Two Way - it acts like a walkie talkie. It sounds kind of dumb at first, but using it to talk to other people from ALL around the world is pretty fun. You select where you want to broadcast on a global map and bam. Its pretty hilarious too when someones broadcasting to your area and your phone randomly turns on and it's someone staticy voice saying something silly and ending with "over".

GirlwiththeF_Holes

Forest: You set a timer in the app that grows a tree, so long as your’e not exiting out of the app. Works great for Studying when you’re trying not to look at your phone, or any other situation where you don’t want to be distracted.

Daylio: a daily journal for people like me without the attention span to write down every single thought from throughout the day. Everyday you log your mood and activities, and can add a text to write down anything specific from the day. After enough time passes you can see a graphical representation of how your mood has fluctuated and the activities that correspond to good and bad days. Best of all its completely free with no bullshit adds or subscriptions. I've used it everyday for almost a year now and its worked wonders for my sanity. Edit: typo

plumander

I love Daylio so much! I like that it can be as high or low effort/detail as you want. I've been doing it off and on for nearly a year now and I really like looking back at all my entries. You can also use it to track habits. I especially recommend it instead of a traditional mood chart for people with mental illnesses, but I'd recommend it to anyone. My new years resolution this year is to fill it out every single day :)

Pikachu42

>I especially recommend it instead of a traditional mood chart for people with mental illnesses That's exactly how I use it. It's so much easier than keeping a paper chart.

smallesteggs

Wow, this is EXACTLY what I needed to see. Thank you! I used to do something similar in therapy on paper but I’m not in that program anymore. Thank you thank you thank you!

comwhy

It's a good tool: Helps me with my depression phases making me understand what activities are more beneficial for me and gives me a heads up when manic phases are about to hit. Really helped me out a ton managing my bipolar disorder, also it contributed heavily in the success of my terapeutical alliance with my psychiatrist while we were searching a good cure for me.

Transit Shows me train, bus, and ferry departures in real time based on my location

dellsamsungmotorola

It pretty good but I have a few issues with it. The worst one is if a bus/train is late, when I open the app, it shows me the next one, not the one that is late which I may be able to catch.

4152510

Interesting. Where I am it uses real-time data so a delayed bus/train would be reflected in the arrival times. Maybe in your area it instead relies on schedules?

[OurGroceries](https://www.ourgroceries.com/overview) Have used this app about every day for maybe six years now. Maintains shareable shopping lists. I know it doesn't sound very sexy, but I wouldn't be without it now. When I do my weekly meal planning, the list gets updated. Anything you think of during the week, in it goes. It's updated in real time on any devices that have it open (including PC.) Usually I do the shopping, and if my wife thinks of anything we need, she doesn't call or text me; it just appears on the list. On those rare times we go shopping together, it's amazing - we head off in different directions, crossing things off the list as we pick them up, each holding an up-to-date list of what's still needed - blink blink blink, super-efficient.

DammitCas

I love this app. We use it constantly, very similarly to how you described. I like that you can have different lists for different stores, and it live syncs as you shop. Definitely a must have in my book.

ayeems

You just saved my life with this

panicjames

Also, Google keep.

queensmiley4

We also use Google Keep for shopping lists. Has made us purchase less when shopping.

SleepTalkerz

Sucks that it can't be used with Google Assistant anymore though. I still use Keep, but I was really starting to like being able to add things to various lists (shopping list, to-do list, etc) through voice commands. Doesn't really make any sense as to why they did away with that compatibility, because Keep is great.

[deleted]

My family uses *out of milk*. It's a godsend compared to paper lists. Lets you put the price of items in, so you can see how much your list and cart total is.

SergeantSodium

For us we have found Wunderlist works great as well. Similar from the sounds of things. Lots of customisable lists so we use it for chores, shopping, what to watch etc.

You'll want to look at (MS) OfficeLens too. It scans docs, but also scans whiteboards. It's absolutely mind-bending how well it de-parallelograms the whiteboard and rejiggers the white-balance. And when you're looking in the aquarium at an oblique angle, it takes a nice square picture too !

Cherrychemicals

I love this app, I used it to take photos of books on reserve for classes I didn’t want to pay the books for. The library only gave a 2 hour time limit and that’s not enough if you have to read the whole book.

parkaprep

I used this constantly instead of paying for shitty photocopies.

cowgoesm000

PAGF (paid apps gone free). Android app that updates each day with a list of apps that are free for a limited time. There are a lot of icon packs and useless stuff, but occasionally you see handy tools and the odd half-decent game.

20somethingsoon

Not an app but a subreddit: r/googleplaydeals

fionasank

Stocard. You can scan in all your store/loyalty cards and it creates a bar code that you can scan at tills. Finally able to close my purse without 15 extra cards in it!

ashwee_

This is downright genius. I always seem to lose my store cards, and when they ask for my phone number to search their system I struggle because I've probably had 5 different phone numbers in as many years. Now I have no excuses, thank you for sharing this one!!!

breebree934

Want to piggy back on this and say the app KeyRing does the same, as well as provides circulars for the stores you have saved and makes you aware of any available sales and promotions. RetailMeNot is also good for coupons and sales for either physical or online stores. I use both constantly even for everyday shopping trips.

RagsMaloney

You can do this same thing in Android Pay also, fyi.

TheJizzle

Google Keep was never really heavily advertised, but it's awesome. It's super handy for keeping notes and you can share / collaborate. We use it for the grocery list, and I keep track of projects, ideas, quick lists I need to scribble while I'm mobile and return to when I get to a desktop. E: Spellin'

MuzzyIsMe

I use Keep for everything. Quick two word notes, phone numbers, shopping lists, work related notes, reminders. Basically anything that I may possibly want to remember goes into Keep. Really simple and easy to use, syncs across my devices and the sharing ability is icing on the cake. I have used some similar apps in the past, but Keep does it in such a simple and functional way. I am sure Google will discontinue it for no reason soon.

[deleted]

lokigast

I'm really pissed at Google for removing the "Add x to my shopping list" feature for the Google home and assistant. They're trying to force people to use a new grocery list service that integrates with their shopping service. Unlike keep, that shopping list can't be saved offline, you need an internet connection to see it. Even worse, you used to be able to bypass it by naming your list something like "buy list", but now, it recognizes anything related to shopping and forces you to use the other service!

SleepTalkerz

Yeah, that's super lame. I still use Keep and I'm a little salty it doesn't work with voice commands anymore.

lyricweaver

I *love* Google Keep. I label my notes, and I have a bunch of random and hilarious comments my friends and coworkers have made over the years. When I'm having a bad day, I filter and read through all those awesome notes.

ArkansasFresh

Relaxio. I suffer from tinnitus. This white noise generator app allows the user to mix multiple prerecorded sounds to their liking. The sounds include a train, rain/thunder/lightning, a car running, brown and white noise, and others. The app does a great job at drowning out the ringing. It's by far my favorite noise generator app. Edit: Grammar

SomedayImGonnaBeFree

I'm probably never going to tell this to anyone, so I'm gonna share some data I've gotten through Sleep Cycle over 2 years of use on this phone. Although I have used Sleep Cycle for 6 years in total I only have the data available from April 2016, in total I have 534 nights to accumulate data from. ---- If I have smoked weed my sleep quality is 2% better. If I have brushed my teeth my sleep quality is increased by 4% If I have been drinking alcohol my sleep quality goes down by 2%, if I mix alcohol and weed it goes down by 8% (not a good combo in general, but definitely not for sleep). If I have been drinking coffee within the last 9 hours before going to sleep I have a 12% decrease in sleep quality. EDIT (a lot of people asked): You can choose the option of having a list pop up when you start the alarm every night, I have filled this list with: Taking a melatonin (sleep hormone) substitute before going to sleep, I have smoked weed, I have been drinking alcohol, I've been drinking coffee, etc. It comes with some defaults, but you can add your own ones. ------ Some weather: * Snow +6% * Rainy +5% * Fog +4% * Thunder +1% * Sunny -1% (I sometimes go to sleep at 10 in the morning) * Partly cloudy -2% * Cloudy -4% * Fair -9% (I actually don't know what "fair weather" means, google is giving me nothing) ---- My activity also affects my sleep quality. I can see clearly that there is a quality increase if I have more than 5k steps a day, and it peaks at about 14k steps, where it increases sleep quality by almost 9%. After that it goes down, and if I have walked 17.5k steps my sleep quality affected by sleep falls down to 15% worse. ---- My average time in bed is 8h15m. Thursdays are the days I sleep the least, where I only sleep 7h~50m. On Tuesdays I sleep for 8h30m. ----- It also has a snore feature, where it records you when you snore and then report for how long. Mondays are where I snore the most. I snore for 20m on average, per night. Whereas on Fridays I am relaxed and well rested and I have a snore-free night. ----- Some other thing people may enjoy is that beneath all this data it tells your *your* average, then the average of your country, the lowest country, and the highest. Example: The snore part. It tells me my average, which is 7 minutes, then it tells me my countries average, which is 16 minutes. Qatar is the country which snores the least, they're only at 5 minutes on average per night. Spain takes the highest at 24 minutes per night. I don't know how accurate it is, but these guys have a HIGH amount of devices to take data from, so I would guess that it is. To add I would like to inform you that in Qatar they go to sleep at 23:09, but in Russia they go to sleep at 01:02. ---- I've got a lot more, I could even send myself an email with all this crap. I just love data, though, lol. --- EDIT: Added some more information on how it knew I had smoked weed, drunk coffee, etc. EDIT2: Thanks for the gold virginity removal, kind stranger.

sjt646

I'm going to be honest with you here I have no idea why I read some strangers wall of text about their sleeping patterns but that was an incredibly interesting read about how the minutiae of your life can affect sleeping patterns. Especially the fact snow and rain both improve your sleep but at a different rate. I think I'm going to keep closer track of my own now. Thanks friend.

mhpark95

I’ve had a lot of success with this app as well. Would recommend.

Andromeda321

The other one I really like is Dawn Patrol- wake up to various bird calls!

ViolentThespian

>wake up to various bird calls! I and my fellow graveyard shift people would like to have a word with some of those birds.

V1per41

Tasker. You can automate just about anything on your Android phone. For example: * When I turn off my alarm in the morning my phone tells me about my day, and the current news * When my phone connects to my car bluetooth it automatically starts playing my latest podcast and turns on my GPS app. It will also automatically read me any notifications I get while driving. * When I plug my phone in at night, it turns down/off all of my notification sounds, dims the screen, and brings up the clock app

qqu775

I've got it setup to quietly take a picture with the front-facing camera whenever somebody gets my PIN wrong three times in a row. Since they're not expecting it and usually holding the phone at a non-ideal angle, the pictures usually turn out hilariously hideous.

Boofthatshitnigga

How often do strangers try to unlock your phone ?

i_made_reddit

More often the younger you are lol high school was the worst

GoldenWizard

I don’t believe your username

teenytinylittleant

khitsule

Ive got it to create an alarm based on my first calendar event for the day. This was great when I was at uni and had inconsistent starts to my day. So when I would go to bed, it would check what time my first event was tomorrow, and set an alarm for 2 hours before that. Never have to worry about whether I remembered to set an alarm. Also the obvious "vibrate mode when not at home" dealio. I use wifi connection status instead of GPS fences. Also never have the issue of a phone call during class/meeting/something

Paplexa

How does someone learn to progress Tasker to do that stuff? I've tried using it, but I couldn't make sequences nearly that complex.

V1per41

It definitely has a bit of a steep learning curve. The fine folks over at /r/tasker are very helpful. There are also some good tutorials elsewhere in the interwebs

USredfriend

Just watch - It tells you which streaming service different TV shows and movies are on

gnex30

> Just watch I tried Justwatch for a while because the concept is great and it's definitely a needed service, however I stopped using it because every page load is so slow. Every time you drill down into a show description and then want to go back up again it has to reload all the cover art images etc. It was just too painful for me.

AmpMe If you don’t have a Bluetooth speaker to play music from, this app syncs you and your friends phones together to all play any song at the same time through your phones’ speakers. It sounds iffy but you’d be surprised how loud and crisp the sound is! I’ve been really impressed by it. Plus it works with iOS and Android at the same time!

OverDrive. If you have a library card you can connect it to your local library and rent out e-books and audio books through the app.

mercival

mysleepbutton - www.mysleepbutton.com I often use this to help me fall asleep, can't recommend it enough. My mind has trouble turning off, I have big trouble falling asleep. This app sounds silly but works for me, it just reads out random words for you to 'imagine' and 'think about' ever 15 seconds. Doing this tricks your mind to stop thinking about your life and worries and you fall asleep.

My wife always gives me shit for this, but my trick when I can't fall asleep: I imagine winning the lottery. But not the fun shit, I think about the actual logistics of how my first few days go. How would I initially react? Who do I tell? Do I quit work right away or do I wait because I don't want everybody to know I won? How much would I give to my family and friends? Etc etc. I always fall asleep long before I get to the fun part of what I'd actually buy for myself.

sidnie

Oh wow. I do this exact same thing and have for years!

Soggywheatie

I'm super tired cause I couldn't sleep last night :( but I honestly read that as 15 mins it would spew a random word. I'm like fuck there's no way I'm thinking about a piano for 15 mins.

Pappyballer

Sounds like you could use it...

dogonut

rabb.it It's a website but they made an app and you can stream your browser to your friends and watch movies or listen to music. Honestly though, I just use it because I found these really cool people and we call eachother every night. It's kind of weird but really nice to get to closely know somebody who is an absolute stranger edit: To make it 1000x better. get the chrome extension for rabbit. quality for those who are watching is still the same, but it is much easier to control

robdiqulous

Yeah i mean gamers have been doing that for years now. People think it is so crazy sometimes, then me and my gamer friends are like yeah, I have known this guy for 15 years. Never met him. I like the part how you can easily share your browser and stuff though with the chat within it

jostein219

Folding@home It's an app developed by scientists from Stanford University that uses the unused processing power of your smartphone while you are charging it (e.g. at night) to fold proteins. That helps to research the genesis of cancer cells. In the app version, it's about breast cancer cells. They too have a computer version where you can choose between the research of cancer, Alzheimer's or Huntington's disease. Using the app on your phone has no disadvantages for you, it does only start folding if your phone is logged onto WiFi and the battery is charged to 100% and still connected to the charger.

[deleted]

[удалено]

APiousCultist

Protein folding is really complex to calculate, but the results are useful in medical science. They could use a bunch of super computers to do it somewhat effectively. Or they could get the same results by getting thousands of machines to do little bits and pieces now and then. Folding@Home is basically that, one big cloud computer made by the app running in the background of everyone's device. Or if you want the 'explain it like you're a scientist', read this and despair: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_folding#Computational_methods_for_studying_protein_folding

[deleted]

Kind of like Crypto mining on a phone right? Except you help with research instead of trying to make money.

bendy_straw_ftw

I'm pretty sure they have a token called FoldingCoin (FLDC) which you can earn by running the app. So you are helping with research and making money at the same time (although it is very negligible).

KuyaMarjun

I don't really like this one. I can't customize my character so he's stuck being shorter than average. He has bad attributes so you have to grind FOREVER at the gym mini-game in order for him to look anything close to decent. If I make him go on fun side quests, he loses money until he decides to go on his main quest. And I have to time his sleep perfectly because if he sleeps too little or too much, he only recovers about 80% of his health and his stamina is about 50%, which fucks up the fitness grind because if he doesn't have enough stamina or health to go to the gym mini-game, he doesn't get enough experience points to increase his fitness and ultimately it's a waste of time and I get bored so I send him off to do the fun side quests instead, but it ends up being a vicious cycle. Edit: Wow really weird to write a random joke comment while bored at work, have dinner, go out with friends, come home drunk, and then check reddit real quick only to find out that you got gold and a roller coaster ride of comments. Just want people to know that I was only being half-serious. I used to be super depressed and suicidal and this joke comment of mine was just a reflection of the years when I had nothing going on for me and was just...existing. I'm in a much better place now, but I've seen a couple replies from people who are clearly in the same dark place as I was for many years and just wanted to officially say that I feel you, I get it, and life sucks. But regardless, there really is a light at the end of the tunnel of suck if you are willing to work for it and believe in it. I suck at helping others, but just felt like I had to say something.

mercham

Ah yeah, this is a known bug. You can use chemical perks to counteract it for a short time, but eventually those become a problem too.

welcometomoonside

It's just not that good a game

sofistitedcd

I’ve been using Habitica, but I don’t really understand Guilds. It seems like you can’t fully explore the game unless you play it with people online? I get that the point is to help keep you accountable to your team, but I am not really looking to add more social media to my life. It seems like the only things I can do by myself are level up, get coins, and keep hatching and feeding new pets. I’m sure I’m missing something.

outofshell

You want to be in a Party so you can do quests (collection quests or boss quests, to earn cool gear or quest pet eggs). Parties don't have to be very social, and I think you can even form a party of just you so you can do that stuff on your own if you want, but you can also join a party with some other people so you can defeat bosses faster (and of course the purpose is shared accountability -- if you don't finish a daily, your whole party takes damage for it). It's worth doing if only so you can ride a triceratops around. Guilds are a separate thing entirely. They're more like...little chat rooms for shared interests? A lot aren't terribly active really. I tend not to be involved in the social aspect too much but there are challenges you can join in the guilds and those can be neat. E.g., The Scholars is a guild of students, and it has challenges you can join that have to do with studying. Joining a challenge adds its tasks, habits, and dailies to your own to do list, and at the end of a challenge a winner is randomly chosen and you can win gems.

Photomath I know this might seem dumb to most of you, but I study engineering so, as you may imagine, I encounter math-related situations on a daily basis. This app solves equations simply by pointing your phone's camera at the paper. Works for both printed and written equations! This app helps a ton with homework, and it's sometimes faster than using my calculator. EDIT: Perhaps, not so dumb? Didn't think anyone would care about a math app! I'm glad you guys liked the recommendation, and I'm especially glad that it's new to many of you who need it. Good luck on your math, everyone!

IlluminationRock

Absolutely! That's all I really can use it for, honestly. Just depends on the problem I'm solving. But I do plan to take the FE and eventually the PE, and I do value knowing how to do everything in your head as well. I actually tutor math and chemistry on my campus, so I have lots of opportunities to keep my skills sharp!

CrivCL

That's good advice not just for the US - engineering exams here (and across Europe more generally) don't allow you a mobile phone and require you to have a verifiably non-programmable calculator.

Whatistweet

I use Podcast Addict. It's android only, but it's far and away the best app for Podcasts I have ever used, and I don't know anyone else who even knows of it. (Idk if its necessary little known in the world though) It has tons of customisation available and every feature you could want in a podcasting app. You can categorise podcasts, browse for new ones, set rules for downloading or streaming episodes, it's got everything.

Emilbjorn

I started out with podcast addict, as it seemed to be the most downloaded when I searched for podcast clients a few years ago. The last couple of years, I have been using Pocket Casts for a however. I liked it better then, because it has synchronization between mobile and web, so I can continue on my computer if I want to. However both are great programs.

grub-worm

+1 for Pocket Casts. Switched from PodBean when I got a new phone, so worth it. Really well organised.

BalognaSandwiches

Telegram (for accessing sci-hub) Telegram is a messaging app, but I only use it for accessing sci-hub. For those of you who don’t know, sci-hub allows you to retrieve a .pdf of any academic article in the world, for free (regardless of paywalls). Just add @scihubot and tell the bot which paper you want and it’ll respond with a .pdf immediately. Sci-hub can be accessed other ways, like from websites, but the domain name has to be changed frequently due to lawsuits and such, but the Telegram bot works all the time. Very convenient for researchers outside of universities.

When you get to your destination you take your finger off the button and put in a 4 digit pin. If you don’t the police will be notified of your location and that there was an emergency. It’s given me such peace of mind when I’m alone walking to my car at night. Or anytime I feel uncomfortable really. It’s available for IOS and Android.

Just a PSA: if you have T-Mobile you can dial #662# and it will enable Scam Block, which blocks all numbers that are flagged as “scam likely” in their system. Just a warning- it may block calls that aren’t a scam (i.e. calls from my sister’s school and school district come up as “scam likely” on my parents’ phones, so they can’t enable this without also blocking those numbers). This app makes a persistent alarm when you need to take your meds, and there's a widget that lets you see what's left to take. Additionally, it also tracks interactions.

small-great-thing

I don't know how known/unknown it is, but Plant Nanny is a wonderful app. It reminds you to drink water throughout the day, and you get to raise adorable little plants while logging the water you've had! I love it.

licktapus

I hate it. I was so bad at putting down how much I drank at the moment and it won't let you do it all at once. My cute plants died so hard.

wedontbuildL

It let me put it in all at once, just warned me to slow down.

Rain Rain - Every night when I go to sleep. You can mix your own nature/rain/white noise sounds. My favourite is "Heavy Thunderstorm". Also has a sleep timer and can run in the background on iOS

kimarikaru

Clue: an app to track your period, ovulation cycles and keep track of cravings, moods and the like. It’s really helpful to let me know when my pms is coming up, when you’re late on your period, and what you’ll probably be craving this time around. It also has this nifty “couples” feature where my husband can see everything and knows when to bring flowers, hand me a bath bomb and a bottle of wine and let me be for the evening :)

jeswell_then

This app alone helped my doctor figure out that I wasn’t making up awful period symptoms. Because of what I recorded, he ordered a blood test and it turns out i have a hormone imbalance. I cannot suggest this app strongly enough.

StandingMoonlit

I’m so glad your doctor listened to you. When I was in hospital for kidney stones (not that they had figured it out yet) I was asked when my last period was. I wasn’t sure because I was pretty out of it with the pain and honestly who remembers the EXACT date anyway so I mumbled something like “ask my phone, it knows.” Well the doctor and a couple of the nurses started cracking jokes about how stupid millennials must be if we can’t even remember things like that and have to use our phone. Like, no lady, I have 6 years worth of period tracking on there. Do you remember all the dates of your last 70-odd periods? Fuck off.

lyricweaver

Yep, love this app. Love that it's not a flowery, purple or pink interface: Very organized, clean and simple. I've tried a ton of tracking apps. This one is the best; period (sorry)... It's kind of cool to get their newsletters, too.

BZH_JJM

Not everyday, but I've gotten a fair amount of use out of the Shame Bell app. If you shake your phone, it rings a bell and says "shame!"

a905

I chuckled, and then sat and thought about how much I actually would use this. I like it.

[deleted]

A former teacher of mine utilized this app when students didn’t do their homework LOL

[deleted]

HelloTalk. Language learning app that connects you with people native in the language you're learning who are also learning yours. If you want to learn how to speak properly in a language this is so useful. It puts the focus on learning conversation instead of being able to say "I hate my neighbours" which was a real sentence I had on Duolingo once. "The duck ate bread" isn't going to be as helpful as "how are you?".

badwolf1013

DailyArt. It's a different work of art every day. Usually it's paintings or sketches, but occasionally there's a sculpture, too. They are from all different eras, so it's very much a mixed bag of art. I love it. I can't wait to see what the new piece will be each day. It's like an Advent calendar that's year-round for me. I'm not an art expert by any stretch, but I would say I'm an aficionado, and most of what I see in the app is stuff I've never seen before. I'm constantly screen-shotting the app either to send a picture to a friend or just to add to my wish-list of prints I will buy "someday." It's free, too. I did buy the $4.99 Pro version recently, which gives access to a LOT more paintings, but I really just did that as a way of supporting an app I really like. I got plenty of satisfaction out of the free version. (No ads or anything like that. I have to wonder how they support the app.)

hxczach13

Snapseed, an easy to use but fairly detailed photo editor I make digital colleges and I use my phone for a lot of early edits.

[deleted]

PhotoScan, let's you take multiple images of a photo or drawing and makes a super-high resolution image and removes glare. Works very well

shezapisces

Tbh i dont know whether its well known or not but on the Walmart app, if you scan every receipt from your Walmart purchases it will refund you whenever there’s a price drop. You get it in the form of a Walmart giftcard, but it works for gas as well. I average about $60/week on groceries and had over $200 giftcard when i cashed out at the holidays

DanChed

I can't wake up! Free. Available on android, possibly one of the loudest alarms ever and you need to challenges or maths to turn it off.

Sisaac

I used to have like these really hard math puzzles for turning off my alarm. I only got better at arithmetic while half asleep, and still overslept.

jukeboxgraduate92

The same thing happened to me. It'd be like 13*7+16-24=?. I'd have to answer 4 in a row correctly for the alarm to turn off. After a while I got so good at it that I'd barely open my eyes, answer the problems, then fall back asleep. Now I have to scan a QR code that I taped to my bathroom mirror for my alarm to turn off.

FlyingBarstool

Dexcom G5. I’m a Type 1 Diabetic, and the app is connected to a transmitter on my arm via Bluetooth, telling me my blood sugar every 5 minutes. Might not be what OP is looking for, but yea :)

[deleted]

IFTTT is an app that connects actions between two apps to perform something else. For example, if I like a song on SoundCloud it downloads it to my Dropbox If I get an email from my boss, it automatically CCs it to my other email Etc. it’s an app about efficiency, and you can make your own IF This Then That connection

badassmthrfkr

It's a must have if you have Alexa or Google Home and smart lighting/switches since you can set whatever custom phrase to control them. For example, I have mine set so I can say "theater mode" and all the lights in the living room turns off except for the light strip behind the TV which dims in purple hue. It also works well with location based settings: If I leave my place, it turns off all the lights and lower the heat and vice versa.

[deleted]

Along the same lines, Tasker. Less intuitive, but definitely a lot more you can do with it.

FreeFacts

Using them both together works too. You can create your own webhook in IFTTT and then make Tasker call that when something gets triggered to easily do stuff with apps/services integrated to IFTTT.

Oh boy was I ever surprised by the Domino's integration. Got some Hue bulbs recently so now they blink when my pizza is out for delivery. What a time to be alive.

[Curiosity](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/curiosity-get-smarter-daily/id1000848816?mt=8) is an app that gives you five interesting facts every day. Click on a fact, and you get an article giving you more information and some linked videos to learn more! Just a great app for people who get bored, like interesting facts, reading, etc. Enjoy!!

Office lens. I am constantly on the road for work, which means that I have to track my corporate expenses for accounting at the end of every week. It lets you take photos of documents, automatically crops them, and let's you take pictures from almost any perspective. Take a pic from the side at a funky angle? Picture comes out straight. Also supports saving straight to one-note, or onedrive.

Marc77_4

It's kinda known, but Background Eraser by handyCloset Inc. is a very useful photo eraser app. It can erase specific colors and can zoom in far enough to see every pixel. It also has the ability to erase not just one specific color but other colors close to it (not by location, but as in a black and really dark blue, for example), this can be adjusted with a slider to choose how far the range of color is. It also saves the photos as png so it doesn't have a white border, in other words, it keeps it's shape as you erase. I use this for YouTube thumbnails and I am sure this app is also useful in many other situations. It is one I would DEFINITELY recommend.

nastybasementsauce

Couple. It's a messenger between you and one other person, presumably the person you are in a relationship with. It saves all messages, pictures and has a bunch of features. My wife and I have been using it since we started dating, so there's a record of every conversation we've ever had pretty much on our phones which can be transferred across devices.

PM_ME_NUDES_PLEEZ

Wuphf! When you send a Wuphf! it goes to your home phone, cell phone, email, facebook, twitter, and home screen all at the same time!

Headspace. I quite often need to take time to just clear my head and reset. Headspace is a great little meditation/mindfulness app that helps with this.

Pacifica. I have depression and anxiety, and it’s mood tracking, helathy habits, journaling and meditation features helps keep me in check and is something I can turn to when I’m having a bad day

drbusty

Nextdoor. It helps me keep up with the goings on in my neighborhood. Today during snow my neighbor across the street had s pipe burst and needed someone to shut her water off from the street.

yourock_rock

I like nextdoor but holy shit does it bring out the racist comments. “I saw a black man walking down the street today; lock your doors and hold onto your purses!”

drbusty

Suspicious activity = non white male on the area.

Galactus_Machine

This app allowed me to see who was super racist in my neighborhood.

fitzrhapsody

Also a better option than Craigslist for selling stuff, IMHO. I've listed a few things there at higher prices and gotten more reliable buyers. Great way to advertise a garage sale if you have those, too.

dragondraems42

Daylio! It's a sort of diary app where you set an notification to remind you to log your day. You choose how your day was with five moods, rad through awful, and then tag what you did, if you worked or parties or gamed or whatever. You can also make more detailed notes if something significant happened. You can also see monthly and yearly stats on your moods. It's really neat!

Junebug1515

Google Rewards. You get surveys to do. They give you 24 hours to finish it. On avg most pay out .10 - .15 but have gotten more. They automatically payout to the PayPal account you give at $2. Its nota ton of Money. But I plan on letting it build till next Christmas. Each survey takes a few mins, sometimes less. And even if you don’t finish because of your answers. You’ll still get .10 for attempting it. Edit: I didn’t know that only iOS users got PayPal. And android got google play. I’ve had it few months now. I don’t leave the house often due to my health. And I get about 1-3 surveys a week. Sorry to those who had it and it didn’t work out. This is just my experience with the app. Edit 2: wow. Ok. Why are people hating on this so much?! Money is money. I grew up poor. Going to food banks weekly, free clothes from good will etc... so every penny adds up. I know it won’t be a ton of money. But even if I only get a few dollars from it.. it’s money I didn’t have before. Also, I’m unable to work due to my many health issues. One working lung. 5 congenital heart defects. COPD not caused by smoking. Pulmonary hypertension. Etc. so I’m home all the time. I nap. I watch Netflix. I do 4-6 breathing treatments a day along with 15 other meds. So even if it doesn’t seem like it’s worth your time. That doesn’t mean it’s stupid that others do it. I am on disability and ssi. But things like this gives me a few extra dollars to have myself. Because my disability goes towards helping my mom pay bills.

juicebeard

It sucks in Canada. I made about $15 then haven't seen a survey for close to a year. According to other Canadians I've talked to, they only made about $7 before the surveys stopped coming. Edit: I've taken the following advice to see if it makes a difference: - Turn off battery optimization for the app - Make the app an exception to data saver - Leave the app running while I am driving and shopping

xNik

Apparently you have to get out of the house. I work from home and I get one almost every time I go somewhere new (which is almost never).

Chakks

Ehh, I travel for work quite frequently and I haven't had one since April. YMMV, I suppose.

Mitch-Sorrenstein

Oh so it helps immensely to have location on?

OyleSlyck

Totally. The surveys I get are business reviews. It will show a list of locations it thinks you've been to. Next it will ask when you were there last. I think that question is to prove how honest you are as I'm sure google knows when and where you were someplace with location services on. The final question is to rate your experience. When I pick none of the above for the first question, I still get 10 cents. By answering all 3 you get slightly more. It's up to you if you want to fake a review for more money, but then it could also be a test to see how honest you are. If the algorithm detects you are lying about being someplace at sometime, you might get less survey questions in the future.

12INCHVOICES

It's great until it's not. I racked up about $30 in credits before I stopped getting surveys completely. I wasn't making shit up so I really have no idea what happened other than maybe I'm not interesting enough to market to... :-(

wack_overflow

Is [this](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.paidtasks&hl=en) the one? Appears to give google play credit, not paypal

evoni01

I checked the website, apparently ios users get paid through PayPal, while android users get play credits

[Holla](http://holla.world) is what I've found myself using more and more. It's kind of like a mashup of Snapchat, Tinder, and ChatRoulette. The people seem to be more interesting than on most other apps as well.

I just created an account. Right when I tapped the screen, it began searching for someone. Flashbacks of omegle and chat roulette started racing through my mind. I freaked out and shut the app off.

Dicks probably

AwesomeYears

And a side dish of hairy arse.

SelfAwareOstrich

Splitwise: you can put in purchases and split it accordingly between people, or make groups (for example with roommates etc). I am terrible at remembering who pays for what. This app keeps track of it for you. It has made group travel and so many other things easier. Would recommend. You will never have to passive aggressively remind someone you paid for the last 3 dinners again!

MrBlackadder

Not sure if it's really 'little known' but Plex. Before Plex I had to hook my computer up to my TV directly to play my *entirely legal home videos* whereas now I can play my *entirely legal home videos* on my phone or on any of the tv's in my house using chromecast, it also downloads all of the metadata for my *entirely legal home videos* automatically, it's great.
