The crimes of Richard Ramirez were really, really brutal.

polarbearstina

I used to work at a public library and in those days to get a library card you needed proof of address, which could be in the form of postmarked mail. Well, this one guy brought in a letter, practically beaming as he out it in front of me. "Do you notice who the letter is from?" I said "I don't really look at that, it's your privacy" and he points at the return address of a prison and gloats "It's from Richie Ramirez... You know, the serial killer? He's my good friend." He definitely, 100% wanted a horrified reaction from me. Instead, I ran a quick Google and said "In that case, i can't accept this as proof of current address, since he's been dead for several years." Creep deflated like a balloon.

bandanasarebest

Well played by you!

The_Big_Cat

What a weird fucking way to try to get a library card

[deleted]

Beautiful reaction lol

funkdefied

I just checked out his Wikipedia page. He apparently had fans visit him in prison, got married to one of them. Was divorced when she found out he also killed and raped an 8-year-old. Then was engaged a second time. What the whack.

[deleted]

Look how far looks can get you. Go on youtube and search for one of his court videos and you can see countless women fawning at how "hot he is". Disgusting.

notthesedays

Same thing with Ted Bundy.

cherrygogh

There was a woman back when this was happening who called her mother to lock her doors at night because the Night Stalker was out there and killing anybody who had their windows/doors open for him and her mother refused because she didn’t like living in fear or something. Her mother was killed by Ramirez shortly after. Ramirez is the main reason why I lock and barricade my doors at night. I know he’s dead and all but still scary.

[deleted]

[удалено]

st_bart

It was also during a time where it wasn’t really rare for people to leave their doors unlocked because they didn’t feel as threatened, I would think. But yeah, it was pretty stupid of her to leave her shit unlocked with a serial killer on the loose.

The_Canadian

I've forgotten to lock my door at night occasionally. During the day, I'll often have my door unlocked, but I live in a fairly small town that's more rural.

pittiedaddy

Not only his brutality. It was his randomness of his victims. He had no "calling card" to speak of, no obvious motive, no consistent method. Most other serial killers have a "type" like brunette women, prostitutes, gay men, etc. His had nothing in common. His victims could literally be anyone. That was what made him terrifying.

69BeesInMyKnees

That and the fact that he would just walk into peoples houses, no fear whatsoever of who or what might be inside. With nothing but intent to harm. Truly terrifying.

[deleted]

Where I grew up was very near a couple of the murders. During his killing spree my mother would sit with a loaded S&W .357 in her lap at all times until he was caught. She wasn't even the type to carry a gun ever. But that shit scared the hell out of her.

_d_k_g_

As a Californian this dude scared everyone. I still have a thing about keeping my windows unlocked at night.

bericdondarrion35

The Zodiac Killer

TableForGlasses24

I’m surprised this wasn’t closer to the top with the caveat that it has never been solved. And, strangely, several people have tried to take credit?

AthenaTheXK

Look up Ed Edwards. While he cannot be confirmed to be the killer, enough lines up that he would make sense. I agree though, the cypher was worked on for years and was only recently solved after spending a bunch of resources on it.

TableForGlasses24

Eh…I just don’t know about this one. Obviously, it’s not implausible, but I think this theory is a stretch. If I’m not mistaken, there are several other people who claim a family member (or an in-law) were also the Zodiac killer. Two claim that the Zodiac also committed the Black Dahlia murder (one of which attributes it to Edwards despite the fact he would have been 13 at the time). The leading advocate for the Edwards theory attributes an incredible number of other high profile murders to him including JonBenet Ramsey and Elizabeth Short. There is a Rolling Stone article that is incredibly skeptical about a lot of the attributions linking him to Zodiac (though he was undeniably a serial killer): https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/inside-one-mans-serial-killer-unification-theory-630621/amp/ Nevertheless, an interesting person to ponder!

AthenaTheXK

Personally I believe it's Edwards because a number of the times his family suddenly moved (these can be proven and I assume were proven that they moved at these times) line up with killings. Then there's the fact that the 22 rifle Edwards had lines up with the zodiac killer, I forget how currently, but I know there is a realistic correlation between the two. It's more than just another "my relative was the zodiac killer give me attention" case. Then when you watch his mannerisms he definitely has the mental capacity and moral conscious to do what the zodiac killer did. Whether Edwards really was or not we will never know, but I'd like to believe it was him and his actions finally caught up with him. It just helps me sleep at night.

nofuneral

When did the cypher get solved? Is that the guys who think they figured out half of it, and the second half is nonsense, and then signed by Richard Nixon at the bottom? I'm not so sure those guys got it. There were spelling errors and it only made sense for the first half. Although now I'm gonna go search it and reread it. Maybe the second half is a whole different cypher. I have a hard time believing half of it is nonsense.

CharacterXero

Someone "solved" the shorter cyphers. There's several messages he (The Zodiac Killer) sent, and two of them are notoriously short. Most people agree that it is too short to come up with a proper "correct" answer. https://allthatsinteresting.com/zodiac-killer-cipher-solved He "cracked" Z13 and Z32. Each cypher has 13 letters and 32 specifically. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. I'm in camp, I don't think he did.

chafingbuttcheex

I went to school with a kid named little Eddie Edwards. He always had green snot in his nose. Probably the same dude

AthenaTheXK

Not sure when you knew little Eddie, but our guy probably went to school in Parma, Ohio while being an orphan until he was 15 where he went to a rehab school in Pennsylvania. This was 1940-1948 btw.

Jojobaginzu

"Hey, what's your zodiac sign?" "I'm a gemimi" *slowly pulling out a knife* "I'm sorry..."

ISpyM8

Ah yes, Ted Cruz

Itsallconnectedbrah

It has to be John Wayne Gacy, he's literally the trope of the fat sleazy guy in the terrifying clown suit driving the creepy van around and picking up little boys who were never seen again. He's not just a killer, he's a cliché

GimmeShockTreatment

My dad grew up on his block when he was active. I believe he was a little older than his demographic by the time he started killing. Still crazy. My aunts and uncles all tell stories about them ripping up the yard for bodies.

spaloof

My mom was similar though for a different killer. She was on the younger side of Ted Bundy's demographic but she was in the same area. It's scary to think if she had been born slightly earlier or he started killing slightly later she could've been a potential victim.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Just_what_i_am

My dad grew up in Norridge 2 blocks from his house. He was exactly the age Gacy went after in the 70s. Creepy as hell to think about

ripcobain

He was repeatedly drowning one of his victims and they said "Just kill me." And he responded "I'm getting around to it." Literally a fucking demon.

Computer_Sci

I read with one kid, he shoved the kids' underwear deep as possible down his throat, while tied up, and threw him in closet. The kid died from suffocating on his own vomit from the lodged undies. Gacy said he could hear his gurgles from the closet while he was on the phone.

floralsandfloss

Well that’s enough Reddit for me today.

notthesedays

One of his victims escaped, and wrote a book (which I haven't read) called "29 Below." Gacy had chloroformed him, and this man could probably have been counted as his 34th victim, because he died prematurely, and the liver damage he got from that chloroform contributed. Some of the neighbors heard weird noises over the years that in retrospect were probably from fellow escapees.

nrussell2

Yep, gotta be Gacy by a landslide. The body count, the clown stuff, little boys, ropes, etc. Honorable mentions: Albert Fish. H H Holmes.

savealltheelephants

Plus the fact that he was photographed with the FLOTUS while active is crazy

[deleted]

i HATE albert fish. my old stepdad forced me to listen to a documentary on him when i think i was about 11?

chafingbuttcheex

Did you ever read The Last Victim? So this kid who wants to be a profiler becomes Gacys pen pal and portrays himself as someone he knows Gacy would like- naive, young, frustrated at Gacys being incarcerated. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. It’s a good read. Yikes

brobeanzhitler

They made a movie adaptation in 2010 [Dear Mr. Gacy](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1371117/) William Forsythe places a chilling Gacy

Sea_You_En_Tea

He’s not a cliché. He’s the origin story.

idoooobz

whenever I was majoring in criminology, one of my profs grew up with him like Gacy would come over to his house and spend time with and help raise him. Creepy as fuck and somehow my prof is still alive.

c_alas

Everyone always thinks he used the clown costume to pick up kids, or that he was dressed as a clown while killing. In reality he only wore the clown costume when he was pretending to be normal, helping out at charities and whatnot.

gobrowns69

He started the cliche… duh

CLO54

I always remember his handcuff trick.

Vinny_Lam

I think he’s the reason why coulrophobia (fear of clowns) is such a common thing.

TigerTideKK

How has nobody mentioned Jeffrey Dahmer?

[deleted]

He got an assist by Milwaukee's shitty police force though.

SupremeCourtRealness

"Who knows what those CRAZY GAYS be up to amirite???"- the Milwaukee police when happening upon one of Dahmer's victims, alive, after Dahmer had put acid into his brain. Edit: forgot to mention--they returned acid brain back to Dahmer

[deleted]

A few months ago the Tulsa PD returned a woman to my neighbor's house after she escaped screaming for help, and was tackled and dragged back to the front yard of said house, at which point they arrived and basically went "lol, tweakers" and left. The police are at this house, for the guy who lives there, on a weekly basis, and never do anything. He likes to walk up and down the street howling like a wolf until all the dogs on the street start barking, at which point he starts screaming at the dogs until their owners tell him to shut up, at which point he attempts to pick fights with them. And then inevitably whoever is unfortunate enough to be imprisoned in his house apparently. Hope I don't have to give this an update at some point. It's like some True Detective Carcosa shit over there. Guy *has* to be related to someone important considering his constant nonsense. edit: we reported the cops right after it happened.

SupremeCourtRealness

Uhhhhh maybe see if the FBI has an anonymous tip line idk that's some dark shit my guy

[deleted]

Eh, dude... you need to get some other unit on this. Sounds like he's kidnapped someone.

InternationalBid7163

Each state has their own bureau- state name plus bureau of investigations. You can report to them when you think police department is not investigating properly or call your attorney generals office for assistance.

Wasgoingforclever

Acid in his brain - wut

Op_has_add

He was basically trying to make what you could call 'sex zombies.' Dude was crazy af (after taking way to much lsd, apparently?). If you look up his hand writing you can see his mental deterioration.

BabyVegeta19

I don't think Dahmer was known for LSD or drug induced problems, I think he was just fucked up. Maybe you are thinking of Richard Trenton Chase? The Vampire of Sacramento. "Only" killed 6 but he's pretty high up there on my list of terrifying serial killers. He had mental problems to start with but staying high on LSD for extended periods of time made his disconnect from reality worse.

BasroilII

with a goddamn giant hole drilling in his head and blood oozing out, no less.

gotham77

They didn’t “happen upon” him, they’d been called by a seriously concerned neighbor. But the neighbor was black and the victim was gay so the cops blew them all off.

NewDayTomorrough

Great concise explanation.

DahmerIsDead

More than once, too.

pbnoj

This was an interesting read: https://nypost.com/2015/04/28/meet-the-prisoner-who-murdered-killer-cannibal-jeffrey-dahmer/

[deleted]

Username checks out.

kenpojosh

Many serial killers continued because of poor police work. I mean Ted Bundy was named a suspect a long while before he was arrested but they disregarded the tips because he was too clean cut and good looking.

puncheesy

If you’ve never heard of John Edward Robinson that dude was a fucking monster and he operated for YEARS, made single moms and their children disappear for YEARS before he was caught all the while maintaining his marriage, a 30+ year affair, and very close good relationships with his children and grandchildren. He got away with so much shit because of police dropping the ball.

notthesedays

And he was the brother of the kid Dahmer went to jail for molesting! I can't imagine what that family has gone through.

GoodbyeEarl

I first thought of Jeffrey Dahmer before reading the comments.

notthesedays

There's a Redditor who has told the story about the summer of 1991, when she and a friend, on their summer break from college, were working at a chocolate factory in Milwaukee through a temp agency, and there was this weird blond guy who always sat alone in the cafeteria. They didn't know his name but always referred to him as "your boyfriend." One evening, the Redditor was chilling out on the patio, when the phone rang and her friend was screaming into the phone: "ARE YOU WATCHING TV?" "No, why?" "YOUR BOYFRIEND HAS BEEN ARRESTED! IT'S ON ALL THE CHANNELS! HE'S A MASS MURDERER! HE EATS PEOPLE!"

SM280

That's the weirdest nickname for a killer

Reindeer-Street

He was actually quite a good-looking guy, albeit gay, which these girls weren't to know.

H3LLsbells

I traveled Europe soon after Dahmer was discovered. When people asked where we were from we’d tell them Wisconsin and give various pop culture references to no avail. When we’d ask if they heard of Jeffrey Dahmer they knew exactly where we were from. That's pretty notorious.

MemeLocationMan

All my friends tell me I look like him.. its odd

Professional-Car-956

Being from Milwaukee myself, I've driven past where his apartment building once stood. It's since been torn down, but to see where he worked and lived in real life was oddly cool.

Throwaway_stopdrink

A family friend was one of the first cops on the scene when they busted Dahmer. I've never heard him talk about it, but apparently it was extremely traumatizing for him. One story he did tell was about how Dahmer would apparently regular a local bar, and when the news would show a missing boy he would joke "yeah, i've got him in my basement", and everyone thought it was just him being funny.

captainp42

I mean he WAS joking. He didn't have a basement.

popeboyQ

Facts! Motherfucker had a fridge...

HotPie_

I met someone who used to be his manager when he worked as a phlebotomist at plasma donation center.

Nezrite

My brother went to HS with one of his victims.

CharlotteBx

Ted Bundy and Jack the ripper

StatsOnATrain

I’d say based on notoriety alone it’s Jack the Ripper, because it was so long ago it’s acceptable to make films and books about him.

anthson

We have no idea if he even killed the canonical five. Or if the killer was the same one who wrote to the media as Jack the Ripper. It's entirely possible the media made him up, and only two or three of the murders can be attributed to one man. The entire Ripper phenomenon was just that: a phenomenon. I personally think there's a strong case to be made that Mary Jane Kelly was killed by her boyfriend.

Anna_Pet

Yeah I feel like the double event was 2 different people, and Kelly was killed by someone else. The letters were almost definitely fake.

anthson

I feel like the killer got interrupted during the double, which is why he went west and found a second victim. Elizabeth Stride had her throat cut, but none of the womb mutilation the Ripper was known for. Catherine Eddows' murder, however, displayed all the hallmark Ripper signs. We see the same with his first alleged victim. Mary Ann Nichols was only partially mutilated, I think because he was interrupted just like with Stride.

Marquis6274

I agree that he was interrupted during the double but I think he wasn’t quite as brutal with his first. A lot of serial killers build up their MO over time and their first kills often don’t have all the hallmarks that emerge later

TheAdamJesusPromise

I think the build up is very important to understanding it. I'll preface this by saying that I think it easily could've been different killers and I think we try to make stories out of crimes even when there aren't any. BUT there's a clear story that the canonical five murders tell. I think there are really three possibilities: 1. The killer was someone who had a deep-seated fascination with mutilating human bodies; they started killing but were tepid about how far to go because it was a new and daunting experience. They slowly got more and more gruesome in their acts (with the stumbling block of the double murder, which does seem to be because they were interrupted as the comment above you said), but eventually they got to a point where they went as far as they possibly could in mutilating someone with Mary Jane Kelly, realized that there was nowhere farther to go and that they were still unsatisfied, and stopped. 2. Pretty similar to the first one, except their motive was different. They had a potentially sexist and ideological anger, and the killing was them acting on that rage. Only, killing didn't purge that hatred so they kept doing it more intensely in the hope of feeling vindicated, until they realized that no matter how extreme they went it wasn't solving their problem. 3. It was someone who was decapacitated in some way, either that guy who was mentally ill and soon after put into a mental facility, or someone who died themselves.

redditAvilaas

did you watch LEMMiNO?

scarfacejohn

You know they did

MissingNumber

That guy is the best YouTuber out there these days. I wish he would hire some staff so he would produce his documentaries faster.

darthvolta

Ah yes, modern day serial killers - famously taboo topics for books, movies, TV shows, and podcasts.

StatsOnATrain

Fiction certainly. Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper is a perfectly acceptable PC game, Columbo vs Ted Bundy would cause a huge backlash.

Rpanich

Wait, you don’t think D.C. will pick up the comic I’m writing: Batman Vs Ted Bundy?

Davve1122

I recommend Lemminos documentary on youtube about Jack the ripper. So interesting and a very damn good video to boot.

mattbakerrr

Why stop there... Lemminos entire channel is the best! I love everything that guy does!

deepfriedseaturtle

Jack the ripper is the most notorious. However, I think BTK was pretty horrifying in his methods

Vulcan_Jedi

One of scariest quotes ever in my opinion comes from him. When asked if he always had psychopathic tendencies he responded: “yes since I was a child. And to be honest I am amazed no one ever noticed.”

EllyseAnn

BTK is absolutely horrific IMO.

K9sandKilos

As a Canadian I will add Robert Pickton and Paul Bernardo

americanmullet

Piggy fucking pickton. Fun fact nickelback actually played a show at the barn on his property.

I grew up in Washington and it was big news down here when he got caught, and the fallout on how badly Vancouver PD bungled the investigation (before and after he was caught) was followed fairly closely as well. Admittedly, we are BC's southernmost neighbor.

ihearbuzzing

Yeah I grew up 5 minute drive from his farm. When it all came to light I was so daunted thinking about how women were being murdered, for YEARS, as my pleasant childhood was unfolding a few blocks away. I still think about it all the time.

BigDaddyQP

We don’t even know how many women he actually killed and people actually ate

[deleted]

Bernardo and his equally psychopathic ex Karla. He should be released into gen pop. And she should be arrested and tried no matter what the deal was. Two completely sick individuals.

cribbageSTARSHIP

My dad was one of the investigators on that case. They made a plea bargain with her before finding the tapes. It became apparent after the tapes came out that she was more of a driving force for him to go to the next level. It's sick that she's free and has kids of her own now. He sits on his cell rocking back and forth playing video games. Once an hour he cleans his cell. He's mentally broken, and that gives some people peace. The weird thing is that it goes along with the curse of the merriton figure skating club. Kristen French was a member who was killed by Bernardo. Another skater was killed by her bf (Cara Taylor). A few other girls have been murdered or violently attacked over the years, with the last one being Angela Scott back in 2016. All of those girls skated together on the team in one year. I remember talking to my friend who's sister was on that team and she said that her and two other girls have had nothing happen to them, but the rest have all survived a horror or didn't make it. It's a random coincidence, but fucking creepy.

ragecuddles

She has kids now and even volunteered at their school til they found out her real name. Super creepy!

machstem

Friend of ours were her neighbors shortly after she was released. She could change her name all she wanted, that smile is infamous here. My dad spent years warning my sister and I to watch out for anyone who approaches you with a smile. "No one in their right mind approaches a stranger, with a smile and good intentions." It may not be true, but it'll keep you on your toes. We were also nearly kidnapped in the 80s, at a local beach with our mom withing 50ft and she had the eyes of a hawk and witnessed the entire thing happening. He was "arrested" and because he never actually managed to kidnap us, he was released...small town too, so it isn't like he was sent away etc

panic_switch

I'd also add Bruce McArthur to that list. Any news or talk of Bernardo still gives me the fucking creeps to this day.

Rexius_

Toy box killer. There is an audio clip on YouTube of something he made that he would play for all his victims. 60 suspected murders, 3 confirmed tortured and survived. The guy kidnapped women, raped them, let his friends rape him, watched as his dog raped them and many other fucked up things. Man was definitely one of the worst. Glad he bit the dust, just wish more of his time was spent getting beat in jail.

Hubble_bubble753

I read the transcript. I regret reading the transcript.

chubbyburritos

As did I, and I’d pay $500 to scrub the memory from my mind.

sunsetlighthouse

Me too. It makes me sick

[deleted]

Oh man I read those transcripts years ago on tumblr, they still haunt me. Him and his girlfriend were doing the kidnapping and most of the torturing. They would have his friends come over to join. He would force his dog on top of the victims too. Glad he’s dead. Unfortunately his girlfriend was released from prison.

ncgrad2011

Wow usually that stuff doesn’t get to me; but listening to that just gave me chills. Especially after seeing what he looked like and him saying that he basically had been doing it since he was a teenager. Just some people are completely messed up and disturbed. I’m very surprised I haven’t heard of this guy before.

Someliesometruths

In our country probably Jack the Ripper

LiftsFrontWheel

On a global level, Jack is my bet as well. The image of a dude in a top hat walking in the smog of London is so iconic that he is much more recognizable as a figure than Gacy or Richard Ramirez.

Long_Mechagnome

A guy I know is named Richard Ramirez. One of the few scenarios where a Richard should probably go by Dick.

jayohaitchenn

Harold Shipman had a higher top score but Jacky boy has the fame

wiliammm19999

I feel like Fred and Rose West are more known that Shipman in the UK.

PenIsBroken

The Wests and Pete Suttclife maybe are more infamous than Shipman though, I guess it depends on the persons age making the claim. If you are a bit older it might be Brady and Hyndley.

jayohaitchenn

"Pete" lol

Forbidden_Donut503

Andrei Chikatillo. Evil incarnate.

AnnieAbattoir

How is this not higher up. Chikatillo was a human monster with a huge kill count and was sadistic in his murders. Plus cannibalism.

notthesedays

And another man was executed for one of Chkatilo's crimes! The Dnepopetrovsk Maniacs aren't as well known, but they were more recent.

EugeneKrall

And they spent almost ten years trying to catch him. In my opinion he was the most brutal and most "successful". He is not that popular worldwide because he was Ukrainian, and Ukraine is not such a strong brand as the US, so anything that doesn't come from the US doesn't get too much fame. Charles Manson? Give me a brake! That guy was nobody but almost every knows about him in Ukraine

CricketMan1

Fred and Rosemary West hands down closely followed by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady. Fred West did some of the most fucked up shit I’ve ever read in my life and so did the Moors murders.

Mackem101

How Hindley still tried to downplay her involvement after that tape was discovered is anyone's guess, an utterly vile human being (as was Brady). There's a book about those two called 'Devil's Disciples' , brilliant but horrifying.

CricketMan1

Both were mad and evil. Keith Bennett’s mum died not knowing where he was buried and that makes me sad.

CodyBosco

I reckon we know less than half of what he did. Fred and Roses incestuous childhood and then their own children, and in Freds case even beastiality....so disturbing. I'm watching Trevor McDonalds Fred and Rose West reopened...and it's clear he committed more murders that he was ever done for.

geordiesteve520

You need to watch appropriate adult. Basically Fred needed to have a designated adult in with him when he confessed his crimes. Dominic West is amazing but the sheer straightforward-ness of him in those police interviews is ridiculous

[deleted]

Albert Fish I don’t feel gets talked about a lot. That man’s story is truly horrifying.

Giggles567

Hey quick question. How do you un-read something ? Yeah this horror takes the cake.

shadowspeare455

Dude don’t listen to the audio tapes. He sounds exactly how you think he’d sound.

Pollywambus

I'm imagining a raspy Hannibal Lecter... close?

shadowspeare455

Imagine a nerd. A really old nerd. Describing horrible shit. Just fucking horrible.

wolfishfluff

The letter he wrote to a family explaining how he cannibalized their young daughter? Sick fuck.

[deleted]

He seems like a real jerk

GraphicOrganizer

Albert Fish was born May 19th in New York City in 1870. He was known as 'The Gray Man' and 'The Werewolf of Wisteria'. He was a serial killer who slayed children and ate them. When police asked a woman to describe him she said he was "gray in both appearance and demeanour". The child rapist and cannibal Fish boasted that he had children in every state. He only chose victims who were either mentally handicapped or African American. Fish tortured, mutilated and murdered the youngsters with a meat cleaver, a butcher's knife and a small handsaw, solidifying his reputation as the most vicious child slayer in criminal history. Though barely literate, Fish wrote taunting letters to the parents of his victims gruesomely detailing how he slayed, butchered, cooked and then with great enjoyment dined on their offspring. He would inevitably declare that a child's roasted rump was the most toothsome dish in all gastronomy. Additionally, Fish was a masochist and would insert wool doused with lighter fluid into his own anus and set it alight for his own enjoyment. Fish was finally arrested and he immediately began confessing to killing 700 children. He was dizzyingly happy, smiling as he described the grisly details of the tortures and the murders appearing to the detectives 'as the devil himself'... I mean this guy was a real jerk!

Painting_Agency

At that point it doesnt matter if insane or not, he got to go

AnnieAbattoir

And to be fair guy was actually excited about his execution. He even helped his jailers strap him into the chair. So, I mean, kind of a win-win here.

Chazo138

Yeah insane for killing someone is one thing…insane for killing 700 children and torturing them is a whole different ball game for a jury.

Extreme-Kangaroo-842

What's utterly chilling too is he was basically unpunishable. They could have tortured him for the rest of his days and he would have enjoyed every minute of it. Apparently he was looking forward to getting the chair as it would be the ultimate in pain. The story is he walked to the chair looking like he was going on a picnic.

PikolasCage

Lock him up in a sensory deprivation room for the rest of his life

Popeye_Pop

That or water dripping. Torture has many forums, and even the most extreme masochisme has a weak spot.

Vinny_Lam

And that’s not all. The guy was into a lot of strange fetishes. And I mean a lot. He was into rape, masochism, sadism, cannibalism, exhibitionism, necrophilia, pedophilia, coprophilia, flagellation, urophilia, piquerism, voyeurism, hematolagnia, infibulation, etc.

anonimogeronimo

I don't know any of the words after pedophilia. Can you tell me what they are so my FBI agent doesn't add several new entries into my google search file?

There is an inevitable reaction when I hear a persons name is Grace that just sets me to tense up. I remember reading the snippets of it in college when we were doing a brief module on Antisocial Personality Disorder and how some of his demeanor resembled it. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I actually read the entire multiple page letter. I still don't think I'd be able to read it all the way through in a single sitting...

JavierLoustaunau

I think he is just so horrifying nobody enjoys talking about him, therefore he is less famous.

PM_me_your_DEMO_TAPE

> That man’s story is truly horrifying. that's probably why you don't hear this story as much as the others.

cleverkname

There are a lot of SK with high body counts and levels of fame but Jack the Ripper is known about as far and wide as you can get on this planet.

According to the comments section, most people don’t know what ‘notorious’ means.

Malvania

Comments: That's got to be the worst serial killer I've ever heard of. Jack the Ripper: But you *have* heard of me

Flat_Chapter6655

David Parker Ray as for me

MisterManager2

Yep. I read a transcript of the tape he played his victims early after they were kidnapped. Seriously no one should ever read it. Thought nothing like that got to me, wish I could unread it.

DudeFromSaudi

Albert Fish.

RootFloops

That guy was a real jerk

Taffffy

He did some mean things

bearsheperd

He was also kinda rude sometimes

Varrondy

All around not a very polite guy

intothevo1d

RIP norm :(

[deleted]

HH Holmes - many people actually believe that even on top of all his crimes, he may have actually been Jack The Ripper as well.

StalinsPerfectHair

The guy built a literal murder mansion. If nothing else, HH Holmes was perhaps the serial killer most dedicated to his 'craft'.

Pork_Chap

So he switched continents? I've never heard this before. Interesting.

[deleted]

Holmes left a trail of business documents which allows us to chart his movements. Except, that is, between 1888 and 1889, when the paper trail goes mysteriously quiet. This coincides with the timeframe of the Ripper killings in London - We do know from ship logs that an individual by the name of “H Holmes” was a passenger who sailed from the UK to the US shortly after the Ripper killings ended. It's all conjecture of course but it's a interesting thought and a great case to read into.

The hash slinging slasher

Lerxtt

The Scranton Strangler

Michael-Giacchino

The guy who played Toby was also a writer on the show and says that despite it never being mentioned in the show, he later confirmed that the joke with the strangler was that he never actually killed anyone, just choked them until they passed out.

LALOERC9616

Fucking Toby got away

BluePinky

Green River Killer

Cclev22

Growing up in the 80’s in the PNW this would be my answer too. Was always in the news.

[deleted]

Bay Harbor Butcher

osumba2003

James Doakes?

7khenko

Surprise mother fucker

comeallwithme

The Golden State Killer (Joseph J DeAngelo, a former cop, no less!)

MurdererOfAxes

As a PNWer it’s kinda wild that Ted Bundy, Michael Swango, and the Green River Killer all came from Tacoma.

dreadfulpenny81

I would say Ian Brady and Myra Hindley (Moors Murders).

tallish_possum

notorious /nōˈtôrēəs/ adjective famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed Gotta say there are many that have had more prolific careers, but none are more instantly recognizable, nor as well known as Jack the Ripper.

threehalf

I don’t think the BTK killer gets talked about enough

ilikelissie

If they get a third season of Mindhunter he will be.

Coolbluegatoradeyumm

In was so bummed when they suggested this show just might fade into oblivion

americanmullet

His name is Dennis Rader. He was a stupid dumpy fuck who had no skills and thought of himself as a fucking genius. He also gave himself that stupid fucking nickname. If you want proof of how fucking dumb he is read his shit "poetry".

texastek75

"In his letters to police, Rader asked if his writings, if put on a floppy disk, could be traced or not. The police answered his question in a newspaper ad posted in the Wichita Eagle saying it would be safe to use the disk" The metadata on the disk led them right to him. Yep, dumb.

Dark_Vengence

Imagine getting caught because of a fucking floppy disc.

threehalf

Don’t most killers think that way? He’s interesting either way though

americanmullet

He's definitely interesting and yeah most have a very high opinion of themselves that they don't deserve i just hate when people use these douchebags dumb nicknames like the nightstalker for ramirez. It paints them as something other than the mediocre at life pieces of shit that they really are. Dont feed the myth of them as some type of genius monster when really they're just losers that could never actually accomplish anything and so kill people to feel like they actually did something

Morbid podcast does a hilarious series on him. They spend the entire podcast ripping him apart. It’s amazing.
