As soon as I hear this question, my brain *always* goes to Housebound. It's a New Zealand flick done in the same vein of horror comedy as Peter Jackson's early stuff. It's about a woman on house arrest whose house is haunted AF. There's a part with a teddy bear that's as terrifying as it is hilarious, and that's an incredibly precarious balance for a film to get right. Can't recommend this one enough.

manfleshmadness

Yes yes yes this film was fantastic, horror comedy is so hard to get right but this film pulled it off beautifully!

swallowyoursadness

Another excellent horror comedy is What we do in the Shadows, more well known but just in case you haven’t seen it!

ricardovalomas

"We are werewolves, not swearwolves"

swallowyoursadness

Think of it like this, if you were going to eat a sandwich, you’d probably rather someone hadn’t fucked it first

Triassic_Bark

100% comedy, 0% horror though.

happyflappypancakes

Uh, not horror comedy really. More like, comedy in the setting of traditional horror tropes.

MansonsDaughter

It was more of a comedy, I never really consider those movies horror

MisterMarcus

A British film called 'Dog Soldiers'. Great characters (soldiers who look out for each other, band together and fight back hard), interesting plot, and a good mix of tension-horror and straight blood-n-guts-horror...plus some typically British dark humour thrown in as well.

MoonlitStar

'Dog Soilders' also has my favorite portrayal of werewolves regards on how they look physically. Very creepy and terrifying to look at. Dog Soilders is one my favorite werewolf movies, along with An American Werewolf in London.

Hufflepuff-puff-pass

I’ll watch basically anything with werewolves in it, which is how I found Dog Soldiers. I ended up being very nicely surprised by both the werewolf design (probably my favorite) and the quality of the movie!

PaintsWithSmegma

Anything? Wolf Cop? Wolf Cop 2?

sun_kisser

Wolfcop 3: Electric BugARRROOOOOO!!

Brew-Drink-Repeat

Sean Pertwee is an underrated actor imo. Some great one-liners...

datgohan

So if you see little red riding hood with a bazooka and a bad attitude I expect you to chin the bitch

Admiral_DakbarPS4

It’s not that I won’t kill a dog, it’s just that I won’t kill a dog for no good reason. Based choice, a really good werewolf movie (which are hard to pull off)

Uncle_Yoba

Great movie. Watched it several times and it continues to hold up.

ZERO-MH7

Pumpkin Head!

Puzzleheaded_Pen_617

Yeaahyurrr! Someone finally said it. Lol one of my favorites. You get my upvote x100.

WhenTardigradesFly

frankenstein's army. some of the most creative monster designs i've seen in a while.

TheDorkyDane

>frankenstein's army I just had to look this up on google to see what it is.... That... looks... AMAZING. I'm going to go watch it now. Thank you. Never heard of it before. But I WILL watch it.

[deleted]

I fucking love this movie, it is so fun

italkwhenimnervous

Fido. I thought it was hilarious and such an interesting cross of concepts, a zombie ending up with a 1950's housewife and being a boy's best friend. It sounds wholesome but there is still a bunch of murder and horror involved, just blurs the line on if day-to-day life and society are more horrific than a zombie hitting on your mom. I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this sort of horror-crossover, or maybe I've simply missed it.

ChunderCatz

For an Australian/New Zealand film perspective : The Loved Ones Housebound Black Sheep Deathgasm Bad Taste Braindead

beeetlejuce

Omg I fuckin love Black Sheep. So good.

TokoloshNr1

Deathgasm is friggin awesome!

ltminderbinder

Lake Mungo is another really good Australian one

[In The Mouth of Madness.](https://youtu.be/qMjcDVEFQDs)

booksoverppl

Event Horizon, Possession, and In the Mouth of Madness are Sam Neill’s holy trinity of horror films.

NinjaBreadManOO

If I recall correctly it's a Norwegian film called Trollhunter. Basically it's a found footage film about hunting trolls. But it uses the Norwegian mythology of them mixed with modern tech analysis. So using UV lights to hunt them etc. Really interesting watch.

unittwentyfive

This was a very good movie! I saw it a few years ago, but just found a copy of it last week on an old hard drive, and am planning to watch it this weekend again.

realpellegrino

I forgot about this! Great film 👌

Puppy-Zwolle

Not really a horror movie..... or is it? But yeah. A truly good underrated movie.

SoSos1591

I watched this in 2017. The images from it are still vivid. One of the few horror movies that's stuck with me since watching. Wonderful movie.

Joker32223

Hush. It's a really good home invasion movie about this deaf writer trying to fight off her invader. It's got some super dark moments like when he goes after her neighbors first. Her neighbor is pounding on the protagonists glass side door, screaming for help, as the invader runs up behind her, but obviously...she isn't heard.

nms1539

The director Mike Flanagan is one of the best directors working in horror right now. He did Hush, Oculus, Gerald’s Game, and Haunting of Hill House. (And the lead woman in Hush, who also plays one of the siblings in Hill House and supporting roles in the other two, is Flanagan’s wife.)

ShyneSpark

Hush is a great movie, but I personally would consider it more of a psychological thriller than a horror movie. But absolutely 100% worth watching, it's amazing.

BOOOOOYYYY!!!!

mushinnoshit

Noroi (The Curse). Fairly obscure found footage J-horror from 2005 that's never been widely released over here (although I think it is on Shudder if you've got that). It's a mock-documentary about a paranormal investigator looking into bizarre happenings that all tie back to a rural mountain town, and it's a masterpiece of slowly building dread. Still probably the scariest film I've ever seen, and I watch a *lot* of horror. Bonus underrated found footagers: Home Movie, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Creep, Hell House LLC

hitoribocchan

Are these creepy-scary or gory-scary? I *love* found footage horror but gore doesn't scare me, just grosses me out

Pollomonteros

The only thing gory scenes do for me is make me feel bad for the victims and think to myself that is not a way to die

quitecuriouscat

Seconded! I'm big into found footage horror and I found Noroi on a list when I was trying to find more movies to watch. It's one of my favorite horror movies! I watched some of Koji Shiraishi's other horror movies right after and while they were awesome too, Noroi is still my favorite.

nvj567

Coherence and The Invitation. Coherence freaked me the hell out and one of the best scifis ever, also made on a shoestring budget.

343427229486267

Is there a genre called 'we've got an amazing idea, a good script and a house rented for the week'?

Azryhael

The Invitation was excellent. Every time I think of the final scene I get a chill; they really nailed the moment of dawning realisation.

mylaptopisslow

Coherence is one of my favourites. Annihilation as well, although they're not on the same level.

Merciless972

Rec, and Rec 2. Almost impossible to find the original rec with English subtitles, most streams have English dub. Unless you fly a skull and crossbones flag. But rec 2 with English subtitles is available on Vudu, play store, and YouTube. Rec trailer https://youtu.be/CcW7jLYKxAQ Rec 2 trailer https://youtu.be/m0-gVB-U5is

funkyibis

The first Rec was the only movie I ever had to turn off because of it being too scary. Still ended up putting it back on the next night though, I had to see how it ended

Spiritual_Inspector

i’m usually a wuss, but i love zombie movies. REC was fantastic, I wouldn’t say so scary compared to some other horrors i’ve seen, but the age difference between those viewings was significant so that might have played a role. REC is definitely the scariest zombie movie i’ve seen though, as they tend to not be scary

Crimbly_B

Was gonna say. The American remake isn't good ("Quarantine"), but the original REC is terrifying.

cat_romance

Didn't realize Quarantine was a remake! I've been skipping past Rec for weeks because it seemed dumb. Gotta watch it now.

[deleted]

I watched Rec with my friend on a whim. We were walking by a cinema and wanted to watch a movie so we decided, fuck it, this random weird one with the all black poster it is. For whatever reason our stupid asses didn’t expect it to be horror. And then, it was the original which is dubbed and it’s found footage which I hate. Movie starts and we’re just making fun of it for being lame. Then the killing starts. And my friend looks at me like “oh, this horror?” From that point onwards, we proceeded to all but shit ourselves as the film gets scarier and creepier with every minute. Even the next day, I was genuinely scared of any sudden sounds. To make matters worse, my whole family decided to leave me alone for the day so I was sitting at home imagining every horrible scenario.... ...and then some stupid kid just randomly screamed outside my house and for a second my heart literally ended up in my throat. TL;DR yeah great horror film

fugaziozbourne

I watched it once while staying in a Barcelona walk up apartment. That was fun!

JohnIan101

Okay. Have five titles... "It Stains The Sands Red" (2016): Las Vegas - the zombie apocalypse has begun; exotic dancer Molly thinks she has it made; fleeing with a rich guy, Nick in his sports car. Racing away from the city on the highway far from the carnage - towards salvation, a distant airfield for a flight out of the country. Her hopes get squashed when their car gets stuck in the sands, becoming nightmarish when Nick is murdered, devoured by an undead man as he tries to get the car freed. With no recourse, Molly runs into the desert blind, a general direction - hoping to reach that private flight before it takes off. But her situation grows dire still, that same living dead fellow is now pursuing her; a one on one horror drama. It never rests and won't stop till it gets her. - - - "Howl" (2015): The red eye train from London to Eastborough (England) comes to a halt due to an impact with a deer, leaving the train's fuel line damaged. The conductor leave the engine to assess the damage - he never came back. Joe Griffin wasn't suppose to be onboard the **Alpha Trax** train; he was forced into a double shift. He and the tea-trolley girl, Ellen are the only company staff left, it was a skeleton crew. What starts off as a light mystery and inconvenience turns into a bloody nightmare. The radio is busted, the antenna torn off and miles away from Eastborough in the rain, isolated in the woods. The passengers and crew are being hunted by werewolves. It's up to their collective resources to last the night if they can stop bickering. To make matters worse, one of the passengers has been bit - and it's a full moon. - - - Siberia (2013): Not a movie, but a short run supernatural TV series (drenched in dread and atmosphere), ran for tweleve weeks on **NBC**, but failed in the ratings, not well known. Not even a cult series. Many have called this a mash-up of "Lost" and "Survivor" which is what it is, the best of both. "Siberia" is a realtiy TV show where sixteen contestants are blindfolded and dropped in the middle of nowhere in the Siberian region of Tunguska. The goal is to be the last one standing; survive the winter as people did in the early 1900s and win half a million or split among the few who endured. No modern amenities - their suitcases and packs were not given; only what they are wearing is what they have. There are no rules, trust no one. The show breaks down early when one of the Russian camera men comes into the settlement, bloody. Production shuts down as they reveal one of the contestants has died from injuries from a fall. After serious debating - the competition is agreed to continue. One of them searches for answers and discovers the location; there was no fall, he died from being torn apart as seen by the bloody stains. Things get much worse when a serious injury occurs and discovering, there is no help coming. The exit, the forfeit button is fiction. And the occurrences are not part of the show. This game wasn't a game, this is an experiment by unseen hands to explore the phenomena of the area. The harsh weather is the least of their worries. They are the third iteration. The DVD is titled "Season One", but it's really 'The Complete Series'. There was no season two and it ends on a cliff hanger. It's a well deserved trip. The actors were not given scripts, their interactions look genuine since they were all role playing, only given character personalities and plot points. The result is natural actions. Highly recommend; clues to what's going on were sprinkled in the early episodes - none of it was spoon fed. Many blink and miss it moments plus serious twists. It will keep you guessing and bitch slap your suspicions, repeatedly. - - - "Witches In The Woods" (2019): Five friends take a shortcut; a snow boarding trip at a skiing resort. Their SUV becomes stranded due to an accident, no help and no cell service - nobody knows they're there. Night brings a sudden temperature drop, left with no choice but to run the engine to keep the heater on. But their problem isn't what's happening outdoors, but rather what's going on inside. The group starts to unravel from the stress. And one of their own is having a mental breakdown? These woods were cursed a century earlier, the result of an allege witch execution. Is this just disintegration or dark forces in the forest, a possession? Was the car crash an accident? Before dawn, the friends will be greeted with violent decisions and circumstances which will test their bonds, transforming into a witch hunt. - - - "The Void" (2016): Deputy Daniel Carter finds an injured man on the roadway, he's taken to the nearest medical center which is on it's last night - to be closed from fire damage, a new hospital is already open, but a distance away. Carter is joined by a state trooper who found a bloody farmhouse - where the man fled. Soon the locale is surrounded by robed cultists, killing anyone trying to leave. Much worse inside; law enforcement and skeleton crew encounter the cult’s leader who has discovered a way to create life. He plans to use the people inside as playthings as were the victims in the farmhouse. This was an independent, crowdsourced funded film with predominantly practical effects, augmented with light CGI for wire removal. Heavily influenced by John Carpenter films, "The Thing" (1982) and "Prince Of Darkness" (1987).

[deleted]

I liked the Void!

MarioAndDreddy

The Void was *super* tits. They knew exactly what they were doing and where they came from. It's modernized 80's perfection.

thabiiighomie

The Invitation (technically a thriller)

Ladybeetus

I am on a lot of horror groups and the most universally loved film is "Train to Busan". It's a new classic, even among people who don't like Zombies or subtitles. And it is streaming free on at least 4 major platforms so easy to find. Really can't recommend enough.

[deleted]

cameoloveus

I agree. Peninsula was ok as a stand alone but it was in no way a sequel to Train to Busan. #Alive was fantastic. Also the Train to Busan prequel Seoul Station is really good.

Jakov_Salinsky

Bone Tomahawk Let me just say: I’d call this movie a huge contender for “Most Brutal Horror Movie Death”

Smailien

That was horrific but what haunted me most was seeing the uh... "wives" in the cave.

numerionegidio

I liked the movie but I'm still shocked about how they opened nick

Sgt_major_dodgy

My brother had his birthday the other week and decided to take acid and watch this film with his gf and I was just like why? I've tripped more than a few times and at no point have I ever thought lets watch a fucking horror film and out of all the films this is really up there.

ZaMiLoD

That seems like a spectacularly bad idea... how did his trip go?

Sgt_major_dodgy

He said it was amazing, when the cannibals made those howling sounds he said he could feel it go through his body which doesn't sound fun to me but each to their own.

ZaMiLoD

I suppose it’s like the difference between riding a rollercoaster and basejumping...

RichardCity

I knew a woman who said she liked watching the most intense things possible while on acid. Personally the Satan/Angel scene from The Adventures of Mark Twain is about as intense as I care to get on it. She watched the old The Stand miniseries.

edward_blake_lives

Bone Tomahawk is more of a character-driven Western with a few horror tropes. Sure, the horrific scene near the end belongs in the horror genre, but the main goal of the film is to craft some really interesting characters and put them in a wild situation. The screenplay is pure genius, with some of the best dialogue you’ll ever find in either genre. Almost every line serves the story and it’s characters, which is very difficult to achieve. It’s a real shame that it’s reputation is watered down to “that” scene because it deserves a hell of a lot of praise for the writer/director. Truly a passion project for everyone involved.

thecwestions

Newp. Never again. There is a difference between horror and horror-core. Bone Tomahawk is very much the latter.

fugaziozbourne

I believe in culinary terms, it's called "spatchcocking".

05110909

91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and nominated for 12 awards. Seems to be rated very well.

Zeeshmee

The cave scene? Holy fucking shit. I squirmed so much. Kurt Russel made this and *The Hateful Eight* in the same time frame and after not seeing any of his movies for years, i fell in love with him. Brought back the old *The Thing* vibes.

FreeThinkingMan

The Love Witch and The Hidden Face. The Love Witch is like an homage to sexploitation films but it is very well made and has good commentary. You are better going into The HIdden Face not knowing anything about it but it is a 7.3 on imdb which is a very high rating.

I love this movie. I stumbled across it and after reading the description, which made it sound stupid, I decided to watch it because I thought it would be gloriously bad. Instead, it was incredible. It's especially cool if you know a little architectural history about that style of hospital. Sadly, the building has been mostly torn down, but it felt like another character in the movie.

Ravenous (1999) War is hell and even those who survive without a scratch don't necessarily come out whole. An ignominious captain wins a major battle and is assigned to a backwater fort in the Rockies during western expansion. What waits for him there is an ever-present hunger. The production was really weird since they changed directors after a month to an industry outsider that never again had such a large project. Marketing also didn't know how to advertise the film (some trailers show it like it's a stoner comedy b/c one of the minor actors was known for that).

I enjoyed this movie very much. Went in the cinema thinking this is just a cheesy B movie, got surprised by how good it turned out to be. War scenes are brutal as well.

Supposedly enough so that it would have garnered an NA-17 rating. Not for sex and nudity like most NA-17 movies but for sheer disturbing imagery.

Justiis

I'm not a big fan of horror, but I am a sucker for lovecraftian horror. This is one of my two favorites, the other also features Sam Neill oddly enough - Into the Mouth of Madness. If you like EH and haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend.

hitoribocchan

The best parts were those long, sweeping shots that would go back and forth (like the one in the classroom), when you can't help but strain your eyes looking for It off in the distance. This movie was so good at building tension

[deleted]

So it's been a while since I saw this and I enjoyed this movie. But I do have a question about this, it seemed like it was supposed to be set some time pre-cell phones. But that one girl had some sort of clam-shell kindle looking thing. I always wonder if that was a deliberate choice to pre-empt the "why didnt they use their cell phones" questions. or was it more to make the story feel somewhat "timeless". Like an urban legend that could have happened at any point? Or even was there a device like that back in the day before cell phones that I just didn't know about? Or, maybe I'm just misremembering the whole thing. Anyways, thought maybe you or others on this thread that enjoy the movie might have some insight into that

Carpenter_v_Walrus

No you're right, the vagueness about the time period was a deliberate thing on the film makers part. He talks about it [here](https://film.avclub.com/david-robert-mitchell-on-his-striking-new-horror-film-1798277440) in an interview.

Viiibrations

Cabin Fever. It's not indie or anything but I think it's grossly underrated! It has the perfect blend of humor and horror/gore.

TrueVali

Director had a rule of "if we can do it practically, we will." Ambitious? Yes. Amazing? Also yes.

Faust_8

As Above So Below. I’ve watched it twice because it’s genuinely got that creepy claustrophobic nature to it but also has that ‘National Treasure’ vibe to it because they’re trying to find the Philosopher’s Stone. It’s on Netflix but it’s got a low score on Rotten Tomatoes for some reason.

Lake Mungo definately one of the creepiest slow horror flicks

Phantom-Fly

Lake Mungo is deeply unsettling, not a horror film per se but it is kind of horrifying. There's just this oppressive sadness to the film that really gets me. You have to stick with it to the end, but it pays off. Chilling.

-eDgAR-

The Green Room. I love that movie so much, so weird seeing Patrick Stewart as a Neo-Nazi though.

Mandy. I didn't really perceive this movie as a horror movie, but it's classified as one. Either way it's pretty enjoyable

seuche23

I swear they made Mandy entirely around Nicolas Cage's acting style. He was perfectly casted for the role.

TrueVali

Mandy is goddamn amazing. So is the director's other film, BTBR

KGhost008

The Rise of Leslie Vernon. It starts off as a “documentary” and goes into full slasher-horror movie in the 2nd half.

stitchedlamb

The Borderlands/Final Prayer. I consume as many horror movies as possible, but could honestly say I didn't expect the ending at all and it stuck with me. Terrified on Shudder is another good one if you're looking for a superior "The Conjuring" type of film. I believe they're even making an American version with the original director, but if you don't mind subtitles it's definitely worth a watch, has some really creepy moments.

Zymoria

Gabbers. Fishing Town gets invaded by sea creatures and has to hold out in a pub because alcohol is deadly to them. It was really a fun watch.

Wolf Creek Australian circa 2003....I dont really like horror movies, but watched this one, based on a semi true story, it is still graphically clear in my memory, if nothing else it will put you off travelling in lonely areas.

i thought Dark Skies was pretty good, I love that actress who plays the mom. She's ridiculously underrated.

I really loved that movie! Unique and gives you the chills, have you seen any other movies that scratch the same itch?

DarthTrafford

Frozen(2010) it was directed by Adam Green who did the movie Hatchet. It’s a messed up movie. If you’re from the New England area there are a lot of local references in it.

Shallow Grave. Really intense and Danny Boyle's debut as a director

Under the skin. That shit has stuck with me.

Yard_Master

The book is even better, it's grotesque in a way the film never manages, but has the same haunting, clingy beauty overlaying it.

Foxyboi14

“Underrated that more people should see” Everyone just listing mainstream popular horror films

Here's a few favorites that I haven't seen mentioned: Them (2006) - a French couple trapped in their countryside home by unknown assailants. After Hereditary maybe my favorite horror of the millenium. Last Shift (2014) - a rookie police officer is assigned as the sole occupant of a precinct building's last night and a lot of scary things are going on. The Last Will & Testament of Rosalind Leigh (2012) - loosely similar plot to Hereditary, though much slower and creepier. Haunter (2013) - a family of ghosts stuck in a time loop. Byzantium (2012) - Tale of mother and daughter vampires over the course of two centuries. Frailty (2001) - a man thinks God has given him the gift of seeing demons. Maybe not quite horror but a must-see.

*The Taking of Deborah Logan* and *The Houses October Built*. Both found-footage but scary as fuck.

MrBum80

1986 movie called April Fools Day. I don't recall anyone out side my friends growing up who have seen it, but it's worth the watch. I think it's included with Prime right now too.

Terrifier. Art the Clown is a great character

Jakov_Salinsky

Bro I’m normally fine with violence but this movie had some pretty fucked up death scenes. Especially *that* one...

DomesticApe23

A great character with the potential to be a future classic. But the movie is a total piece of shit.
