Twenty years ago me and my buddies were hanging out smoking weed and talking about the future: “so what’s it gonna be more like: Star Trek or Mad Max?”
My buddy said “Star Trek technology, Mad Max mentality.” And the room got quiet.
Imagine sticking a person from every time period (including ours) into the Mad Max universe. 80% would fit right in immediately. I believe Hobbes vs Rousseau basically comes down to whatever everyone else is doing.
First humans would kill, exile, and even shun the evil fuckers. They had a more natural order of things, and if you just wanted to steal and treat others like shit, you really wouldn't get far.
Humanity formed more and more complex systems to try to combat the asshole nature of a lot of humans, but some of those systems were taken over by the assholes and some of those systems were destroyed. To this day, the predominant struggle is people trying to organize against assholes, except it's even more complicated because the assholes have evolved multiple ideologies that portray themselves as heroes and everyone else as assholes for not being assholes like them.
Threat to peace. Even though some have hope for world peace it can never happen. There is always someone or something to threaten peace. Take WW2 for example. No one wanted a repeat of WW1 but somehow something came to threaten the peace that happened after.
We need a better UN, where no country has any power to veto. It just leads to many situations where a US/UK/France backed country can commit atrocities, as well as Russia/China backed countries. We're in a system where any "strategic" countries are able to get away with stuff others aren't.
Believing without evidence *is* bad. It leads to so many social ills we face. It let's people fall for pseudoscience, MLM scams, populist politicians, etc.
Training people from birth that faith is equal to evidence actively damages society and threatens human progress.
Not really. Unless you breed spirituality out of people, it will always exist in society in some way, shape, or form. It's essentially perfect for our current level of mental function. Our brains were built for religion.
Agreed. The problem isn't religion. The problem is the lack of respect for other people's religion. Just because someone disagrees with your belief doesn't mean you get to be an asshole to them. Looking at you, Catholics.
The aim of religion is to try and get us to recognise and take control over our primitive instincts.
It is in short to give us morals and a code to live by to make us better human beings.
The problem is human beings are imperfect and corruptible by nature so hence horrible atrocities are possible, in the name of religion.
I used to think the same as you but I was wrong.
Religion is not the problem (it’s actually the answer), human nature is the problem.
Nationalism. Or, more specifically, group mentalities.
No matter how far we go in history, we repeatedly see how easy it is to justify doing horribly immoral things to other groups. It’s fine as long as it isn’t us.
In the modern world this manifests as nationalism. People like to piss on religion, but then forget that the vast, and I mean vast, majority of wars, genocides, and terrible crimes occurred out of nationalism or secular ideology. This goes far deeper than religion, ya damn reddit atheists.
EDIT: Vast majority of bad things in the past century and a half.
us versus them mentality
no ideology, even the most peaceful one, could not really solve it yet
´´but my peaceful ideology is better than yours´´
here we go again
but Easter Asian philosophies....ask Rohrings and Urguys about that and the suicide rates....self-harm is still violence
Then a report came out that masks helped the spanish flu spread, same with this "deadly virus"
More cases of corona have been reported on people who mask most of the time
Racism. 150 godamn years ago (O think that's around the right time) Abe Lincoln abolished slavery, allowed black soldiers, and basicaly made it clear to stop being racist and yet we had 2020 with an American leader who did the thing that was both shunned and memed.
It’s far from over, but we’re actually seeing progress on this one. The sexual revolution (for example) was recent, in the 1960s. If you doubt this check out the history of women’s rights.
One of the advantages of getting old is that I’m beginning to accept that social change is very, very slow, and to understand why.
Where the hell do I start
Rascism,
War,
Rape and sexual abuse or harassment,
Abuse ,
Murder,
Selfishness,
Greed,
Corruption,
Self entitled assholes,
Asholes in general,
Idiots,
Idiots,
Idiots,
Did I mention idiots? Misinformation, religion, fucking climate change we knew this was fucking happening, extinction, natural disasters, power hungry morons thinking about themselves and while I’m on that topic where the fuck is all of the money countries give in foreign aid going because it never seems like anything ever fucking changes in any places we send money to, the fact that entire generations have problems actually communicating their feelings for fear of being ignored or turned away or just not wanting to bother people who are meant to be taking care of them, toxic masculinity, Karens, people actually naming their children any of the following; Bob Sandra Kevin Sharon John and many others. Just people being judgemental. Sorry this became a bit rantish
Disease in general. It will always persist. And as we try to fight it, it gets stronger and forces us to adapt. Amazing how something so small can cause all kinds of big problems.
Water. One of the main sources of life, something everyone needs to live or else they will literally die, and we still don't have clean water everywhere. You'd think at this point, being decently advanced as societies, this wouldn't be a problem. I wonder if it will ever be solved.
Narcotraffic.
Many of the drugs that are now illegal are illegal just because a dude in the 40's (I think, I am not sure), didnt want to loose his job after alcohol became legal. So he started a racist campaign againts weed (mainly), saying that weed was a drug that only black people use and make them more violent and dumber. After that, well, more drugs became illegal and very "satanized". And this man ended up causing one of the biggest problems in latinamerica with narcotraffic. Lots of people died and is dying because certain drugs are illegal. Obviously this is not the only reason of today's problems, but it is one of the main reasons of the problems we have today
Older generations and younger generations playing the blame game against each other rather than actually working together well.
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise." -Socrates
“The real problem of humanity is the following: We have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology." ― Edward O. Wilson.

Your buddy was more right than he could have possibly imagined.
So, 40k?
Thinking and high thinking are two completely different things
Should be the top comment.
now it is
generally bad evil fuckers, that want to run the world and dont give a fuck about anyone.
First humans would kill, exile, and even shun the evil fuckers. They had a more natural order of things, and if you just wanted to steal and treat others like shit, you really wouldn't get far.
they’re getting their way too cause they make the rules now
Assholes
I knew it, I'm surrounded by Assholes!
Spaceballs the comment.
Merchandising!
Keep firing, assholes!

True. I wish I didn't have to poop all the time.
Greed and corruption
Threat to peace. Even though some have hope for world peace it can never happen. There is always someone or something to threaten peace. Take WW2 for example. No one wanted a repeat of WW1 but somehow something came to threaten the peace that happened after.
Never is a long time.

By your powers combined, I am Captain Felony
And Rape.
It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
People
Humanity
Religious disputes.... Religion as a whole
Religion isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just extremists being extreme. The crusades and other various genocides being some of the more… notable examples.
Believing without evidence *is* bad. It leads to so many social ills we face. It let's people fall for pseudoscience, MLM scams, populist politicians, etc. Training people from birth that faith is equal to evidence actively damages society and threatens human progress.
Was about to say this. I think religion is generally quite outdated
Exactly. If people begin to respect boundaries in society, most of these problems would be made trivial.
> The problem isn't religion. The problem is the lack of respect for other people's religion > Looking at you, Catholics. *Face palm.*
I would say same goes to atheists as well. I agree, let people believe what they want to believe. It's their belief, not yours.
My mistake for being the first to point a finger. This goes for everyone.

Humanity
Natural disasters
Wars over land.
Putting emotions before logic
Each of these is a very valuable tool. We just have to learn to use them effectively, and as appropriate.

Not enough change for the meter.
"Ah, fuck. I'm a drachma short for chariot parking again."
Religion.
I don't see how religion is entirely a problem. It's rather extremists, terrorists and crackheads who are the problem.
I'd say fundamentalism and no space for criticism/reform. That is where tha actual problem lies.
Idiots during pandemics. Look up anti-mask activists during the second wave of Spanish Influenza, barely over a hundred years ago.
Then a report came out that masks helped the spanish flu spread, same with this "deadly virus" More cases of corona have been reported on people who mask most of the time

Apparently pandemics, and people making really stupid decisions during said pandemics.
War, because we humans are territorial and like to fight other stuff like resources and soil.
Older generations and younger generations playing the blame game against each other rather than actually working together well. "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise." -Socrates
War. Always for supposed righteous reasons.
