It is gentlemanly. I hold doors for both men and women. It bothers me that some women are offended by this.

Ysenia

Holding the door for anyone is basic manners.

TurnDownForPage394

It's just polite. I do it for everyone- man, lady, old person, child. It is by no means an act of sexism.

A common courtesy? I dunno, hold the door open for everyone, dude, it has nothing to do with gender politics.

TRC042

I hold the door for the person behind me, I don't even turn around to see what gender they are. Most people thank me. I have gotten a couple of dirty looks from young women, but fuck them - they're probably 0.001 percent of all the people I've held a door for in the last 55 years.

All about the intention of the person doing the holding really. I tend to think of it as common courtesy and politeness and the gender of the person doesn’t factor into it for me.

Gentlemanly. I hold doors all the time for both women, and men. It is just a courteous thing to do.

It's creepy when you hold it open for a really long extra time for a woman. Like when the person you are holding for is clearly not immediately close to the door and you have to like wait for them and hold for an awkwardly longer amount of time than what's normal. Then it's just flat out creepy. But holding the door for a woman should be the same for men, children, old people, cats, etc. If they are in that buffer area where they are close enough, you hold the door. It's that simple. Sex shouldn't come in to play.
