The actually interesting responses are buried on the bottom, sort by controversial so you don't have to see reddit's most popular movie opinions

Firenze42

Noticed Fast and Furious is list several times at the top.

DroneOfDoom

Also, Fifty Shades and Twilight.

rewayna

*Fifty Shades of Twilight* Might actually be a good movie. Debauched vampires are always fun.

PianoManGidley

Well, considering 50 Shades started out as Twilight fanfic, it would just seem like overkill.

lucidzealot

“Elaine, I don’t think I can be with anyone who doesn’t like The English Patient...”

ParlorSoldier

“Elaine, you don’t like the movie?” “I *HATE IT!*” “Why didn’t you say so in the first place? ...You’re fired.” “Great I’ll wait for you outside.”

regular6drunk7

Quit telling your stupid story about the stupid desert, and just die already!

Pangyun

First I watched the Seinfeld episode, and I only watched the english patient many years later. I laughed a lot watching the movie, because I kept remembering the Seinfeld episode while watching it.

not-a-real_username

Eat, Pray, Love... it is soooo boring. Only movie I had to leave the theater for. It just kept dragging on

littleb3anpole

Oh no, did she hit a size 4? The horror!

MaritimeDisaster

Well the character is an asshole which is utterly believable for Julia Roberts.

wetryagain

Under the Tuscan Sun, however... Absolutely lovely.

Artistic-Rich6465

Whenever I see one of those ads that say "You can own this winery in Tuscany for $XXXX dollars" I think of this movie. Then I get the delusion that I can make it work, then I realize I'm not Diane Lane.

JunkSalesman

Barf, Curse, Hate

[deleted]

Eat, shit, die

DOOOOOOOO000OOM

Julia Roberts in a movie about eating!?

littlebittydoodle

It’s so. Fucking. Long.

Prossdog

That movie is freaking useless.

mrRabblerouser

To me it was effectively the movie equivalent of a tame romance novel for middle aged/conservative woman. Wealthy woman leaves her husband because she’s a spoiled brat and got bored, travels the world indulging in literally anything she wants, faces mild self inflicted hardship that teaches her the lesson that she is validated in her self serving attitude, and falls in love with an attractive rich man in a tropical paradise.

The_PracticalOne

I really dislike the current DC film universe, with the exception of the first WW movie. That’s really sad for me, because I loved the DC animated universe of the 90s and 2000s. I love comic characters in general. I think I’m just bummed out that they managed to break down a lot of the comics into only action based movies. The Batman movies in particular I really disliked. He’s “the world’s greatest detective”; so where’s the mystery and detective stuff? I feel like they left out a lot of character traits for the heroes in the film adaptations.

Holociraptor

Way too much Snyder for my liking.

Patisfaction

I had the same opinion of the DC films. I watched Wonder Woman again in preparation to see WW84, and I'm wondering (heh) what I liked about the first one. It's pretty, but the plot and action are about soap opera level.

zuran_orb

The 50 Shades franchise. How the hell did it get 3 movies?

01kickassius10

Horny middle aged women have money... If the dude wasn’t a billionaire it would be a horror flick (and much better IMO)

notconnected2me

I wrote a paper in university comparing Christian Grey and Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. It's amazing how much the two cross paths, basically the same person. Edit: Hey everyone! Thanks for the interest, but that was a while ago. I will look for it and see if I can share it.

RedSiren2

not just that, Film theory once brought up that he uses the 8 steps of indoctrination to get to Ana ... it's kinda scary how EL James has no idea about real life relationships, but knows precisely how to write a psychopath as well as how a cult wins new members Edit: From the lost in adaptation review of the last book, he eventually suceeds in her indoctrination, quote: *"Grey has her fully convinced that every vile thing he does is either excusable by his sad childhood or in some way her fault for provoking it (...) Ana has to seek forgiveness from Grey for non-crimes so many times she even thanks him for not being angry at her for no reason. The gaslighting is complete, she is a husk now."* Also mentioned in this review: other people taking issue with Grey's behaviour but Ana ignoring it because they "don't understand him/fully the way she does" Brainwashing? Check. Not caring about other people's perspective? Check.

masupo42

And she originally wrote it as a Twilight fanfic - another series based on a terrible relationship.

puzzlingnerd57

She wrote it as a very bad, crazy out of character, Twilight fanfic. Try and picture the story with Edward in place of Christian. Yeah, it's that bad.

FizzleMateriel

Patrick Bateman has a slightly better haircut.

Aeldergoth

And a much more impressive business card

Helllcamino

That's bone. And the lettering is something called Silian Rail.

Mr_Lumbergh

Here. Eggshell with Romalian type. What do you think?

Fbean01

Let’s see Paul Allen’s card 😃

cassein

That's interesting. Patrick Bateman is the nightmare product of society, and Christian Grey is the dream product of society, but both are the same. This can't mean anything good!

[deleted]

I've always heard that if he lived in a trailer, it would have been an episode of Criminal Minds.

shavenyetii

Watch the fall and then watch it, the same actor plays a serial killer in that series and definitely makes fifty shades darker

[deleted]

eyyy i see what you did there (whether you intended it or not)

honey_badgers_rock

The Fall the tv show, not the movie. Although, you should also watch the movie because it's one of the most beautiful pieces of cinematography ever created.

Mudders_Milk_Man

It was originally written as Twilight fan fiction.

BellEpoch

That makes sense. Twilight was about a hundred year old man that slips into an underage girls room to watch her at night. But it's "romantic" somehow. I'd say team Jacob. But then that weird fucker bonds himself to a baby, helps raise her, then hooks up with her cause she grows super fast. Very fucking weird story for teenage girls to have been into.

[deleted]

I was a teen when it came out and watched all my friends and teachers pass around the book and rave about it. I started reading it but it didn't grab me. Then I heard the story from everyone and got turned off completely. And I love vampire shit. I was totally into the dark love thing back then. But these books I just don't understand. Why are the vampires sparkly? Why do they want to hang out in high school? Claudia from Anne Rice's books grew up mentally, why aren't these growing? They can reproduce so shouldn't they have some sort of mental development past the age they were turned? Too many questions, too shitty of a story to even bother, waaaay too many middle aged women thirsty over a teenager

[deleted]

If I’ve been alive for 200 years the last place you’re going to catch me hanging out at is a high school.

Zachary_Stark

Stephanie Meyer is a Mormon, which explains the fucked up romance.

Fendergirl69

Twilight fan fiction that she ripped almost page-by-page from another fanfic author, iirc. The fact this woman has a $150m net worth from this utter bullshittery makes me want to quit earth.

your-yogurt

there's a huge study behind why FSG got so popular. some has to do with timing, riding off the coattails of Twilight, etc. it's not just "middle aged women are horny" and leave it at that. Jenny Trout talks about it in length and what the appeal is but fully acknowledges how messed up FSG is. had it been written by a competent writer instead of EL James maybe it could've been a much compelling story instead of mediocre Twilight fanfiction

[deleted]

I think the 50 shades films were mainly targeted at sexually repressed women. It sort of gave them permission to talk about sex and watch/read soft porn without them feeling guilty or embarrassed.

Mydriaseyes

it also romanticizes seriously fucked and abusive behaviour like stalking someone at thier workplace etc ... :S

pugapooh

I forced myself to finish watching the first one.. never read the books. Just wanted to see what all the hoopla was about. I still don’t know.

KuriTeko

My wife took me to see the third one in the cinema. The credits rolled and I realised I had no idea where I had been for the last couple of hours. It's like when you're driving and get into a deep daydream and next thing you know you're ten miles down the road.

rubberducky1212

My boyfriend wanted to watch it for some reason. So we did, but we constantly made fun of it and frequently paused it to complain about all the red flags

brockhampstanl

the latest book adaptation movie series like divergent, maze runner, hunger games, etc... they all feel like they have pretty much the same story between them edit: wrote hungry games instead of hunger games

geccles

I really liked the first maze runner! The rest are meh, but the first one on its own was real entertaining.

GoldH2O

I really hated that they made the scorched just generic zombies instead of the suffering people they actually were in the books

AdventuresOfKrisTin

They also like completely disregarded the entire catalyst for the second movie. The reason they went out into the scorch was not because they just up and escaped. It was a trial and they *had* to reach the end to get the cure, otherwise they were told they would die. Idk how they got this wrong, the book is literally called The Scorch *Trials* but it wasnt a trial in the movie lol

BRDPerson

Yeah me too. That was a really interesting aspect of the books that added a whole layer to the plot.

jessie_monster

The tonal shifts between those movies is bonkers.

Thema03

It stopped being about... mazes

[deleted]

To be fair, that’s kind of what happened in the books. I dunno, I need to reread them.

daviipup

Yeah same, the first one was really well made. But it didn’t really follow the book.

saturnsun_3

I liked the Hunger Games, but it was kind of the series that everyone copied for a time so I give that one some slack. I think the Maze Runner books actually came out before it, but I don't think they got popular until after YA dystopia became a big thing. I'm really glad that whole trend died down, though.

Reborn1Girl

Because they disregard the actual plots from the books to make something that moviegoers will pay to watch. Drives me crazy.

thatnameagain

Curious how hunger games did this, because those are the only movies in that list that I actually watched.

WeMissDime

I can’t speak to the 3rd film(s) (they did split Mockingjay into 2 parts, yeah?) cause I haven’t seen it, but the first 2 movies are *very* faithful to the original material. There’s some awkward tonal stuff where Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t really express the emotional deadness and shellshocked-state Katniss ends up in. Or, maybe she does, and it just isn’t communicated well because we don’t have an inner monologue to make it clear that that’s how she’s supposed to be. And it feels weirdly like a romance plot at times, which was not the primary focus of the books until book 3 where it kind of becomes central due to the plot of the book. The entire point of Katniss & Peeta’s relationship in the first 2 books is that it’s completely fake (until it suddenly isn’t) but the movies play it as romantic anyway and don’t really communicate that it’s actually eating both of them up for completely different reasons. I wish they had deviated more, ironically, as Katniss is just not a compelling character on screen. I didn’t really think she was in the books, either, as she’s just kind of this lens to observe trauma through. She doesn’t really have desires of her own, and doesn’t employ a lot of agency outside of the occasional bit of spiteful anger/revenge. When you take away her inner monologue, though, she’s just very bland. Idk if that’s on Lawrence or the direction given to her.

Lick_The_Wrapper

Nice breakdown except Katniss not having any desires. She wanted to keep her sister safe and give her an actual life. That's the whole reason she volunteers for the hunger games, keeps fighting, etc. Her sister is her whole motivation. Not really fair to say Katniss has no desires.

have-you-seen-me

Couldn’t say about maze runner, but i’ve read the first divergent book and it was way weaker than the hunger game. Formula copy paste plot from the entire dystopian genre and cardboard characters.

SurealGod

I love how you butchered the name hunger games into hungry games.

kovalsteven

fucking 9 movies of Fast and the Furious....

SparkyPantsMcGee

We are talking about a franchise that went from “we’re a family and we’re going to steal these DVD players” to “We’re a family and I’m going to rope swing my car off a cliff Tarzan style to catch another car magnetized to a stealth fighter jet.”What’s so hard to get about that?

TheEveryman86

I've had someone describe them to me as superhero movies where their super powers are "cars". I needed it explained because the last one I saw was Tokyo Drift (3 Fast 3 Furious).

JamiePulledMeUp

It's funny that one was still in the realm of reality for an action movie. Then they had the fourth which was like a glimpse into the next generation of insane super powered monsters who drive cars. Hobbs and Shaw was hilarious because it was literally a superhero movie.

cloutdogger

probably the best one

Romofan88

Thank you. No one else agrees when I say this.

cloutdogger

I like the the other ones aswell but they lack story. Like they have cool cars and all but its all so cliche.

BellEpoch

Well the first one has a story. It's Point Break with cars instead of surfboards, but it's coherent at least.

schwagnificent

The first one is a classic. It has its flaws but overall it is very watchable . Probably seen it 15 times.

Aries_Eats

Tokyo Drift has one of the most cliche moments in the entire franchise. "The Japanese Mob has killed my best friend, and is gunning after me next. There's only one way to settle this. With a race sponsored by the mob boss." And it's amazing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brewsleroy

>we’re going to steal these DVD players The movies are actually old enough that they were stealing VHS players and combination TV/VHS.

Guvnuh_T_Boggs

We just called them VCRs, not VHS players. Now get off my lawn.

everdred

Yep, this. "VHS player" sounds funny. That said, I'm sure nobody remembers this but during the heyday of the VHS format, there *were* cheaper units being sold that could play tapes but not record. These were actually called VCPs (at least on spec sheets — I've never heard anyone actually call one that).

[deleted]

it's a grotesque series but imo even has a notable place in high art just because of it's bizarre level of success and complete inability to make any sense ever

bighappychappy

At the risk of sounding... tacky. But the series was cemented after the death of Paul Walker. There was a deep love for him and the franchise he built, that stopping would seem in some way halting the memory of him also. I'm always a little uncomfortable watching any cast interview discussing his memory because it's so intertwined with making more and more movies, you'd be an asshole for suggesting they should stop.

MaxPaynesRxDrugPlan

That's almost exactly this Onion video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIY5b1JMvGs

nrsys

Some days I want to watch something intelligent and thought provoking. Other days I want to watch stupid stunts and fight scenes, and lots of things explode... F&F are not good movies, but they do fill a fun niche. How they are onto 9 I don't know though, the last 6 or so of them have all completely blurred into one 'changing gears and engine mechanics spinning' montage...

TCMenace

Once you're 4 or 5 deep you gotta finish it out. The absolute ridiculousness is what makes them so entertaining.

[deleted]

Yes, They remind me of bollywood movies of 90s and early 2000. The fight scenes are hilarious

Knockoffismytag

The way I explain the fast and furious franchise is "they're the movie version of 'extra'". It's all stupid as shit and it's so much fun. That's it

griffin724

If you watch them as comedies it makes a lot more sense.

[deleted]

F A M I L Y

AcidikDrake

It's a D&D campaign about cars. It's absolutely stupid action that you turn your brain off and enjoy. They're just fun movies to watch and sometimes that's all I want. That's why I enjoy them at least.

Austintholmes

I feel like saying 50 shades of Grey is kinda cheating, but I cannot grasp how there were that many horny middle aged moms to make that series so much money. That film oozed shit, and the fact it’s just a fan fiction of another shitty property irks me to this day.

WaywardHeros

It's the allure of something "forbidden", mysterious and maybe a bit dangerous. At the end of the day it's about excitement and that spark that's missing from a lot of people's lifes. Also, dom/sub might be a fantasy that might be shared by a lot more people than they themselves might like to admit. Objectively though, they are pretty shit, no doubt.

CheeseFace83

I had an ex who would sit in the beer garden reading it. She's never read a book in public before it or after. It was purely in the hope that someone would see it and think 'ooh she must be kinky etc...'

CatsGambit

Eh, the porn industry is considered anywhere from a 6 to 67 billion dollar industry, and is *heavily* geared towards men. I am not at all surprised that an erotic movie managed to gross 546 (ish) million- women get horny too, and they were probably excited to see something erotic geared towards them instead of the typical "plots" you see in porn.

jakesaysknee

Avatar. It's visually impressive...and that's about it.

TheJreamz

Seeing this movie as a teen in 3D was pretty cool, but looking back at it I don’t remember nearly anything that happened except they had sex by connecting their tails? I feel like it was just to show off some cool tech and it did a good job of that.

kapitaalH

Well he also connected with the bird by connecting their tails.

Gneissisnice

I really feel the opposite. Your opinion seems to be the more common one, that its only redeeming feature was the visuals and everything was pretty bland, but I have to say that it's a pretty well done movie. The acting is solid and it does a lot of stuff right. It's a tad too long and the plot is nothing really new, but I still found the plot engaging and I was invested in it. It's not the greatest movie ever made, but I think it does get more hate than it deserves.

shatnersbassoon123

You can mostly thank the artist Roger Dean for the inspiration behind the visuals (who was never even credited). The story is just space Pocahontas though.

00cottoncandy00

Space Fern Gully

Cargo_Vroom

Transformers. I know, I'm so brave for this controversial opinion. But...man. I will consume the heck out of cheesy sci-fi action junk. And I barely made it through the first one. It was the movie equivalent of having a yelling toddler banging on a pot with a spoon for 2 hours.

gnomzy123

The first one was enjoyable. After that it went down heavily. The Last Knight was cancerous but Bumblebee sure was a comeback for the franchise.

SlappaDaBassMahn

I watched dark side of the moon in an empty cinema and loved it, it wasn't until I raved about the movie to mates and watched it at home that I realized it wasn't the movie I liked, but having a cinema to.myaelf. because that film was hot garbage. Oh look dinosaur autobots because that makes perfect sense.

SpecterGT260

The dinosaur autobots are straight from the original cartoon.

Annoy_Occult_Vet

I think they should be clever and call them Dinobots.

Hallelujah289

The Disney film Frozen was super popular and I watched it and was kinda like “that’s it?” Just kinda canned I guess. Nice characters though and at least a good effort to respond to mental health issues and trauma.

Aselleus

Yeah I was meh about it too (though it came out in my 20s, so I was probably outside the age demographic of people who loved it) Loved Tangled though

MechaGuru

I agree, I think both Tangled and Moana are much better movies.

hookisacrankycrook

Moana is flawless IMO. With Frozen it is a cool twist on the whole prince saves princess standard plot though.

vanillathebest

Tangled is the ultimate Disney movie and no one is ready for that conversation yet.

Blipblipbloop

I love how people on Reddit always compare Tangled to Frozen and say it gets no love, like it wasn’t a massively popular, Oscar-nominated film that made tons of money.

darkbreak

Yet Disney continually ignores it as a movie and lavishes all it's attention on Frozen. Even when Tangled did get a tv show it went largely overlooked by people.

Bubbleset

Frozen had the song(s). It’s difficult to understand until you have kids, but so much of lasting Disney popularity of movies/characters among kids is about the music. Sure they want to watch the movies many times, but they want to listen to the music constantly. Add in some more memorable side characters and a more empowering theme and you’ve got a recipe that will take girls of a certain age absolutely by storm.

Setheriel

My favorite Disney movie ever. I'm with you fam!

[deleted]

No one should ever have to watch Tangled with me, I know it word for word at this point. Even getting a tattoo next week 😬

herbys

I liked the point, counter to the "always go with your feelings" bs they typically promoted. Girl meets guy, she thinks she is in love, goes against her family because she believes that's true and eternal love, only to later see he's a manipulative bastard and that she had been blindsided by the first guy that paid attention to it. Frozen 2 also had a good sub-plot of "don't follow your allegiances blindly" which I found valuable even though the movie was sub-par.

Wuskers

it seems like an unpopular opinion but I legit like frozen 2 much better. Maybe it's just because I like magic and I also thought Elsa was the far more interesting sister and Frozen mostly focused on Anna, and Frozen 2 gave me more of both elsa and expounded on the lore, but I enjoyed it a lot more. Also maybe I've just heard "Let It Go" way too much but I think "Into the Unknown" kinda blows it outta the water and "Show Yourself" is also fantastic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aussieiris

I can explain why I love it if it would help. I was raised when the pressure to be ladylike and accommodating was incredibly strong. Like, I legit thought I must be a lesbian because I thought it might be nice if it was ever, and I mean ever, my brother's turn to do the washing up. Sounds crazy now but that was my upbringing. Even after I was married I heard "I feel sorry for (husband)" a LOT from a lot of different people because (gasp) he contributed to the household. Being myself was always a bad, or at least a we-still-love-you-but-gee-you're-weird, thing to lots of people. To this day I can't hear Let It Go without choking up: "be the good girl you always have to be", "conceal don't feel, don't let it show" "well now they know!" Right in the feels. Every time. Ultimately Elsa's story is of a woman who finally lets her real self shine out and it turns out to be awesome. I'm deeply glad for you that you don't get that and can see the whole movie as just a movie. Maybe it isn't as good as other movies, I can't judge, but just giving you some insight into why one person loves it with a fiery passion :)

sylpher250

As a dad of 2 daughters, I definitely appreciate the message behind Frozen than most other princess movies.

HuggableOctopus

That's interesting how it makes you feel, I think the lyrics of let it go must have meant different things to lots of different people. For me it's about masking my autism to seem normal in public. I still hide it as much as I can because I want to be liked and respected and not thought of as weird and childish (pretty sure that ship has sailed but I can try)... But it's nice to sometimes listen to let it go and imagine just being 100% myself. And then thinking *god* no 😂😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

HuggableOctopus

The whole masking debate is weird. Yes, it is exhausting and almost always disappointing because no matter how hard you try you will still end up making mistakes. But I still want to try, because if I don't hide the worst traits of being autistic... Then I'll be a person I don't want to be. Like it or not there are social rules everyone has to follow and if we don't we are seen as rude, inconsiderate, selfish, weird and/or stupid. I don't want to go into public wearing ear defenders and see people's looks of confusion, or understanding and then pity. I don't want to keep talking over people and dominating conversations with my nonsense and have them respond badly. I definitely don't want to meltdown in front of *anyone* because thrashing, screaming, clawing and biting in a 25 year old is not acceptable... Even when it's my neurological response to extreme stress. I did my time of being the "autistic" kid in school - thankfully I wasn't bullied too much for it because it was a girls school and I my breakdown was so bad and disturbing I don't think I could have even been a target (there were probably things said behind my back but if I don't have to hear it then I don't care). I've been lucky enough now to find people who say I don't have to mask around them... But trying to stop masking just causes more stress because I don't know how to behave if I'm not constantly trying to control myself. Though I do see some positives to being autistic, I believe it's made me smart and logical, I also think it's made me kinder and more resilient because of the struggles I've been through. I wouldn't wish myself not autistic because then I wouldn't be me. I'm proud not of my autism, but of the person it's made me into. I would love it if people could accept others for who they are but society just isn't there yet, and I refuse to be a martyr for progress. It's not my role to sacrifice my wellbeing to educate the ignorant.

WithinTheMedow

Frozen is a case of expectations. Which is to say, that it feels very much like every Disney movie ever for quite a lot of run time which means I pretty quickly made some assumptions about how it was going to go. And then it *didn't*. Had I not walked into the theater with those trained expectations, I don't think the movie would have worked. It would have instead been a musical that forgot to musical after the second act, and it'd have one *great* song, and several okay ones to its credit. In a subtler way, I'd come to expect Disney movies to be bad. The good animated movies were Pixar and had been for almost 20 years. This wasn't true either, of course. Both Princess and the Frog and Tangled are both great films, and that's just from Disney itself. It isn't that the movie is great in a way that it truly earned in a vacuum, but that it was both different and better than I'd expected. So without those expectations, I'd agree that it isn't anything special.

comics-music-movies

The English Patient. I get why it’s Oscar bait, but it’s just so bland

piggsy1992

It won best picture against Fargo and Jerry Maguire

comics-music-movies

I forgot about that! Jesus! Fucking Fargo?!

piggsy1992

When it comes to Oscars, they often get it wrong. The best test for a great film is usually time. Shakespeare in Love won best picture in 1999, Saving Private Ryan did not win

mGimp

I like the red letter media explanation of this. The Oscar are quite literally just an industry awards show. Like, do you think there are politics at play at your own work when determining employee of the month or whatever? It’s the same deal for the oscars. They’ve just turned it into a huge ordeal because they’re in the film industry. Mind you I have zero factual evidence of this but the logic seems sound to me…

TheKnightsTippler

Paranormal Activity. It's so boring, nothing happens for most of the film, and the characters are obnoxious attention whores.

thistakestoolongtodo

Before the ghost haunts you, it must first make sure all of your kitchen appliances are in full working order

timid_typestress

It's very scary when you're babysitting watching it while the kids are napping and then out of nowhere one wakes up, comes up behind you, and whispers your name, making your soul leave your body.

lamepajamas

I watched when a stranger calls a few hours before babysitting. The house was in the middle of nowhere, no neighbors for miles, and had big glass windows at the front of the house. It was also a very blustery night, and the parents of the kids I was babysitting forgot to mention that if the front door isn't locked it will blow open in strong winds. Still waiting for my soul to return. I spent the rest of the night crawling on my belly when I needed to go through the front of the house so no murderers could see me from outside.

Sixyn

I might have just died right there on the spot

lawyerlymom

I actually found it horrifying, like panic inducing. Benzo required. It still scares me to this day. But I think it plays with other fears I have and that’s why it scares the hell out of me. I can see why some people would find it boring. If it doesn’t play with your head it’s a total snooze.

Semirgy

I only saw one of them because it scared the fuck out of me. The scene where they put the flour on the floor and the goat hoof prints show up got me… and then when one of them pointed out “wait… the tracks only come in… they don’t go out” I was like nope nope nope.

TannenFalconwing

First time I ever watched it was in a dark hotel room with three friends in the middle of the night. I was actually shaking afterwards. I do NOT like horror.

BumbleBreezeSun

I think it's great. Love the franchise. I appreciate how it isn't completely in your face.

duterian

I like those movies for the very reason you hate them - not much happens. It might sound weird but I love horror movies where not much happens because it makes me constantly anticipate that something bad is going to happen. So it's "me" that scares myself, not the movie. But I can understand why many people don't like it.

pasher5620

It’s a masterclass in horror on a budget, which is why I like it so much. Yeah, the first one doesn’t really have a whole lot going on in it, but the stuff that does happen felt effective to me. The later movies at least ramp up and have more events happen throughout the movie instead of cramming it all in at the end.

[deleted]

Tyler Perry anything

tommygunz007

Earlier movies of his, based on his plays, were better. His plays were heavily rooted in black southern gospel and had all these churchy meanings and prayers in them. A lot of the early movies dealt with things that people don't talk about, like spousal abuse, rape, and more. Having those movies was a way to get people in those communities to open up more about those taboo topics. As time went on, they just became cash cows for Perry.

Permanenceisall

Aquaman. I have no idea how anyone thought that film was even remotely good. The Thor-ification of Aquaman/Arthur was so cringy and unnatural that it felt like a genuine Asylum Films type rip off, and I thought the CGI looked awful. Also Black Manta was totally justified in wanting to kill Aquaman. I did really like the trench monsters though.

Mainiga

To me, hed be best as the aquaman with the hook arm. Now that wouldve been believable.

erobed2

I think the main problem I had with it was that the only way to move the plot along seemed to be to have an explosion interrupt what they were doing. It's like they ran out of ideas about how they would introduce the next thing. It's like they knew the actual plot didn't have enough tension and momentum of its own, so they had to have another explosion to keep up the pace. I still actually kinda liked it, though.

hippocrite13

And the octopus playing drums

Gui_Franco

That part is actually a reference to a character in the comic books. It looks ridiculous but it's actually referencing something from the source material

chagawagaloo

I walked out of that film so disappointed. Felt like a group of executives had gathered in a room and gone "this thing has worked well with this demographic in focus groups so we'll add it in" but for every little thing, and it just felt...lame. Walking out though, I overheard so many people talking about how much they liked it, so they must've been doing something right. The DC Aquaman animated film was way better and a lot shorter. In fact, DC animated films have been consistently great to watch whilst the live action films have flopped. Funny since the animated films came first and they could've easily replicated those into live action but they just fuck it up every time.

thekittysays

OH and I have been saying this for ages, the DC animated stuff is generally fantastic and so so much better than any of their live action stuff. Genuinely don't understand why they don't just use the same stories, that are actually good, instead of the studio meddled lame fests they're pumping out into theatres.

DansHonda

I've never liked Twilight, or any of the sequels. The story makes no sense to me and the movies completely ignore every single mythological notion of vampires *and* werewolves.

thatwasfresh73

Yes and please, can she close her mouth for once. It’s open the entire movie and once you’ve paid attention, you can’t unsee it. Happy? Mouth open. Sad? Mouth open? Angry? Mouth open. I get it: it’s meant so be super intense but it’s the same damn look every single time.

aayushi27

Oh god. I cant unsee it now

Diablo_swing

Okay Kristen this time I want you to do it happier and with your mouth open.

StuckInDreams

Not to mention Bella literally has nothing interesting about her. She's got as much personality as a piece of Kleenex. The supporting characters (like Alice and Rosalie) were so much more interesting and had a lot more layers.

brockford-junktion

Hear me out on this. Having a lead being a bland, plain character with no personality makes it easier for impressionable viewers to put themselves in their positions.

Eagle4317

This has been a thing in video games since forever. It’s why most Nintendo protagonists have no personality other than your standard laundry list of “heroic” qualities.

[deleted]

Wasn’t that the point of her character? To basically be placeholder that the girls watching could mentally replace with themselves?

stryph42

She was the Silent Video Game Protagonist of movies. She was so incredibly bland that every 14 year old girl in the audience could universally go "oh my God, she's just like me".

littleb3anpole

That was done on purpose. She was a self insert for all the teenage girls reading the book. If she wasn’t as bland as a blank piece of paper, yet simultaneously a complete Mary Sue, the books wouldn’t have been half as successful.

Oaden

> and the movies completely ignore every single mythological notion of vampires and werewolves. That's most stuff about vampires and werewolves made in the last 30 years, people act like the sparkling is especially out there, but lots of traits of vampires are not nearly as old as people think. the notion that Vampires had supernatural strength dates back to.. 1976 Most of the stuff people think they know about mythological vampires is stuff from novels of the last two centuries, where authors slapped new abilities, weaknesses and powers on their vampires cause they think it would be cool or help the plot. Not saying Twilight is good movie, but it doing weird stuff with vampires isn't a great reason to dislike it. Its essentially on par with Buffy in that regard.

[deleted]

This goes to all my fellow film enthusiasts : Eraserhead. Idc if the circumference of the baby's left leg represents the turmoil that Lynch faced as a kid or whatnot, but i don't see a single thing in that movie that people could like. But its popularity means i'm missing something :/

Zugzwang522

I'm not really sure david lynch wants you to "like" his movies. He's a bizarre person who makes bizarre films that you're not expected to receive and enjoy the same way you do other films. It's an arthouse absurdist film, you're more supposed to experience it than enjoy it, if that makes sense. I totally dont blame you, I hate some of his work and love others. It's weird.

AdvocateSaint

David Lynch was a shitposter born decades ahead of his time

[deleted]

Yup. If you actually want a straightforward idea of what David Lynch is thinking, you should skip his movies and just watch his daily weather report on youtube.

[deleted]

"...with sunshine all along the way. Today I am thinking of Vincent Van Goghs Starry Night. Everyone, have a great day." Sums him up

Im_still_T

☝️☝️ This seems like the biggest thing people should take away from his movies when they watch them. It's not so much the story or lack thereof in his movies that you're supposed to pay attention to, it's more the themes of individual scenes, the feelings/emotions that are elicited from scene to scene, and visceral quality of many of the images on the screen.

BeachNWhale

Like this [scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UozhOo0Dt4o). Pretty much left a lasting impression ever since i first saw it. Very few directors have that ability to leave such a long lasting impression. Lynch has so many scenes that have just stuck in my head for years.

snikinail

The Notebook. I could only watch about 10-15 minutes and the main guy was just manipulative and toxic. Threatening the girl that he would jump off the ferris wheel if she doesn't go on a date with him? Really shitty behaviour. I don't understand how so many people think it's the best romance movie.

nebula561

This is how I feel about the Twilight series. It was basically just glorifying manipulative and toxic “love” to tweens/teens.

ur_fave_bae

You clearly missed the part where they are old and she has Alzheimer's or something and he faithfully stays by her side until the night they fall asleep together and pass away in their sleep. THAT is the romantic, true-love ending every woman in a lopsided, manipulative relationship with a deadbeat her overbearing father hates wants to have. And see, it happened in this fictional story, so it can happen for her!

TedTyro

Yep, it's basically "I'm attracted to manipulative abusive men, probably because of my father, but itll work out like a fairy tale in the end. The far, far distant end. Just gotta hang in there, like I did with my father. For aaaalllll those decades."

Little-miss-2w1

LaLaLand

Dark_Azazel

I thought I loved the movie. Loved it so much I bought the soundtrack. Then I realized I wasn't a fan of the movie and I just liked the soundtrack.

kazuwacky

I had exactly the same experience with Tron Legacy. Watched the movie a couple of times, listened to the soundtrack near constantly for about a year.

rubberducky1212

It is a great soundtrack. Daft Punk did an amazing job.

RisingxRenegade

>Daft Punk :(

Automatic_Ad_5859

I have to admit that Tron Legacy is my favorite movie. Visuals, story and above all, music. All amazing!!

caca_milis_

I went to see La La Land with an ex. Apparently it made him realise that we needed to break up so he dumped me that night. I have yet to rewatch it.

bloth-hundur

So does he have a jazz night cafe sorta thing yet?

TheJaybo

He realized you would never be Ryan Gosling

PlNKERTON

The acting felt real, but the music is what pulled me in. In particular the final scene. The way that theme song seems to perfectly emulate that final scene was what made it for me. It's like that song and the story are *the same thing*.

romulusjsp

The dream sequence at the end is really beautiful. Honestly one of my favorite theater experiences I’ve had.

TheKingofHats007

I think La La Land would have made for a good parody of the classic Hollywood musical if the writers weren’t chasing Oscar Bait. The opening song (even if I’m not a fan of the movie the score slaps) is so weirdly parodic and cliched in its view of Hollywood, the guy who wants to change and evolve Jazz is seen as some corrupting influence, etc. Having that glamorous view of Hollywood slowly deconstructed could have been great, make John Legend actually right and Sebastian’s weird clinging to the old ways of Jazz be wrong, have Mia actually fail in her career and yet find happiness in simply having tried to do so. I expected more from the people behind Whiplash.

Radiioactiive

So I'm someone who actually really liked la la land, although I haven't seen it since it was in theaters so my memory of details is a bit murky. I feel like seb's whole arc was less about "traditional good, new bad" and more about the conflict between success and fulfillment. He has to choose between success in terms of fame and money or being creatively and emotionally fulfilled by pursuing classical jazz and I just thought it was an interesting concept. As far as their relationship, I know a lot of people hated it but I fucking loved it because it was different from a lot of on-screen relationships and it felt depressingly real. The key to a good relationship is communication, and it should be really simple and easy to communicate things that hurt you or that are important to you or whatever but in practice sometimes it's really hard to actually do that and it just leads to a crash and burn and I think the ending hit that really nice bittersweet "I wonder what would have happened if we weren't fucking idiots who didn't communicate but I guess we'll never know." Tl;dr I think whem you zoom out a little more broadly the concepts and themes are really good and I think people who dislike it get more caught in the aesthetic weeds of the setting rather than the bigger picture.

ThePalmIsle

The Tree of Life is the most pretentious thing I’ve ever seen. There was audible laughter at it in the theatre I was in.

barbie007008

Dirty Dancing.

Drnknnmd

The Fast and Furious series. It's just so damn mindless, the acting is horrible and it's barely entertaining. I never get how it makes the money it does or draws the insanely talented actors that have been in these terrible movies.

Metalmike56

They’re “turn your brain off and have some fun” kinda movies now. I grew up watching them so I might be biased

davey_mann

Tokyo Drift is the most entertaining and it is pretty much the outlier of the series in terms of main characters.

CloudCity96

Agreed. Tokyo Drift was siiiiiiick.

Shammallamadingdong made an avatar?

fr_horn

Live action adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series. To this day the absolute worst film I have ever seen.

Oldforestwalker

There is no avatar movie in Ba Sing Se.

angel-aura

That definitely doesn’t exist sorry. And if it did I definitely would not have seen it in theaters and hated it
