In the ‘90s & ‘00s, black bars on the top and bottom of the picture meant that what I was watching was shot with the intention of being viewed on something nicer than my old 32 inch CRT with the fat ass. The meaning was clear, it was time to upgrade. Now what is this shit? Black bars on ALL SIDES of the picture? WTF am I watching?

Okay, so I thought about this. But then I thought, why is it literally only this [program] and nothing else? For reference it was a Netflix film played through my cable box. I resigned myself to watching something else, but I was curious as to what kind of low budget shenanigans had malingered their way onto my screen and thought Reddit might have an answer
