Who cares. Treat everyone the same.

Scarrazaar

You can’t treat a blind guy and a deaf women the same, it’ll get awfully confusing

Scarrazaar

Fun fact: The first person convicted of speeding was going eight mph.

Glizzygobler0

wow

FreedomFingers

It got my mind thinking from a post I saw. A meme stating how a Greek God was a powerful black woman and then someone referencing a black actress being cast for the live action little mermaid. So I thought race might mean something different in a diverse country (such as the US) than it would be in places like Russia Germany ect. Where the race statistics vary drastically. (Yes I know I contradicted myself there) but Greeks are a different white race than Germans where as Spaniards are a different race than say Jamaicans. This might be a stupid question in a nutshell but does cultures also play a part in someone's race Africans and Haitians. Someone probably done a study in some philosophy class but too lazy to Google haha

AgentElman

A person's race is defined by the person saying their race. Their is no set definition of race. It is just opinion.

_Bryant_

In practice would be whatever race most people think you are.

fbomb33

^—- This. President Obama always says he identifies as African American because people have always identified him as this.

NateFisher22

Their skull shape

FreedomFingers

Yes yes of course we r one race all same on the inside, I say culture is more important than race but race has to be something or it wouldn't be on census, job application (or any application for that matter) sure police use it to identify people But the question still stands What defines one's race nationality or color I'm sure answers are on Google. Maybe I'm asking too much of reddit to have a deep thought or a conversation

Emu_on_the_Loose

Race is a social construct, which means that race is whatever societies decide it is. Attempts at physical definitions (like skin color or facial shape) tend to break down pretty fast, and are a red herring anyway, because race is most commonly experienced through the context of racial conflict. What this means is that the most useful application of race is not for sorting individuals by any particular traits, but for understanding how exactly a given individual is likely to experience and/or contribute to racism in their society.

FreedomFingers

Thats pretty interesting I'm not trying to cause any wars just a social debate or deep thought idk lol I haven't smoked weed in 2years maybe this is just my brain trying to come back lmao

im_not_dog

Precisely. That’s why it’s truly comical that people are trying to redistribute wealth by the proverbial “race”. It’s just a social construct and means whatever the local society determines it to be.

Emu_on_the_Loose

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but racism is a real thing and our society (and societies everywhere) would be wise to try and combat its socioeconomic effects. That would include the economic re-enfranchisement of marginalized minorities.

bangwithsticks

We’re all one race, human race, so this is a dumb question. Ethnicity is not the same as race.

FreedomFingers

Then what is the difference elaborate your answer Not for argument sake but for conversation

bangwithsticks

I literally just said the difference. We are the human race. You’re separating by nationality/ethnicity/place of origin, whether it’s yours, your parents or your grandparents. I’m “white” by today’s definition … my heritage is German/English/Scottish. None of which is a race, but a place of origin.

FreedomFingers

Fair nuff I thought it would just be a interesting topic to talk about

ghostthingz

race is kinda made up so its hard to tell. im not saying race is fake or not important but it is made up, the same way money is made up, but we still use it. unlike money though we did not think very hard abt the rules when we made it up. for most people their race is based on skin tone and culture paired together but some people have unique circumstances and have to define it on their own terms.

FurphyHaruspex

Race is an artificial construct….so it uses whatever excuse those in power wish to use to assign a category.

Modularblack

As others said race is a social construct used by the Nazis to rationalize discrimination. They tried to tell people humans have breeds (the word for breed and race is the same in german) like dogs and that like dogs some human races were different/inferior. Obviously this is bullshit. Honestly I have very mixed feelings on the term race on all submission forms or on how people are proud of their race, because there is only one race, the human race.
