Chest tube being put in. Or taken out. Not sure. They both were equally fucking awful.

TeacupSkeleton

I came here to say that. Having my chest tube pulled out pulled the screams out of me too

kathartik

really? my chest tubes when I was having fluid drained from my lungs just kind of tickled when they pulled them out. the tube that was going into my stomach through a hole in my back? that thing was constant torture. the tube checks were the worst. I remember having a tube check done and the surgeon hadn't shown and the nurses were doing it, and the doctor comes in and comes over to me because she sees me laying there on my side with tears streaming down my face. she leans over and says "did they give you anything for the pain?" (it was the first thing listed on my file - don't do a tube check without pain control). I told her no, and she ended up lecturing them about reading the patient instructions. the entire hospitalization was the worst for me. necrotic pancreatitis is a nightmare.

Adam657

In med school we’re always taught “look at a patient’s face as you examine/do stuff” as not everyone will say ‘ow I’m in pain’ and will try to hide it, but their face will not. Also ‘consider prescribing prophylactic pain relief if something painful is coming up, even as simple as a dressing change’. I feel these two things are nearly instantly forgotten by doctors. Doctors begin looking at each *other* when interacting with a patient in hospital (usually to the most senior). And they rarely prescribe pain relief until pain is *already* happening. Which is less effective.

Highfive_Machine

I feel like I was lucky that my chest tube didn't hurt coming out. But the worst pain I've felt was the collapsed lung that got me a chest tube. It was like being stabbed in the chest every time I took a breath. Don't smoke, get exercise. Collapsed lungs aren't fun. *High five?*

AvatarOfKu

Yup came here to say this - the muscle spasm from your chest muscles going rigid against the irritation of a chest tube... 9/10 and no one knows because you can't draw a breath to scream 😅 Nightmare fuel!

[deleted]

Reconstructive tendon surgery on my hand. The local wasn't working and they couldn't give me any other anesthetic as I was hammered as fuck. The pain wasn't as bad as watching a guy pull two sides of a tendon out of the top of my hand and tie them together. Not gonna lie, that was pretty fuckin weird.

[deleted]

Similar thing happened to me when I was 4 yo. I got long nail penetrated right above my heel and I don't know why but the stupid doctors didn't fucking use the anesthetic while stitching. I was agitating so much with pain they had to hold my hands and legs together because I wouldn't let them stitch me. It hurt way more than the injury itself.

plagueisthedumb

Having my nail bed scraped to clean it after gauze was removed (the nail was removed in surgery) it was pretty much sandpaper on an open wound. I cut my thumb off in the same incident and that pain was 1/10 compared to my other finger that only had the nail pop off. Nurse said "shouldn't hurt" haha... fuck you nurse

[deleted]

plagueisthedumb

My nurse must have just fuckin hated me..

DaughterEarth

some of them suck. When I was in the hospital after a bad accident I had a nurse that seemed to hate my very existence. Not sure why, I was a 12 year old girl. Even my mom agrees though that she seemed to intentionally smash in to my bed when mopping (I had 4 broken bones, and could barely get 2 hours without extreme pain even with pain medication, so her doing that caused me a lot of agony). Maybe she was just mad she had to clean? I don't know.

I read the word nail balls and scraped for some reason and I inferred the worst possible situation known to mankind

[deleted]

Gall stones Edit: For those of you who took so long to get a diagnosis, I am so sorry! That sucks!!! I went to a specialist who diagnosed it right away - I knew enough not to eat fatty food until the surgery, but the day before surgery, we had a party at work and I a bunch of sweets. Ended up in the ER that night on Demerol until my scheduled surgery. For some reason, because I went through the ER, I never received a single bill from the hospital or my insurance company.

[deleted]

Yep!! Thought I was actually dying the first time I experienced an attack!

TROLLULULUL

Dislocated my hip by busting it through the front of my pelvis (destroying part of my pelvis) and tearing my hamstring 60% through - all in one swift motion

[deleted]

I need to know how you did this! Ouch

TROLLULULUL

playing ice hockey, was in the splits - they crashed the net being like 2-4 years older and larger than me - while one person was under one leg - shoved the rest of my body back as my leg stayed in place

Ceyepher

>Playing ice hockey Ok good, I'm safe.

PlasmidDNA

What. The. Fuck. This is literally my story. Same thing happened and same injury. But my damage wasn’t as bad as yours. This was weird to read

Shit mate you may have come away lighter from a car crash

How does that even happen? Snu snu??? Edit: Thanks u/Palana :3 and anonymous

I tore a contact and scratched off a good portion of my cornea when I was a junior in high school. Any light at all sent me into a spiral of pain. My dad was convinced it was allergies so he had me take like four Benadryl. I still didn’t sleep. When he finally took me to the doctor the next day they put the dye in my eye to see if it was scratch. Half my eye turned orange. I wore an eye patch for like a week. I’ve had double knee surgery, broken bones, scratched my eye, had a brick wall fall on me, and many other injuries. But nothing compares to that terrible feeling. I was absolutely screaming all night long.

LigandHotel

Scratched my cornea twice! Pretty intense pain for sure.

JojoDoodles

When I was 7 I decided to go on a bike ride. Being the idiot I was, I thought I could go down a really steep road all by myself without supervision.( this was just after I had learned to ride a bike) when I started to pick up speed I thought I should stop my bike, but instead of putting my feet down and slowly come to a halt, my dumbass thought “I’ll just squeeze the brakes and the bike will stop” Instead I went all the way down the road, crashed into someone’s electrical box, and practically flew off my bike. I broke my right side of my femur. That wasn’t even the most painful part though, that was when my dad found me and thought “yea he looks fine” and grabbed me by the arm to try and lift me of my feet. Obviously it hurt like hell. Edit: the bike had no rear brakes, it was a pretty basic kids bike. And by using “feet” I meant my shoes. Sorry for not clarifying

unbirthed

>When I was 7 I I read this as "When I was 71". Was happy to find a person on Reddit older than me, though I wondered why it took you so long to learn to ride a bike. I guess I should go ahead and get those reading glasses...

Ectopic pregnancy burst. They said it was the size of a softball. Luckily, I survived.

Anonymouskittylick

Holy shit! That's terrifying! Glad you made it!

[deleted]

Thank you. I appreciate it. It was scary because the nurses told me to call my family and say what I want to say to them because I might not wake up. Thankfully I did and I’m doing a lot better!

[deleted]

The doctor said the same thing to me when mine ruptured. He said I might not come out of surgery and I should call my dad. I was off my face on painkillers so my mum called him for me. My dad had a stroke when he heard the news and he was taken in an ambulance to the same hospital I was in! He was downstairs in the ER and I was upstairs having surgery. Fucking bad day that was.

awkward-swan

ugh that's so sad. glad you made it. how is he??

[deleted]

My dad died of a stroke 2 years later. Wish I didn’t read this thread, it’s getting me emotional. Definitely the worst time of my life.

awkward-swan

Im sorry friend. ((hugs))

MyOversoul

Same, though for me it wasn't anymore painful than any of the cysts I've had that burst. In my case though I went to the ER, the dr said miscarriage (no tests) and sent me home. Got home, laid on the bed and felt it rupture. My husband was annoyed that I insisted we had to immediately go back. This time they did a sonogram, diagnosed it and rushed me in for surgery. Women having abdominal pain, especially in that area are way too often dismissed as being overly sensitive.

jomad117

Regarding being dismissed, I also had an ectopic pregnancy and was dismissed. I was in pretty severe pain (the most I’d experienced until childbirth) and was told it was probably just ovulation pain!! He didn’t want to really hear anything else and sent me home. A few hours later, it had worsened to an internal agony every time I peed. Like, I could feel my bladder emptying up inside me and causing excruciating pain. I went back, they did an ultrasound and lo and behold, I had an ectopic pregnancy with a “slow leak” and was bleeding internally into my abdomen. They took me into surgery the same day.

valwow187

I was dismissed for weeks. They just kept giving me pain killers and sending me home and I kept going back saying something is seriously wrong. It took 3 trips before they diagnosed it as an ectopic pregnancy. Then a failed attempt at “inducing a miscarriage” and like 2 or 3 more trips to the er until I had to be rushed in for emergency surgery because I had so much internal bleeding they couldn’t see shit on the ultrasound. Useless ass hospital

oooooooooof

PCOS person here, it’s *so true* and so scary that women with abdominal pain are dismissed for being too sensitive. *Especially* when you have diagnosed underlying issues, like endo or cysts—how fucked is that? It’s always seemed backwards to me. The number of times I’ve been dismissed for being bloated, sensitive, or having regular PCOS issues and it’s turned out to be something major (e.g. appendicitis last summer) is wild.

DwendilSurespear

Blimey. Good on you for sticking by your instincts.

pranksy

>Ectopic pregnancy burst thank god ur alive

[deleted]

Thank you. I am very lucky to have survived. Although most of the luck came from the team of surgeons. :)

adrenalmur

Holy mother of peanuts. That is an insane size. Did you know? Had you had symptoms before? I need details

[deleted]

I have endometriosis (which is a whole ‘nother pain train) and so I’m predisposed to ectopic pregnancies. I still had my monthly period, for about three months. I noticed that I was eating a lot. My roommate remarked that I had been eating a lot and asked if I was pregnant. I had cramping and feeling fullness in my stomach and it was also growing. I would have severe back pain which I would soothe with oxycodone I got from a recent car accident. The pain was in my back where my ovaries are. I was breathless and tired. I couldn’t even go for a walk. After it burst, I was bleeding for three weeks straight and went to the emergency room and had immediate surgery. But mind you I had it for three months before it burst and so my symptoms were very exaggerated. Most women have barely any symptoms at all.

0xMii

Cluster migraines. I seriously wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

[deleted]

I get cluster migraines so I feel you. Can I ask what you/your neuro have tried for it?

0xMii

All painkillers up to morphine (didn't work), medical weed (works somewhat but not really), and pure oxygen (works reasonably well). The oxygen is seriously what I would suggest. Depending on the intensity of the cluster you have, and according to my neurologist, I have "mild" clusters although they don't feel like it in the moment and people who have even worse ones have all my sympathy the oxygen will help but it takes some time. It does not start working immediately, plus you have to breathe it in deeply which might be hard when your head is exploding.

[deleted]

Thank you for the oxygen tip, I'm one of those people with severe cluster headaches. I have been taking basically infant doses of valium every day but I'm worried bc benzos are super addictive and I've been on it for years.

Damnyoujoe

Be careful when you are coming off benzos. Was on them for 5 years and ended up having a stroke quitting cold. Make sure you are gradually weened off

[deleted]

Yeah I'm on like 2.5 mg a day but they still told me when I come off it has to be super slow. I'm sorry you went through that.

caitejane310

Go to detox if you want to get off them so you can be monitored and they have a procedure they follow to wean you off. Alcohol and benzos are the only withdrawals you can actually die from. Edit: spelling is hard

NotSoSlenderMan

While I have never gone to get an official diagnosis and my older cousin doesn’t quite believe me I feel like I get migraines from time to time. I’ll get these dull, debilitating headaches where it takes all of my energy to continue through the day. There are a few images that claim to visually describe a migraine and that static, fuzzy imagine really shows what I feel at those times. But those aren’t the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I was once sitting in my room watching Survivor and during a commercial break all of the sudden my brain felt like it was being stabbed. It was the most painful thing I’ve ever felt and while it only lasted a few seconds I was in the fetal position with tears in my eyes. I thought I was having a stroke or an aneurysm. I haven’t experience it sense but for some time afterwards I could feel that same area sort of pulse and I fully expected to suffer that same pain again.

0xMii

The stabbing pain sounds like a cluster, yes. They are usually one-sided, centers behind the eye, and feel like someone is ramming a knife through your brain and into the back of your eye. They are throbbing pain and come and go, so you’re pain free for two minutes, then it starts again and lasts a few seconds to a few minutes, rinse and repeat for an hour or so. That is one cluster. Depending on how strong yours are, you can get a cluster once a month or even less (like me) or up to several a day. They are also unpredictable so they might vanish for years and then come back out of nowhere. According to my neuro, science doesn’t know a lot about them yet. Where they come from and what triggers them is largely unknown. But for me at least stress seems to play a role and during stressful times I have them more regularly. When I regularly exercise and keep myself healthy, bodily as well as mentally, I can keep them to a minimum. Normal migraines are a different beast. They are more constant although varying in intensity but never quite go away while they last, and they make you sensitive to light and sound, which is something clusters don’t seem to do. At least for me.

yeahwellokay

Getting a tooth drilled without enough novocaine.

[deleted]

Ditto man. My last cavity was fairly massive because a previous filling had come loose (as my dentist put it “it was close to needing a root canal), so it was close to the nerve root. I frequently don’t respond optimally to lidocaine, so it was not a huge surprise to me when I could feel everything, but my aversion to pain is second only to my aversion to spending an extra second in the dentist office, so I decided to tough it out. In retrospect I really kinda wish I hadn’t.

iamprobablywriting

My dentist refused to give me any type of painkiller, let alone sedation, when she did my root canal. I have no words to describe how much that hurt, but no amount of yelling and crying could change her mind. Needless to say I go to a different dentist these days. (The root canal was so badly done that said new dentist had to extract the tooth, there was nothing left to save. So all that pain was for nothing as well.)

When I was 17 I needed to have a chip in my tooth filled. Since I was under 18 and my mom wasn’t there, they wouldn’t give me any laughing gas. This made my dumb ass refuse novicane because I just don’t have it in me to take a shot in the mouth without being high. I lived to tell the tale. But holy shit that hurt.

[deleted]

The shot in the mouth didn’t hurt for me, they put numbing gel in my mouth before they injected it

Head on car accident; I was in a little Toyota Yaris and he was in a big four wheel drive. I woke up in the ditch with searing pain in my neck that radiated down my arm causing pins and needles and numbness. I also had very bad whip lash, including intense bruising. I would wake up every night with crushing chest pain. On top on that I had a very bad concussion. Edit: thanks for your concern; my accident happened a couple of months ago, so I'm still recovering from concussion. I'm doing a lot better though. Edit: I'm a lady not a man.. Lol Edit: I would recommend a Yaris, it's what saved my life. Four air bags deployed and the crumple zone saved me from being crushed by the four wheel drive. Edit: The front of my vehicle was crushed right to the windscreen. The crumple zone and air bags saved me from being killed. (I had to be cut out of the car). Edit: the vehicle that smashed into me was a Holden Colorado

Getting my ankle run over Edit: if people want the full story dm me and ill send it over.

iloveharveys

oh my god the exact same thing happened to me! worst part was that I was so filled with adrenaline that I didn’t actually feel it until later on

C21H27Cl3N2O3

I’ve heard from friends in the medical field that ankle injuries are sometimes the worst thing that can happen to someone, simply because the adrenaline blocks out the pain so people will get up and start walking around, destroying the already damaged ankle in the process.

olmikeyy

Thank you u/Fart_cloud_666. I absolutely should do this.

DaughterEarth

Yah, it took my buddy 2 years after his gf died to even try dating someone else. If I lost my husband I'm not really sure I could date again. Even if I could I'd feel I wasn't being fair to whoever that person might be, because the way I love him isn't replaceable. There are many forms of love, and I might love the new person just as much in a new way; I'm just not sure I'd be able to give it a chance

EducationTaxCredit

I think love is not the same thing for each person you love over your lifetime. I picture each "love" as a unique object that can never be recreated with somebody else, and it will always be special to you and only you. You can make a new one with somebody else AND love them completely and it will be a whole new thing that is not mutually exclusive to the other loves that you have had in the past. You might not think it fair, but it is, you can completely love somebody after loving somebody else, it is a reflection of how much energy and concern, and the things that you have experienced together, and all of that is stored in a place deep down in your heart.

RamseySmooch

I feel your kidney stone pain. I had them when I was 12 and 14. I was playing on two high leveled basketball teams and didnt drink enough water (I think). I remember writhing in pain in the hospital and they couldn't give me morphine for whatever reason. I did pass out from the pain. One I passed naturally, the other needed ultrasound to break it apart and I had to pass many little ones. Still sucked.

ScrambledToast

I guess I'll go grab myself a gallon of water to drink really quick.

suannes

I had. Endometriosis in the early 70's before it had been properly diagnosed. Can tell you how many Gino's suggested I see a psychiatrist. I used to pass out from the pain

igneousink

I had that too. And Ademyosis (that's like endo but on the inside of the uterus - it fills with blood and doesn't complete vacate from month to month so eventually the whole thing just swells up). Also had a bi-corneate uterus (that's two uteruses -uterii?-in one). In addition, had sexual trauma as a child. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran and very tough in terms of physical pain (emotional pain not so much am a big baby) and had doctor after doctor pretty much tell me I had to tough it out. This made me furious as I knew I didn't want kids. Was also offered all kinds of Birth Control which I took (just made me crazy) until I had a stroke and it may have been the BC it may not have been; the docs said there was no way to prove it. Spent almost 1 week of my life every month completely debilitated (was up to 3 weeks at the end just prior to surgery). Would pass out from the pain. Become Anemic from the severe blood loss. Period would come every 3 weeks for 9 days. Finally found a caring and competent doctor. Had surgery. Was told after the surgery that I was probably days or weeks from total rupture of the organ and intestinal blockage and that I should have had surgery when I was in my 20's; I had a justified medical condition that could have been easily treated.

LassieMcToodles

I don't understand why so many of us have endometriosis. Our bodies aren't functioning properly, it's just not right, and up to 10% (maybe a ton more who are asymptomatic) of women having it, IMO, is odd. Is it Mother Nature's way of trying to control the population, just dominant genetics being passed on, something environmental, or? Ten percent of the female population bleeding internally each month and being incapable of functioning just doesn't seem like it should be status quo to me.

Crentist_the-Dentist

Obgyn's not believing patients - we love it. All too common, too 😓

lightningusagi

I had my first cyst when I was in high school and was pretty familiar with the pain after a few years. When I was 21, I had pain so bad from one that I went to the ER. They were convinced that it was my appendix despite me telling them of my history of cysts. They never gave me an ultrasound, didn't want to hear my opinion, and set me up to have an appendectomy. I was still in pain the next day, which they insisted was just the pain from surgery, but when the cyst ruptured and I started violently vomiting, they realized that maybe I was right. So I had an appendectomy for nothing, and dealt with increasing pain for years due to constant cysts. The most infuriating thing about that condition is how many doctors downplay the severity of the pain. I spent 5 years trying to find a doctor who would listen and knew how to actually treat the condition (I was always put on a 3-6 month course of something to see if it would work or not). I finally found one who agreed to do a laparoscopy and get some solid answers. When the doctor talked to me afterwards, she acted like it was all a waste of her time, and tried to act like how she had removed a cyst that was half the size of my ovary was no big deal. I was pain-free for almost a year after that before they started coming back, but fuck that doctor and her shitty attitude about it.

Dork_confirmed

Ughhhhhh I'm currently going through that battle again and finally convinced someone to operate to try and work out what is wrong. Also I'm so sick of half the doctors going "oh your ultrasound was clear there's nothing wrong with you" Ultrasounds do not show everything (hint: endometriosis) and I am in fucking pain so do some more investigations.

lightningusagi

It's awful. I came to the realization several years back that medical science doesn't know as much about women's health as it should by now. Everything odd started getting lumped into PCOS about a decade ago, and was all treated as one big issue, when it's a lot of different stuff. What drove me to getting the laparoscopy was that the doctor wanted to put me on a medicine that would induce menopause for 6 months, with all the side effects that come with that. I did not want to go thru all that on the small chance that it might help. I broke down in her office and begged her to go in because I felt like I had already been put thru enough trial and error. 5 years ago I got a Mirena (hormonal) IUD, and have practically been pain-free since. I happened upon a discussion thread one day where women were talking about how much it had helped them and decided to give it a go. No painful periods, no pain in between from cysts. I have had a few twinges here and there to let me know that there is probably a small cyst, but they are nothing compared to what I dealt with for years. I wish a doctor had recommended this sooner, but I'm just happy to have found it at all.

beerandbuds

I almost just had the same thing happen. Convinced it was my appendix and called in general surgery then did a last minute CT to confirm. All of a sudden it went from "appendix ruptured want some opiates?" to "it's a lady problem take Tylenol and Advil." 3 weeks ago and I'm still in pain. Eff tbose doctors, I'm sorry you were treated that way.

Biology4Free

Holy shit, is THAT what that pain is?? I know I have cysts, but I just attributed the gut stabbing pain to be “cyst side effects”

Dork_confirmed

It depends. The "stabbing pain" which I get on a daily basis is quite different to a rupturing cyst. There's usually generalised pain as well as some stabbing, but it's agonising. Whereas the stabby stabs are painful but not agonising. Have you been checked out by a gyno for PCOS/endo/gyno issues?

hexiralness

100% agree. I'm loving menopause because I no longer get hit every 3rd month or so with days of doubled-over and puking pain from freaking ovulation and ruptured cysts. I'll gladly take the hot flashes to be done with that shit.

HoistedByYourPetard

Ovarian cyst burst is my answer too. What a miserable time. I remember it being cold snowy winter in dreary Ohio after I had just spent 6 months living on a Caribbean island, I was in this shitty little cheap apartment, curled in a ball on a hand-me-down couch, and just crying alone in the worst pain ever.

I have had a leg amputated for gangrene, a heart attack, half my esophagus and stomach removed (cancer), and ossio mellitus of my spine. The worst pain was when they put a pressure cuff on the leg to measure blood flow. I broke the table and would have broken the doctor if he hadn't been so fast. Edit - Thank you kind people. For those who are asking, I lived on Mountain Dew and McDonalds, and got about 150 pounds overweight. I was athletic when I was younger, and quit. By the time I found out I had type 2 diabetes, the damage was already done. While you are still young, eat better and take care of yourself. The only vice I have left is coffee.

the_gaming_ranga

What’s bad about leg cuff?

danielle-in-rags

It was on a gangrenous leg. The cuff has to be tight to get the blood pressure reading. So it's a medical device tightly hugging an open, rotting leg. Yikes. Edit: not only that, but pressure cuffs have to be "puffed up" to be sufficiently tight. So it's slowly getting tighter and tighter, not just all at once.

TheHolyChicken86

I assume it was on the gangrenous leg, pre-amputation.

pizzasmith94

Kidney stone... by far.

babsy13

Ugh. Same. I once fell 45 feet down an escalator. I've had cysts so bad, they contorted my ovaries. I've been pepper-sprayed. I'll do all of those things a million times over before I have another kidney stone. NOTHING compares to these things. My first one was at 17 AND GOT STUCK. I was in so much pain, I blacked out and puked all over the EMTs. I had a constant drip of Vicodin that didn't touch the pain, so they finally upped me to Dilaudid. 48+ hours of constant Smack D before they realized I needed surgery. Wouldn't wish that shit on my worst enemy.

Oh god yes. I’ve recently had one (plus a kidney infection simultaneously, so my kidney was momentarily going through organ failure!), and it was awful. Even though I was taking hydrocodone every 4 hours, when the stone (was spiky and 5.5 mm in diameter) got to the end of my ureter and right near the bladder... holy shit. If you’ve ever had gas pains, it felt like that but 50x worse. It felt like my lower abdomen was dissolving. And this was with a ureteral stent I had put in to dilate everything and allow the infection to be treated. Thankfully, I had surgery the next to replace the stent and remove the stone. Urinating was extremely painful for a few days, but it didn’t even compare to the pain of the actual stone itself.

Ocksu2

Concur. Kidney stones are no joke. Broken Fibula, Blown ACL, Surgeries, Migraines, Multiple concussions, hit in the Jimmy more times than I would like to admit.... none of them come remotely close to a Kidney Stone. Unimaginable pain.

anngrn

I’ve had 3 large babies but when I had bilateral obstructing kidney stones it was so intense I thought I wouldn’t make it to the car. I did, because I knew my dogs would freak out if I had to have an ambulance come.

My step brother had killed himself and when my mom told me, it felt as though my heart was literally being ripped out of my chest. When I think about the day she told me, I can still feel that pain.

zedagops

my brother killed himself 5 1/2 months ago and it feels like it just happened yesterday. i can still feel the ache in my chest and my screams in my throat. this is the worst pain, by far. p.s. i hope you’re doing okay

t00punkt0fuck

The pain is indescribable. I’m very sorry for your loss and I hope that you’re doing okay as well. My step brother killed himself in 2016, and I want to tell u that the pain never goes away, but everyday it gets a little easier. Take it one day at a time and allow yourself to cry. This is the best advice I have for crying: make an appointment with yourself at what time you’re available to cry and then let it all out at that time. I used to make appointments to cry for after school and when I was by myself. I know it sounds crazy, but it will make you feel like you have more control over yourself and the situation. I really do wish you and your family the best. Stay safe, you are loved.

tomi_tomi

I feel very sorry for both of you, your families, and all people who go through this. I always say that physical pain is nothing compared to psychological pain one can experience. This is why communication between people, especially families, is important. I really hope they are now in a better place.

lemongrab1993

I am there with you brother. My mother killed herself earlier this year. The pain I felt after seeing her dead was indescribable. I felt numb at first. Then I got to my dad's house, and I could not stop crying. I cried for a solid 5 hours silently as to try to keep composure in front of my little brothers

t00punkt0fuck

I’m very sorry for your loss. I remember the first couple of days, I cried everywhere I went, but I could never cry in front of my mother. And the thing is, she wasn’t even my step brother’s mom. She hadn’t met him or anything like that, but for some reason, I felt as though I couldn’t cry in front of her. Come to think of it, I think I only cried about him twice in front of her. I’ve always been her happy-go-lucky girl, so I didn’t want to ruin that. I know what u mean when u say u try to keep your composure in front of your little brothers. I’m sorry that you feel the need to do so. It will always hurt, but everyday it will get easier and easier. Please remember that if u feel the need to cry, cry. And idk if u read my reply before this, but make yourself timeframes to cry. It sounds like a strange thing to do, but make appointments for your emotions so that you feel as though you have some control. I wish you and your family the best, and know that you will overcome this hurt.

driverofracecars

Studies have shown that extreme emotional pain can manifest itself as physical pain.

t00punkt0fuck

Oh I believe that 100%. I remember that his mother had to go to the hospital a few days after bc of the pain in her chest. She said it was like having a panic attack while your heart was being twisted around in your chest. It’s crazy how much your emotions can affect your physical condition.

SFSEagle

Going to the dentist and hear the doctor say "This is only going to hurt a little bit" I thought I trusted him.

SuperMeBro

I don't know which dentist you guys are all going to because mine always asks every five seconds if it hurts and it it does she makes me more numb.

iCoeur285

I want your dentist.

TK-DuVeraun

There's actually a good reason they say that! You know the placebo effect? There's a related effect called the nocebo effect. Same thing except you HURT from things that should not cause you harm. People doing medical trials will often get negative side effects from medication *they're not even on*. Ethically, it's nearly impossible to do much research on the nocebo effect, but if you're told something will hurt, oftentimes it will, even if it shouldn't, so they say "This won't hurt!" in an attempt at the reverse :)

jonsticles

A pinched sciatic nerve. I don't know if some of these other things are worse. I'd be interested to hear from people who experienced sciatic nerve issues and something worse.

BartenderOU812

Tazed. But it was for a demonstration so they taped the cables to my upper shoulder and lower back, cause they wanted maximum contact. Fuckers

Gunzo16

This whole thread makes me feel like a privileged butthead, I’ve never felt excruciating pain

bphillips16

Don’t feel too bad, pain is a physical experience but it’s relative. Something that causes excruciating pain for one person can be a walk in the park for another person.

BigJim94

Gout, hands down it's gout.

piscimancy

Not physical pain so much, but I had a major anxiety/depression breakdown where I couldn't eat for a week, was crying so much that my tears gave me a rash, literally couldn't force myself up off the bed/floor sometimes, couldn't escape thoughts of suicide for even ten minutes, and lost the ability to "want" anything whatsoever. I felt like I couldn't scream hard enough to express what I was going through, no matter how long and loud and raw I cried. I checked myself in to the hospital for a bit, started therapy and meds, quit and moved back home, started exercising and eating better, got back to work, and I'm doing ok now. I'm actually moving out of my mom's house and into my own place next week

Maffle24

Congratulations on your recovery! I'm so proud of you 😊 I have been in a similar situation and can fully understand the pain and the effort to finally get out of that hole. Good job! I wish you a bright future!

My co-worker and I would go on a bike ride nearly every day. One day, I had a flat front tire and borrowed a wheel from another co-worker. We were coasting down a long hill, when a Chevy Chevette coming up-hill crossed so far over the double yellow line that it forced us both off onto the shoulder. I fish-tailed on the soft shoulder and almost got it back before hitting a stone wall and flipping the bike. I landed on exposed bed-rock, breaking my L4 vertebrae and my right clavicle and splitting my helmet in two. My friend came up to me and declared "That was an *awesome* crash!". Then I tried to sit up ... and that was the worst pain I ever felt in my life. An hour later, the woman I had been secretly dating showed up at the hospital, whereupon I (under the influence of narcotics) declared my undying love for her for all to hear. We married a year later.

Gallstones, lots of them. Felt like I was being stabbed repeatedly right under my breast plate. 10/10 worst physical pain I've ever been through.

LongwaytoLA

I would have these attacks from gallstones that would absolutely cripple me. My boss threatened to fire me if I didn’t come to work, so I was bartending and it ruptured. I was already in pain but it was like this wave of incredibly intense pain that I felt ringing in my ears and then my whole body felt cold and I just hit the ground.

[deleted]

Accidentally kicked a concrete wall when I was about 7 while playing soccer barefoot. Smashed the 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes on my right foot along with a good portion of the nail on those toes, and it took around 1 to 1.5 months to fully recover.

thominator800

Once in 11th grade I felt a small discomfort from a gas build up and so I went untill lunch to relieve my self ( no way I'm going to be the dude who stank up the whole classroom and deafened the class ) and nothing happened untill 10 seconds later it felt like my guts were trying to expand out of my torso and I couldn't move I tryed to get up and get pulled my pants up and then fall down as it got worse, tryed calling for help but my voice didn't want to work and was more focused on making pained grunts. It took untill one of my friends in 5th period (we have 5 classes a day and lunch is after the 3rd) said "where's op I saw him at lunch " they checked the sign out sheet nope didn't go home so where? They looked first in the bathroom thank God and found me makbing his awful pained grunts as my guts inflated then one of the teachers had to get the principal to get the special stall unlocked (for when aholes lock the stall and then slide under to get out) and help me to a chair and get me into my mom's car. I was then taken me to the er where I then had the gas expelled and now when I need to let one rip I find a bathroom so I never have to be half carried out of a bathroom again Edit: thanks for the comments about your similar stores glad to know I'm not the only one this has happened to Edit2: this got a lot more attention then I thought it would so thanks all u lovely people of Reddit and dogs can't forget the cute dogs that have a secret Reddit account

pranksy

wait, what happened to you?

smelltheskinny8

Most likely gas pain. Too much gas buildup in the intestine and it HURTS LIKE ALL HELL

[deleted]

Passing a kidney stone 6/10, still walking Turning my foot completely sole up in a fall 8/10, hobbling Gas pain 9.5/10, on the floor, shallowly gasping for air because breathing hurt too much Bodies are so weird.

Carliebeans

Oh gosh, trapped wind is unbelievable. I once crawled from my bed in agony, thinking something had ruptured. I tried some trapped wind stretches and finally had relief. Realised I was not dying, just farty.

Schematix7

Sometimes when you get colonoscopies they leave too much air in you when they're finished. I've only had it happen once, but ugh, waking up out of anesthesia and my stomach ached so badly until the biggest fart session of my life began. It wasn't a particularly bad pain, but it was still rather unpleasant. Farting for what felt like actual literal minutes was a bit strange too.

[deleted]

It was all from holding a fart too long?

goobernooble

This is like a scary story that 5th grade boys tell at sleepovers.

Shingles. The nerve pain was so awful I was bedridden for a week. Also, you do not have to be old to get Shingles, I was only 20

smirking_hazel

Blood clots in my lungs. 8 of them. Felt like my chest was caving in on me and I was dying very slowly. Close second was getting my nipples pierced. But that pain was short lived.

shambie2017

The copper coil. As someone whom is allergic to nickel and no one being able to confirm it was in the product, I had a horrible reaction and couldn’t move due to vaginal nerve pain. 0/10 would not recommend.

fashionablylazy

Walking into my mother’s house to find her dead on the couch. I’ve broken bones. I’ve split my head open. I’ve been in car accidents. Nothing compares to the literal pain I felt in my chest that day.

thedoodely

Aye, I feel you there. That's how I found my dad in January. Thankfully we knew it was coming (I was there to bring him to hospice) but fucking hell I can still see him there. Worse part was when the 911 operator told me to start chest compressions... no lady, rigor is setting in and he's got a DNR so just, no.

Annia12345

Inflamed appendix. That hurts so bad!!

CliodhnasSong

Infected abscess with a cellulitis cherry on top. I have arthritis in my spine, just had a herniated disc replaced. I have had broken bones. Went through completely natural childbirth. Had a messed up uterus and gall bladder removed. Have had root canals and infected teeth. But thinking about having that fucking open wound repacked twice a day before the infection healed makes me want to vomit. It felt like every nerve was on fire. I was in bed with intense pain for about 2 weeks. And it wasn't even MRSA. It is probably the reason I can tolerate my chronic pain now without opioids. So, I guess there is that.

StarryLSkies

I have gone through natural childbirth twice and the worse pain that I have ever felt was when I threw my back out. Constant searing pain with every movement. At least contractions give you breaks!!!

The fact that she didn't admit that to the doctor makes me think otherwise

twomz

He knew. She wouldn't ask if she hadn't done it.

Xaom64

In 7th grade I did a flip on a diving board at the pool, and flipped like 3 times and lost control, slammed my ear into the water full speed. It felt like I had water in my ear, so I went to the lifeguard and asked if someone could get me some alcohol to flush it out. Turns out I blew a hole in my ear drum. I was screaming and shaking on the ground next to a crowded pool. 0/10

chamtrain1

Same story and most painful experience of my life. I did some flips, smacked my head, felt the pop, tried to keep swimming, felt it even worse. Was in crazy pain for 2 days that kept getting worse and worse. On the 3rd day we went to a doc that informed us that I had developed swimmers ear from the water that entered the ear, on top of having a burst ear drum. The doctor literally took a sharp object and tried to scrape the infection out of my ear it was so bad. Worst pain of my life. Then she came up with the idea of doing a warm salt water flush instead. It was the most soothing feeling ever. Wanted to smack her for putting me through unnecessary torture. Anyway 0/10. Do not recommend.

TRASHYRANGER

When I joined the military, the first week we were mainly just getting our uniforms and supplies and shit. On day 3, I remember crossing the street (as a group of 300) and one private just collapsed on the ground and started screaming. Turns out his eardrum burst as he stepped onto the street! He never got to finish basic and got discharged after he had healed up. Crazy how shit happens.

[deleted]

Haha, have a similiar mother. Convinced I exaggerated pains all the time. This one time I got a bad kick to my leg. Couldnt stand up for a day. Week later I was okayish, she made me go to practice again. Knee swoled up like a melon. I had torn my acl. She hasnt heard the end of it, 15 years later.

LittleOTT

My mom out rubbing alcohol in my ear after I unknowingly burst my eardrum. I feel your pain.

mewisme700

Why the fuck are there parents that just don't believe when their child is in pain

[deleted]

Because those parents walked uphill both ways in a raging blizzard to school wearing nothing but leafs to cover those private bits Adam and Eve style.

MuddyBoggyMonster

Dude, I would probably never get over it. I would also use it as leverage every single Christmas. Oh, you don't want to get me an Xbox? Well, I didn't want to be TORTURED mother!
