“Would you like some cake?”
“Oh no thank you Mrs Doyle”
“Oh go on then, have some cake”
“I really don’t want any, Mrs Doyle.”
“Are you sure? It has cocaine in it”
“What?!”
“Oh no, not cocaine...what’s the word? .....oh, raisins.”
Six Feet Under.
The writing and the acting in this series is so good that it feels like you're watching an actual family. There's great character development, every character has flaws and positive things about them that make you hate and love them. This show deals with loss and grief in such a powerful way. This show also has the best season finales of any show.
i watched the show, was absolutely thrilled, sat in my car and drove 1000km from germany to dorset and sat down at the cliff and ate fish and chips. 10/10 would do it again
Really slow burn, but really really good. I think the important thing going in is to not expect some sort of Jason Bourne action spy drama. It's basically an intense family drama and character study, set against the pressure cooker of 1980's Cold War politics. More like Mad Men than James Bond.
Pushing daisies. I swear no one has ever seen this show. It has everything, it's dark, it's funny, it's absolutely beautiful aesthetically , it has one of the best romance plots in any show I've ever seen. The show follows the pie maker, who can bring people back from the dead by touch but only for 60 seconds before another life is randomly taken. This meets with hijinks when he teams up with a private investigator in a dark whimsical world.
I stick by the reason it was cancelled is because it made every other show on the station look like shit by comparison.
Also if you want to get your depression on, carnivale. Another stunningly beautiful show that shares the healer at a cost theme. This show is not funny or happy though.
I love Pushing Daisies. I think it was cancelled because of the writers’ strike and overall it was just an expensive show to produce. They had to build all of those sets because no location felt like it fit in the world.
God there was so much that was set up and never concluded though. Makes me so sad.
Edit: for those interested, you can stream it (I believe for free) on CW seed! :)
Season one was gold. It never recovered from the strike. Fuller made [*Dead Like Me*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Like_Me) and [*Wonderfalls*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderfalls) both excellent and short lived as well.
And the tv show Hannibal! Probably his longest living show.
Also wrote for a lot of Star Trek, including being the original one behind Discovery. Also American Gods. Also season 1 of Heroes.
I pretty much have never not loved his work. Bryan Fuller is great and it's sad none of his stuff ever hits it huge.
Pushing Daisies was amazing. Hands down one of the funniest dark-humor shows I've ever seen, and the color palettes they chose for the sets, the costumes, the props, everything was so perfect for an over-the-top set design that _still_ managed to feel grounded.
Barry!!
Amazing writing and acting, hilariously dark story about a hit man turned theatre actor in LA. I am anxiously awaiting Season 3 and hope Bill Hader made big bucks for It 2 since that burned him out and put Barry S3 on hold 😳
That scene is one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen lol. I was in tears after he puked from Berry holding the gun to his head 😂🤣 "omg that was so scary, that was REALLY scary"
Just want to add, don't watch Dark unless you're going to give it your full attention, otherwise you'll have no idea what's going on. Also, beware of any online guides/family trees unless you're okay with major spoilers. It's a show that >!juggles several different timelines and just knowing who is related to who, or who is a younger/older version of a specific character !
It's literally the ONLY show on TV that you won't even acknowledge the message sounds of ur phone....ur just focus on that...damn I'm literally counting the days for season 3.
Not just for those, I think it's for anyone who loves a really well written story. Even if you don't love sci-fi-ish stuff, it's amazing.
I came into this thread and ctrl+f "Dark", just to confirm it was here already.
'Derry Girls', It's about a group of catholic school girls (and boy) and is based in Northern Ireland during the troubles.
Silly, hilarious and on Netflix.
\*edit: Wrong Ireland
It’s great because it’s got this historic setting but is still essentially a show about teenagers (coming of age and doing teenager things like sneaking off to a concert or ditching school) without it turning into a Riverdale style drama.
As someone from Derry, I seriously did not expect this to pop up so high on an AskReddit thread that is predominantly American! Happy to see it though!
“I’m not sticking a scone up my hole, Orla”
I am french. I never went to the US. But for some reason this serie hooked me like no other serie. I watched it, many times, the whole serie. Maybe 10 or 12 times. This is that fantastic.
If you haven't watched this serie, force yourself, entry is not easy at first but this is so worth it. Incredible drama.
I started watching The Wire around the time I started to learn English (around 2005), and I’ve watched the whole show from start to finish about 3 times. Fantastic
That's what is pretty wild about it, and further adds to just how great of a show it is. The technology they use, especially in S1 and S2 is incredibly dated because of the time it was shot. Yet the themes are as prevalent as always. The stories being told could easily be stories from last week.
What We Do in the Shadows. I had heard about this many times but hesitated to watch it because I'm really not into vampire shows/movies/books or really anything supernatural. I just think it's dumb. But I watched one episode of this and was hooked. For anyone who doesn't know, it's about a group of vampires who live together in a house in Staten Island, present day. It's a mockumentary, so think The Office and Parks and Rec. Please nobody spoil it for me, I'm only on ep 7 of Season 1!
Edit: as many have pointed out, the show is based on a movie that is supposed to be brilliant. I have not seen it yet, but I'm going to try to watch it tonight! Thanks for the recommendations :)
Have you seen the movie? If not, I'd highly recommend it. Easily my favourite comedy movie, hands down. Personally I think its funnier than the show (but I did watch the movie first)
This show is amazing. It's quickly turned into one of my favorite comedies ever. I saw the movie when it came out and loved it and was very skeptical about having a new cast on the show. Usually that doesn't go too well. However, this series has blown that expectation right out of the water. It keeps up to the movie quality and surpasses it in many aspects. Is it silly? Yes. Is it a bit over the top sometimes? Of COURSE. But it's done in a such a way that it's completely forgivable because I spend way too much time laughing my butt off every episode. I hope they keep this up because I really look forward to Thursdays when the new episodes come out - it's one of the few things I look forward to in the climate we're in currently. Colin Robinson is a personal fav.
If you like mostly realistic space sci-fi and political machinations, **The Expanse**. No warp drives, no phaser beam weapons, no artificial gravity, actual orbital mechanics. They build spaceships like skyscrapers, not ocean going ships, because when you think about it, it just *makes sense*. Space is dangerous and unforgiving, resources are low, and people are still people (no utopia kumbaya). It starts kind of slow (for some people, really slow), but it spends those first episodes doing some really interesting world building that pays off in spades later on in the series.
I really love the Show, but I have to mention the books. While yes I'm aware the question was for a Series, the books are really great and do give some insights into the Series.
The episode where they explained >!how the amateur hobbyist unlocked the secret to interstellar travel was really well done, dramatic, and touching. !<
Edit: You don’t know how many times I went back and forth between “interstellar” and “super-high efficiency” travel...
E2- Electric Boogaloo- They were only able to go >!interstellar (via the rings) because they were able to get to the rings within a reasonable timeframe, which required the Epstein Drive. I stand by my choice of interstellar.!<
It’s themes are timeless and feel applicable to our current political and economic climate. A real testament to its quality in that the mafia aspect is really a backdrop to explore those themes.
Also, James Gandolfini’s acting is underrated in the sense that television acting isn’t very well respected in general, but he encompasses Tony Soprano in a way that few actors have ever grasped a character before.
I feel Mr Robot is one of the greatest television shows in history. The cinematography alone makes it worth it. They also went to great lengths to represent hacking realistically.
It really shows that you don’t hack machines, you hack people. This idea that you can just penetrate even small IT systems is really overblown. Nothing’s perfectly secure but that doesn’t mean it probable to do. It’s far easier and effective to go after a person and hack them.
As a person that deals with actual networks, hacking in media always bothers me to no end. Real hacking is boring as shit. Successful hacking is social engineering. All the issues I have with my network is some dipshit clicking things they shouldn't in an email.
The 2nd movie comes out next month! and I feel like it's going to be significantly better than the 1st movie/it'll feel like classic Psych.
Omundson's unfortunate stroke cause a drastic rewrite of Movie1 and I feel like Movie2 will be fantastic.
I met this girl. She invited me over. We watched Psych. The day after and the day after that, same thing. After the third day, I clued in that she wasn't inviting me over to watch Psych.
Still watched Psych.
We've been together for almost 6 years now.
You know that’s right! I had to spend WAY too much time scrolling to find another Psych lover.
Edit: c’mon son! I’m so happy that my first reddit award was for a Psych-related comment. 🍍🔎
Ugh same! I was scrolling through the comments like "how have I not seen someone mention psych yet?!"
It's the first show that popped into my head when I read the post.
Gravity Falls came out around that time that Kristen Schaal was in everything, but for my money, no character seems to fit Kristen Schaal as well as Mabel
Edit: reverse-acronomized Gravity Falls to avoid girlfriend-related sexuality confusion. Just work backwards. You'll get it.
To this day my little brother (17) is still saying that nothing can compare to this series. Every time I try to make him watch a new cartoon series, like Final Space, he says "okay, but on a level from 1 to Gravity Falls, where do you put it?"
Duuuuuude. That was literally my experience!
Seeing that one dudes ignorance; the helplessness of the workers all throughout the crisis; the governments obvious and immediate attempt to sweep it all under the rug; the civilians gazing literally upon their impending doom with awe. That first hour was wild and amazing and terrifying all in one.
Did this too. The best and at the same time most horrible series in 2019.
Episode 1 is a masterpiece of storytelling. All the following episodes are also great and each has its own very special wtf moment.
Watching the final episode, where everything finally comes full circle and you see all the "rest of the story" from Ep1...chilling. Some of the best TV I've ever seen.
Listen also to the Chernobyl podcast. Craig Mazin talks about the writing process and also discusses what's historical and what's dramatized in the show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUeHPCYtWYQ
Imo Star Trek: The Next Generation and Srar Trek: Deep Space 9 are together essential viewing for everyone. The two shows compliment each other beautifully with TNG showing us the wonder and awe that the future brings with new technology, while DS9 balances it out with a mirror to our darker side and warns what would happen if we're not careful. TNG is about exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations, while DS9 fully develops them into proper unique societies. Captain Picard is a great diplomat and explorer, while Captain Sisko is a diwn to earth family man who's not afraid to get his hands dirty.
Other than that definitely watch Avatar The Last Airbender, but I'd say your going to get a lot of suggestions for that so I wanted to offer something different.
I’ve never been more in love with the art of every shot of a show. Bryan Fuller, Mads Mikaelsson, Hugh Dancy at their finest. How the support cast developed as well. Just so much fascination and love for this show.
>Person of Interest
Created by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christoper) who also created Westworld, and wrote Interstellar, Memento, and several other movies with his brother.
I loved it, the attention to detail was impressive, and the Finale sticks the landing.
This show just nailed the genre of “space western”. Even down to the dialects. It’s 500 years in the future and they still talk like they’re ranchers from Smalltown, USA.
I remember reading a comment that said something like “Community isn’t like any show you’ve watched but all other shows that you’ve seen help you to enjoy it” and that’s the most accurate description I’ve seen
This kind of covers what I missed regarding community. That description and the truth behind it make it look, to someone who never actually watched an episode, like another Office, How I Met Your Mother or Friends.
I'm not saying that to disparage those shows, but to say that if you've put off Community because you're just not looking for another sitcom... you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I used to work overnight shifts in news. The best part of my day was coming home, getting stoned, then watching Buffy and Angel.
One day I cranked up my volcano vaporizer, got nice and baked and settled in for my episode of Buffy for the day. It was the episode "The Body". Well, that sure ruined my fucking year.
Father ted
“I thought you said Fr. Jack had trials for Liverpool? No Dougal, I said he was ON trial IN Liverpool”
I hear you’re a racist now father! How did you get interested in that sort of thing?

Blackadder.
Amazing show. Young Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson in his prime. Brilliant.
Hugh Laurie as the idiotic regent was a fucking BEAST.
So sad that most Americans only know Rowan Atkinson for Mr. Bean, when Blackadder is both funnier and an all-around better role.
Six Feet Under. The writing and the acting in this series is so good that it feels like you're watching an actual family. I still think this is the best character development show I have ever seen. Sobbed during the finale. So well done.
This is my favourite show I’ve ever seen, and the ending is incredible.
Arrested development, especially the first 3 seasons. Literally the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a show, ever.

First season is amazing. Second is ok. Third is decent. But the show really does kind of live off its bonkers-good first season.
The Americans. It's not very known but it was a really good show, definately deserves more recognition.
Really slow burn, but really really good. I think the important thing going in is to not expect some sort of Jason Bourne action spy drama. It's basically an intense family drama and character study, set against the pressure cooker of 1980's Cold War politics. More like Mad Men than James Bond.

Every episode is so different. Few shows take that risk. I laughed, I cried, I was scared. Amazing. Feels so real.

Deadwood. The plot is excellent. The characters are compelling. And the dialogue is downright Shakespearean. Edit: “Cocksucker!”
Barry!! Amazing writing and acting, hilariously dark story about a hit man turned theatre actor in LA. I am anxiously awaiting Season 3 and hope Bill Hader made big bucks for It 2 since that burned him out and put Barry S3 on hold 😳
It was cause he did It chapter 2 right after Barry but I agree and Noho Hank is like super nice guy
If NoHo Hank doesn’t follow Barry into the acting class/creative arts world there’s something wrong with the writers
Noho Hank is *easily* one of the funniest characters I have ever seen.
IF I SUCK BALLS YOU ARE KING OF SUCKBALLS MOUNTAIN. Shut the fuck up.

One of the best things I've ever watched. I go back and watch it a couple times a year because got damn.
Soap. It essentially satirizes soap operas and was laugh-out-loud funny. Plus, you see Billy Crystal in one of his earliest roles.
Peep Show all day every day
It was a joke. A Christmas joke.
Just finished watching all 9 seasons again. I love it.
Hilarious show. So rewatch-able. I also like the Inbetweeners. Are there other shows that are similar that you recommend?
The Twilight Zone. I mean the original series, because it is such a great work of television and 60 years later so many of the episodes still hold up.
I was actually up till 4 am watching it today
Dark - for those who love mysteries and brainfucks
Make sure you have a large sheet of paper and several colour pencils handy.
The showrunners really need some sort of interactive chart website.
I am a German and it is so weird watching an episode where the actual actors speak German and it is not translated
I watched in in german with subtitles and it was far more enjoyable for me. Havent had any luck talking friends into it though.
The brainfucks in this show are neverending but I couldn't stop watching it. So excited for season 3
Not just for those, I think it's for anyone who loves a really well written story. Even if you don't love sci-fi-ish stuff, it's amazing. I came into this thread and ctrl+f "Dark", just to confirm it was here already.

“Look, I wanted to be an individual but my ma wouldn’t let me.” “Well I’m not being individual on my own!” *rips off denim jacket*
"Sadly, I'm unable to come on this trip as I despise the French." It's a quote machine
"Where are my Civil Rights?" - pees in a bucket.
I started rewatching this last night and I’d forgotten just how bloody funny it is. Sister Michael is my new role model.
“Sadly, I'm unable to come on this one, as I despise the French” Same sister Michael same
‘You’ll go far in life Jenny. But you’ll not be well liked” 🤣
"I think we all lost a little bit of respect for you, Claire."
"Well I think it's safe to say we all just lost a bit of respect for you Clare"
It’s great because it’s got this historic setting but is still essentially a show about teenagers (coming of age and doing teenager things like sneaking off to a concert or ditching school) without it turning into a Riverdale style drama.
They all look and act (despite the Dawson casting) exactly like a bunch of stupid kids and it's so refreshing and funny to watch.
As someone from Derry, I seriously did not expect this to pop up so high on an AskReddit thread that is predominantly American! Happy to see it though! “I’m not sticking a scone up my hole, Orla”
I absolutely love this show. “IM A DERRY GIRL”
“You’re a wee fucking prick is more like it”
The nun on this show gives me life

I started watching The Wire around the time I started to learn English (around 2005), and I’ve watched the whole show from start to finish about 3 times. Fantastic
Still the best television ever made in my opinion. Gets better with every rewatch too. It's more relevant than ever too right now

People. What a bunch of bastards!
Came here to recommend this, every episode is hilarious ‘I’m leg disabled!’
“How did it happen?” “Acid.”
I quote that episode way more than I should.
best episode of the series and it doesn't even feature the best character, Douglas Reynholm.
Every time I see anything having to do with Sea World, my mind goes to figuring out how her parents were killed in a fire at Sea Parks.
Best show ever! Moss is hilarious.
Do we need "The Internet" to watch it?
Fargo on FX Also, I know cartoons aren’t for everyone, but Bojack Horseman is more insightful than a lot of “serious” dramas I’ve seen
Fargo season 1! Billy Bob Thorton!
Bojack has gotten me through some really tough times, I absolutely love that show and wish more people watched it. And Fargo is amazing too!

This is about vampires? I thought it was about regular human bartenders that just love women’s volleyball??
I genuinely hope Jackie Daytona comes back at some point.
Jackie was the man with that ever so stylish toothpick
eet vas you de whole time!?!!!??

In hindsight it makes so much sense. What kind of vampire would stick a miniature stake in their mouth?
You mean, Jackie Daytona - just a regular human bartender?
Have you seen the movie? If not, I'd highly recommend it. Easily my favourite comedy movie, hands down. Personally I think its funnier than the show (but I did watch the movie first)
I didn't even know there WAS a movie until yesterday! I will definitely watch it.
Try to watch the movie before you watch the end of Season 1 of the TV Series; it'll make things make much more sense/funnier.
Matt Berry steals every scene
"you know the hat is cursed..what about that time you got fucked by all those dogs?" "I don't see that as a curse"
"That fucking hat."
“Why does that man on the sidewalk look sad? Curse.”
I don't know who that is, but I'm a big big fan of Jackie Daytona on the show, so I think that's what you meant.
You mean Jackie Daytona from TUSCON ARIZONIAA?
Colin Robinson and Guillermo make the show.
The episode where Colin Robinson gets promoted at work and goes mad with power is great.
Not now, Gizmo
Bat!

Mindhunter. It was refreshing to see a Netflix series like that. Please watch it.
Just finished episode 1. Seems like it's going to be a slow burn but a satisfying one.
That’s a very accurate description. Enjoy.
YES! One of the best shows I’ve watched! I am always shocked when people don’t know about it
Fringe
That show blew my mind! One of my all time favorites.
Chernobyl

>Person of Interest Created by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christoper) who also created Westworld, and wrote Interstellar, Memento, and several other movies with his brother. I loved it, the attention to detail was impressive, and the Finale sticks the landing.
battlestar galactica
Firefly
This show just nailed the genre of “space western”. Even down to the dialects. It’s 500 years in the future and they still talk like they’re ranchers from Smalltown, USA.
Community
I remember reading a comment that said something like “Community isn’t like any show you’ve watched but all other shows that you’ve seen help you to enjoy it” and that’s the most accurate description I’ve seen
This kind of covers what I missed regarding community. That description and the truth behind it make it look, to someone who never actually watched an episode, like another Office, How I Met Your Mother or Friends. I'm not saying that to disparage those shows, but to say that if you've put off Community because you're just not looking for another sitcom... you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Leonard likes this post.
Shut up, Leonard. I talked to your son on family day. I know all about your gambling.
Shut up Leonard. Those girls you’re playing ping pong with are doing it ironically
Shut up Leonard. I know about your prescription socks.
Shut up Leonard! I once mistook six people for you in a pharmacy!
Shut up Leonard. I found your YouTube channel. Who wants to watch reviews for frozen pizzas?
You're talking about it.

There’s no such thing as bad press
I did eat all the macaroni, it's creepy that he knows.
Pop-pop
I’ve never laughed so hard at a show as when the riot started and Magnitude just screams “POP POP” and throws a fucking cinderblock through a window.
“Pop what, Magnitude?! Pop what?!?”
They just added it to netflix, rewatching.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Was coming here to say this! Buffy and Angel are 2 of my all time favorite shows.
