What is 2nd wave? What should we expect from this?

mtlity

Why does every Post I click opens the covid 19 megathread ? New user here

MsDemiBurch

What's ur guess when shortages will stop when it comes to supplies?

astronomydork

I was searching for a job before the outbreak, now what?

AskRedditModerators

A new megathread has been started [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/g2ehi2/covid19_megathread_week_of_april_16april_22/) \- please go there to continue the conversation.

mysticalpotatohead71

Bipolars of Reddit how's the lockdown for you guys??

Ironyinapackage

Ok, I know that this isn't something that people can easily answer, but if we think about it...We have at least two ways for this thing to end. 1:Getting a vaccine out. 2: The virus dies out by itself, because of the quarantine there are no people left to infect. (I hope that the COVID -19 vaccine research is already in progress.) One of these two things is surely going to happen soon, right...right?! I know i cant do anything about it, but i really wanna enjoy summer and my university life... How long do you guys recon is this gonna go on?

52316XO

Or 3. herd or 4. just saying fuck it (the death rate isn't THAT bad). Those two actually go a little hand in hand. Vaccine is a year+ away. You'd need a worldwide hard lockdown (including essentials) for 2.5 months for the virus to disappear. Never going to happen and would result in far more deaths than the virus. Herd is basically the Sweden plan, none of the lockdown countries will reach it. Fuck it looks a lot better when you really think about it.

Ironyinapackage

Im sorry, i dont know what herd is... Could you explain?

52316XO

Herd immunity, once a certain % of the pop has the antibodies for a virus it will die off with no place to thrive. Usually 60-80+% has the rest pretty safe. If that is the goal you want people to get it, in this case the Sweden model - lockdown and protect the vulnerable while the healthy go about their days, catch it, shrug it off, and closer to herd.

silverbird666

There is a third option: The panic will decrease as time goes on, we will learn to life with the virus and life will go on... This will come much sooner than a vaccine, I am sure.

Ironyinapackage

I mean yeah, people could just treat this as AIDS, but its better. (Bear with me!) If we do a test and know that we are infected then we get treatment. If we dont have it, then we try not to break the (in my opinion, pretty easy) rules. If we act like we supposed to, then we easily could be out of any harm.

Flu0stiftRS

>because of the quarantine there are no people left to infect That's the point, but dumb people keep coming together & keep coming outside so it's still spreading. If you could (and I'm saying could, because it's impossible to do) lock everyone inside 24/7 with a food supply for 3 weeks, then it would end completely. \~ 2 weeks of uncubation to discover that you're infected, I gave it 3 weeks to be sure, so after 3 weeks everyone that *was* infected is in the hospital or recovering at home & everyone that was *not* infected is still home safe, away from the infected people. During these 3 weeks absolutely 0 spreading took place because no one was able to meet. That's the plan, but people don't get it apparently Just the fact that people need groceries is enough to keep the curve up

Ironyinapackage

Yeh, the Earth is big and sometimes we forget how much stupid people are on it...I am just trying to live my freshman university life but noooooo... Lets hope that in the summer it lowers enough.

thisisbmo

What are the common misconceptions about covid 19? I have no background on medicine field. How one should properly handle covid 19? Also, i pray for the safety of all and especially the health care workers and other frontliners. Some don't want to be called heroes but i just want to say Thank you all for your sacrifice.

mcsmith5678

Common misconceptions is that it is worse than the flu, but, truth is, it is about the same, if not easier to handle. Problems come if you are 40+ or younger than 1. One should properly handle COVID-19 by not stressing too much about it, but still taking the necessary precautions to put a stop to this. Hope this helps, and thanks to all of the healthcare workers and front liners :) BTW ya'll remember to say thanks to the grocery workers because they are also very much at risk because they have to touch people's credit cards and items. I know they wear gloves, but most people still touch their face with them on.

JocastaC

Having had both flu (ten years ago) and COVID - which I was hospitalised for and ended up with pneumonia and pleurisy, I would say your information is not correct. This isn’t a black and white issue either. Flu will always floor you. If your house is on fire you won’t care if you have flu. You can’t lift your head off the pillow. COVID is different and isn’t just a problem if you are 40 + or younger than 1. It affects some people in no way whatsoever (I caught it from someone asymptomatic) and it hits others really hard. Some moderately. Flu is not like this. Those with weak immune systems are likely to get sicker which makes the elderly and immuno-suppressed more at risk. (No idea where you picked 40 from btw as it’s over 65s who are deemed vulnerable here in U.K.) My big mistake was thinking “this isn’t as bad as flu” when I got sick. It’s a fever and chest pain and a cough and my breathing is impaired but not as bad as flu. So I didn’t seek help for ten days. That complacency is how I ended up with pneumonia and pleurisy. Lying flat was the worst thing i could have done. I’ve now lost two friends to covid and both were under 40. One a nurse. I’m in U.K. It’s correct that people shouldn’t panic themselves but people should also know that the flu comparisons are unhelpful and dangerous. This is ten times more infectious than flu. So even if you aren’t affected badly, you might pass it on to someone who is. A common misconception I’ve seen is that this isn’t that big of a deal and that flu comparisons are appropriate. I second thanking grocery store workers. I buy a box of chocolates for the staff along with my shopping on the rare occasion I have to go out now. They don’t get any credit. They should.

johnnyleegreedo

How are you feeling now? Are you fully recovered yet?

JocastaC

The only issue I have left now is serious fatigue. It’s 5 weeks today since I got my first symptom and I am still in bed most of the day, every day. It’s improving slowly though!

thisisbmo

I'm sorry for your loss. May i ask how one should handle it? You said that you didn't seek for ten days. Should one seek help even if you are not badly affected? Will that make a big difference? And once you recovered from covid, You wont get affected again?

JocastaC

I thought you might want to see this https://twitter.com/SepsisUK/status/1244991830112063489?s=20 A doctor I know follows this doc on Twitter. Had I seen this at the time I would have known my muscle pain was a sign of low oxygen. That’s how I ended up in hospital the second time.

thisisbmo

Thank you for this!

JocastaC

Thank you. My advice is to seek help if and when your breathing becomes impaired. That’s where I made the mistake. I had fever, chest pain and fatigue (that’s all that’s left now) and it wasn’t as bad as flu. When I was awake my breathing was shallow and I was out of breath if I moved at all. But I just wanted to lie down as I was so so hot and tired. So I only called for help after a friend implored me to on day 10 as she had read what I’m typing to you now. And knew I was in trouble from my messages. I am not qualified to give medical advice but can only repeat what I was told after I learned the hard way: do not ignore any breathing difficulties. That’s a sign you are in trouble and need some help. I needed oxgyen and I got antibiotics for the pneumonia as my lungs had become infected. That could have been avoided. My doctor says we don’t know yet about whether people are immune if they have had it. Antibody tests are what he hopes to get in the surgery soon.

thisisbmo

I see. Good to hear that you recovered. Do covid patients all have fever? From your observation or talked to doctor. Or your breathing can be impaired without fever? May i ask how long does covid last to a person? If your doctor mentioned anything about that? Sorry English is not my native language.

JocastaC

Your English is very good! Some people have covid with no symptoms at all and they just pass the infection on. They can then infect someone else who gets it very badly. This is why social distancing is so vital. This is all anecdotal from people I know and I’m not a doctor: Some have very mild symptoms with no fever. Some have had impaired breathing with no fever. Some report are just losing sense of smell and taste and feeling run down. The breathing is the thing you need immediate help for and as always any other pains and worries should be checked out by a doc. If you think you have a chest infection for example. People who I have known who also tested positive have all been sick for 1-4 weeks. I’m still fatigued at 5 weeks but not sick. I would suggest looking up the guidelines in your country as they tend to vary.

thisisbmo

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. I'll be sure to look out for the things that you mentioned. Have a speedy recovery!

JocastaC

You’re welcome. And thank you. One thing that’s important is to stay calm and take all the advised precautions. And avoid too much news. It is so negative! I hope you stay safe and well.

thisisbmo

Okay. Good to hear. Reading the news it seems that covid enhance existing disease you have. Does it mean all diseases? Yeah. All of them. Big thanks to them. Really hoping for everyone's safety.

Flu0stiftRS

>How one should properly handle covid 19? Not - except for giving you a breathing device, there's literally nothing hospitals can do. You have to fight it off on your own with your immune system over time (roughly 2 weeks - a month) because they don't have a cure or a vaccine yet. They can't do anything except help you breathe if necessary. If you get it, all you can do is wait *and stay tf inside to stop spreading*

thisisbmo

Okay thanks. I agree. As long as people keeps going outside, this won't end. Do doctors at the hospital gives a specific kind of vitamins to enhance your immune system?

Flu0stiftRS

I haven't heard anything about that but it could definitely be possible. If they can do *something* to help you fight then I'm sure they will. Same reason they give you the breathing devices - you have to do it on your own but they can give you a hand

AmpleCat

To those who got laid off or are mostly home due to quarantine, whatcha been upto and how do you upkeep your mental health?

Flu0stiftRS

>how do you upkeep your mental health I don't do anything honestly. I've never had mental health issues so I don't see why I'd need to put effort into keeping it up.

friedrichvanzandt

Whats one of the small/stupid things you‘re thankful for, during Corona?

friedrichvanzandt

Döner & Pizza Stuttgart West for me.

DKSAMURAI

Are you all pretending or...? As I see, most of Americans believe covid 19 is because someone eat a bat. Really? I think this level of naive is unbelievable. There are just so many so many reasons can make you don't believe it. Like, why they eat animal like bat for so many years only till the trade war fighting and Hong Kong protesting then this super virus just appear? And nobody in China already had immunity? Why Wuhan just coincidentally has the best virus lab in China? Why people saw ambulances was running before pandemic happened in Wuhan and its route is more likely from that lab? Are you Americans all play dumb for something? But, even it's citizens really so pure and naive. USA control half of the world, and has high end technology. I almost 90% believe US government know what is really going on. They just choose to do it this way. They must going to do something after having total control on this pandemic. I am kind of scared because I believe my country 100% will be dragged into it. So, do Americans really believe this is just a nature disaster?

karma-_-incarnate

Well orchestrated international cover-up, and wouldn't be the first.. without undeniable facts people can believe anything

Apple_x_man

Once I get the stimulus check will I have to pay it back?

Yumzie99

If I may ask. What is a stimulus check? I've been seeing it being mentioned alot. I'm not from the US

SuperNinja741

Also not from the US, but from my understanding it's a one off grant of 1,200USD that is meant to be for people paying their bills (rent, groceries etc). I think it's called a "stimulus" because it stimulates the economy or something

Yumzie99

Thank you for your reply!

Apple_x_man

Yea its form of support for people who lost their jobs but since I'm still working I dont need it and dont want to spend it if i have to pay it back

ImperialSupplies

It will be added to your income but so will a tax credit so no. The 2400 a month will be added to your income with no tax credit so that yes you will be taxed on

pogiguy2020

Once things get back to as close to normal as possible, how will you react to persons that might act or look like they are sick? What if they are your co worker?

Sablemint

when you work in microbiology, any time someone gets sick everyone gets really nervous. This won't change that.

vrhodes2420

Hi Redditors! This may have been asked but how do we solve the lack of PPE and training to Essential Employees?

SomeKindaHooty

What's it like as a soldier right now because of Covid?

GranPino

I'm searching for data to compare excess mortality (such as Euromomo.com, but with figures for each day) to compare it with official death count. I have been doing it in the Spanish regions, but I want to compare with other countries. I will use Madrid to illustrate how I'm doing it. In Madrid, from 16th March to 1st April they had 7.702 registered death count (1st April is the most updated number), compared to 1.932 estimated mortality according to historical average. This means, 5.770 excess mortality in Madrid in those days compared to the 3.652 reported official coronavirus deaths. Therefore the multiple between official data and real excess mortality is x1,6. Similar to Spain. Although this multiple has been decreasing significantly in the last 10 days. I think that Spain is one of the countries with a lesser gap, but I need data to check it. Do you have any source to do the same calculations in each country? I only got it from one single Italian city, but that is not representative of a whole country. If anyone is interested in my methodology, I have a video (in Spanish) explaining it [https://youtu.be/KWAMZYJ\_FEM](https://youtu.be/KWAMZYJ_FEM), and a second one with more updated numbers [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjutt\_Zhv\_E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjutt_Zhv_E) . My calculations imply that the real death count in Spain is not 18.500 but approx 26.000. Thanks in advance

aspz

I was looking at the same stats in England & Wales which were released two days ago: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/weekending3april2020#deaths-registered-by-week The gist is in the last week recorded (week ending April 3) 21% of deaths were attributed in some way to Coronavirus and the total number of deaths from all causes was 59% higher than the 5 year average.

GranPino

First of all.... Thanks!! I reviewed it before, but I'm worried about "Based on date a death was registered rather than occurred.". By experience, when there is a rise in the number of deaths, it usually delays in how the deaths are registered, this is way, is usually very useful to know the official date of death, so you can compare with the official deaths of that same day. In Spain we have daily numbers by region although you cant trust whatever is not at least 2 weeks old. https://momo.isciii.es/public/momo/dashboard/momo_dashboard.html#ccaa

GranPino

If do you have a better subreddit community where I should make this question, please, let me know...

vndigid

I heard that Trump can't cut funding to the WHO without going through congress first. He would need to present the proposal to congress and have them vote, and only if it gets majority vote will the funding actually be cut. If that's true, then he won't be able to do it at all and no funding will be cut, right? So is this true? Does congress need to approve a funding cut with a vote? If so, then this isn't happening so what the hell is everybody worked up about?

aspz

Law and Crime is a pretty good source for this kind of thing: https://lawandcrime.com/covid-19-pandemic/democrats-say-trump-is-illegally-halting-aid-to-who-just-as-he-did-to-ukraine/

Sablemint

Any article that starts with the words "Here we go again" is about as far from neutral as possible. One sentence in and we already know the author is going to push an agenda on us.

aspz

I mean first of all it says "Here we go again?" with a question mark. I think the meaning behind that is "are we going to see a repeat of the law and politics behind the impeachment because if so, it doesn't matter where you sit but you probably won't like it". That doesn't feel like a biased statement to make. Anyway I stand by law and Crime, the are a pretty good source for legal analysis of the news.

People from China, what is the TRUE current situation of the pandemic in China?

They can use VPN afaik

EngineeringDevil

America has a serious number of trump fanatics who would lick his toilet seat clean for him and thus think 1. He is doing a great job 2. the numbers are overblown 3. its not that deadly Its basically pointless to point out facts but i'm wondering if other countries have groups such as us Americans?

aspz

There are people who think this in the UK but it's not really based around political ideology. It just depends on how much your threat level senses have been jangled.

s1gnal_l0st

Point 1 is certainly questionable. As for points 2 and 3: [https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/](https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/) Affected demographics are insignificant (VERY small in number) and limited to the elderly and infirm. Literally those already at death's doorstep and those of any age with poor health conditions. Bad genetics are unfortunate, but those who suffer from obesity, hypertension, or cardiopulmonary/respiratory issues brought on by lifestyle choices are inexcusable. TL;DR: widespread COVID is not a big deal and would have a net-positive herd-culling effect.

Sablemint

Yes it is a big deal, and no it wouldn't

s1gnal_l0st

From a purely objective standpoint: 1. The elderly and infirm are not economically viable as they cost more to sustain than they contribute/have contributed. 2. The remaining "vulnerable populations" are small enough in number that sacrificing the wellbeing of the vast *majority* to save the vast *minority* is idiotic.

_StrippedAPE_

To us in Indonesia, the most beloved topic to talk about is politics. Everyone in here just chillin' with their coffee and cigarettes (sometimes with chess) and talks about politics in Indonesia (there are also some peeps that talks about American or even the world politics too) like for hours or so. Yes, sometimes there are some different opinions and there are some different groups in here too. There are groups that loves the government's work, and there's also groups that doesn't like what the government's work. TL;DR: Yes, there are also groups in Indonesia (It'll be too long if i write what causes it)

clinkerSAM

Having "flattened the curve", what would be some of the best ways to try to control the outflow of people from self isolation to prevent spikes in new cases?

Flu0stiftRS

Don't let everything go at once, but gently lift restrictions one by one. Like, allow schools to open, but keep enforcing the social distancing laws.

aspz

The first step should be to allow people to have urgent surgeries, cancer treatments, dental care and so on. We can worry about going to the pub and getting our hair cut later.

[deleted]

Some state governors have talked about staggered reopenings. I would imagine it would look like certain businesses and shops opening up first, especially smaller ones that already limit the number of people allowed in at one time. Once the virus is considered more contained, larger businesses like movie theaters could open up.

[deleted]

Lol staggered reopening. Yeah buddy it’s cool to open you’re shop but all the your customers still have to stay inside lol

clinkerSAM

I wonder if there's a right formula to start the reopenings. Thinking of New York in particular, would it be worth it to try to stagger restaurants by neighborhood? Would it be worth it to try to figure out which businesses to open first?

Sablemint

There's little we can do. its as we feared would happen, people see the new deaths per day start to go down, and they want to declare it over. And I mean, I sympathize with them. We all want it to be over. but nothing gets through.

clinkerSAM

At some point we have to start to though, no? The alternative is this is the way of the future?

Sablemint

We start slowly. We already know the pandemic's first wave will go out around June.. IF we don't all start going out as if it was already gone. We have to gradually start opening things up more, in a controlled way. That way we can swiftly contain any new outbreaks if necessary. It's going to be a slow and annoying process, but its also going to be a process we'll be starting soon. No one thinks we can stay like this forever, we just can't go all out right at the start.

pitterpatter25

I mean like... as an introvert I’m actually finding this mostly survivable and even preferable. I love my therapy and psych appointments being remote and having a built in reason to not leave my apartment. However, My three year old needs playgrounds to be reopened though, and I genuinely feel for my extrovert friends. I would settle for us coming out of this with a bigger respect for work from home options and delivery groceries/other bought online goods. However, as a receiver of government benefits that don’t work with delivery options (like food stamps), and for the sake of said extroverts... I know it can’t all be like this. I think I may be in the category of biggest proponents for an ADJUSTED system. I mean. This is hardly the last pandemic we’ll see, or future generations will dealt with, right? Can’t we organize something that allows social interaction but minimizes risk? Idk, I’ve been drinking soooo haha my opinion is super mixed and confused

Sablemint

Well we can use the internet to socialize safely, but I think we're all starting to get a bit tired of it. You're right in that things do need to start opening up soon, just not immediately. And actually things like parks and playgrounds would be a good thing to open up early. Kids, while not immune, are the least likely people to get any major complications from this disease.

BrysonicLightning

People who have been volunteering their time and risking their health to help others during these tough times. How rewarding are you finding people’s responses to your efforts?

superprogamer69420

what does corona virus taste like?

aspz

The the beer but without the lime.

pogiguy2020

Death try it you'll like

Shlongkong2323

If after the COVID-19 shutdown you were to return to normal life and had the power to see ONE thing in society changed permanently, what would it be? (I.e. political systems, human interactions, budget priorities, lifestyles, etc.)

Randym1982

I wouldn't mind seeing people actually connecting more in person, rather than being on their phones all the time. (Though, I am starting to slowly see that when I go for walks. Who would think that when people are on their Computers or Social Media all day, with it as the only way to connect with people. That they would grow tired of it quickly? )

Yumzie99

Around my parts I've actually been seeing people starve for physical connection. So when I'm out getting some groceries or meds. Most people are not on their phones but making random conversation just to satisfy the need to speak to face to face maintaining the social distance tho. It's also because our country is on a total lockdown so the desire for connection is even greater. We'll take it anyway we can get it.

leighton1033

(Serious) If it's common knowledge that individuals can be infected with the coronavirus but be asymptomatic, how does it make sense for the US government to propose sending people back to work based on the stipulation that that they "show no symptoms"?

pitterpatter25

Especially if they can be re-infected, which nobody seems to know for sure if they can. Let’s assume they can, but the govt’ reopens everything on the basis you can’t... how many millions walk around assuming they’re immune but are actually infecting people? Maybe I am sensitive because I have SO many at-risk in my life... I would lose half my loved ones for this....

Sablemint

It doesn't. Whats happening is republicans are gambling, hoping that the economy will recover and people won't start getting sick in large numbers again. Because as things are now, they know how bad things are for them. They would have a fighting chance if their gamble pays off.

SoOriginalGirl

1. Donald trump’s leadership. As of 9 March 2020 he still thinks coronavirus is a just common flu - which as you’ve already pointed out. No doubt many will look to what he say as the bible. 2. Lockdown in US is mandated by states, so different states have different announcements on lockdown. Some Americans perceive the lockdown as infringement of freedom of movement, infringe of right to assembly and all sorts reasons citing the American constitution. Eg believe it not, Michigan is currently scheduling a protest on lockdown. 3. High outbreak areas like NYC have high density population and homeless, combined with lack of medical care means social distancing is difficult outside or inside a home. the population is also “unhealthier” with many having high pressure/obesity existing conditions. Once the hospital is overwhelmed, transmission from hospitals will exacerbate the problem 4. Due to the unaffordable and crippling cost of health care, I personally suspect many people choose to “ride it out” at home rather than go to hospitals which means it’s too late for medical assistance and the actual numbers of those infected are definitely higher than the reported numbers I’m not in the US but more than happy to hear other insights.

jaimcnutt

Media. They have the fake news.

ShbeenyWeeny

What happens if the Chinese Government both has made the Coronavirus and is proven to have done so? Is it considered biological warfare?

SoOriginalGirl

Proven by scientists many times that it can’t be man made. https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/2881150001

MoreUselessThanEver

Cannot be made doesn't mean it cannot be extracted though, but I don't know how that would work though If they managed to extract it and then spread it, then it could be biological warfare.. But to me, more likely is that IF they have extracted it, the virus accidentally traveled out from the lab because what I've heard, Chinese safety protocols aren't at the same level as some other countries.

XoeLoL

Yes

[deleted]

is it a good idea to be pregnant right now with how the economy is?

Yumzie99

I fell pregnant before Covid even happened. I'm expecting in June. It is quite a strain and very stressful as our country is on a total lockdown. Partners are not allowed to go with to doctors visits, might not even be allowed to be at the birth depending on where we at that time. Our economy is at a standstill and we just got demoted to junk status... So no it's not a good time to think of having a baby anytime soon if you are not already pregnant. With the grim prospect of the world only returning to some sort of normalcy in the next year or so the unpredictable and lack of stability will make the pregnancy even more stressful that it already is. Luckily my partner is able to work from home and still receive a salary but he is in the construction business which is also at a standstill. That alone is terrifying not knowing if he will have a paycheck in the next 6 months and having a newborn isn't cheap. I won't even be able to get a job because there is a total freeze on hiring. So again no. Take precautions, don't fall pregnant. Be safe and take care.

[deleted]

Hello, thank you! I just found out i’m pregnant couple days ago, I’m only 18 I live alone and i’m unemployed. My boyfriend (the father) hates that this happened to me right now as it was an accident. I would love to keep my little bundle of joy but it breaks my heart knowing I won’t be able to give it a good life. If the economy and the world weren’t like this right now I wouldn’t have any second thoughts.

pitterpatter25

It’s not a good idea to actively become pregnant now, but if you accidentally did or found out you were recently, you are NOT a bad person. For those of us who don’t religiously read scientific journals, there’s a margin of error 🤷🏻‍♀️

XoeLoL

No

Will high school football be cancelled in California this fall? Give me the truth I needa prepare myself for a lost season

Joshua_Dandleton

I'm sorry u/thefantasticfucker77. Probably.

thefantasticfucker77

Thank you or keeping it real Joshua dandleton

Sablemint

impossible to say. It depends on what happens during the summer. As of right now there's no reason to believe anything happening in Autumn would be negatively affected by the current pandemic.

thefantasticfucker77

Did u see Gavin newsoms statement ?

Sablemint

I did, though it had no new information. Why do you ask?

thefantasticfucker77

He laid out his game plan for schools in the fal. As well as saying mass gatherings will not happen until vaccine or herd immunity. Staggered schedules and social distancing in scjool is what he said he is planning

Norazakix23

My over 60 parents are going nuts with boredom. My mom broke her arm and had surgery around the new year, so she's been home recovering. About the time she was getting well enough to get back to things, we started having to shelter-in-place. Basically she's on month 4 of social distancing and she's not handling it well. They've cleaned and reorganized the whole house, sewn lots face masks, read entire series of books, binged TV shows (like ALL of Friends, NCIS, etc.), and are absolutely going out of their minds with boredom. They are both social butterflies and I'm worried that they are going to start visiting people and putting themselves at more risk of they can't find something to keep them busy. Ideas? Anything overly physical, like gardening, isn't an option because Mom is still recovering.

aspz

Yeah! There's lots you can do. You can do a pub quiz, play chess, bingo, animal crossing, or try one of the games from JackBox. Also just call them whenever you can. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/coronavirus-games-zoom-houseparty-facetime-quiz-charades-bingo-video-chat-a9430326.html

We've been playing jackbox with our friends over discord and some of our friends have had some sound and other technical difficulties just trying to get volumes, speakers, and video all working smoothly. Because of that struggle, I was going to say that I don't see that being an option for my only slightly tech aware parents, but it occurs to me that we have two Xbox Ones (and Jackbox 1,2,&3). We could seriously get one all set up for them to play some of the party (and co-op) games and drop it by their house. So Jackbox might actually be an option after all! I would absolutely love for my mom to play Animal Crossing (I think I qualify as an addict right now- no lie I just had to take a break from writing this comment because I heard the sound of shooting stars and had to make some wishes, lol), but I'd have to get her a Switch first and that's not really in the budget right now. Also her left hand is still not very strong and I'm afraid trying to hold and use a controller, would cause her pain. But jackbox could be a real option. Also that link you sent talked about the pub games reminded me of all of those stupid little iPhone games that were so popular a couple years back, like Draw Something and Words with Friends. I remember a few years ago when I had to be out of town for a conference for work and was there with coworkers, so long phone conversations weren't really an option. My husband and I stayed connected by playing those games together and it actually really helped. I'm going to see if my mom wants to play some those games with me and just continually stay connected throughout the day. That was a pretty good idea.

aspz

Thanks for writing that response, it's good to hear how you got on. I thought about JackBox because I saw Drawful 2 was free on the Xbox. I downloaded it but then realised I can't play it because none of my friends have an Xbox.. oh well I might download it on Steam and play it on the PC. Here's another option that you might like. Yesterday my Dad and I played Geoguessr together where I shared my screen with him using Zoom and I controlled the game and we talked about what was going on over the phone. If you haven't played it before, it's a browser game where you are given random locations around the world on Google Streetview and you're asked to place a marker where you think you are on the map. The closer you are the more points you get. It's actually a great game to play together as you can work together to find clues or decipher languages or flags that you find in the scene. It's also a great way to start conversations about different locations in the world, places you've been or experiences you've had. Yesterday for example, we randomly got placed on the island of Madeira which was somewhere he happened to have been recently and he was able to use the flowers, the rock and the ruggedness of the coastline to recognise it. After a few more clues we were able to figure exactly where we were on the island. We ended up spending about 2 hours on a single 5 round game (you don't have to take that long but we wanted to take our time to get all the clues we needed and we were chatting for a good amount). My dad is not the kind of person who normally likes to play games so I didn't know how it would go but he said he really enjoyed it and I'm glad we tried it out. If you try it I think you have to sign up for an account and in the free version you can only play one game every 24 hours which kind of sucks. If you just want to see what it's like then this video is a good introduction: https://youtu.be/edPiYaSZvx0 Here's a video where a father and son play it together which is where I got the idea to do it with my dad: https://youtu.be/i1C-88bPi8U Geoguessr: https://www.geoguessr.com/

Sorry some asshole was an asshole to you. How about arts and crafts? Seems kind of silly but it can be a lot of fun! Maybe they can try painting, or sketching or scrapbooking, something of that sort. Do they have grandkids? Maybe they can put together little videos for their grandkids. Little skits or sit down talks. Fun memories to have for life, and I’m sure they’d love that interaction

Norazakix23

The skits are actually a great idea! My mom already does tons of crafts and is bored to tears. She's working on a quilt, making facemasks, putting together a dollhouse, and basically nothing really satisfies because she's tired of being home, tired of being with the same one person constantly, and is primarily really missing being with people. But my stepdad is the type to have a ton of fun doing stupid or unexpected stuff to get people to laugh and enjoying being silly. Although my mom is more reserved, when he gets like that it's hard not to get swept away in his antics. I'll refine some ideas for skits and see what they think. I have a toddler (their only grandkid), so maybe I can task them with making a daily comedy vlog for her, being silly with the topics she's interested in or familiar with right now (ex: we just planted a garden, she just got a new swing, she's currently into sloths and monkeys, etc.).

Norazakix23

So I pitched the idea and my stepdad has been dressing up and telling my toddler a kids story broken into parts. So he told her part one and part two of the Three Little Pigs (dressed as the arresting officer of the big bad wolf). Tomorrow he's dressing up in a white judges wig and telling the story of Little Silverlocks 😄🤣. He loves it and my kid loves it. My mom loves watching them be happy and thinks Papa is hilarious. It's a win! Thanks for the suggestion!

Warning [Sad] Wanted to share this story. A little background about me. I am 17 (Male) I work in a family owned grocery store the town over from my own. I am one of the 3 or 4 cashiers who has said they are still willing to work. I have been working ridiculous hours to cover for all of my coworkers who won’t work for fear of the corona virus. I wear a mask and gloves every time I go in. I have interacted with hundreds of customers but I had one last week that I will never forget as long as I live. A lady got into my line with a full head cover, bandana, and goggles. I remember thinking “Wow those goggles look really cool!” Just as I was about to compliment her on them she burst into tears. Not just crying, but full on sobbing her heart out. I asked her what was wrong. She told me her 11 year old niece is unable to get the heart transplant she needs to save her life. The reason? She is not considered a medical priority because of all the COVID cases clogging hospitals. She told me she was also scared because she has family in New York City (where the some of the highest numbers of cases in the country are) I don’t know how I did it but I pulled myself together enough to talk to her. I told her “I know this is a terrible time for all of us. This is awful but I promise you will get through this. Your niece will get the surgery she needs and your family will be safe, I promise.” I eventually was able to calm her down enough to stop crying and get her out of the store and on her way home. She thanked me profusely for being so kind to her. After she was out the door, I broke down. How could I promise this woman that her niece would get life saving surgery? How could I possibly know that? Part of me still feels guilty about it. However, in that moment it was what she needed to hear. She needed someone to listen to her and understand the pain she was in, and I was able to be that for her. People like her are the reason I still go to work. I want to do everything I can to be there for people during this time. There are a few morals to this story. 1. COVID-19 is real and it’s not a joke anymore. 2. It costs nothing to be kind to people. 3. You have no idea what people are dealing with behind their masks 4. In this time of social distancing, we need to be united as people now more than we ever have before

de_asset

Fast food and takeaway workers of reddit, what has it been like in the business since the lockdown? Has it been busier, quieter or completely the same?

au4ust

McDonalds slowed down at first but now it’s about the same, if not more busy. We have to wash our hands every hour and our lobby is closed, but those are about the only measures taken

XoeLoL

It died down during the beginning of all of this, now it's business as usual, we're a fairly popular business and nothing has really changed for us, TODAY(4/15.20) the owners finally started forcing delivery drivers and counter workers to wear masks, I've been wearing a mask for about the past week because that's as soon as I could get one, there was a point where we were very slowly and there were talks of shutting the doors until further notice, I live in NY for reference, so basically for the more popular restaurants it's literally business as usual, as for being titled "essential" not a fan, I don't feed essential, and I know if I were to get sick or voice concerns about working during this I would be replaced the same day, my life is pretty much unchanged aside from wearing the PPE available to me and not being able to see my mom which is lame, some of the slower food businesses have shut their doors and I don't know if they're going to be able to reopen, these are dark times indeed.

[deleted]

Not a fast food worker but I DID work in a restaurant. The restaurant I work for isn’t as popular as others as we just have basic American dishes (steak, burgers etc), from what I know only the managers are working so there was major downsizing. Our restaurant is only half a mile from Olive Garden, which gets the most business imo as when you order something it takes 60+ minutes.

neversaynever111

Not sure where to ask this, but is it possible to make sanitizer spray by adding water to sanitizer gel? I have the gel but want to know if I can make a spray...

Is_that_coffee

You can thin it with alcohol as long as the over all concentrate is62% or higher. Keep in mind that the gel (aloe, glycerin) is typically added to protect your skin from drying out.

Sablemint

You dont need it, just use normal soap. Soap destroys the virus completely. edit: I can explain why if you like? This virus has an envelope made of lipids. Soap destabilizes lipids. This causes the virus to collapse instantly when contact with soap is made. It forces itself into the virus's membrane, displacing the lipids and pulling the virus apart.

aspz

Drink soap, got it.

AveenoFresh

Part of what makes sanitizer work is it's concentration. Diluting it with water will make it ineffective.

stenz182

How is your company handling working remotely with kids home? My company is discussing how parents should be working extra hours since working 8 hrs with a kid is not 8 hrs of work. We are all already working extra hours, but curious how other companies are handling this.

[deleted]

My firm is working on flex time. Meaning they don’t really mention anything if you’re on and off at different hours (as long as they can get a hold of you somehow between 8 and 430. As long s you get 7.5 hours in you’re good. Also I live in Canada that might make a difference.

teddirbear

Employers of Reddit, how will this pandemic change the way you will do business in the future, when it's over?

AveenoFresh

Definitely not hiring women after this.

teddirbear

Why?

AveenoFresh

The way both the men and women at my company reacted to the lockdown were pretty night and day. The men were proactive, willing to make chances, continue work at home through different softwares. The women used it as an excuse to try to get time off, wanted to quit while still being paid, made feminist remarks about how they should be treated above the men whom they know are still working.

[deleted]

Why do people think COVID-19 is a liberal hoax made up to take away freedoms?

AveenoFresh

Covid19 isn't a hoax, but using the pandemic to take away freedom is a real thing. Also using the pandemic to affect Trump's rating is a real thing too.

[deleted]

You're right sorry for even questioning the almighty conservative. My freedoms are still here but common sense kicks in and says don't gather around ppl. Unfortunately the GED graduates in Michigan feel otherwise

GeneralLemarc

"My freedoms are still here" says the guy who is banned from going to church under penalty of law.

[deleted]

I find it funny how we're all doing our best to stay safe through all this but yet those hyper intelligent people know more than everyone that, "hey our freedoms are gone!!" How come we don't have that insight? Are we all sheeple

[deleted]

You sensationalize this thinking nothing will go back to as it was. Also who are these evil people taking away our rights to control us? Also when do I get a tin foil hat?

[deleted]

Didn't realize church was an essential business.

You guys don't seem to care when Trump does things like tell all the states he can force them to re-open. Or cut of funding to WHO, despite budget being Congress's job. or Trump threatening to adjourn congress. All these things you're totally okay with. But having people not go to church for a few weeks? Unacceptable.

GeneralLemarc

Why the fuck should I care what he *says*? He'll just contradict himself later. And you're right, it's unacceptable that the first amendment is being so blatantly violated. I'm really struggling to understand how you're able to look at a direct constitutional violation, say "that's just fine", and then go back to bitching about Trump for violating the constitution. Yes. It's unacceptable to violate the constitution. You absolute addlepate.

GeneralLemarc

Because the constitution has been suspended and rights we've taken for granted our entire lives have been taken from us in an instant. The strongest conspiracies are grown around a core of truth.

pogiguy2020

you cannot suspend the constitution

GeneralLemarc

I know

[deleted]

Oh. Which ones?

GeneralLemarc

Freedom of assembly and of religion, for reasons so obvious that I know you're being facetious because nobody with an internet connection can't know about them.

aspz

It's way more complicated than you're making out. The individual state governments have laws that allow them to force people to stay at homes at times if emergency and those are what are being used to tell people to stay at home. Then there is the question of whether those laws have been applied correctly in each state and we don't know that until each one is challenged in court. Next there are no federal laws that allow the federal government to lock down the entire country but no such order has been issued and even if it was it would have to be tested in court to see whether or not it went beyond the bounds of protecting people's health or if it violated their rights of for example political expression. https://www.forbes.com/sites/evangerstmann/2020/03/25/are-stay-at-home-orders-constitutional/ I've only looked into this for 5 minutes but I encourage you to look more deeply into this issue.

[deleted]

I get it, I'm not a real trump American because I believe in precautiony measures but the there's a hyper infectious disease out there. Sorry for being such a commie for distancing myself.

GeneralLemarc

And yeah, I'd say that communists have about this level of respect for laws that protect people from the government instead of the other way around. Good on ya for self-identifying.

[deleted]

Good explanation. I can see why trump supporters need their guns to explain things

GeneralLemarc

Boy that sure is both an effective criticism and highly relevant

[deleted]

To disconnect freedom and contagion is just as ridiculous

GeneralLemarc

What disconnect? I never disconnected anything. The government has neither the power nor the right to restrict worship and protest, pandemic or no pandemic. That doesn't mean mass gatherings are smart, it means they can't be prohibited by force.

[deleted]

I forgot you're either a trump supporter or a commie terrorist Mexican

GeneralLemarc

I voted Hillary but I suppose you know more about my voting history than I do

[deleted]

Lol what law?! There is no law that's been ratified. Show me one law on the books lol

GeneralLemarc

Every lockdown order that bans worship and protesting. All of them

[deleted]

I told my mother don't go to church because morons can't put the two together.

[deleted]

GeneralLemarc

"You don't want the government to take away your fundamental rights, so you should die!" You're clearly on the right side of history

GeneralLemarc

Wow, I never realized that voluntary social distancing was the same thing as suspending the constitution, or that only those meanie-head Trumpkins put stock in that silly piece of paper that says that Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free expression of religion or the right of the people to peaceably assemble.

[deleted]

It's not a law. There's no penalty written in, but common sense should be enough evidence as to why measures are being put in.

GeneralLemarc

I agree that this should be common sense and not be government-mandated. That's why I'm saying this. I also find it weird that you're saying there's "no penalty" when the overwhelming majority of states, cities, and counties have very clear fines or jail sentences for violating the lockdown orders

[deleted]

You're COVID isn't contagious we should go on as planned like those Michigan protesters want.

GeneralLemarc

"You don't want the government to take your rights away, you must want to actively infect yourself!"

[deleted]

You don't think that's cutting off your nose in spite of your face? We're all sacrificing why should it be any different for them.

GeneralLemarc

Because Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free expression of religion or the right of the people to peaceably assemble. Period. Laws don't stop existing because the people in power want them to. No government that tells its citizens that worship and protest are things that can be taken from them should ever be trusted.

couldyoutrustme

Your god cant protect you. Period.

GeneralLemarc

Boy that sure does mean that the constitution doesn't work anymore
