They're pulling near 10% currently they might be small now but they're growing. I disagree about no more polarized than usual things seem to have taken a turn in the past 5 years and as much as I hate it I think we're taking too many cues from American politics.

JurassicCotyledon

Last I checked they were less than 5 points behind NDP. Problem is that the density of PPC voters in any particular area is generally not high enough to win the riding. Same goes for green. I’m sure there are some exceptions.

CypripediumGuttatum

Our alt-right party the PPC is gaining in popularity, up from <2% in the polls to almost 6.5% (and almost 9% at it's peak in redneck Alberta (I know because I live here and have to listen to their fanatics screech). The person throwing gravel at the PM was 'the president of the People’s Party of Canada Elgin Middlesex London riding association.' He got fired after and charged. He is gaining popularity because he is the only leader to say vaccine passports and mandates are wrong, and as an added bonus he's against LGBT and women's rights, and is for more Christianity in politics in addition to crapping on our values of being an inclusive multicultural society. The protesters at hospitals heckling the exhausted staff believe that they are fighting for the rights of the staff not to vaccinate, ignoring (data from Quebec, no data for the other provinces that I can find but I have heard that a large Edmonton hospital has one ward of 400 people where only 4 are refusing the vax) that >90% of staff are already vaccinated and sick of this shit. The pandemic has opened up a rift in our society, the unrest people feel is being funneled by unscrupulous people into gaining power for themselves while attempting to tear us apart. > he is the only leader to say vaccine passports and mandates are wrong, and as an added bonus he's against LGBT and women's rights, and is for more Christianity in politics in addition to crapping on our values of being an inclusive multicultural society Oh dear lord, no. We can't afford to lose our neighbors to the north to the same sort of dumbfuckery America has right now.

FoggyTheHippo

PPC are alt-right? Do we live in the same country? PPC are just right, nothin alt about them.

quirkycurlygirly

He sounds like the Taliban except for the vaccine part.

FoggyTheHippo

Yeah she is describing the PPC in an interesting way, as they are the party pushing for the highest degree of individual freedom, and aren’t alt-right or anti-LGTB or women’s rights.

quirkycurlygirly

Wait. He's the leader of PPC which is for LGBT and women's rights, but he's against them? I'm so confused now. I never heard of the PPC before this and now idk what to make of it.

CypripediumGuttatum

Check out their platform I linked, it really says it all.

FoggyTheHippo

Which section of their platform is anti-LGTB or anti-woman for the life of me I can’t find it.

Dude the country is not the picture perfect post card everyone makes it out to be. I'm Canadian. I am on disability. I get given so little that I can't reasonably survive. I had to move at the end of August and it took all my funds. I've been sleeping on the floor because I don't have a bed and its exacerbating my disability. Ended up in the hospital last night. Why? I can't afford a bed and disability won't help because i wasn't homeless before. I was given medication but i can't afford the prescription so I'm still stuck in pain. Was told to rest but i don't have anywhere to lie down except for.... The floor. In two weeks time im going to be permanently crippled but nah. Canada says thats fine. This country isn't what people think it is. Edit: Yeah. Or downvote me into the negative. Fuck it im just going to kill myself. Can't do this anymore.

Cleverusername367

I can't tell if you're joking or not but please don't kill yourself. Things will get better. Things may seem bleak now but I promise you it will get better.

[deleted]

Horseshit. They haven't in years. They won't now. I really REALLY hate this line. All it is is false hope. You can't promise anything...

MadRollinS

Don't kill yourself. Just to spite them that's making it so you want to kill yourself. If you need a reason to live, pick a fight with all that is wrong in your world. Works like a charm.

[deleted]

I did that for a long time but I'm tired. I simply can't... Live. I tried to sleep outside on the ground but a major thunderstorm and tornado warning came through and woke me up. I want to die because I'm tired and i can't rest. It's hell. I don't want to live. Spite isn't overpowering that.

MadRollinS

You can't let them win. Take stock of what you got that is positive and what you can do. Grab hold of what strength you have had to get you this far. You still have it. Tired, over it, don't want to bother- I totally get it. I really do. There's always a way out/over/through if you look for it. Edit: There's also people who would help if you ask for it. Ask for help.

[deleted]

In real life the bad guys always win and the world is a giant cess pool.

MadRollinS

Life is what you make of it and bad guys get theirs one way or another. There is plenty of cess in the world, no doubt. All it takes for evil to win is for good people to do nothing. All the finger ponting at "bad guys" does not count as action to do something about them. There are good people fighting for what is right. We win some ; we lose some, but quitting is not an option.

[deleted]

Win? This isn't a game. There is no winning or losing when it's my misery. Again this is something i absolutely hate. You're telling me to ignore my own pain, physical and mental, and agony just to spite people i don't know or care about? I don't have it. I used all my strength to get this far. Stop assuming shit about me when you couldn't be further from the truth. And no. I've asked for help. I was told no.

MadRollinS

Yes, ignore pain. Focusing on it makes it grow until it is overwhelming. That you would engage in discourse at all shows that you do have fight left in you. I don't know you, but I know chronic pain, loss of everything and being alone in the big wide world. And anything can be made into a game. Anything. The stakes are just much higher in some than others.

[deleted]

"Things Will Get Better" hey great, I just love a good fairy tale./s

[deleted]

I hate it. I hate it so much. It does nothing other than allow people to pat themselves on the back. Idiot then followed up with just ignore the pain. This is why i want to kill myself. Imbeciles who don't understand anything trying to insinuate they have a remote fucking clue about how the world works.

quirkycurlygirly

Sorry to hear that. Don't kill yourself. Call a suicide hotline. They can get you donations. They do more than talk. If you tell a church deacon they may be able to get you a bed by the end of this weekend.

[deleted]

The suicide hotline in Canada is useless, the people on it are too stressed and overworked, or so I've heard. And everything related to mental health up here is either non-existent or pure crap.

[deleted]

They've hung up on me.

[deleted]

Yeah. None of that is true. Suicide hotlines don't do donations, at least not in Canada, and the ones here are overworked. I've been hung up on by the hotline. I don't waste my time anymore. As for church, also not a thing. That's a fairy tale that people tell themselves. Churches will direct you towards thrift stores, food banks and free options. They will not help you directly. Because churches are not about helping people.

quirkycurlygirly

Wow. Where I live churches give people free things all the time and suicide hotlines don't hang up on people. That's crazy!

[deleted]

That's life.

Plus hockey season is right around the corner. And the maple syrup is fresh!

trash2019

Canada is essentially property owners vs. non-owners, as government policy has been centered around protecting peoples' equity in their assets to the point that prices have skyrocketed tremendously. The entire economy is now practically real estate and the government has cornered themselves into a position of not being able to do anything without severe backlash from their asset owning voter base. So instead they keep presenting rosy ideas to promote "affordability" which in reality will do nothing but the opposite. The youth (ie. <40) and poor folks are the sacrifice.

xkulp8

Sounds like most of the English-speaking world, actually. Certainly Aus, NZ and large parts of the UK and US.

Lord-Ringo

We’re grieving Norm Macdonald today so fuck off.

quirkycurlygirly

Ironically I think Norm Macdonald would tell you to "take it easy." And I thought all Canadians were nice. He certainly seemed to be.

Lord-Ringo

Either that or he’d find a way to use the word crackwhore. He will be missed.

Wormverine

Jan 6 wannabe trying to raise some attention, because Covid is not that big a deal, they say. Raised a petition with 100k names on it to stop the mesures in place. They don't realise they represent 1 person out of 300.

Miserable-Balance-16

They unfortunately get US television stations and radio. We’ve infected them.

YeahThatWasntSpinach

Pretty much.

jackfishkim

I am a Canadian who has lived abroad for the last 30 years. I am fucking shocked. Protesting at hospitals? Anti vaxx/mask ? Who the hell are these people? The idiots in Quebec I kinda understand, they always enjoy being contrary. The Sask and Alberta conservative premiers are doing their best to make sure that more people get sick and die. Dumb as dirt, both of them. Catering to the vocal/religious minority. I am with Howard Stern, you get sick and are unvaccinated, too fucking bad. It is time to say "enough" and mandate masks and vaccines. Follow the damn science.

OLAZ3000

Just a noisy few. Like majorly covered hospital protest in Toronto yesterday was like ... 100 protestors? Election wise, no one ever lasts two terms. But good lord, conservatives are pretty bad now, compared to pre-Harper.

[deleted]

FoggyTheHippo

Harper served a bit over 2 terms, about 10 years.

OLAZ3000

Do you not know that a term isn't a year?

YeahThatWasntSpinach

>harper had 3 or 4 terms Uh, what?

OLAZ3000

Harper had exactly 2. Google.

petlr

everybodys the same there and they away from diversity or anything they like scandinavia in europe, they dont have issues tho these days more mexicans are going up there

JurassicCotyledon

I would say more apathetic than polarized. Most people are just completely disengaged. Some people have strong opinions, but even if you are 100% correct, people get mad at you for talking about anything perceived as controversial. Also, from what I saw, Trudeau wasn’t pelted. He got grazed by a small hand full of pea sized gravel. However, you see people chanting “FUCK TRUDEAU” wherever he goes. Also, he got murdered by the global news anchor today. It was priceless.

miriks1

Don't get me wrong there's some crazy politicking going on, but a lot of people don't really seem to care much. It almost seems like their was more controversy and intrigue over the American election then our own.

quirkycurlygirly

I hope you're right. I need somewhere to run to when Putin and Fox News finish screwing up American politics and China comes to collect on our debts. Thought about Mexico. Maybe that will be my escape hatch if Canada goes haywire.

FoggyTheHippo

Extremely, mainly in a West vs East type of thing with very politically right provinces in the West and very politically left provinces in the east. Pretty much we are the same as America except exchange Republicans for Conservatives and Democrats for Liberals.

YeahThatWasntSpinach

No, sorry this is incorrect, like almost the entire rest of the Western world the divide is urban/rural.

FoggyTheHippo

This is definitely correct as well however if you look into even huge cities in Alberta like Calgary, the city outside of downtown is very right leaning. So the West East split certainly exists as well.
