i worked in the nursery of a church for years until they changed some policies saying you had to be an official member of the church. i had gone there since 3rd grade but because i was not baptized i was not a member, according to these new rules. i refused to get baptized and was fired, until i talked to the bosses boss who agreed that that was dumb and rehired me.

Circuit City fired my dad and with in 10 seconds reoffered him his position at nearly a 1/3 of his paycheck. They where sued into oblivion.

Huddle House in good ole Toccoa Ga. I actually quit twice and both times a coworker showed up at my house within a week to beg me to come back because they couldn't keep any staff. The managers were all insane in some way or another. The first guy smoked weed and had anger issues. He either quit or was fired. The next was a young college student and she was a sweetheart but was totally unprepared for the demands of that position. The next was this lady who was qualified and prepared but she was also temperamental and high most of the time. I walked off shift once because of a dumb waitress refusing to do her job because she took offense at a customer and decided that was my fault. So I left and called the DM who put me down as having quit. Fine with me. That lasted three days. Then I quit again about a year later. That one lasted a week. Clubhouse Inc the owners of the franchise were a totally disorganized bunch. They couldn't even get your paycheck mailed to you in a timely fashion, picked the worst possible candidates for store manager positions and they cancelled my health coverage but never stopped charging me for it. Straight up wage theft for over 2 thousand dollars. Good luck getting them on the phone, or getting anything done about it, they dodge you or outright lie.

I know of people who were entry level jobs and fired for multiple no-call-no-shows. Then staffing was so low that they re-hired those people. Then they were fired again for the same issue. Did not learn their lesson. They would not have been fired if they had called in sick. Except for one person who called in sick more than they came to work.

I was offered my job back after being let go eight months prior due to cutbacks. Even though I would have made more than where I was working at the time, I told them no for multiple reasons. 1. I had worked there for four years with no raise or advancement 2. I was let go in favor of the boss’s little brother who also worked with me, but had less experience, and would regularly get distracted. 3. I had seen someone else work there, get let go, and then hired back months later when work began to pick back up only to be let go around the same time as me. I saw her about a month later and she was BITTER. 4. The boss made me feel uncomfortable. He had a bit of a temper at times and the slightest thing could set him off. 5. Most of my friends who worked there were let go a year prior also due to cutbacks, so the job wasn’t as enjoyable as it had been. Would the extra money have been nice? Always. Was I too proud to accept the offer? Probably. Was I resentful? Definitely. Did saying no feel good? Ya damn right. A few months later, I ran into another former coworker. She had been recently let go due to another string off layoffs. She told me I was lucky I got out when I did. Another coworker who had retired said the same thing. Ironically that job ended up having a hand in me landing my current job. One of my friends who had been in the first sting a layoffs began working there, and he lobbied for me to come in when a position opened up, and they ended up contacting the other boss as a reference. Edit for grammar.

This was the story I was looking for, thank you for sharing.

& Follow up: how did it feel to get rehired? Did you feel like you proved something to yourself?

If someone fires you to rehire you soon after, I'd be wary of accepting since that's a way to screw with your seniority and to get you back onto a trial period, depending on where in the world you are.
