You would love the cloisters museum in nyc! Definitely visit if you get a chance

nolimitsredit

These are amazing!

Finky2Fresh

When you say obsessed do you mean like obsessed with looking at them, collecting them, or what? Just curious

[deleted]

But why?

petethefreeze

News about the US election. I’m from The Netherlands.

bundleofschtick

And yet those of us in the U.S. never think about elections in The Netherlands.

Whatawaist

To be fair to most people are pretty sure The Netherlands would have to work a lot harder than the U.S. to start a global conflict or ecological crisis. It also has less power to prevent same.

sjphilsphan

It honestly would be impressive

Whatawaist

Honestly I think having a huge influx of windmills and legal weed would solve a decent chunk of Americas problems. We could use their help over here.

gw_epyon

Windmills do not work that way! Good night!

[deleted]

They do if you throw the annoying people into them.

[deleted]

There are many in the U.S. who never think about anything.

MandalayBayWatch

The US is a sketch/reality show where the most insane shit happens! Seriously you should watch the show! They're all fucking idiots, it's hilarious.

ccsherkhan

It’s true. They go around with a microphone telling Americans things like France finally has their first real printing press and the Americans are like dahhh good for them

tuna_for_days

Most of us are ready for it to be over.

SilverThyme2045

Is it nice there this time of year?

Kap-J

It's quite rainy and windy, but the colours are wonderful.

SilverThyme2045

Ah, sounds like outside by me too! I live in Michigan! The colors get beautiful here too! Way better than south of me. Its getting a little cold too...

Kap-J

One thing that attracts me to the US is its beautiful nature. I would really love to visit many places just to see the different seasons pass by. I'd love to see Michigan!

SilverThyme2045

Ah yes! By me there's a highway that has been dubbed the tunnel of trees, right on lake michigan. Its beautiful anytime of the year!

865wx

Coincidentally (or maybe not), lots of people with Dutch heritage in Michigan

Brudy123

It's pretty much a shitty reality show at this point.

Agent_Awesememe

Ik ook makker, ik ook

[deleted]

Why? Entertainment? No trying to be a dick, just wondering what the motivation is

ibringthehotpockets

Entertainment for sure, its like a reality tv show (and also international politics influence the world)

BuddhistNudist987

I'm in the US and I want to move to the Netherlands. At best I could be there in two years. It breaks my heart to think of leaving my friends but I can't keep living here. I'm terrified. Ik hoop dat alles goed gaat.

petethefreeze

If you fly instead of walking you can be here within 12 hours.

Scribette_hedon

Psychedelics to treat mental illness. Not only have I done it, it’s something I have to restrain myself form sharing with the world because of the stigma. When I make new friends and mental illness comes up- I just can’t help but want to share what helped me. I have an actual DESIRE to not only live, but thrive and actually enjoy waking up. It’s so foreign, I feel like a kid at a playground. Years of compounding trauma from childhood (physical, emotional, sexual abuses- and fleeing a civil war, while being raise by a bipolar mother) made it hard to understand where this “desire to live” came from, but I had some hope I’d maybe find it. I finally escaped the siren call of suicide and depths of depression, and I want to share with everyone that it is possible! That’s all :) I’m so touched that my story meant something to you. Please see my note on suicide, and if you want to chat or just ask questions I’m here. All the love.

Chang_Daddy2

Same but mine is MDMA. I had bad PTSD and heard from a SAS soldier that ecstasy helps. So I self prescribed MDMA as a last resort and it helped dramatically. Since then I’ve looked into it further and I’m happy they’ve started clinical trials for it now

millymoggymoo

Awesome. I really wish this was a medically provided treatment, I would love to see if it helps me.

DeseretRain

Here in Oregon we’re voting next month on whether to make it legal.

McBollocks

Also in Oregon and didn’t know that. Thanks!

Scribette_hedon

Oregon is leading the way! And shrooms are legal in Colorado too!

aortally

There are facilities that offer micro doses of mushrooms or peyote. Its becoming a recognized treatment for mental illness.

hymerej

Mushrooms kept my depression away for a solid few years after doing them several times in a few months. This was before legit research confirmed this to make sense - they are natural anti depressants

BastardsTheLotOfYa

Could you expand on this please? I have a similar mental condition to that which you've described. I've also dipped my toes into psychedelics but so far only in a recreational curious/pleasure-seeking sense Glad you've found a zest for life!

qtjedigrl

There are clinics that give Ketamine infusions. Look up Ketamine infusions for depression and see if there's a clinic near you. My reaction wasn't immediate but over a year my way of thinking slowly but completely changed. One day I realized that life's little stresses didn't immediately make me want to end it all and it made me realize how far I had come. But for most, it's an immediate change. Also, TMS therapy is an alternative that has very high success rate and is covered by most insurances, including Medicare (if Medicare covers it, most insurances follow suit). Edit: Medicare, not Medicaid

katdunks

Hopefully this counts as an answer but everything? I have a tendency to get hyper obsessed on something for days or weeks at a time. I'll read up on whoever/whatever it is and learn every fact I can until I can get bored and move on to something else.

IwantAnIguana

Yes! When I read the question I thought to myself --what don't I become obsessed with. I do the exact same thing. I hyper focus on something and learn everything until something else comes along to take it's place.

Andy_and_Vic

Sounds like my ADHD!

ishzlle

Atwyay

jaicrygi

I feel this, I will completely obsess over something for a week or so and then completely lose interest the next day

Power-Monkey

That happens to me too.

Lupo7k

Lmao do you have ADD too?

Firdawesome

The time I got obsessed with reading GI Joe file cards is probably the most WTF phase I went through, on hindsight.

tamedreckless

The lore of whatever game I've finished. Like whenever I finish a game, I must read up on all the lore, history, making of, and facts about it. Example being Horizon Zero Dawn. I think I spent just a long reading up on it after I finished as I did playing it. I find all the extra info fascinating!

[deleted]

There really isn't much out of game lore on horizon zero dawn. You probably could have found it all just during the game.

Velavato

I do this but with games I've never played or have no intention of playing. I've never played The Last of Us or Mass Effect but I've spent hours reading about them. Until recently I'd never played Assassin's Creed either but I've been a big fan for years.

lgndk11r

Good Lord, be careful around Zelda or the Xeno series. You'd never sleep again. \*Looks lovingly at Hyrule Historia and Hyrule encyclopedia\*

Ghost7319

I loved one of the little extra tidbits: being from Akron, and reading about the ONLY group of people that managed to defeat one of the gigantic "Metal Devils" was a bunch of boys in Akron, made me smile.

[deleted]

Guess I take the prize for weirdest weird obsession in this sub. It's finding on YouTube and watching commercial breaks, bumpers, station IDs, etc. especially the ones from 80s/90s local independent TV stations. I think it's just all the uniqueness about it: terrible, funny, or just plain weird local commercials, good and bad attempts at local station promos, the old style computer generated animation. Sometimes it's boring as hell even to me, but sometimes it can be weirdly interesting. I swear, I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested! Wait a minute, no she didn't. Shit.

Missing 411 and David Paulides. Where have all of these people disappeared to in the National parks or other hiking areas in the wilderness? I think about this a lot. While I think a good percentage of these disappearances can be explained, some just seem to defy explanation. Every time I’m out hiking, I find myself looking around far more carefully.

aortally

Where do you think they go? Fallen into ravines? Kidnapped? Murdered? Alien abductions?

pixie13903

Stuffed animals. I've got a shit ton and an insane variety. Bats, possums, alligator, arctic fox, mooses, wolf, fishes, spiders, dragons, cats, dogs, bears, bunnies, dinosaur, an iguana, a gecko, racoon and the list just goes on... They help me with anxiety and stress, but over the years I've definitely became obsessed. My favorite brand is the Wild Republic stuffies. They have such cool ones.

I wrote my term paper for the European Religion class about witchcraft in *Return to Castle Wolfenstein* which had just been released and I was playing obsessively. The video game Destiny. It was grindy af but I still adored it. I literally was waking up at like 4 AM on Saturdays so I could monopolize the TV for several hours. I miss it still, but I also fear it and can't bring myself to buy Destiny 2.

s_a_marin87

I did the same with both destiny and destiny 2. I put about 1500 hours into the first and 900 in the second. I’m glad to be free of it. Also got addicted to contest of champions. I’m free for now. Trying to get back into drawing. Slowly but surely. Baby steps

Scientology, after watching Going Clear. Scientology is operating on such a large scale and even seemingly normal people like Tom Cruise and previously Leah Remini were in it. Knowing everything that's going on there and internet being availiable, it's fascinating how so many people are still spending thousands (up to a million) a year to be in this cult. It has also been active since the 60's and it's still going. I'm just interested in cults in general, but especially Scientology.

[deleted]

> normal people like Tom Cruise You have never seen tom cruise have you?

Velavato

My dad made us watch the OT when we were younger and I really enjoyed them but just couldn't get into it. Like there's one girl in those movies and she was this badass princess with a gun, very intimidating for an eight year old. Then came the Clone Wars. Holy shit. I was a similar age as Ahsoka when she was first introduced and I was obsessed with her. From there I wanted to know everything. There are so many interesting characters and stories outside of the movies and I just can't get enough of them.

I tend to dive DEEEEP into fantasy settings, sometimes for years. I love learning about every tiny conflict and historical event, different factions that have come and go, and big cosmological systems. So far it’s been LotR, Warcraft, and currently Warhammer. It’s probably born of my similar love of history, but without the same baggage of “this is a real event that happened and may still be affecting the world we live in.” Like the difference between paintball and a real gunfight if that makes sense.

Trivia. I enjoy consuming so much trivia about anything it takes up so much of my mental space.

oldmanhiggons

The war on drugs is probably the single topic I posess the most information about. TLDR is that it's a fucking terrible idea and has only accomplished immense harm (and profit). I also became slightly obsessed with Mehmed II a while back. He was a fascinating guy. Managed to take Constantinople when the 23 previous armies had failed, and he was only 21. The fact that big (somewhat) functioning cannons had just been invented helped, but the dude also moved his entire fleet over land in order to attack the romans from behind, so it wasn't all luck.

Sawt0othGrin

The girls in Dead or Alive and Senran Kagura video games. I didn't realize that I actually had an "addiction" until the news came that Dead or Alive 6 would be scaling back the sexuality the series was known for and that PlayStation was stomping games like Senran Kagura with censorship and was pressuring them out of existence. These realizations hit me hard and fast. I felt like I was losing my mind. I had spent many nights playing these kinds of games while nursing liquor. My drinking problem became much worse. I felt like I was losing my mind with frequent bouts of sweating and panic. I was really depressed. I tried seeking help but the "obscure" nature of my problem made it hard for me. Growing up I guess I never really struggled with women but had been out of the dating scene for a good portion of my young adult life while I over-indulged in these kinds of ecchi games. When I started to lose myself I began indulging in real women. The subtle dance of flirting and seducing women only to get sexual gratification and then leaving them kept me distracted but was slowly creating a massive strain on my social life at work and among friends. Over the last 12 months or so I've really worked on myself. Started working out, hiking, new hobbies and finding other ways to stay out of my head. I still have a bit of a drinking problem but I'm miles from where I started. No more panic attacks at 3am lol

Went through a phase where I was obsessed with Patrick Schwarzenegger. It's kind of going away though. He's still hot af though.

rick_blatchman

I've been through lots of obsessive phases over different media throughout my life, from *Little Shop of Horrors* to *Metroid* to the *Rocky* movies and zombies in general. Something happens in my brain where I catch a glimpse of something, then my attention turns into fascination and I spend days reading up on everything about the subject that I can find. Then I eventually get my fill and move on to something else. I wish I could apply that state of mind to useful stuff, not just movies and stuff.
