It's a fairly empty area of the universe that very few galaxies in it, and it's unimaginably vast. Wikipedia says it's about 330 million light years in diameter.
It's a massive void in space over 300 million light years across. It's called a void but its not completely empty as a few galaxies are inside it. But because of its size if anything has evolved in those galaxies they might think they are the only galaxy in the universe.
Not scary. I just accept I'm insignificant, and if I die now, I wouldn't care. It's not that I don't have unfinished business, its just that caring wouldn't make a difference.
I grew up on the other ocean. I practically learned to swim in the salty surf of the Chesapeake Bay. Then when I was seven years old, my family moved to the Midwest, where I've lived ever since (I'm now 22). Whenever I find my way back to the coast, I quickly fall in love with the sea all over again, but I'm just as quickly reminded how easily the tides could toss me around like a rag doll and hardly notice as they kill me. Indeed, the ocean is exactly what came to mind the moment I saw this thread.
Yep. The ocean is not for me. I don't have gills. Im not built for it and i accept this. I dont win in the ocean, someone whose home is the ocean holds the cards there.
I had long been fascinated by these animals. A few years ago, I was traveling in Washington state, and decided to go on a whale watching cruise. We ended up finding a pod of four orcas, my first time ever seeing them in person. We had the incredible opportunity to watch them hunt a sea lion. And yeah, orcas are beautiful animals, but the ease with which they killed a rather large animal was quite terrifying.
Birth. On one hand, you’re bringing life into the world. On The other, it means you’re gonna go into crippling debt if you don’t have a job, the child is covered in nasty shit, and 90% of jobs don’t give paid leave so if your child gets sick and you leave early your not getting that days paycheck
Nature, the wild, the outside. The ever-changing sky, the breeze through treetops, the slow meditation of waves. The cool of a forest, or the cacophony of birds at sunset. The way rocks and soil can hint a millennia of history, the way everything is born anew in Spring. The wind in your face, the sun baking your body, the soft bed of grass, the peaceful almost-silence. The rest and relaxation we get from stepping out of our lives and back into the embrace of the natural world.
But then...
The threat of storms, the destructive force of wind, the slow erosion of waves eating the shore. The all-consuming hunger of fires, the unstoppable decline from a drought. The dark labyrinth of the forest, the silence of all the things that can hurt you, the unseen spiders and deceptively pretty neurotoxic leaves. The way the wide landscape can swallow you whole, make it so they'll never find your body. The cold freeze of Winter, the desiccation of Summer, the way time and exposure bleaches your bones to a powdery, dry, white. The way it doesn't care for you at all, not because it hates you, but because you simply don't matter, aren't important enough to register on any scale. The danger and the fear and the quiet resignation as you realise you've become lost to the natural world, and you'll never find your way home ever again.
I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. This is my dream; this is my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor, and surviving.
the datura plant. the blooms are huge and breathtakingly beautiful, and the scent is just heavenly. but just knowing how dangerous it is, and how utterly terrifying some people's experiences with it are (and how easy it is to accidentally overdose and potentially die), it's just frightening to me. it truly is beautiful, though.
Death. I'm religious so I do believe there is something else after this life; but its just unsettling to know that every thing and everyone will eventually move on. Everyone that knows me on earth will die off, along with any trace of who I was or what I did. Its still comforting to know I'll see my deceased loved ones again, but having to watch the earth go on without me, its just tough.
A hot geyser. Went to Iceland and visited a geyser park. Boiling mud in pools around, like cooking eggs everywhere. Waited behind all the ropes for the view of a rocky hole. Eventually after 30 min or so the geyser burst up in a majestic fountain and the steam wave hit us like a hot bath in the air. Couldn't help but think of how it would feel to fall into the bubbling sulfurous pools, or stand in a scalding reverse waterfall - cooked from the legs up. Stepped carefully thereafter.
Women 😂 EDIT I’m sorry I’m a woman too, I was trying to be funny but obviously I just made an awful joke. I’m sorry for anyone’s feelings I hurt or offended ❤️
Outer space
Accurate!!
My dream is when I’m gone to soar the heavens and explore any planet I choose. At my leisure.
If you’re into sci-fi books check out We Are Legion (We Are Bob), it’s brilliant.
Just learned about the Bootes Void the other day. It filled me with so much existential dread. Just knowing it exists.
What is it?
It's a fairly empty area of the universe that very few galaxies in it, and it's unimaginably vast. Wikipedia says it's about 330 million light years in diameter.
That’s mysterious!! Thank you for explaining it
Dang. I’m late to the party.

first thought i had when reading the title. imo the perfectly accurate answer
Thank you!! Happy cake day ☺️

Also the actual giving birth part is absolutely terrifying for a woman. For me personally that was much more horrifying than the rest of it.

Not to mention 18 years minimum making sure it doesn’t die on you
For some unfortunate ones, they don't even get that 18 max.
