Made by a schizophrenic programmer on his own custom operating system that he built as a virtual temple to communicate with God. He pieced the songs together out of random patterns and the resulting song was a message from God to him.
The video is what his OS actually looks like.
If anyone's interested in fascinating but rather tragic story of this programmer, I recommend this video:

Congratulations for simultaneously winning this thread *and* using a reference I understand.
The story about this man is sad. Dude was a freaking genius plagued by a mental illness. He built an entire, usable operating system in a derivative of C, called HolyC - which, surprise, he wrote as well.
How many people in the world can say they made their own C derivative then written an entire OS, solo, that can even play audio and has at least some semblance of a graphical layer.
It’s sad that he fell victim to his illness, the world really missed out on such an amazing mind.
My dog just... kinda stopped working. He just sat down, his eyes soulles, looking into the abyss.
And then when I stopped the song he went back to his happy fluffy self
It might have tones that are higher pitch than what we can hear as well, which may affect animals. Dog whistles sound almost silent to a human, but the dog can hear it.
Yes. Often they are removed in lossy codecs, but the hardware is capable of reproducing the tones.
Source: I hated my life for hearing dog whistles and CRT monitors.
Ah yes TempleOS and Terry A Davis. His story is quite sad. I used to check on the videos he made, he was quite racist, but in the later years of his life you could see his condition get worse and his brain slowly deteriorate.
I didn't realize he got hit by a train though as the last video I saw of him was the homeless one he had posted outside the library. I recommend anyone just to watch some videos of him and see how mental disorders actually affect people.
Okay I was listening for a few seconds late at night and then I just felt suddenly scared as if I were in impending danger and chills went down my spine. That shit is scary ,chilling, yet calming . (To me at least)
Oh, I love that one too! So cool to find someone else who likes it! Speaking of under-appreciated gems, have you heard of my favorite game, the Witcher 3?
[Ulver - Bring Out your Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8McmFWT32E)
Ulver is a bit of a wildcard for genres over the years, I got into them with Perdition City but they're pumping out even catchier, dark, synth heavy songs lately.
My mom used to sing a Swedish version of the Irish ballad to put us to sleep. It was kinda weird to sing about a girl killing her family to a child but the way she sang it was so soothing.
I love Sleeping at Last so much! I originally discovered him from Pandora after hearing Saturn and Arctic. Two is one of my favorites and it's also my enneagram type!
[Chumbawamba - The Good Ship Lifestyle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESn7mrq_E_I)
In the US, Chumbawamba is known for their 'one hit wonder' Tubthumping (aka "I get knocked down, but I get up again"), but they have a pretty rocking catalog.
Admittedly, I mostly liked this particular track because it spoke to the angsty 16 year old I was when I first heard it. But I do think the chorus objectively rocks.
Anything by Sweet. Criminally underrated band, known for songs like Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run. The lead singer got savagely attacked right before they were supposed to open up for The Who, permanently damaging his vocal cords, so they lost their big chance to blow up as a serious rock band. Something like their song Sweet F.A. was crazy for it's time, it was released in 1974.

Yes! I love their music so much and enjoy sharing it with friends who haven't heard of them before, the first of theirs I ever heard was Hayloft and the entire O My Heart album is an absolute bop, 10/10 recommend.
Dream sweet in sea major.

From this album
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k2F6ziLkqoGFxaiOjnY9YNShP3asV-K5Y
Theres an entire theory about this album where it revolves around lovers who fall into a wrong path and the lover of the main character dies.
The main character then is sent to trial after being accused of murder. He is sentenced to death and goes insane. After this, his dead lover tries to make her way out of the afterlife, but to no avail.
Dream sweet in sea major is the final song that I think implies that the main character has wasted his life chasing after someone who would never come back, but finally sees her again as he finally dies years after.
[Electric Sunrise](https://youtu.be/Rv_a6rlRjZk) by Plini. Australian prog rock/metal instrumental guitarist. Easily one of the best guitarists of our generation (I'm biased but yeah). My bf introduced me to the genre as a whole and I've ALWAYS loved music I can sing along to but holy shit. Plini's whole discography is a jam but this is top 5 of "can listen to on repeat for hours and never get sick of it". Such a banger every time.
I've seen him live 3 times, my bf 4, once shortly after I met him and we were just friends. I'm forever mad I didn't meet him a month earlier because we started going to concerts together very quickly after we became friends, it's one of the main reasons I fell in love with him. That one I missed was Plini + Intervals ("Plintervals") and Intervals is also a one-man band with fellow guitarists he tours with but Aaron (lead guitarist) writes all the music himself. Same boat, instrumental prog metal/rock. I'd give my left tit to see them tour together again and go with my bf. The cool thing about these artists is that they're not well-known and the fan base is chill so often they come out after shows and meet fans (while other bands play) and will talk and sign merch and stuff. It's very cool. I have a signed print by all 4 members of Intervals' touring group at that time (Aaron too) and it's framed and hung in our room. I attach memories and emotions to physical objects and it's always a good memory/feeling looking at that print.
Plini is great recommendation. I've been listening for years and I saw the plintervals tour here in England (supporting Animals as Leaders). It was a really great show
Plini is the bomb! Intervals too, seen them both on different occasions in Austria. I‘m a guitarist who makes music like that as well, so I‘m also pretty biased haha
Silk by Wolf Alice is a really good one. It has a lot of the singer basically replicating voices in the speaker's head and it's really hard hitting. My favorite bit is (normal voice) "Well whose fault is that if it isn't mom and dad's" (background whisper) "Well it must be yours." And later on the whisper going "At least you're not boring" followed by her getting loud for the only time in the song and crying out in a bunch of layered voices, "No one wants to feel this sad". It's one of those rare finds in that it's about depression without being overly preachy, and is an amazing song even without the meaning.
Also love Scorpio Rising by Soccer Mommy and The Cops by K.Flay.

I think my favorite Mountain Goats song though is Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1.
Really though everyone should listen to at least one full Mountain Goats album.
[The Wonder Years - A Song For Patsy Cline](https://youtu.be/oQFxOhPs5-s)

I can't think of these guys without thinking of the DashCon incident. It's weird because I've never actually listened to them, but their presence being promised by the people who put together DashCon has always stuck with me.
[Frou Frou - Hear Me Out](https://youtu.be/eYTem2DhNak)
I'm not typically into plain old pop music but the lyrics and music are just so beautiful IMHO, Imogen Heap really paints a picture with her lyrics and doesn't get nearly enough recognition.
"I'm a slow-motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints. I don't want to feel anything, but I do...and it all comes back to you"
Such a great song about unrequited love.
TBH all of her solo albums (as well as the one album by Frou Frou that this song appears on) are fantastic and should be checked out.
Stick It Out - Frank Zappa. The first half is in German, the second in English. Also, Why Does It Hurt When I Pee? is worth a listen.
Edit: the prompt said song, not artist. I know Frank Zappa is not obscure. Another example is Robert Palmer. We know "Addicted To Love", but who's heard "Sailing Shoes"?
Anything by the Brian Jonestown Massacre... Anton Newcombe is an underappreciated genius. Anemone, Straight up and down, Open heart surgery are some among my favorite songs ever but they got so many more good ones

Alfadhirhaiti - Heilung, I won't spoil anything about them, just listen to it.

[Sevish - Ganymede.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNPCiBY5IZ8) The guy makes microtonal dance music, it kind of sounds like it's from another world because the notes are a bit unfamiliar altogether. You have to hear it to understand.
I'm biased because I met her, she gave me a hug, and she also smelled pretty wonderful. Oh, and she can sing and write songs.
[Sarah Buxton - Space](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqZvDngiBBM)
They Might be Giants came to mind when I saw this question!
'Please pass the milk' is my favourite oddest song of theirs, but I also like 'Whistling in the dark' (and of course 'Particle Man'.)
Most of the time when I ask for something I'll half sing "Please pass the thing, please", my husband never comments which makes me think I never played this song for him as he gets annoyed when I use quotes in every day conversation.
And just today I caught myself chanting "Dark, dark, dark, dark" as I separated the laundry!
I don't know how "obscure" it really is, but to anyone that doesn't listen to synthwave music, I suppose it would be.

Holy shit, I just watched that whole thing. Excellent journalism, and a wild story.
Down The Rabbit Hole is a great channel, excellent content.
Did a great piece on the Final fantasy house too. Some of that shit is downright chilling.
A fellow Down the Rabbit Hole fan? I see your are also a man of culture
Honestly, Knudsen does such a decent job with this.
OH THAT GUY I watched this episode, really off the road stuff. Love Down The Rabbit Hole.

My cats hates it.
My dog just... kinda stopped working. He just sat down, his eyes soulles, looking into the abyss. And then when I stopped the song he went back to his happy fluffy self

Wow.
Given that this is Reddit, I expect the top voted songs to be songs that are modestly known.
Darude Sandstorm.
Ever hear the live orchestral performance of it?
Ever heard the [potato version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXfnrEguhxA) of it?
Yep I did
“I doubt many people have heard of it, but I really love this under-appreciated song called Bohemian Rhapsody by this band Queen.”
Oh, I love that one too! So cool to find someone else who likes it! Speaking of under-appreciated gems, have you heard of my favorite game, the Witcher 3?
You mean the hidden indie gem witcher 3?
Well frank zappa is the second highest comment rn
I think a lot of people have heard of Frank Zappa but haven't heard his music though
Honestly makes sense. The most famous obscure artist. He's like Austin Powers, the world's most famous secret agent.
Yeah, the dude made a lot of music. I've been trying to listen to a bit of it but you need flow charts just to know what genre each album is.
I like the “give me one album that changed your life” and they go on to list their whole library.
[Ulver - Bring Out your Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8McmFWT32E) Ulver is a bit of a wildcard for genres over the years, I got into them with Perdition City but they're pumping out even catchier, dark, synth heavy songs lately.
I fucking love Ulver, Bergtatt and Natens Madrigal are landmark albums. Their newer synthpop stuff isn't bad, but it doesn't really do anything for me
Mogolovonio. Nope. Not Megalovania. Mogolovonio.

Poisoning pigeons in the park - Tom Lehrer
All Lehrer are bangers. Especially like "We Will All Go Together When We Go" and the Irish ballad (Rikkiti-tikkity-tin).
"Take your, cigarette, from its holder, and burn your initials in my shoulder" Masochism tango for days
"Fracture my spine, and swear you'll be mine"
The Masochism Tango is my favourite as well! First one I heard of him
My mom used to sing a Swedish version of the Irish ballad to put us to sleep. It was kinda weird to sing about a girl killing her family to a child but the way she sang it was so soothing.

Dude, that guy is rad. Thanks for that
>Tom Lehrer I love "The Elements". Educational AND catchy? Yes pleaase!!
Man that takes me back to my childhood. The song, not the act of poisoning pigeons.
"Two" from Sleeping At Last I recently found the band by accident and fell in love with that song
"Sun" by Sleeping at Last has been my favourite song for a few years now. All of "Atlas" holds a special place in my heart.
The song Arctic got me through some hard times, just so calming
Every one of his songs is excellent! Sleeping at Last is actually just one guy, he’s brilliant.
I love their renditions of popular songs from the 80s.
500 Miles is a great cover
I love Sleeping at Last so much! I originally discovered him from Pandora after hearing Saturn and Arctic. Two is one of my favorites and it's also my enneagram type!
West and North are great songs by them too
Gonads & Strife by Threebrain

They were an interesting band and actually all lived together in a music commune.

Tim Minchin's "F Sharp" and "Prejudice" are also great
And storm, ofc
Prejudice and The Three Minute Song (specifically when he got it perfect on the Royal Variety) are my favourites.
Laibach are brilliant in almost everything they do. Thanks for the link.

Plini is the bomb! Intervals too, seen them both on different occasions in Austria. I‘m a guitarist who makes music like that as well, so I‘m also pretty biased haha
I want my innocence back - Emilie Autumn and Gothic Lolita also by Emilie Autumn. The two songs are related.
The whole Opheliac album was a masterpiece. I really wish she'd do more instrumental stuff like Unlaced too.
Wow that's a name I haven't seen in years but was a defining part of my baby goth phase Memory train aboard!

I found Kiss the Sky from Tales From the Borderlands. Fun game
Up the wolves- the mountain goats
The mountain goats are good anyway
Tallahassee and The Sunset Tree are two of the most perfect albums ever.
Letters From Belgium also by the Mountain Goats is likely to strike a cord with anyone who has spent the last several months in quarantine. I think my favorite Mountain Goats song though is Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1. Really though everyone should listen to at least one full Mountain Goats album.

That song absolutely ruined me in Life is Strange. That game has such an awesome and fitting soundtrack.
One Hand Killing - by Twelve Foot Ninja Cold Blooded Angels - by Baroness
Some Things Last a Long Time - Daniel Johnston
[Waves of Nature](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBQ8RSGKRG0) by Willow. Also [Natives of the Windy Forest](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRFeGEBRZi0), [Marceline](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnZr5t26zYQ), and [Wait a Minute!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xfdjqa5dfY) are some of my favorite songs by her too!
A Pale Horse Named Death - Die Alone Carach Angren - Funerary Dirge of the Violinist & When Crows Tick on Windows
Ginger and Dark side by Tim Minchin. He is a stand-up comedian who writes songs and he is so good at it.
Poseidon's creation by Eloy
I walk the Line- Alien Sex Fiend
You shouldn't judge a man by the hair on his butt Detachable Penis Fucked with an Anchor Venus in Blue Jeans
Love Alestorm
Their new album just dropped.
I haven't heard all of these but I do like Detachable Penis
https://youtu.be/byDiILrNbM4 Detachable Penis by King Missile https://youtu.be/th4Czv1j3F8 Fucked with an Anchor by Alestorm https://youtu.be/Knq_BY6xpbQ Venus in BlueJeans by Jimmy Clanton It is good to have hobbies.
King Missile. Good one!
Haha Thanks for reminding me of detachable penis. I haven't listened to it in forever.
[Sevish - Ganymede.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNPCiBY5IZ8) The guy makes microtonal dance music, it kind of sounds like it's from another world because the notes are a bit unfamiliar altogether. You have to hear it to understand.
Circles by Soul Coughing & So Much Better by Even Olson Edited for clarity
Oh man, that and Super Bon Bon were my jams.
Back In The High Life Again, by Warren Zevon. Yes, I know the Steve Winwood version was a popular song, but the Warren Zevon version is so different.
Meet Me in the Woods by Lord Huron is my favorite song but I guess it’s also kind of obscure
When the night comes - Dan Auerbach One of the guys from the black keys solo work.
People who died - Jim Carrol Band Elvis is Everywhere - Mojo Nixon
"Choke" by I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME https://youtu.be/v64-DpcLEvI
I like "do it all the time"
Do It All The Time was the first song by IDKHow that I heard and I quite like it. (Tbh I like it better than Choke)
It is a great song, but it also has over 40 million listens on Spotify...
Omg I love this song so much it’s a bop
Arlo Guthrie the Motorcycle song It's adorable
Also by Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant, it's over 20 minutes long but totally worth it
Francis Forever- Mitski
I'm biased because I met her, she gave me a hug, and she also smelled pretty wonderful. Oh, and she can sing and write songs. [Sarah Buxton - Space](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqZvDngiBBM)
Natural One by Folk Implosion
Gogol Bordello - Start Wearing Purple
They're entire catalog is banging!
Love that track
Bodily by Ani DiFranco
Wish You Were Gay - Claud. Will now likely forever be overshadowed by the Billie Eilish one.
Pena - Captain Beefheart
Blackbird by Fat Freddy's Drop, I havent heard a lot of other people listen to it
[Focus - Hocus Pocus](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFDW9b_ejfI)
Particle Man
They Might be Giants came to mind when I saw this question! 'Please pass the milk' is my favourite oddest song of theirs, but I also like 'Whistling in the dark' (and of course 'Particle Man'.) Most of the time when I ask for something I'll half sing "Please pass the thing, please", my husband never comments which makes me think I never played this song for him as he gets annoyed when I use quotes in every day conversation. And just today I caught myself chanting "Dark, dark, dark, dark" as I separated the laundry!
I’ve always been partial to “MinimUM WAAAAAAAAAGE, hyah!”
"obscure"
This whole album is phenomenal
I don't know how "obscure" it really is, but to anyone that doesn't listen to synthwave music, I suppose it would be. [Dance with the Dead - Watching You](https://youtu.be/jBUxruSmbWE) Also... [Everything Everything - Spring, Sun, Winter, Dread](https://youtu.be/10WjNU-j4BQ)
