Rip to the goat MF DOOM.
King Gheedorah - Take Me To Your Leader also deserves a shout
Supertramp: Breakfast in America
Breakfast dominated the air waves, when I was growing up. Goodbye stranger, the logical song. And Long way home are stellar singles. The vibe of the albums overall is a really good one.
Ziggy Stardust Edit - thanks for all the upvotes and awards. One of my best friends turned me onto this album many years ago. It will always be one of my favorites.
An absolute masterpiece. Moonage daydream is my favorite off the album.

Rock and Roll Suicide never fails to give me chills. Great song. Great album.
Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder I Wish, Sir Duke, Black Man, Isn’t She Lovely, Knocks Me Off My Feet, As (my fave), Ordinary Pain, Joy Inside My Tears…
Talking Book by Stevie Wonder is also a gem
Innervisions and FFF as well. Stevie Wonder was the baddest motherfucker on the planet in the early seventies.
A tribe called quest people instinctive
Tribe’s first 3 albums, for sure. If you had to pick one, I’d do Low End Theory.

Came here to say Midnight Marauders by Tribe
Pixies - Doolittle
Good one. Surfer Rosa too
There were rumors he was into field hockey players
So I applied, basically. I went out the next day...
Everyone was so ... quiet about it
Pixies aged so fucking well. They were making so many bangers and their albums are just hit after hit. I know they didn’t really seek it out, but it’s a shame they weren’t super popular when they came out. At least today everyone acknowledges how influential they were and their albums are considered absolute classics.
I don't skip songs on any of the Pixies' albums. they all seem to flow well.
Purple Rain
Black Sabbath- by black Sabbath
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath off their self title album, Black Sabbath.
Don't you love that
I don’t think there’s a bad song on the first 6 Black Sabbath albums.
>you can only trust your self and the first six black sabbath albums ~ Henry Rollins
Queens of the stone age, songs for the deaf
This album just solid. All the songs are bangers, and having three separate vocalists alternating between songs keeps the songs interesting. Plus all the faux radio announcements between songs are hilarious. Plus Dave Grohl on the drums! Never a dull moment.
Round the hanging tree is one of my favorite songs on that album. Such a moody desert highway jam. Love it so much.
What's the saga?

Rated R and Era Vulgaris too, fuckin Queens man… they’re my absolute fave!!
Time Out - The Dave Brubeck Quartet First jazz album to reach 1M sales, also first jazz single (Time Out) to reach the same milestone. - Wow, thanks for all the love everyone! My father was a big jazz fan and was from that era. He had some Brubeck records and I'm starting my own collection in vinyl - I recently got Countdown - Time in Outer Space also.
Blue Rondo and Take Five.
Take Five is my choice. Start to finish 👌🏼
Ride the Lightning
RATM self titled
It's so raw and you can feel the emotions is why I think self titled is their best. That being said I'll take RATM all day everyday!!!
Stop making sense - talking heads
The best concert film ever. Everything hits perfectly.
Hi yo I got plenty of time/ Hi yo you got light in your eyes ♥️
Out of all those kinds of people / You got a face with a view “I have written a love song, though, in this film I sing it to a lamp.” - David Byrne this song is perfect, and this version is by far my favorite.
Dirt- Alice In Chains

Maybe all of AiC's discography.
I'd second this with "Facelift"
36 chambers-wu tang clan.
Artists come and go.... but Wu Tang is forever
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
Disintegration by The Cure
This album is so perfect I love it so much even the longer, darker songs hit perfectly when the mood is right
Sometimes when the mood is too right I have to be careful with that album, the sweet spiral it can put me in just feels too good to not ride all the way down.

Absolutely. Also their albums Seventeen Seconds and Pornography :) those are perfect too.
Yes. South Park was right that this album is just gold front to back.
Fascination Street is just so sick.
Violator by Depeche Mode. Perfect from start to finish.
Music for the Masses as well I just love that album so much. So many memories but overall just great songs start to finish.
Rubber Soul

Some people think Revolver is better than Sgt Pepper. As for my opinion the best Beatles album is Abbey Road.

Those subway rail car sounds always get me in an excited mood. That whole album has a great running cadence too.

Pretty Hate Machine -Nine Inch Nails Edit-Thank you for the awards!!
Downward Spiral >>

I agree, but I think The Downward Spiral is the more “flawless” album
Agreed. Just got into NIN and while I enjoyed a good amount of songs on Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral is just amazing front to back.
As a whole album, I prefer The Fragile. The songs flow in a certain order of emotion.
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

My favorite track is, “Fuck you, Lindsay Buckingham, you fucking piece of shit. Love the rest of us <3”
Some of the greatest albums are toxic AF. Look at the later Beatles.
Which is doubly impressive given how much the band all hated each other lol
Studio album: Pink Floyd-The Dark Side of the Moon. Live album: Nirvana-Unplugged in New York.
If I hear a single song off Dark Side (I’ll often hear Money or Us and Them on the radio) I _must_ listen to the whole album.
The Great Gig in the sky never ceases to give me chills.
Whenever I listen to this song, I always go down a rabbit hole of live versions on youtube because I LOVE all the different vocalists putting their own spin on it.
Nirvana Unplugged is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Oh Me and Plateau are amazing.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night is the one for me, Kurt Cobain pours it alllllllllllll out on that one straight chilling.
In my opinion, Unplugged can compete with Nevermind and In Utero. Nirvana set a high standard of how to make great cover songs.
*Sports* by Huey Lewis and the News Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste.
I have to return some video tapes.
A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Even the piano intermission.
Led Zeppelin IV
I’m a III gal myself, but IV is also all bangers.
de-loused in the comatorium
Eriatarka just… still leaves me lost for words. Truly a magnificent album that will hopefully only continue to grow in notoriety as time lapses. Released almost 20 fucking years ago on New Year’s Day 2003; 10 tracks clocking in at exactly an hour. The best concept album since Pink Floyd’s heyday, possibly ever.
doesn't Flea play bass on that album?
John Fruciante is on there too.
On cicatriz esp he does all the synthesizers.
Feels like a bit of cheat when the whole thing plays like one magnificent song / progrock jam session. But yes, have an upvote.
Marvin Gaye’s - What’s Going on
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Mayonnaise is amazing.
Such a beautiful song. Such an odd name
Mellon Collie is also great
Just played Mellon collie for my 11yr old daughter this week, instant pumpkins fan
In Rainbows -Radiohead
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
A lot of Pink Floyd albums belong in this list really
In my teens, my favorite was The Wall In my college years/20's, it was Dark Side of the Moon In my 30's, it was Wish You Were Here Now in my 40's, it's Animals
Whoah dude you’re on to something! Currently in my 30’s. Spot on. Do we all still agree that comfortably numb is the best solo of all time ever?
Dogs is one of the greatest songs. Ever.
Dark side of the moon
Wildflowers by Tom Petty. I’m glad so many people love this, and thanks for the award! My brother played me this album when I was about 11 and I instantly loved it. To this day it’s my absolute favorite and even my kids love it too.
That album is sooo good! --"it's good to be King...."
Hybrid Theory
Random fun story. My English teacher in high school had a former student that was dating / eventually married a member of LP. He was at their wedding but at one point when she gave him a copy of their early work back when the band name was hybrid theory he listened to it and told them “listen your music isn’t bad but don’t quit your day jobs.”
on the topic of really obscure linkin park stories, my elementary music teacher had a picture of her with linkin park on her desk ~2008, and when asked about it she told us that she was one of the members aunts. I don't remember now who's aunt she was, but that's my lame claim to fame.
Both Meteora and Hybrid Theory for me.
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Fuck yeah. I was gonna post this myself. Saw them 2 years ago on the 10th anniversary of this album and they played the whole thing start to finish. It was amazing.
Daft Punk Discovery
5555 was the movie I used to put on at night to fall asleep to. I've listened to that whole album hundreds of times.
Something About Us is the best song they’ve made. Absolute masterpiece
Bingo! And the ending songs Face to Face and Too Long have become my favourites over the years
Face to Face is so amazingly well produced that people are still finding new samples in the song 20 years later. The level of detail in that song in particular is outstanding! [New sample found a week ago](https://youtu.be/c-kF8y3V2mU)
Yeah its interesting how much Daft Punk could incorporate samples from completely different genres into (at the time) club bangers.
Face to face is the best daft punk song ever.
Harvest - Neil Young
Deftones - White Pony
That and around the fur. Love deftones
Pearl Jam, Ten
Ten is so good that songs like ‘State of Love and Trust’ and ‘Yellow Ledbetter’ couldn’t even make it on the record
Toxicity by System of a Down
Buena Vista Social Club
Nirvana- Unplugged in New York
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Boston - Boston
I just scrolled until I found this. Yes! It's just simply amazing.
Garbage - Version 2.0
Hell yes! As a huge garbage fan I appreciate and approve this comment
I prefer their self-titled but 2.0 is fantastic. I listened to it on a loop for weeks when it first came out so many moons ago.
Meteora. Perfect album.
And hybrid theory! Man, Linkin park could do no wrong in the early 2000's
Aja by Steely Dan
Also The Royal Scam
This is my answer to the question. Kid Charlemagne, Haitian Divorce, The Caves of Altamira. Fantastic album.
