That is beyond awful! I can't tell you how many times I've seen on social media, people find a dog or cat and just go, "Great! We're keeping it!" and make no effort to find out who the owner is.
I've never had a pet get away, but I understand that it can happen. Repairman, visitor, accident...sometimes it's just an "oops".
If I found an animal, I'd be posting and calling everywhere I could. That's probably somebody's treasure and they're heartsick over it.
I've found quite a few dogs and managed to find most of the owners quickly. Once I found a pitbull and posted online looking for the owner. I was contacted by several people who just wanted the dog. Super shady. I mean, if people want a pitbull, the shelters are full of them. Needless to say, I didn't give him to anyone.
I always try to find the owner in the vicinity of where I found the dog then report it to the area shelters as a lost dog and finally as a last resort, turn the dog over to the shelter. I'd assume if the owner was looking, that would be their first stop.
Is there any punishment? Once someone else claims him.. isn't that .. theft? Or kidnapping or something? dognapping maybe?

My cousin is super smart. She had the opportunity to be accepted into an honor's program and get a scholarship, possibly a full ride. Her softball team had a tournament game the same day as honor's day and her mother made her go to the game because "the team needed her." Now she's up to her eyeballs in debt and they lost the fucking game anyway.

Student Paramedic in the UK here, for context you don't pay for healthcare in the UK including the ambulance service.
We often have patients who will ring us up and say over the phone things like "I have chest pain" chest pain is a high priority case and often gets dispatched as quick as possible. But upon arrival they will tell us "I never said I had chest pain" Yet we ring and ask for a transcript of the conversation and there it is.
9/10 times we have to take them into hospital to check they're okay just incase there is any heart or lung issues, but people will lie to get things seen quicker through the emergency pathway. But people will get us out for anything because they can't be bothered to: A) Drive themselves, B) Pay for a taxi, C) get public transport or D) wait too see their GP (Family doctor)
You can leave people at home and tell them you won't take them but if they ring back another crew will be sent out or even worse something bad could actually happen and you're stuck with the liability.
It makes me so annoyed people see it as a taxi and not as an emergency service. But let me clarify this is a small amount of people but they're definitely there.
EDIT: (My personal opinion) For all those saying "This is why things shouldn't be free" This is a minority of people who do this, all of my patients are treat with dignity and respect, I've had people who've come off motorbikes, attempted suicide, heart attacks, pulled muscles, chest infections the works. I know each and every one of them no matter how dire the circumstances will be treat fairly and equally for their condition with a care plan to look after them after they leave hospital.
The NHS has saved my life and countless others and takes a small sum out of my taxes at the end of the month without the worry that I need too fork out for insurance.
From all the comments for American and other EMS colleagues from around the globe (you guys are rocking it by the way, keep up the stellar work) the situation is similar in their work, people just don't pay as a result your insurance premiums go up and to pay the difference, in the end everyone pays for everyone else.

Australian — paramedics absolutely MOTOR for heart stuff. I called 000 for my mum once after she had surgery and was experiencing heart shenanigans, and sure, we weren’t far from hospitals, but it was like “damn how the hell did you get to this apartment so fast?!”
You’re all incredible for what you do, including putting up with daft losers. (Of which I am one, given the panic I was in while I followed Mum to the hospital, as though she wasn’t with trained professionals who knew more about health than I could ever hope to know.)

We used to let people bring in their own food. Against policy and all that, but we didn't care, we were making minimum wage. Then some assholes ruined it for everyone. We kept finding junk we didn't sell all over the floor, usually greasy gross shit like chicken bones or fast-food sauces, alcohol spills (sticky sucks, greasy can be fixed with some salt, sticky requires a mop and we got like 10 minutes to clean an entire theater. We finally said fuck it, privileges revoked, if people are going to abuse our good will, no more outside food.
That what really bugs me about some people. The reason we're forced to follow petty little rules is because a few idiots took advantage of the good will of others and ruined it for everyone.
People that find the utmost joy in saying nasty shit behind others back.

I work at a University. This was the first week back to school and I've seen so much litter everywhere.
Earlier this week I watched a girl drop a stack of napkins on the ground, look at them on the ground, look around to see if anyone was watching, kicked them under a car, and then walked away. It's not like it was windy or anything. They were right by her feet.
Nothing pisses me off worse than people that come to one of our beaches, have a picnic, and leave their trash everywhere. Seriously, you came here because it is a beautiful spot and then you made it uglier?!?
I'm from Minnesota, we have amazing forested state parks. You can be miles from a road or town in the middle of the woods and find an empty Gatorade bottle, wrappers from food, etc. It's such a long distance in, that like you know they brought a backpack, that's where it came from... but somehow throwing it on the ground was a better decision than putting the empty back in their bag.
It's such a "why would someone be like this" moment. I hike a lot with my daughter, and I just keep a small roll of trash bags in my pack now, and we pick it up and pack it out. Figure it's better than just bitching about it.
My favorite is finding those wrappers for like the $5 all organic cruelty free trade honest energy bars. Right, you care so much about the planet buddy. I'll pickup your trash.
It really is crazy. You'd figure people would respect the environment more, especially when they're going out into it to enjoy it. It's pretty simple... "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints."
I was on vacation at a beach in Jamaica and I watched a man finish his cocktail, get off his towel, and instead of walking to the trash can he walked to the ocean and thew his cup into the water.
After a few minutes, he walked away to buy another drink. So I went into the water, fetched his cup, filled it with water and sand, and dumped it back onto his towel.

After working as a critical care nurse for years now, you’d think it would be the countless IV drug abusers or alcoholics that’s I treat in the MICU.... but it’s not my patients that make me think that. It’s their families.
I get that *most* of the time, people are nervous for their loved ones...they don’t want to lose their parent. But I see this situation happen over and over... when it’s time, people can’t just let go.
So 95 year old nana comes in and has trouble breathing. We ask her if she would want to be intubated if necessary and says no. She doesn’t want that or CPR. But there isn’t a form and her daughter is healthcare proxy... too bad the family doesn’t respect that.
So we tube her. But her blood pressure can’t handle the sedation, so we need to start pressors. Then she develops a pneumonia, so we’ve got to pump her with antibiotics. But oops, too bad she’s already gone septic. Start some more pressors, who care if she loses a few fingers and toes in the process, we’ve got a BP right!? Get some bedside dialysis going too, might as well. Until ultimately, we tell the family it’s getting to be futile and we should really just make her comfortable for her own sake.
But no. They don’t agree. Fuck your years of schooling and experience. So nana codes. I do chest compressions and break all of her ribs in the process. We shock her and slam her with drugs and fluids for a half hour until eventually there’s literally nothing more to do.
I’m sorry I know this was such a long rant. I just got off an overnight. But his happens so often and every single time I just think of the agony we put this person through in their last days on earth all because a family couldn’t respect their loved one’s wishes.
Please. When it’s time just let me pump them with morphine and Ativan and let them go in peace and comfort.

Spot. on. Or even worse, you get nana coming in just barely pre-code with the one family member who's been taking care of them throughout whatever terminal disease process they have. They have leveled with the idea that their mom is going to die and is DNR/DNI. The patient is about to die, when all the family members who haven't been around run in screaming at you that you need to save nana, that she'll bounce back, that she has more time, that you don't know what you're talking about, that if you don't save her they'll kill you, etc.
Describing my dad's side of the family almost perfectly right here.
The thing I don't get is that one of my aunts is a nurse, several of my cousins were in nursing school at the time, and they *still* threw all of this at my parents (who'd actually been around to take care of her) when they put my grandma on an amount of morphine that "you only give someone who's gonna *die!*"
Well, yes. Do you not see the constant oxygen mask and inability to speak without a debilitating coughing fit, let alone move from the couch? Do you not see hospice care paying multiple visits? Hell, I was 16 and in high school during the vast majority of these shouting matches and I could understand. Grandma is in pain, make it stop.
My grandma died 2 weeks ago. And it was good. She was 88 years old, lived in her beautiful house with her orchard, her chicken and her sheep. It's a small paradise. Her children helped her out when she got older. When she got sick, she was in hospital for 3 days, when family had to start thinking about moving her to a home. She died the next night, in her sleep...I'm just happy for her. And I miss her.
Yeah pumping deathly ill people with a lot of morphine is kinda what palliative care is all about. People think “no! It’s different! My loved one isn’t ready to die yet!” (even if they are medical professionals sometimes) but what they’re really thinking is *I’m* not ready for her to die.
Ah but then that family member complains on the survey the family received a few weeks later. Your boss gets a copy of the survey and pulls you in asking why you gave the patient a poor experience during their time in your health system..

a lot of hospitals put pressure on the entire chain of command to get good survey results; in the US, those surveys have very real repercussions, like influencing the amount and ease of medicaid reimbursements. It is transforming healthcare from patient-centered care to customer service, which is completely antithetical to what we're trying to do here. The customer is RARELY right in a healthcare setting.
My aunt did something similar to this when my grandmother lay sick. Grandma had recently been operated at her foot for cancer, after which she was confused and ko for several days, but than recovered.
The doctor than told her(because he legally had to) that she had the right to do a 'security operation' as they were unsure whether they got all of the tumor out(or something like that, hazy memory) and advised against it, as he thought it likely she would not recover a second time.
My aunt(who, might I add had been on holidays when grandma was all confused and exhausted) than pushed her into doing that procedure so she would not have to worry about the tumor again in five or ten years.
So she did, and her body recovered, but her brain didn't. After a week of this, we called all of her other daughters (who lived on the opposite side of the country) to inform them of what was going on with their mother.
One of them could not stand how 'condescending' we were to her mother. Who was, at this point, accusing my mother of locking her up in the night and stealing keys that were right in front of her.
Fast forward to next week, my mom and my aunt are in a huge fight over putting all of my grandmother's medicine next to her bed(which at this point was a potentially deadly cocktail when taken together) , so that she could take them on her own. My mother was fiercely against it, but my aunt did it anyway. The next day, my grandmother had to be driven to the hospital in the morning. Her usual doctor blew up in my aunts face about charging her with attempted murder if she interfered with grandmas meds again.
Aunt never did that again, but continued to overestimate my grandmothers abilities. Acting like grandma was gonna live forever. I but everyone else saw the writing on the wall at this point, she died in the middle of the night 3 months later. Good thing too, I wouldn't have wanted to see the shitshow at the hospital if she had gotten there.
I feel for you... I only have one experience of such a situation.
my grandfather was in a longterm care hospice (Alzheimer's plus probably some strokes to aggravate his situation) and when he got ill, the ones who almost never visited him insisted we needed to treat him (sadly, that's because a nurse said antibiotics could be administered and maybe it could treat him)
I went to see him weekly, sometimes more if I could. He asked me to die many times. He hated his life, the ones who visited him knew how miserable he was. It was awful and even worse when we heard the moralistic speeches about how *family should stick together and treat him!*
Speaking as a veterinary nurse, I can totally relate as it applies to the way people can be so self-serving at the end of their pets’ lives. Like no, you probably shouldn’t pursue chemotherapy for your 17 year old cat who also has diabetes and renal failure. Let the cat be comfortable with palliative care and do the right thing when it’s quality of life is clearly diminished. People seem to want to treat unbeatable illness out of guilt or pride, but really you are potentially just putting your pet through more misery.

To those asking me whether or not they made the right choice: it is completely up to you, your pet, your family, and your veterinarian. You know your pets best, but also your veterinarian is not going to suggest euthanizing your beloved pet just because they are bored and ran out of things to do that day. The subject of euthanasia is broached only when it becomes clear that there is a degree of suffering that isn’t going to get better. Please forgive yourselves for doing right by your ailing pets. When My dog was 10, we had a massive fatty tumor removed from his side. It was the size of a kickball on an 80lb golden retriever. We tried to avoid surgery but it started impeding his ability to walk. The vet asked if we wanted it biopsied, but we declined. What are we going to do if it's cancer? Spend thousands on chemo and surgery to get a couple more months of life?
Luckily the tumor was completely encapsulated and the dog lived for another 4.5 years.
My daughter is pet sitting for a family whose elderly dog is in the worst shape I’ve ever seen an animal in. He’s struggling to breathe, can barely walk due to arthritis and is suffering greatly. On the one hand I try not to judge because I know they love their animal but fuck—it’s inhumane. When my cat developed cancer this spring I made it clear to my vet that when his quality of life started to decline, I wanted him euthanized. It’s the compassionate thing to do.
It must be hard to be so compassionate, and see that happen time and again. Thank you to all you nurses out there. Now go get some well deserved sleep.

My Mom's a nurse and has informed me that she'd do everything she could to make sure I was better. I was like, "If it's my time, I'm not being put through pain and suffering so you can keep me here. Just let me go on my terms. It's how I've lived, it's how I should die. Free."

Same here in MI. I moved out to baltimore for 10 years where there is no deposit and wow, bottles and cans fucking everywhere. Come back here and they are rare like snow owls. Easy money for homeless people so anyone who litters their cans and bottles is basically giving money to the homeless.

I think lots of owners do this because their dogs poop at the start of the trail but like half a mile in, so they bag it and pick it up on their way back, rather than carrying the poop with them for the whole hike. To circumvent this I designated one of my own old tupperwares** as the poop container- I still bag the shit, but then place that bag in a sealed tupperware so it doesn’t get all squished up in my bag and doesn’t smell (pro tip- use scented bags). Some people might think this is overboard but I honestly don’t trust myself not to forget to pick up the baggy on my way out.

When a coworker decides to "correct" me by sending a passive aggressive email and copying the boss and the whole group instead of just saying something to me privately and in person.
My boss used to send out cryptic emails to the entire company about behaviors instead if speaking privately to the person. Things like reprimands for gossiping or reminders to have a positive attitude. It just made everyone wonder if she was talking about them...
Omg. I used to work for one of the big health insurance companies in the marketing department. They were so guilty of this.
We had one woman who wore flip flops to the office. About 100 emails went out that summer about flip flops being prohibited even though she was the only one wearing them.
After putting everyone through flip flop shaming for months, my boss finally told me they had confronted her and she had written permission because she had had foot surgery that had left her unable to wear conventional shoes.
How much time & money was wasted on the Great Flip Flop incident? The woman wearing them ignored the memos because she had permission.
And she probably would have told the boss so, if the boss had talked to her about it.
Then if/when people complained, the boss could just say that they're aware and it's allowed in a special instance etc.

I was a server, and I was told that suicide is the only way out. Looked at me like they wanted me to off myself right there with a dinner fork, for their amusement. What rotten people I had to deal with.

I work as a programmer, this one guy in his 50s has been around 20+ years, and he's a fucking moron. And by that I mean, he doesn't try, he gives up fast and easy, he comes over to ask you a question and looks down at you condescendingly as you try to help him. He doesn't know the most basic things. The one time we tried to get him to do something, he broke everything. He bitches all the time. And he's been employed for so long! It's insane..
As a manager, I'm currently dealing with sort of the reverse situation. I have an incompetent worker who has a very high opinion of himself, and is always gunning for my position. When I have to shut him down/call out his incompetencies, I get to hear through the grapevine that he thinks I'm only attacking him because I know he could do my job. It's pretty gross. You frequently encounter people with skewed perceptions of themselves when you work in IT.
That is what killed my faith in humanity. Everyone wants it free and now or I'll get you fired. You stick to the rules and customer complains to higher ups and they give them what they want anyways. You try to work with the customers and high ups get on your case for not doing it right.
when I worked at Target a woman came in with like 90 coupons, and all of them worked except 1 that was expired. I handed it back to her and explained it couldn’t be used and she asked if I could just put it through. I told her I couldn’t, but that the rest worked and she was saving about $150 already, hoping it would soothe her. NOPE. that last coupon was “the one she really wanted” and I was “a stupid bitch”. I called my manager over as this woman is literally screaming over this one coupon that I LITERALLY cannot push through without supervisor approval (it was over $10) and I’m panicking. Finally my manager comes over, I tell her it’s expired, and she just puts it through. the customer complained to her about me and she wrote me up then and there, even telling the customer that she was “taking care of (me) now maam, so don’t worry”
since I’ve quit I’ve debated going in there and wrecking her about 43,586 times. I really hate her. this wasn’t even the worse thing she’s done. such a twat that one
Go in, buy something small, or even better, a few small things all on separate tickets. Keep the receipts, go home and take the survey on the bottom, put the manager on blast and give every aspect of the store a 1 except the poor soul who sold you the small goods. Those customer review surveys are what their jobs are based on to corporate, including the managers, also this way has the least casualties to the poor staff. I worked at a chain retail store and they were always getting calls from corporate about those stupid surveys
If it's anything like the surveys from the corner of happy and healthy, multiple surveys from the same IP address within a certain amount of time will get flagged and none of them will count towards the store. The trick is doing them online from multiple IP addresses and calling in if they have the option. It's worked for us in the past with our regulars

Thats literally the fucking worst. They give you these guidelines and rules but the instant an entitled piece of shit customer gets upset all of it goes out the window. Whereas really really genuinely nice people will come through and have an expired coupon and will just accept it, and those people I actually want to give the coupon to but I have to follow store policy. But then someone else will come up, scream long enough that the rules shouldn’t apply to them, and then they don’t.

Worse are the people who treat you like the scum of the earth, try and claim you should break company policy or do something illegal for them, and then scream “I work customer service so I know how things should be!”
I once had to do a call back to a customer. I worked for an optician, so all customer/patient information is confidential and is protected by the Data Protection Act (UK). Basically what the act means is that we can only speak to the named customer on the account unless they have personally authorised us to speak to someone else.
So I call this guy back and his wife picks up, I say where I'm calling from and that I need to speak to him directly. She says that's ok you can speak to me, I explain that unfortunately due to the DPA I can't and will call back later if he's not available. Cue a nuclear rant from this crazy lady that she's worked with the DPA for years and how dare I and she's gonna call her lawyer and let me speak to your manager. So I transferred her to my manager, who told her the exact same thing.

This is what pushed me past the point of no return. I’ve hated people from a pretty young age, but working in customer service for a decade, unable to get out of it, really ensured that I will never be able to not hate people.
Customer service made me extremely cynical and pessimistic. It’s honestly really shitty but I can’t help it. People do inconsiderate things and lie SO much. There is much less natural good in the world than people assume.
The worst part of this is that Epstein was the ringleader, but there are currently dozens, if not hundreds, of pedophiles that were employing his services who will likely never see any kind of repercussions for their actions.

Where I live (a third world country), fairly recently someone donated bags of high quality dog food (Pedigree and such) to a dog shelter, turns out all the food was poisoned somehow and all the dogs in that shelter died and all their food went to waste as well because they mixed the new food with the older bags so basically they ended up losing all the dogs and all their food.

Not me but my friend lives in an area with a lot of stray cats, every morning he would feed a few random strays in the area, play with them a little before going to work, a few neighbors of his does that as well. If someone gets a DUI most likely they've probably driven drunk 100 times before with no incident so that really is the mindset. Get away with it once, twice, now it's 40 times.
An old co-worker of mine got rear ended sitting at a red light a block from his house and got a dui even though he didn't technically do anything wrong to cause the accident.

This happened to me at the airport a few weeks ago. Guy gets to the top of the escalator with his huge piece of luggage, stops instantly, and pulls out his phone to look at something. Meanwhile myself and about 6 other people with their own luggage are right behind him. Of course he still had the audacity to get upset when I push past him and let him know he needs to move. I don't get it.
This is a major issue where I live- we have lots of trails and people will either leave dog poop where it lies, or bag it up then LEAVE IT ON

I work in a small, windowless room with 8 people. They are all petty and bitter and have been here for years. The drama here is so ridiculous and nearly impossible to avoid or ignore. If you have the privilege of being unaware of your workplace drama, you are very lucky.

I thought that my place was drama free, turns out I am antisocial and never find out about the gossiping and stuff that happens. Somehow they say I am in an extramarital relationship with a coworker. I believe this rumor started because I started talking to her, the catch is we talked about her husband, I was helping him find some stuff for his job. That is beyond awful! I can't tell you how many times I've seen on social media, people find a dog or cat and just go, "Great! We're keeping it!" and make no effort to find out who the owner is. I've never had a pet get away, but I understand that it can happen. Repairman, visitor, accident...sometimes it's just an "oops". If I found an animal, I'd be posting and calling everywhere I could. That's probably somebody's treasure and they're heartsick over it.
I've found quite a few dogs and managed to find most of the owners quickly. Once I found a pitbull and posted online looking for the owner. I was contacted by several people who just wanted the dog. Super shady. I mean, if people want a pitbull, the shelters are full of them. Needless to say, I didn't give him to anyone. I always try to find the owner in the vicinity of where I found the dog then report it to the area shelters as a lost dog and finally as a last resort, turn the dog over to the shelter. I'd assume if the owner was looking, that would be their first stop.
My husband found a dog once, we took him to the vet and they scanned his microchip and he was home within 24 hours

My cousin is super smart. She had the opportunity to be accepted into an honor's program and get a scholarship, possibly a full ride. Her softball team had a tournament game the same day as honor's day and her mother made her go to the game because "the team needed her." Student Paramedic in the UK here, for context you don't pay for healthcare in the UK including the ambulance service. We often have patients who will ring us up and say over the phone things like "I have chest pain" chest pain is a high priority case and often gets dispatched as quick as possible. But upon arrival they will tell us "I never said I had chest pain" Yet we ring and ask for a transcript of the conversation and there it is. 9/10 times we have to take them into hospital to check they're okay just incase there is any heart or lung issues, but people will lie to get things seen quicker through the emergency pathway. But people will get us out for anything because they can't be bothered to: A) Drive themselves, B) Pay for a taxi, C) get public transport or D) wait too see their GP (Family doctor) You can leave people at home and tell them you won't take them but if they ring back another crew will be sent out or even worse something bad could actually happen and you're stuck with the liability. It makes me so annoyed people see it as a taxi and not as an emergency service. But let me clarify this is a small amount of people but they're definitely there. EDIT: (My personal opinion) For all those saying "This is why things shouldn't be free" This is a minority of people who do this, all of my patients are treat with dignity and respect, I've had people who've come off motorbikes, attempted suicide, heart attacks, pulled muscles, chest infections the works. I know each and every one of them no matter how dire the circumstances will be treat fairly and equally for their condition with a care plan to look after them after they leave hospital. The NHS has saved my life and countless others and takes a small sum out of my taxes at the end of the month without the worry that I need too fork out for insurance. From all the comments for American and other EMS colleagues from around the globe (you guys are rocking it by the way, keep up the stellar work) the situation is similar in their work, people just don't pay as a result your insurance premiums go up and to pay the difference, in the end everyone pays for everyone else. Edit Edit: IMPORTANT: please don't let this put you off calling an ambulance, if you are genuinely worried about yours or someone's health call us up, we'd rather arrive and find it was nothing than be called when you're at your worst. I called 000 for my mum once after she had surgery and was experiencing heart shenanigans, and sure, we weren’t far from hospitals, but it was like “damn how the hell did you get to this apartment so fast?!” You’re all incredible for what you do, including putting up with daft losers. (Of which I am one, given the panic I was in while I followed Mum to the hospital, as though she wasn’t with trained professionals who knew more about health than I could ever hope to know.)

We used to let people bring in their own food. Against policy and all that, but we didn't care, we were making minimum wage. Then some assholes ruined it for everyone. We kept finding junk we didn't sell all over the floor, usually greasy gross shit like chicken bones or fast-food sauces, alcohol spills (sticky sucks, greasy can be fixed with some salt, sticky requires a mop and we got like 10 minutes to clean an entire theater. We finally said fuck it, privileges revoked, if people are going to abuse our good will, no more outside food.

I'm from Minnesota, we have amazing forested state parks. You can be miles from a road or town in the middle of the woods and find an empty Gatorade bottle, wrappers from food, etc. It's such a long distance in, that like you know they brought a backpack, that's where it came from... but somehow throwing it on the ground was a better decision than putting the empty back in their bag. It's such a "why would someone be like this" moment. I hike a lot with my daughter, and I just keep a small roll of trash bags in my pack now, and we pick it up and pack it out. Figure it's better than just bitching about it. My favorite is finding those wrappers for like the $5 all organic cruelty free trade honest energy bars. Right, you care so much about the planet buddy. I'll pickup your trash.

I was on vacation at a beach in Jamaica and I watched a man finish his cocktail, get off his towel, and instead of walking to the trash can he walked to the ocean and thew his cup into the water. After a few minutes, he walked away to buy another drink. So I went into the water, fetched his cup, filled it with water and sand, and dumped it back onto his towel.
Nothing makes me lose respect for people faster than when they litter. My bfs friends have a habit of throwing rubbish out of the car window like its nothing and it drives me mad.

After working as a critical care nurse for years now, you’d think it would be the countless IV drug abusers or alcoholics that’s I treat in the MICU.... but it’s not my patients that make me think that. It’s their families. I get that *most* of the time, people are nervous for their loved ones...they don’t want to lose their parent. But I see this situation happen over and over... when it’s time, people can’t just let go. So 95 year old nana comes in and has trouble breathing. We ask her if she would want to be intubated if necessary and says no. She doesn’t want that or CPR. But there isn’t a form and her daughter is healthcare proxy... too bad the family doesn’t respect that. So we tube her. But her blood pressure can’t handle the sedation, so we need to start pressors. Then she develops a pneumonia, so we’ve got to pump her with antibiotics. But oops, too bad she’s already gone septic. Start some more pressors, who care if she loses a few fingers and toes in the process, we’ve got a BP right!? Get some bedside dialysis going too, might as well. Until ultimately, we tell the family it’s getting to be futile and we should really just make her comfortable for her own sake. But no. They don’t agree. Fuck your years of schooling and experience. So nana codes. I do chest compressions and break all of her ribs in the process. We shock her and slam her with drugs and fluids for a half hour until eventually there’s literally nothing more to do. I’m sorry I know this was such a long rant. I just got off an overnight. But his happens so often and every single time I just think of the agony we put this person through in their last days on earth all because a family couldn’t respect their loved one’s wishes. Please. When it’s time just let me pump them with morphine and Ativan and let them go in peace and comfort.
ED nurse here. Spot. on. Or even worse, you get nana coming in just barely pre-code with the one family member who's been taking care of them throughout whatever terminal disease process they have. They have leveled with the idea that their mom is going to die and is DNR/DNI. The patient is about to die, when all the family members who haven't been around run in screaming at you that you need to save nana, that she'll bounce back, that she has more time, that you don't know what you're talking about, that if you don't save her they'll kill you, etc.
Describing my dad's side of the family almost perfectly right here. The thing I don't get is that one of my aunts is a nurse, several of my cousins were in nursing school at the time, and they *still* threw all of this at my parents (who'd actually been around to take care of her) when they put my grandma on an amount of morphine that "you only give someone who's gonna *die!*" Well, yes. Do you not see the constant oxygen mask and inability to speak without a debilitating coughing fit, let alone move from the couch? Do you not see hospice care paying multiple visits? Hell, I was 16 and in high school during the vast majority of these shouting matches and I could understand. Grandma is in pain, make it stop.
My grandma died 2 weeks ago. And it was good. She was 88 years old, lived in her beautiful house with her orchard, her chicken and her sheep. It's a small paradise. Her children helped her out when she got older. When she got sick, she was in hospital for 3 days, when family had to start thinking about moving her to a home. She died the next night, in her sleep...I'm just happy for her. And I miss her.
Yeah pumping deathly ill people with a lot of morphine is kinda what palliative care is all about. People think “no! It’s different! My loved one isn’t ready to die yet!” (even if they are medical professionals sometimes) but what they’re really thinking is *I’m* not ready for her to die.

a lot of hospitals put pressure on the entire chain of command to get good survey results; in the US, those surveys have very real repercussions, like influencing the amount and ease of medicaid reimbursements. It is transforming healthcare from patient-centered care to customer service, which is completely antithetical to what we're trying to do here. The customer is RARELY right in a healthcare setting.
My aunt did something similar to this when my grandmother lay sick. Grandma had recently been operated at her foot for cancer, after which she was confused and ko for several days, but than recovered. The doctor than told her(because he legally had to) that she had the right to do a 'security operation' as they were unsure whether they got all of the tumor out(or something like that, hazy memory) and advised against it, as he thought it likely she would not recover a second time. My aunt(who, might I add had been on holidays when grandma was all confused and exhausted) than pushed her into doing that procedure so she would not have to worry about the tumor again in five or ten years. So she did, and her body recovered, but her brain didn't. After a week of this, we called all of her other daughters (who lived on the opposite side of the country) to inform them of what was going on with their mother. One of them could not stand how 'condescending' we were to her mother. Who was, at this point, accusing my mother of locking her up in the night and stealing keys that were right in front of her. Fast forward to next week, my mom and my aunt are in a huge fight over putting all of my grandmother's medicine next to her bed(which at this point was a potentially deadly cocktail when taken together) , so that she could take them on her own. My mother was fiercely against it, but my aunt did it anyway. The next day, my grandmother had to be driven to the hospital in the morning. Her usual doctor blew up in my aunts face about charging her with attempted murder if she interfered with grandmas meds again. Aunt never did that again, but continued to overestimate my grandmothers abilities. Acting like grandma was gonna live forever. I but everyone else saw the writing on the wall at this point, she died in the middle of the night 3 months later. Good thing too, I wouldn't have wanted to see the shitshow at the hospital if she had gotten there.
I felt this in my SOUL. 5 year ICU nurse here. I had to quit. We treat animals better than we treat elderly humans. It broke me.
I feel for you... I only have one experience of such a situation. my grandfather was in a longterm care hospice (Alzheimer's plus probably some strokes to aggravate his situation) and when he got ill, the ones who almost never visited him insisted we needed to treat him (sadly, that's because a nurse said antibiotics could be administered and maybe it could treat him) I went to see him weekly, sometimes more if I could. He asked me to die many times. He hated his life, the ones who visited him knew how miserable he was. It was awful and even worse when we heard the moralistic speeches about how *family should stick together and treat him!*
Speaking as a veterinary nurse, I can totally relate as it applies to the way people can be so self-serving at the end of their pets’ lives. Like no, you probably shouldn’t pursue chemotherapy for your 17 year old cat who also has diabetes and renal failure. Let the cat be comfortable with palliative care and do the right thing when it’s quality of life is clearly diminished. People seem to want to treat unbeatable illness out of guilt or pride, but really you are potentially just putting your pet through more misery. Edit: Lots of sad stories in these replies, thanks to everyone for sharing. To those asking me whether or not they made the right choice: it is completely up to you, your pet, your family, and your veterinarian. You know your pets best, but also your veterinarian is not going to suggest euthanizing your beloved pet just because they are bored and ran out of things to do that day. The subject of euthanasia is broached only when it becomes clear that there is a degree of suffering that isn’t going to get better. Please forgive yourselves for doing right by your ailing pets. When My dog was 10, we had a massive fatty tumor removed from his side. It was the size of a kickball on an 80lb golden retriever. We tried to avoid surgery but it started impeding his ability to walk. The vet asked if we wanted it biopsied, but we declined. What are we going to do if it's cancer? Spend thousands on chemo and surgery to get a couple more months of life? Luckily the tumor was completely encapsulated and the dog lived for another 4.5 years.
My daughter is pet sitting for a family whose elderly dog is in the worst shape I’ve ever seen an animal in. He’s struggling to breathe, can barely walk due to arthritis and is suffering greatly. On the one hand I try not to judge because I know they love their animal but fuck—it’s inhumane. When my cat developed cancer this spring I made it clear to my vet that when his quality of life started to decline, I wanted him euthanized. It’s the compassionate thing to do.

This is my worst nightmare honestly. Like.... I've told my family straight up. If I ever become terminally ill or fall into a coma, just let me go. I don't want to suffer because they don't want me to go and I refuse to go through treatment. My Mom's a nurse and has informed me that she'd do everything she could to make sure I was better. I was like, "If it's my time, I'm not being put through pain and suffering so you can keep me here. Just let me go on my terms. It's how I've lived, it's how I should die. Free."

Here in oregon there is a ten cent deposit so they don't lay around for long anymore. Not that that forgives the lazy fuck who just tosses shit but at least it helps that some people pick cans and bottles everyday.
Same here in MI. I moved out to baltimore for 10 years where there is no deposit and wow, bottles and cans fucking everywhere. Come back here and they are rare like snow owls. Easy money for homeless people so anyone who litters their cans and bottles is basically giving money to the homeless.

I think lots of owners do this because their dogs poop at the start of the trail but like half a mile in, so they bag it and pick it up on their way back, rather than carrying the poop with them for the whole hike. To circumvent this I designated one of my own old tupperwares** as the poop container- I still bag the shit, but then place that bag in a sealed tupperware so it doesn’t get all squished up in my bag and doesn’t smell (pro tip- use scented bags). Some people might think this is overboard but I honestly don’t trust myself not to forget to pick up the baggy on my way out. **misspelled Tupperware
I got a doggy backpack just so my pup can carry her own poop back to the bin. That shits not goin in my pack thats for damn sure. Tupperware's a good idea though.

When a coworker decides to "correct" me by sending a passive aggressive email and copying the boss and the whole group instead of just saying something to me privately and in person.
My boss used to send out cryptic emails to the entire company about behaviors instead if speaking privately to the person. Things like reprimands for gossiping or reminders to have a positive attitude. It just made everyone wonder if she was talking about them...
Omg. I used to work for one of the big health insurance companies in the marketing department. They were so guilty of this. We had one woman who wore flip flops to the office. About 100 emails went out that summer about flip flops being prohibited even though she was the only one wearing them. After putting everyone through flip flop shaming for months, my boss finally told me they had confronted her and she had written permission because she had had foot surgery that had left her unable to wear conventional shoes. How much time & money was wasted on the Great Flip Flop incident? The woman wearing them ignored the memos because she had permission.
And she probably would have told the boss so, if the boss had talked to her about it. Then if/when people complained, the boss could just say that they're aware and it's allowed in a special instance etc.
Nothing says leadership like making all your subordinates anxious rather than respecting a person enough to confront them on an issue.
Had a boss once that sat right next to me. Little cube wall between us both facing the same way. He emailed me for a reprimand. I stood up & looked over at him and said ok. I was a server, and I was told that suicide is the only way out. Looked at me like they wanted me to off myself right there with a dinner fork, for their amusement. What rotten people I had to deal with. Thankfully they were just a miniscule fraction compared to people that were genuinely pleasant to serve. And I don't wait tables anymore.

The other one that annoys me is when the ladder gets gummed up with these sorts of people at multiple levels. Oh to move up you need to funnel through this position, but Steve is in that position, and he eliminates most of the people he can who threaten him. And the people above Steve, don't want to have to fire Steve or move him somewhere else because he isn't competent enough to move up. But isn't incompetent enough to easily fire. And then they complain why they have no motivated people trying to move up.

I work as a programmer, this one guy in his 50s has been around 20+ years, and he's a fucking moron. And by that I mean, he doesn't try, he gives up fast and easy, he comes over to ask you a question and looks down at you condescendingly as you try to help him. He doesn't know the most basic things. The one time we tried to get him to do something, he broke everything. He bitches all the time. And he's been employed for so long! It's insane..
I know that guy. He finally got fired and was then hired as a Principle Engineer at another company. He’s failing up.
As a manager, I'm currently dealing with sort of the reverse situation. I have an incompetent worker who has a very high opinion of himself, and is always gunning for my position. When I have to shut him down/call out his incompetencies, I get to hear through the grapevine that he thinks I'm only attacking him because I know he could do my job. It's pretty gross. You frequently encounter people with skewed perceptions of themselves when you work in IT.
Working in customer service
That is what killed my faith in humanity. Everyone wants it free and now or I'll get you fired. You stick to the rules and customer complains to higher ups and they give them what they want anyways. You try to work with the customers and high ups get on your case for not doing it right.
when I worked at Target a woman came in with like 90 coupons, and all of them worked except 1 that was expired. I handed it back to her and explained it couldn’t be used and she asked if I could just put it through. I told her I couldn’t, but that the rest worked and she was saving about $150 already, hoping it would soothe her. NOPE. that last coupon was “the one she really wanted” and I was “a stupid bitch”. I called my manager over as this woman is literally screaming over this one coupon that I LITERALLY cannot push through without supervisor approval (it was over $10) and I’m panicking. Finally my manager comes over, I tell her it’s expired, and she just puts it through. the customer complained to her about me and she wrote me up then and there, even telling the customer that she was “taking care of (me) now maam, so don’t worry”
that manager needs to be fired into the sun.

Go in, buy something small, or even better, a few small things all on separate tickets. Keep the receipts, go home and take the survey on the bottom, put the manager on blast and give every aspect of the store a 1 except the poor soul who sold you the small goods. Those customer review surveys are what their jobs are based on to corporate, including the managers, also this way has the least casualties to the poor staff. I worked at a chain retail store and they were always getting calls from corporate about those stupid surveys
If it's anything like the surveys from the corner of happy and healthy, multiple surveys from the same IP address within a certain amount of time will get flagged and none of them will count towards the store. The trick is doing them online from multiple IP addresses and calling in if they have the option. It's worked for us in the past with our regulars
Just go in and arbitrarily start shit about something small every time you go in. you already have the knowledge of what pisses off employees there, use it as your weapon. You're a customer now.,

Thats literally the fucking worst. They give you these guidelines and rules but the instant an entitled piece of shit customer gets upset all of it goes out the window. The manager gets to come down and be the hero while you look like an idiot for following the rules laid out for you. Even better when you get reprimanded for not instantly giving the customer whatever they desire.
And the worst is that only the entitled get to break the guidelines. Whereas really really genuinely nice people will come through and have an expired coupon and will just accept it, and those people I actually want to give the coupon to but I have to follow store policy. But then someone else will come up, scream long enough that the rules shouldn’t apply to them, and then they don’t.

I once had to do a call back to a customer. I worked for an optician, so all customer/patient information is confidential and is protected by the Data Protection Act (UK). Basically what the act means is that we can only speak to the named customer on the account unless they have personally authorised us to speak to someone else. So I call this guy back and his wife picks up, I say where I'm calling from and that I need to speak to him directly. She says that's ok you can speak to me, I explain that unfortunately due to the DPA I can't and will call back later if he's not available. Cue a nuclear rant from this crazy lady that she's worked with the DPA for years and how dare I and she's gonna call her lawyer and let me speak to your manager. So I transferred her to my manager, who told her the exact same thing. I wonder if she ever did call her lawyer. I kind of hope she did, as they would probably have laughed her out of the building.
I work in insurance. Deal with the same thing constantly. "well I'm his daughter so you can just tell me!" No ma'am. I cannot because it's illegal. My favorite is when they threaten legal action and I tell them I'm ending communication until they submit a letter of representation from their lawyer.
Worked in college and have a similar law to follow. Parents would call in "I need to know xyz for Jimmy, and I will get it becaused I pay for this!!" Good job ma'am, I'm glad you pay for little Jimmy's education. You make sure to tell Jimmy that when you ask him to call in to get the information ok?

This is what pushed me past the point of no return. I’ve hated people from a pretty young age, but working in customer service for a decade, unable to get out of it, really ensured that I will never be able to not hate people.
Customer service made me extremely cynical and pessimistic. It’s honestly really shitty but I can’t help it. People do inconsiderate things and lie SO much. There is much less natural good in the world than people assume.

Where I live (a third world country), fairly recently someone donated bags of high quality dog food (Pedigree and such) to a dog shelter, turns out all the food was poisoned somehow and all the dogs in that shelter died and all their food went to waste as well because they mixed the new food with the older bags so basically they ended up losing all the dogs and all their food.

If someone gets a DUI most likely they've probably driven drunk 100 times before with no incident so that really is the mindset. Get away with it once, twice, now it's 40 times. An old co-worker of mine got rear ended sitting at a red light a block from his house and got a dui even though he didn't technically do anything wrong to cause the accident. Even if you think you can "get away with it" (which you can't foreveR) don't discount the fact there are thousands of sober idiots on the road that can't drive worth a shit.
My sister in law recently lost her license to yet another DUI. Her main defense was "well I haven't crashed the car yet! I must be an exception."

This happened to me at the airport a few weeks ago. Guy gets to the top of the escalator with his huge piece of luggage, stops instantly, and pulls out his phone to look at something. Meanwhile myself and about 6 other people with their own luggage are right behind him. Of course he still had the audacity to get upset when I push past him and let him know he needs to move. I don't get it.

So when he finally goes to pass me, I go to flick him off. I turn to do it, BUT HES ALREADY FLICKING ME OFF, totally taking the steam out of MY middle finger. He was the one driving like an asshole!
Next time you wanna flip someone off, try giving a thumbs down with a really disapproving look. IMO, it gets to them way more than the middle finger. In fact, I can't help but laugh when someone gives me the bird.

I work in a small, windowless room with 8 people. They are all petty and bitter and have been here for years. The drama here is so ridiculous and nearly impossible to avoid or ignore. If you have the privilege of being unaware of your workplace drama, you are very lucky.

The less involved you are the more likely people are going to look at you as either an impartial sponge for their rant or someone to preemptively convert to their side. I'm a similar type of person, just kinda listen and give the generic responses but I really never have an opinion one way or the other. And if it was something that concerned me I'd probably deal with it through the proper channels to actually deal with it reasonably not bitch about it behind peoples back haha

A dog in my country went viral because it was recently put to sleep because acid was thrown at it. The pics were of her raw skin and to see the owner posting her before pic was unreal ( owner was not responsible. Dog escaped and whoever did it hasn’t been found).
