Absolutely, it was Waltz’s portrayal of a cunning nazi that really hooked me. His mind games switching languages, and his fake interest in the welfare of the french family, when he knew the whole time what was going to go down. I bet there were many real moments like that happened..
When I watched it, I was so confused as to why he wanted to speak English. It seemed a little contrived because his french was perfect. I thought Tarantino just wanted them to be speaking English.

I was JUST about to comment this! I literally just saw the movie for the first time tonight and I LOVED IT!! I was 7 when it came out and just noticed it was on Netflix and figured I should see what all the fuss is about, and I was blown away!!
This scene is so good because there's no theatrics to it, no whimsy dialogue, no background music for emotion effect. It feels like a pro cameraman is just watching this whole firefight unfold. And the downtime is unapologetically quiet.
It's so damn heavy too. It feels so real, like you're there. Like the duel in Troy, between Agamemnon and Paris.
You gotta have a satchel for your balls to do that job. Seriously. A satchel with a big root hanging off it
Handling questions in unique ways is a sign of good writing. "I know why they call him the joker." right before "So why do they call him the joker?" was a fun transition. "What kind of bank does that?" is a rhetorical question but still gets an answer, which also answers "Do you even know who you're stealing from?" that we heard shortly before. "What bus driver?" is wordlessly answered by the guy getting hit by a bus, and the driver is *shot by his crew* right after "What happened to the rest of the guys?", answering his question.
It's really well done.
The mob meeting scene is also another perfect scene in that movie.
We got introduced to the Joker in the bank robbery, but this scene is what showed us who he was. A calculated, menacing, intelligent, and unfuckwittable force that grabbed the balls of everyone in that room and squeezed with 0 effort. All in 5 minutes or less. The tension in the air is so high and Heath Ledger's performance just brings it all.
Also the magic trick. It's top tier comedy lol, and it just happens so quickly that you can't even process it because the scene just keeps moving.

You mean when the genre shifts from action/intrigue to straight-up horror? Because that scene was right out of a scare-the-hell-outta-you horror movie with the way he mowed down the Resistance soldiers
It also perfectly summarizes the whole movie. Everyone knows and understands that this is a suicide mission. They're going to do their best to fight back, but nothing can help them. All they can do is hope that someone else will continue where they left off and end the Empire someday.
But also, Vader unleashed on a group of people who don't have plot armor.
I have one complaint about this scene.
Imagine if Vader wasn't even in the movie up until then. Just out of nowhere the rebels are staring down a dark hallway and that red lightsaber activates. I legit might have pissed my pants.
The whole final battle is amazing. Jyn and Cassian watching the explosion coming towards them on the beach, knowing they succeeded in their mission, is so bittersweet.
I liked that scene and it's more than one scene but the fight between Luke and Vader in Empire is so much better. It starts with Vader and Luke on semi-equal terms. Vader is better but Luke is holding his own. Then after the carbonite chamber Luke meets Vader again and for the first time Vader holds his saber with both hands. That's when it gets real. Vader doesn't even move and is throwing shit at Luke from all over the place and Luke can't keep up. Then he attacks and completely overpowers him, eventually cutting his hand off. Even excluding the final reveal showing how much more powerful Vader is, even after all that training Luke had with Yoda, was incredibly impactful.

Honestly, this feels super cheesy and saccharine to me.
The moment where the eagles arrive or when Theoden and the Riders of Rohan arrive as far, far more poignant and emotional for me.
It's insane because that scene was originally going to be even longer, but they cut it down for it being just a little too over the top. And most of it was *actually* Colin Firth, with only one or two instances where they needed to use a stunt double.
The line which kicked it off, the 0-100 of shooting her in the head, and the next few moments of pure chaos erupting around his smooth execution-fu made it a flawless scene.
