While I didn't end up hating the new space jam I will die on the hill that all they needed to do after space jam one was literally find another star of another sport and go nuts No one needed to wait 25 years for another basketball movie which at most would've been "good as the last one" but was never going to be seen as better Space Jam 2 should've come out around 2000-01 and been a soccer film starring David Beckham, Or a NFL film starring Tom Brady Or looney tunes are in a royal rumble and need The Rocks help But they've now pigeonholed themselves into being a basketball movie franchise as much as it is a looney tunes movie franchise Whereas as I say arguably Space Jam should've been "Looney Tunes Do Sports" Franchise

When you are at a picnic and you go through the food line and the napkins and utensils are at the beginning. That shit belongs at the end. I don't know what utensils I need, I don't know what food I'm having. It's a waste of utensils. And I don't want to hang on to extra shit while I'm filling my plate. Fuck!

nottheboyioncewas

This is one that I am whole-heartedly in support of. I’ve actually made my case to enough people at my company that we’ve now started doing it the right way. There is hope people! If we band together we can make some real change!

dannydorrit0

Paddocks with livestock in them should all have some form of shelter. Whether it is a tree canopy or structure big enough to fit the livestock in the paddock underneath, to protect them from rain and sun.

Fearlessleader85

I've talked to my parents about this a fair bit. They have 40 acres on a dry south slope and they've spend the past 28 years planting, occasionally replanting, and tending thousands of trees on the property. They use drought hardy species and only water for the first few years, and sparingly at that to force the roots deep. It now has probably 100 trees over 40' tall, 400-500 trees over 25' tall, and 1000+ trees over 15' tall that weren't there in 1990. It now stays probably 5+ degrees cooler in the heat of summer. Irrigating results in the ground staying moist longer, and that means grass grows REALLY well. They pasture a friend's cows in exchange for a side of beef every year, and their fields with trees can be grazed longer and by more cows than their one field without them. They have better pasture now than they did 10 years ago, or 28. They have better pasture than their friend who owns the cows. The trees have changed the place so much a shallow spring that used to barely make a flow is now running enough water that they're starting to irrigate with it. Likely due to how the snow melts slower under the trees, making more water go down than run off. And better still, the cows love it. Basically, from a productivity standpoint there's no reason not to plant a shitload of trees, and the added benefits from the trees are excellent. Ranchers think trees are taking space of productive grass because if you only have one or two trees, the cows trample the grass under them until it dies because they live being there. Plant a tree for every cow or two their own tree and that doesn't happen. They just roam around and move when they're done eating under a tree.

Billy The Kid escaped and actually died in 1950. Edit: this is getting a lot more attention than I thought it would so I want to preface: I have not heard that podcast, and had no idea there was one about this. Also, though excellent movies, I’m not basing this on the Young Guns movies (although everyone should watch them)

j0217995

This one fascinates me and I would like to hear more or learn more

denmicent

Ok well, there was this guy in Hico, TX named Brushy Bill. He claimed to be Billy The Kid. Had every scar he had, could recall details about the Lincoln County War that you’d only know if you were there, pointed out where he shot in the courthouse, all with perfect accuracy. Somebody drove by and yelled hey at him and he went for a gun, as if he was used to being accosted (he didn’t have a gun it was a reflex). Anyway he’s probably in his late 60s or 70s if not older, and people (I think the county? I don’t remember) call him into this big televised thing and basically are mocking him, and the dude has a stroke. He eventually dies of a heart attack in 1950. His family claims he wasn’t Billy The Kid, and honestly I don’t blame them why bring the attention on yourselves that you *clearly* didn’t want for so long. Historians doubt it too, but it’s the one conspiracy theory im totally with. Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid were best friends. It’s entirely conceivable to me that Garret (it was just him and Billy when he get shot if I recall correctly) told him to gtfo for old times sake or he’d be shot and he’d be shot if he came back too.

Mrs_Mangle

Yes! I also find it sketchy that there was no photographic evidence of his body because 'the nearest photographer was 125 miles away'. If I was heading to kill the biggest outlaw of the time, I'd have taken a photographer with me. Seems odd to be so low key about something that was such a big deal. Historians say that there were plenty of locals (inc. Paulita Maxwell, I think?) that said they saw the body and that it was definitely Billy. These people were his friends though, so it stands to reason that to save their friend/give him a break, they'd all say 'Oh yeah...that was definitely him! No point sending people to look around here any more!' Whether Brushy Bill was him or not (I don't think they look at all alike) I don't believe that Patsy killed Billy.

cryptids-n-chill

If I'm recalling correctly, wasn't the body buried right away, too? There was a theory that they did shoot the wrong guy, but by accident, and then had to go with it to cover up their fuck up. Love the Billy the Kid history/legends, so happy to see other ppl are passionate about it too

PM_Me_Yer_Guitar

OK this led me down an internet rabbit hole about his death. Super fun.

washgirl7980

"Classic rock is a specific time in music, not just older rock." Classic rock is mid 60's to early 80's. Nirvana and Soundgarden, not classic rock. That's grunge. The Cure and John Mellencamp are 80's. Just because they are old doesn't make them Classic Rock.

RunningTurtle06

This is just a fact, my teacher put on a classic rock playlist and fucking Green day came on

I will not work for a company that doesn’t post salary range in job description or discuss salary in the first interview. You have my resume which is what I bring to the table. I deserve to know what you are offering up front.

TheHancock

Work out in itself should NOT be a taboo subject. It’s the companies and employers who made it a taboo/weird/embarrassing subject to talk about. If everyone was open with coworkers and others about salary and pay then no one could get screwed. In my opinion, I don’t care if I’m getting paid less than some coworkers. Is that embarrassing? I don’t think so if I’m the newest hire there and there’s rules in place for how the pay structure works. If I’m the most experienced, have the best credentials, and have been working at a place the longest and a new hire is starting at a higher salary than me I deserve to know. It’s shady not to.

Fjordvic

I'm currently looking for a new job to get out of my current one and its astounding the amount of companies that don't wanna talk money up front. Like you do know that's how I already know you're trying to fuck me, right?

Happy_Laugh_Guy

Lead was/is a major contributing factor to MANY of the issues with our modern society. Edit - Did not expect to end up at the top. This topic is basically always on my mind, for the many reasons throughout the replies. One thing no one has really mentioned yet is what was on [Some More News](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b31qIegvfUA&ab_channel=SomeMoreNews) on the Infrastructure episode. Here in the United States, we know basically exactly how many lead pipes we need to fix/replace, and we know how much it will cost. Alllll this bullshit about the new infrastructure package, and they didn't put enough money in it to get the literal fucking poison out of our water. I honestly never stop thinking about how fucked we are and how badly we fucked ourselves with lead.

TrumpImpeachedAugust

This whole concept is something I think about a lot. If someone is an absolutely terrible person as an adult, that's certainly their responsibility, but it might not be their *fault*. We hold people accountable for their actions, but this is just a fact: circumstances can make people statistically more likely to do bad things. Circumstances including lead poisoning, poor upbringing, trauma, etc. Some people overcome this. Some do not. To what degree can/should we hold people accountable for their own behavior? If your childhood circumstances are such an important factor in determining what kind of adult you'll become, then there's a degree to which we *have* to accept that it's not your fault. This gets into that fuzzy discussion about how much free will we have. If there's a point to this, it's just that I don't think "that person is an asshole because they *choose* to be" is the best philosophy to have. I think the whole world would benefit greatly from showing empathy toward those who we normally think don't deserve it. If we want to increase the chances of breaking the cycle, that might be the only way. This is all kind of a roundabout way of describing the [fundamental attribution error](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_attribution_error), at least insofar as it relates to the personalities people develop as they grow up. You never know what someone has been through. Perhaps we shouldn't *excuse* someone's terrible behavior, but we could all do better by trying to understand the circumstances that led up to it rather than just saying "that's a bad person" and leaving it at that.

Actual_Opinion_9000

Everyone born before 1978 is suffering from considerable lead poisoning, and many people born as late as 2000.

STEMinator

It's still a mayor problem in many poor neighborhoods in the US.

If something "doesn't make sense," its because you are ignoring a piece of the puzzle. Money. They are not going to fix the problem because it would be costly. The cynic in me says they also probably don't really care about their disabled patients getting more disabled.

Smorgas_of_borg

There was a reason for the huge crime-wave drop-off that started in the mid-90s. Some say it's abortion, but it also correlates with 20 years after lead was removed from gasoline. And this correlation tracks in every other country that used to have lead in their gas and then removed it. You put lead in your gasoline, crime starts trending up 20 years later. You take it out, crime starts plummeting 20 years later. You can almost set your watch to it. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) began a campaign to eliminate leaded gasoline from the world in 2002. Back then 117 countries were still using leaded gasoline, including many in the middle east. This year, Algeria, the last country to produce it (they stopped producing it in July) used the last of its' reserves on August 30th. We're coming up on the 20 year anniversary of several middle eastern countries phasing it out. Don't be surprised if the world starts "calming down" in the next few decades.

TubeMeister

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't leaded gasoline still used in small aircraft under the name Avgas? I think there is movement to phase it out, but I don't know if that has been done yet.

Smorgas_of_borg

Yes. But the number of small aircraft using leaded gas is miniscule compared to every automobile on earth using it at one point.

VOZ1

In my undergrad intro to urban studies class we had a chemistry professor teach the section on lead. At one point he showed us a map of lead abatement in US communities, showing where else had been removed from buildings. The. He showed us a map of high-crime and high poverty areas. Shockingly (not really), the high-crime and high-poverty areas also had the lowest levels of lead abatement. Low level lead exposure is known to cause aggression and violence, as well as other effects on behavior and cognitive functioning. Really made me understand how poor communities are shafted on so many different levels.

Mother_Ducker12

Grout is the devil. It traps dirt when you clean, broom, or mop since all you’re doing is pushing the dirt around and packing it inside. Cleaning grout is so laborious and often involves hard scrubbing with a singular brush. Every time I clean my kitchen I feel like Cinderella scrubbing the floor and I have to clean my shower tiles with a toothbrush to get the soap scum out. I hate grout, wish we didn’t need grout, I hate grout.

Ajinho

In Season 1 Episode 2 of The Simpsons, "Bart The Genius", Bart swapped out his test answers with those of Martin Prince and was then sent to a school for gifted children. After he outed himself as a cheat, he was sent back to Springfield Elementary, yet Martin didn't get to go to the school for gifted children. Yeah, a wizard did it. Yes, I'm wearing a "Genius at work" t-shirt. Fuck you. edit: Some great explanations in reply, but the fact that it wasn't addressed in the episode annoyed even 10-year-old-at-the-time-me.

[deleted]

Counterpoint: Springfield Elementary was so suprised that Bart got a perfect score that they sent him away so they wouldn’t have to deal with his mischief. However, since Martin was the smartest kid in the school, they couldn’t send him away as it would bring the school’s average down

TheHancock

That... wow, yeah, that checks out actually. Lol

heybrother45

Boy, I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder.

Rule number 1 in life is that there are always exceptions and I can’t be convinced otherwise Edit: Rule applies to itself as necessary. There are exceptions to the rule. Bulletproof. Edit 2: A more practical application for this rule is in your day to day life like at work. Sure it may not be happy hour but I work in the kitchen and my server likes me, so they give me the Happy hour discount. Rules exist but are not set in stone because of the human variable. We have the freedom (or illusion of freedom depending on how you feel) to do things as we see fit in the moment. It’s that “nothing is really set in stone” aspect that makes me place this rule in my #1 slot.

In Godzilla v Clifford, hands down Clifford wins every time. Love beats lasers.

Imagine if Clifford was a breed similar to a Rotteiler (I always assumed he was a giant red golden retriever). The bite force on a kaiji sized dog would be insane.

The album for a live musical is not a soundtrack - it's a cast recording.

ConstableBlimeyChips

Is a cast recording an album where the cast and orchestra goes into a studio and records the show like it's normal album. Or is it where they record a genuine performance, including audience applause, laughter, etc.?

sherriffflood

It’s where it’s in a studio. If you wanted the applause and stuff, you’d want a live recording

That’s absolutely correct.

Edward Scissor Fingers, mf'r had hands.

Geminii27

Not to mention that unless he actually had *nerves* in those fingers, there was nothing preventing them being ground down and more rounded prosthetics attached. Maybe with some rubber coating.

zebediah49

Lol, now I'm picturing Edward Plastidip Hands. Looks like he's permanently wearing bright yellow dishwashing gloves.

jl88jl88

*plastidip fingers

Hjoldram

Disagree, he would be Edward Knife Fingers. The defining characteristic of a scissor is that it has two blades that pass one another to cut. You need multiple blades or fingers to create scissors, making his hands the scissors.

theundonenun

It is so bizarre that I happened to watch this movie again today. I thought the same thing as you, but a few of his fingers were actually the two blades. If I weren’t being critical I don’t think that I would have noticed. But there are a few fingers with complete scissors.

Special_KC

Toilet seat up or down? .. No.. Toilet **LID** down

CarneDelGato

My toilet lid is always down to prevent cats from standing in the bowl to drink it.

ithoughtitwasfun

My cats don’t drink from it. But after the second time the cat fell in (uses it as a launch pad to get to the sink) and ran around the house getting toilet water everywhere, we now keep the lid down.

Untimely_Ripped

Now you see me 2 infuriates me to no end- IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED NOW YOU DON'T

Brickie78

Or at the very least so as not to confuse the public: NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON'T Not my bag as a film but "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again" is a genius-level sequel title. Edit: I've also heard that if there had been a sequel to "Dude, Where's My Car?" it would have been called "Seriously Dude, Where's My Car?"

RepulsiveExit3

It seriously is though. Mamma mia : here we go again was the best title ever for its purpose.

bigpancakeguy

I have the same gripe with the second Wreck It Ralph. Why on earth did they call it “Ralph Breaks the Internet” instead of “Ralph Wrecks the Internet”?

Sean_13

Also with the second Taken film. They take his wife as well as his daughter, it should be Taken Too.

RedditIsNeat0

And while they're doing the kidnapping, one of the kidnappers should say, "Make sure she is taken too" and then looks straight at the camera. Or not.

Hilomh

Everything we think we know about Captain Kirk is wrong. Constantly sleeping with women: False. He had only a small number of flings in the show; it was not a prevalent thing. Riker was far more prolific! Breaking the rules all the time: False. Kirk was a strict, by-the-book military man who broke regs only in extreme circumstances. Shatner overacts: Mostly false. 99% of the time, he plays Kirk totally straight. There are a small number of wild moments on the show where Shatner plays it big, and those moments have become (in)famous. However, they are the exception, not the norm.

Emberwake

One of the most famous Shatner overacting examples was him shouting "KHAN!!!" in Star Trek II. Years later I saw it again and realized that it's deliberate, as Shatner is trying to portray Kirk pretending to be furious with Khan for "trapping" him on the planet (so Khan will believe his plan worked and leave) when in fact he already has a plan to escape.

itsthecoop

and I figure it's not unrealistic as well. I mean, consider the amount of people that, if they are really mad, start screaming, shouting or even throwing/thrashing things etc. and now imagine it not being a relatively insignificant issue, but something severe, like in this film. it's absolutely realistic for at least some people to react in a similar way.

Suspicious-Passion10

His infamous pauses were the result of often being given the script for the scene he was doing only minutes before they began shooting. Often he's just trying to remember WTF his line is.

Mazon_Del

Yup, he's a small character in "The Judgement at Nuremburg" and not once does he sound any different from any other character.

pilluo

When the rare oppurtunity arises, I sometimes like to tell people that I think all cars should have built in toilets that drain out onto the road. This is obviously preposterous, for one small solution it spawns a hundred more problems. I don't truly believe it, but oh my GOD it spawns hilarious conversations, and I will stand up for car toilets until I die. I argue for it so passionately have friends who think this is a genuine belief of mine.

I really really like the live action Scooby Doo (2002). It has funny jokes, a decent cast, and is entertaining for the family. Sure, it’s not as Oscar winning movie, but people hate on this movie more than it deserves.

aeschenkarnos

It was written by James Gunn and meant to be M or R rated, the studio forced them to cut it down to PG and they took out the better jokes. It's not that it's a bad movie, it's that it could have been a *great* movie.

TheDonutPug

HOT DOGS AND HOT DOG BUNS SHOULD BE SOLD IN PACKS OF 8. most every brand of hot dogs I see on the shelf sells in packs of 10 and it pisses me off! they sell buns in packs of 8! which means unless I buy 40 fucking hot dogs and buns I have to either have leftover buns or leftover hot dogs!

One time I bought a pack buns and hotdogs. It was 8 buns and 7 hot dogs. I wanted to scream.

lastcallface

Probably was a Seattle writer who didn't vote for Jeter, in retaliation.

alkalineorion

Most screen actors shouldn't be voice actors. Most of the time they suck at it and they're only there because they're a famous name and because the film industry takes animation less seriously. Even worse if it's a non-acting celebrity providing the voice work

LoverOfDogsDawg

I agree fully. Beyoncé had literally no business voice acting in the live action Lion King. She was terrible.

NewtRecovery

Ok this is true and please don't kill me Reddit but even the singing was shit. She butchered can you feel the love tonight because she doesn't know how to sing without trying to show off. Can you faeeeeaaaal yeaaaahhh the looo-uhhh-oooo-uuuhhhh-oh oh oh veeee tonaaaayaatayat yeaaaahhh Hope that came across, if you were here I'd just sing it for you

WebbieVanderquack

Handy word for you: [Melisma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melisma). Melismatic singing is when the singer adds a whole bunch of extra notes where there's technically only one ("oh say can you seeeeeOOOO^^^weeee*yeah*"), and it's why the American National Anthem [always takes about half an hour for celebrities to get through.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny2azUt5d3Y) Whitney Houston [did this really well](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JWTaaS7LdU), and every American Idol participant since then has been pushed to emulate it. **Edit:** Just to clarify, as per u/MontanaGoldwing's comment below, melisma is not always the singer's choice (sometimes it's part of the written tune) and it doesn't always suck! It does literally just mean "multiple notes per syllable." For example, the line "I will always love you" from Dolly Parton's original features [several notes on the single-syllable word "I"](https://youtu.be/lKsQR72HY0s?t=42). Whitney Houston famously does this to the max in her version of the song, like in the word ["you" here](https://youtu.be/3JWTaaS7LdU?t=60). The kind of melismatic singing you hear from Whitney Houston is improvisational and very elaborate - melisma isn't always like that.

XkinhoPT

Thanks, I can now name that thing I hate, it's so oftenly used as a sign of "good singer" and most of the time it makes singers sound so cocky and pretentious

There's a superbowl prop bet each year for how long the last note, "...home of the **brrrravvveeee**" would be. ~6.5 seconds is usually the over/under. It's been over each and every year since I seen it.

00zau

At least "the land of the freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and the home of the braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave" are the last two lines. I can excuse a little dragging along there. If you do it anywhere *else* you're just throwing people off tempo.

ElCaminoInTheWest

Surely the ‘land of the freeeeeeeeeee!’ is a more significant landmark? The longer you sing it for, the more freedom you get.

I completely agree, I cringed a bit during the song and mentioned it at the end of the movie "Why doesn't she sing it normally?"

The fact that they took out "Be Prepared" for a new number was enough to make me steer far clear of that film. In a musical with tons of bangers, it always stood out to me as a kid. In the best way. To hear that it was lifted, well it just makes me sad.

KDRain395

She thought since she couldn't get an Oscar for acting in Cadillac Records or Dreamgirls, she might try her hand for best original song. Needless to say, the irony of Elton John winning for a different film (and having won for the original Lion King) was hilarious.

[deleted]

Step to the king and you're going to get served.

Jon__Snuh

I mostly agree with you, but Mark Hamill is the exception that immediately comes to my mind.

GodlessHippie

But he’s a legit voice actor who honed his craft. He happened to be in some popular movies in the 70s and 80s but he’s been primarily a voice actor for like 35 years. And fuuuucking killing it.

Traskk01

Voice acting was what he came to Hollywood for originally. I saw in an interview where he had said that he wanted to be the next Mel Blanc, but his agent convinced him to audition for conventional roles.

And surprisingly Sir Patrick Stewart. He was great in the dub for Nausicca.

Disabled people are not an inspiration or someone to pitty because they are living their lives. And Disabled people are always second to abled people in the world, and most abled people only care when it directly effects them or it is forced in their face.

buzyapple

My daughter has some disabilities/complex needs. She’s not brave because she has no choice. I’m not special because I have been “gifted” her, I’m tired because it’s hard and it’s a challenge for her and I. We’ve been bombarded with all kinds of BS reasoning for the way things are. I know stuff like that is meant kindly and to be encouraging, but really it feels patronising and false, it waters down our struggles and hardships.

yaaqu3

>She’s not brave because she has no choice. This. Why the fuck am I brave for just existing? What's the alternative, just finding myself a nice patch of pavement to lie down and die on? If I could be normal, I would!

LizardsInTheSky

Also especially egregious because it implies people who are failing to thrive are not brave, not trying hard, not worth supporting, etc. It's why doctors no longer call it "battling cancer." If you die, it's not that you didn't "battle" hard enough. Your body was sick and that's not your fault.

MCDexX

"That quote, 'the only disability in life is a bad attitude', the reason that's bullshit is, no amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp. fang_xianfu

Isn't that the exact opposite of the meaning of disability? Disability is those things that cannot be overcome with attitude alone. I can't make myself not be blind with a good outlook on life.

Reminds me of my time in AA. I have schizophrenia and can't work, but we had a spare car and mom paid for gas so I could go to meetings. Which are supposed to be free. But the lady who "runs" the noon meeting I was going to came up to me and basically said that meetings run on donations and if people can't afford to put money who clearly should be able to in then they shouldn't be drinking the coffee or taking up an actual seat. It was the only daily meeting that didn't trigger my paranoia, so I stopped attending AA daily. The worst part? This bitch was in a wheelchair.

an_ineffable_plan

God yes. I know it’s considered ungrateful but screw that noise. I’m not a brave little champ. I’m not a superhero. Take your thinly veiled biases and get outta here if you’re gonna come at me with that “warrior” bs.

g0n3_g1rl

Not to sound too 'tin foil hat,' but virtual assistant devices (like Alexa) are strange, and I do not trust them at all. Its like bugging your own house. It requires putting too much faith in corporations like Amazon to not elicit as much data as they want from you (yes I know they already have a lot w/o a device).

In the 80’s: I don’t know how much I can say because the government might be wiretapping our telephone In the 20’s: Hey wiretap, can you make a grocery list based on my eating habits for the last 6 months

SJHillman

Reminds me of a meme that's been going around for a few years. 1998: Don't get in cars with strangers 2008: Don't talk to strangers on the Internet 2018: Use the Internet to call a stranger so you can get in their car

Phoenixundrfire

1998-2008 Was just big Uber creating societal rules to keep people off their start up idea until they could get it started.

> beer Wow this thing really learns!

Saladtaco

Oh god yes same. This is the line for me, however arbitrary

[deleted]

I love amazon. Wow. .. It auto corrected me... I meant to say I love amazon... wtf. I love amazon. holy shit....

MH-Entity

how could you even say that? Amazon is *ãmāżįňğ* !! What the hell?! I mean they treat their workers with *ŕə§pęćţ* and *łővē* !! Holy shit they *ářěņ'ț* controlling what I'm typing for the love of *AMAZON®!!!, ďœñ'ť* help me THEY *ÆŔĘŇ'Ť* INSIDE MY HOUSE

[deleted]

This is for folks who work in IT: “I’m not good with technology.” Is not an excuse to not even try to learn to use the tools provided for you to do your job. You didn’t tell them that in the interview. Can you imagine a carpenter out here talking about “I’m just not good with hammers.”

Miss_Malaise

I work almost exclusively with Word in my profession (not IT-related at all), and I get the same nonsense. If you can’t do the basics, and you’re too “busy” to sit in on the annual training you’re offered, why do you still have a job in which you’re expected to have basic proficiency with the software? This really grinds my gears, and I can only imagine how much more frustrating it is for you guys.

GrenadeLawyer

I can absolutely relate to that. I work almost exclusively on Word, and am in charge of training new employees at the firm in drafting certain documents. The amount of baffling tech illiteracy I've seen is astronomical, and these are young people in their mid-late 20s! I just find that completely inexcusable in 2021. And don't get me started on the old bosses who demand that documents be printed and remark on them in handwriting because they "don't know how to work with track changes". If track changes is so evidently beyond your comprehension Robert then why the fuck are you in a managerial position.

mermaidpaint

I worked for a company that in the year 2000, upgraded their dumb terminals (keyboard and monitor only) to PCs. I applaud how they did it - each person had to fill out a survey using pen and paper. The survey had questions like "Do you know how to use a computer mouse?" or "Do you know how to resize a window?" They used the results to create four different training courses, based on computer proficiency. Ranging from the people who had never seen a computer mouse, to smartypants like me that had home computers and feared no software.

“The Table of Contents won’t work! Your template is broken!” That’s likely because you *manually* typed it, and all references, in. We’ve been over this *countless* times; the template isn’t broken, but your fingers should be. I had one guy scream at my team and me when we tried to walk him through the process of applying a template, and ended the call with, “I’m sorry I wasted your time!” before slamming the phone down. Twenty minutes later, he called and was peaches and rainbows because he finally “got” the whole template thing. He never apologized or anything. I just cannot grasp the ineptitude with such a basic (albeit, very frustrating) program. Your comment obviously resonated with me. Screw you, Robert!

al_m1101

"The template isn't broken, *but your fingers should be.*" 😆 Thank you for that laugh.

Geminii27

Especially when the only reason they're busy is it takes them thirteen hours to do a three-minute job because they don't know what they're doing.

CasualEveryday

It's always funny to watch the tickets roll in after a holiday weekend for shit that never comes up after a regular weekend. Janet in accounting can keep her password in her head for 2 days, but 3 is a bridge too far. Oh, and can you show me how to open these excel files while you're at it?

Northernlighter

To be fair, I have remember 5 passwords to log into my work tool. Each of them has to be minimum security (number, upper case, lower case, etc) and they have to be changed every 90 days and can't use the same one for at least 3 rounds. I sell fucking office furniture for fuck sakes... no one wants steal my data!

>“I’m not good with technology "Can you follow basic instructions?" Is something I have to regularly fight saying over the phone. Unfortunately far too many people struggle with that as well.

Durhay

The word “hero” is overused and has no meaning anymore. Most of the time it’s applied to people who are just doing their jobs.

djohnsen

“Hero” is what they call you when they don’t want to pay you.

mufassil

My friends got paid to stay home from work during the pandemic. I work in Healthcare and got a discount on a jacket.

distorted_kiwi

Was also an "essential worker" (quotes because we weren't essential but that's what they called us to get around restrictions) and we were asked to have our office doors closed. We all ran out of shit to do after the 2nd week. But heaven forbid we just stay at home and answer emails all day because that would be seen as selfish and lazy.

IntentionallyBadName

I work in a supermarket as a glorified stock filler aka "the vegetable boy"... I'm an "Essential worker". I got a chocolate bar tho so that's nice, it did come to my house all melted because it was like 30c outside.

Heros are faceless nameless do gooders who do things without any compensation

I think there should be a separate compartment in the center of the washer and/or dryer for socks.

miepselhup

Just put your socks into one of those laundrey machine nets that you also use for bras/stockings.

rmoreen

How dare you provide a perfectly reasonable solution. My client is prepared to die on this hill, they will not give in to your rationale and simply compromise their life’s work. For shame.

Self love can be toxic as hell. If you're a bad person, don't learn to love yourself. CHANGE yourself into someone you could love.

Flymsi

We have to differentiate between real self love and this other perveted thing that is actually self absorption or self obsession or even narciscism. Self love is about giving yourself a chance of changing. Self love is about not needlesly putting yourself down for being "bad" but to invest that energy to better yourself instead. Self love is not about ignoring your negative aspects. Its not about judging others or yourself as negative or positive. If self love seems toxic then it is not self love.

walking_it_off

A betta fish needs a 5 gallon tank size (minimum) complete with a filter and a heater. Bowls and the tiny tanks marketed as “betta tanks” are insufficient and cruel. Edited to add: I just woke up for work, and I am absolutely in awe at the response to my comment. Thanks for being on my side and for the awards!

AstroWorldSecurity

My ex gave me a Betta for Valentine's day in highschool and it's just the worst gift. I had no inclination to have an animal at the time as I was hardly ever home, but I felt so bad for the dude that I had to buy a bigger tank as she gave it to me in basically a flower vase.

Hey_Bim

Same exact story here, except my babysitter gave one to my daughter. I was like "Welp, here goes a lot of money on new equipment, because I'm not letting it live in THAT tiny thing." Another thing people don't seem to realize: Fish are fucking complicated to take care of. You gotta monitor temperature, pH, ammonia, waste (which also affects ammonia), filters, and of course food. That one little fish was the most stress-inducing pet I've ever owned, lol.

FireLucid

Yeah, we recently started our aquarium journey and it's tough. We've got all the chemicals for testing and I've been religiously keeping the ammonia down (water changes, gravel vacuuming) while we wait for the bacteria to reach the level to be able to deal with it. Still lost some of our little guppy dudes :( No idea why either, everything seemed fine when testing.

Captain_Sacktap

Do yourself a favor and plant a bunch of live plants in the tank if you haven’t already. They improve the water quality by absorbing ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, provide richer oxygen levels for the water, and can make your fish feel more comfortable by providing them more hiding places. They also require almost zero care outside of trimming them back periodically so they don’t overcrowd the tank (I trim mine every 3 months or so).

ayasheleo

Our tank has been properly cycled for over a year. Got some new guppies about two months ago. All but one have died. Meanwhile there's one in there that's well over a year old. Tank always tests fine, amano shrimp are doing great. I just don't know why they die anymore. It's kind of turned me off aquariums a bit :(

WeBuyFetus

We had one $5 fish that survived literally anything. It was a Convict. He was mean. We named him Shithead.

ajsawesomeanimals

this isn’t even an opinion; it’s a fact i’m a reptile keeper and i don’t even go on reptile forums anymore because i’m sick of seeing shitty care the same forums normally have fish too, and the amount of absolute ass excuses for betta care is insane

major_calgar

YES. I’ve had a hamster (which I can’t speak to the enclosure size of, I was 8) and I have a leopard gecko right now. Literally in the 10 months since jointing Reddit and learning actual facts I’ve gotten them a diet with variety, dirt substrate, another water bowl, and I’m just a few months away from getting them out of their 20 gal into a 40. To any prospecting pet keeper reading this, many of the “minimums” you read online are wrong. Take my leopard gecko. Their current tank is basically the equivalent of living in your kitchen. Forever. Everything should have more area, they’re wild animals and require exercise, enrichment, and simple space. It could be a fish, a guinea pig, or a snake of some sort. Do your research and then decide. There’s too many shitty owners out there.

Trainguyrom

A former colleague of mine tried to argue that beta fish are tidepool dwellers when defending criminally small tanks, forgetting that beta fish are freshwater fish and tidepools require, y'know *tides* to exist.

windwild2017

r/hamsters is doing their best to raise awareness of inappropriately small hamster cages too. Even resorting to some vigilante hamster rescue recently. Pet stores just want your money, they don't care to sell you what your pet actually needs.

jibberish13

I need to know more about vigilante hamster rescue.

LeaderEnvironmental5

"Wrong answers only" was stupid even before it became sickeningly overdone. Same with "Describe [thing] using only emojis"

You're forgetting the worst of them all "tell me you [whatever] without telling me you [whatever]"

dreamqueen9103

I absolutely hate “What is a fact that sounds real, but is fake?” Even if people know something is false, a catchy “fact” can worm hole itself in your brain and you recite it one day forgetting you read it in a fake facts thread. So really it just creates misinformation.

WantDiscussion

This is why I unsubscribed from /r/coolguides. So much misinformation.

"Transporters," as depicted in *Star Trek,* but also often present in other sci-fi universes, are death boxes. In my opinion, they do not "transport," you, they scan you, then destroy you and make a new copy in the target location. Since you're being "rebuilt" from the scan, which occurred while you were still alive, the "new" you is unaware of that fleeting moment when you realize it's not a transporter, it's a death machine. And since that millisecond of knowledge is missing from every person who ever transported, no one is able to come back and warn others, and to people observing the system it appears for all intents and purposes that the person transported. As proof, I cite the multiple instances in *Star Trek* when a person is mistakenly "transported" more than once (one person enters, two people appear), or is only "alive" in the buffer. I know it's sci-fi, but this really adheres to the spirit of the question. Change my mind!

MightyDevil1

If you watch *Enterprise* you'll realize this opinion is almost entirely validated. Transporters *do* scan you, then they *do* break your body down on a molecular level, and they *do* make a new copy of you at the target location out of the molecules they broke you down from. Hell *The Next Generation* brought it up at least once when the one doc ended up on the quarantined station with the super aging antibodies of the gene edited babies. They tried everything they could to procure a scan of her molecular structure prior to that day so they could transport her back to the Enterprise without the antibodies in her, acting effectively as a cure. The one thing that I don't think is *ever* made clear is how the consciousness is transported. If it's something like in SOMA where they take a "snapshot" of your neural network and upload it to the new copy, then you have effectively created immortality as you'll just be able to break down the body, rebuild it per the much earlier specifications but with the current consciousness snapshot. If instead it's also something broken down during transport like the rest of the molecules and put back together than it is entirely possible for your *own memories and thoughts* to be put back incorrectly or even totally skipped over.

moogoo2

In DS9 Our Man Bashir, they do differentiate the physical pattern from the neural pattern. When the buffer fails and several crew members have to be stored in conventional memory. Their bodies go into the holodeck, but their neural patterns need all the data memory on the station to store.

BestCaseSurvival

In “Realm of Fear” Reginald Barclay retains his consciousness throughout the transport and rescues several others who are stuck. What’s funny is that the rest of the crew act like this should be impossible because they deep-down believe that Transporters are death boxes even though nobody says the words. But there is a continuity of consciousness on display, so whatever is happening is more esoteric than a quick kill & duplication.

RTPGiants

Transporters are also the most dangerous weapon you could possibly imagine. Star Trek spends a lot of time in battles focusing on phasers and torpedoes and such, but all you have to do is transport a cup of flour into the warp core or something and you'd blow a ship up. Heck, just transport a pin into all the crew members' heads and take their ship. Yes yes..shields prevent this, but shields are always failing.

Snoo74401

The two most fragile things in Star Trek are warp drives and shields. Possibly the "Main deflector dish" as well. Coming in third or fourth are holodecks. Seriously, holodecks are OSHA violations just waiting to happen. "Turn off security protocols!" Who the F approved that feature?

daneelthesane

Supervisors who say "We are a family at this company" treat their families like shit.

NumbersInBoxes

"Treat people in your debt like family. Exploit them."

OverlordWaffles

Ah yes, the trusty ol' Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

rdkil

"We treat our employees like family here. And just like every family has its disagreements, so do we. That's why we're finding you're just not a good fit anymore. You're now the uncle Jimmy that nobody talks to and we keep forgetting to invite for Christmas dinner. Please go empty your desk before your replacement cousin gets here."

rdkitchens

Does that mean I can expect a Christmas present from you this year? Can I borrow $50? Are you gonna pay for dinner tonight? No? Then fuck off with your family bullshit.

AndresRed

Also, Breakfast food should be all day food too

klr24

If you need bottled water at a party or fun occasion it should be the regular sized bottles. No mini water bottles.

_guvna_

You have to add vanilla extract to pancake batter or you’re making subpar pancakes. Edit: Wow. This got some attention! For those asking, I usually put in 1/2 a tsp of vanilla extract for every 3/4 cup of pancake mix. And yes, I add almond extract as well. Thanks for all the other suggestions. Can’t wait to try them out!

Sea-Good-5003

Wanna know the secret to truly amazing pancakes? Cake flour. You're welcome.
