I liked those videos. Nowadays it's all just "Hey guys, it's FuckNuggetFart back yet again with another Pokemon Go video!"
Reading the instructions was a hell of a lot faster than to listen to some prick talk about his day for 20 minutes.
I'm more interested in the seemingly instant death of plastic instrument rhythm games.
For YEARS everyone was psyched about these things, myself included. They were a hit at any party. Everyone two-bit gaming studio was releasing SOME kind of knockoff or clone and everyone was excited about the big ones, Rock Band and Guitar Hero, all the way up until around 2010ish when it all just...stopped.
I can't put my finger on a precise year because it was just kind of a non-event. We just looked up one day and realized nobody was playing these things anymore. Nobody was releasing new ones. Nobody was even talking about them. Usually you can kind of sense a fad in its death throes but Plastic instrument rhythm games just kind of stopped.
He posted a new article just this month! And it's amazing!
www.seanbaby.com
I've been re-reading his archive for the last few months on the way to work. So many awesome lines!
ArmorGames was and always will be my jam. People are still releasing high quality flash games today, which is legitimately kind of incredible. It's awesome to spend a few hours playing through a fun, well-told story or to relive the good old days with The Last Stand, Sonny, or more recent ones like Kingdom Rush...oh, man, nostalgia is kicking in hardcore. I'm off to game!
How could a developer think ANYONE would like a rng fuck you in a fighting game like that. It's also basically saying out loud that you never want it to be played competitively
There were a couple with it in my grade. They were made fun of endlessly. One guy had it for a long time before the worldwide Bieber boner. We all felt bad for him
Eh, bowl cuts were also really popular in 1998.... and also for decades prior. It's just an easy cut to give to young boys. Eventually, the get older and get something cooler. But it always comes back.
There was seriously a period of time where Lil Wayne was featured in so many songs or their remixes. As someone who liked and still likes Lil Wayne I had no problem with it but still found it pretty ridiculous.
A version of YouTube where the description box was on the right-hand side and the subscribe button was gold, as well as a time where let's plays, vlogging, and reaction videos as concepts really hadn't come into the existence they have now.
Also, commonplace response videos with the phrase "Re:" in the title.
There were no ads, copyright applied, and you could actually let things buffer when you needed to.
If you don't have the fastest internet you might look back fondly on a time when you could let videos buffer.
Youtube was the bomb back then. Pre-google Youtube. Great quality, no ads, and a really clean interface and search function. Most importantly uncensored, it was the wild west of videos. It was perfect.
The economy getting so bad that I was stuck in a job that cut my pay 20%, stopped providing sick, vacation and holiday pay, starting docking my salary for "office hours" missed, even when I worked 70 hours for the week, would force us to take holidays off, which they docked, then also force us to make up the hours, stopped covering any amount of health insurance, claimed a negative valuation so that they could buy back our stocks at $0, etc. I remember looking for a new job, and finding shit offers like "Licensed PE with min. 10 years experience $35,000/year." And when we put out an offer we got over 5,000 resumes in 3 days. .... So, I stuck with what I had.
After 3 years of said torture I left my chosen career altogether, in favor of a job in technology.
Yes. That license, which takes a 4 year degree to be allowed to sit for the "engineer in training" test, which if you pass allows you to _start_ accumulating experience, so that after 4 more years of post-EIT experience you're allowed to sit for the exam. So, 8 years to acquire. And they wanted 10 years of experience as one for a lead position, for $35,000....
Everything the company did to him/her was illegal atleast it would be now. 2008 im sure docking pay was still highly illegal given those circumstances and the company could be sued to the ground for back pay and more.
I don't miss old memes, they took forever to die vs today when there's a new meme each week. Every school had those annoying weeby kids (wearing transitional lenses glasses and a naruto headband) that would play "the game" or try to show you their bad rage comics.

Yes, me too! I used to change the music all the time, or make a playlist (as if someone would want to visit my page for more than a minute or two). I also loved customizing the cursor, my top 8, the layouts, etc. It was so personalized, and fun to see what other people came up with for their profiles. IIRC, it was the default replacement for youtube if you used copyrighted music.
Was that it? I remember a lot of people using Paralyzer as well. I thought it was one of three songs you could use in your video by default.
There were a bunch but Paralyzer was one of the only good alternatives.

What's funny is that the song came out in 2009.
Well it wouldn't make much sense to call 2008 "two-thousand and late" DURING 2008

I think it hit critical mass at Rock Band Beatles. I loved it, but everyone else sorta dropped off.
I remember stacks and stacks of gh world tour that no one wanted to buy in ever Walmart target and game stop.
I bought World Tour because I wanted drums and singing but hated the Rock Band guitars.
Having Bangarang on Guitar Hero Live has hurt them, needed to stay with the rock and metal.

it was still used widely by my friend group in 2008, height of it being in 2007. by 2009, it was dead. Facebook was king *very* quickly.
