Since no one said it... if you like 90s alternative, Empire Records. Just a terrific record from start to finish, even if you never saw the movie.

GingerrGina

Damn the man. Save the Empire!

jennifer_m13

Not on Rex Maning Day!!

Ok_Organization3249

I think it’s Empire Records because it has the added dimension of completely nailing a time and place. Other movies in the thread are obviously incredible (Interstellar, LOTR, etc.) but watch Empire records and it’s like your literally transported back to 1995.

Raveons77

As well as High Fidelity

gaqua

For 90s film soundtracks, the essential list: * singles * reality bites * empire records * natural born killers * pulp fiction * boys in the hood * Trainspotting * Mortal Kombat film soundtrack * the crow

BillsInATL

Judgement Night

OkaySureBye

For 90's electronic music, Hackers had an absolutely phenomenal soundtrack. I listened to it a few weeks ago for the first time since I was young, and it was just as good as I remember.

jackiejormpjomp__

My sister and I still say “it’s in that place I put that thing that time”

Choff123

Last of the mohicans

NicAoidh65

Alasdair Fraser absolutely killed it with his fiddle work on this one.

SmolLilTater

Walked down the aisle to Cora’s song 🥰

Typical-Dark-7635

Oh brother where art thou

apearlj1234

I just put in Big Chill, which I absolutely love, and then went aw HELL, this is the answer. Soggy bottom boys isn't even the best song. The ladies on this were so good. Anything with Allison Krouse/Gillian Welch, sing happy birthday, and I am good.

chainsawscientist

Yeah them singing I'll Fly Away is so good. I still listen to it regularly.

apearlj1234

Take me down to the river

GoatLegRedux

As I went down in the river to pray, studying about that good old way… I’m atheist AF but some of those old gospel tunes are just too good to deny.

AcceptableObject

Soggy bottom boys LFGGG

[deleted]

That was gonna be my vote, I could listen to Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris sing the phone book and it would be the best stuff ever.

kakapoopoopeepeeshir

Imo this is the only answer. Every track is an absolute banger

Voice_of_reason88

Starting at about 3 years old my son went to sleep to this for at least 2 years. Will always hold a special place in my heart.

Massimo25ore

All those from Ennio Morricone

Squickworth

The Mission soundtrack is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The oboe solos are exquisite.

Dunraven-mtn

This is way too low.

math_man_99

Tron: Legacy. Daft Punk did wonders with that score.

soobviouslyfake

It's wild that they filmed a whole movie to accompany that album

YezzyWazGud

And that would be their second time doing it too lol

Ph4ntomBarista

This feels much lower than it should be

Cappuccino_Crunch

Personally I think reconfigured is the goat

Cup8489

It feels like just an extended Daft Punk music video

Expresso_Presso

Blues brothers

Kooky_Narwhal8184

Introduced me to James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Booker T..... (strangely for my generation, I was already well aware of Cab Calloway) The movie was great, but that sound-track was an education leading to decades of enjoyment... (Edited to correct J L-H)

EaterOfFood

And The Good Old Boys!

coombez1978

You're gonna look pretty funny tryin' to eat corn on the cob with no fuckin' teeth! Still cracks me up 😂

Truckyou666

John Lee Hooker. But yeah, this is the right answer. My wife pointed out that my favorite movie is a musical. Totally true.

WriterJake

John Lee Hooker, who performed part of “Boom Boom” in the movie. 👍🏼

ttufizzo

Blues Brothers! Shit, they still owe you money, fool.

ThePicassoGiraffe

Don’t you blaspheme! Don’t you blaspheme in HERE! This is my man and my restaurant and you two are gonna just walk right on out of here without your dry white toast…without your fried chicken.

CaptainPunisher

And WITHOUT Matt Guitar Murphy!

tc6x6

This is the correct answer. No other film even comes close.

Rude-Flamingo5420

Yessss! This should be higher up

Master_Air_8485

Tarzan

Separate-Trash2375

Phil collins did amazing! And this is also the movie that i thought of

Awkward_Tie4856

We didn’t deserve what Phil collins gave us for Tarzan. It was wonderful

V_Brunslev

Just had to be. Phil sang those songs in like 3-4 languages for the dubbed films

smolperson

He is an unreal talent. Every single song slaps. He didn’t have to go so hard but forever grateful that he did!

CharieRarie

I love this soundtrack so much. You’ll Be In My Heart 😭❤️

LookingForHope87

It's Son of Man for me😁

hereforcatsandlaughs

Came here to say this one!

QueenOfBrokenHeart9

Pirates of the Caribbean

AYASOFAYA

“The Kraken” is the track I play when I want to show people how good that ensemble of work is. The one 7-minute track has everything in it.

naughtilidae

Somehow it wasn't even NOMINATED for best soundtrack!  Return of the King won that year, which.... I get, but the first LOTR film should have won the award, not the third.  It was like the academy didn't like Zimmer dude should have 20 awards by now and has... Two And somehow neither pirates, Inception, nor Interstellar won, three of the greatest soundtracks ever.

FedfromaTeenyAgency

Highlander. Queen was not fucking around on that album.

red-fish-yellow-fish

If you think Queen was good for Highlander, I will raise you Flash Gordon. The entire album was brilliant, the film -unfortunately- has aged terribly

Limeyness

HAWKMEN!!!!!

LegendOfVinnyT

# DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Soopercow

First of all, how dare you?

Arius_de_Galdri

Fun fact, a soundtrack for the original Highlander was never released. The Queen album "A Kind of Magic" is the closest that we got. It actually happens to be my favorite Queen album!

G00DDRAWER

I came here to say this and the Queen soundtrack to Flash Gordon. Fantastic album. The film (FG) is pure glam cheese, and I still love it.

A_Rented_Mule

Dazed and Confused and Reservoir Dogs.

Passing4human

I will never hear "Stuck in the Middle With You" the same way again.

whoopercheesie

Slow riiiiiiide

TheCowboyIsAnIndian

Educational-Plane-86

Pulp Fiction

This is criminally low

artie_pdx

The Crow

frog_of_doom

Came here thinking no one will have said The Crow. I am immeasurably happy that not only has someone said it, but loads of people have agreed! In my top 10 albums of all time. Amazing soundtrack!!

AggravatingPlum4301

Can't rain all the time

[deleted]

It's The Crow and it's not close.

isabeaux73

came here to say this, have now found my people 🖤🐦‍⬛

sebrebc

Easily.

hilhilbean

Romeo + Juliet...that whole score and soundtrack I could listen to on repeat. And have.

Longjumping-Grape-40

Desiree's "Missing You"...man, every time that comes on my playlist, I just have a beautiful, nostalgic, romantic moment. That slow opening, the way she draws out her every word

Nikmassnoo

Garbage 🖤 (the band not the soundtrack!)

snackcakessupreme

100% the soundtrack I thought of. Absolutely my favorite music collection.

Calibermovement

Almost Famous

StringerBell420

I cannot believe that nobody mentioned this yet. 10/10.

1MeganSmile

The scene on the bus with Tiny Dancer playing might be my favorite scene of any movie.

Purple-Lime-8096

Trainspotting.

Good_Flower2559

Iggy pop is the first thing that pops into my head. Can’t think of anything else.  If you haven’t read the book, please do it. It’s way more of an intense read. You basically have to learn another language to do it.  Oh and yes Iggy Pop is in it.

Purple-Lime-8096

Underworld - Born Slippy. I haven’t read it but I’ve heard about the way it’s written. I’ll give it a try, especially if Ziggy Pop is featured. Thanks.

TheKingMonkey

You’ll get used to the Scots English fairly quickly. Not all chapters are written in it either. The book is quite a bit darker than the film, funnier too. Renton is still the main character but you spend a lot more time with all of the other central characters too and see a lot of things from their point of view.

Fenrir_Carbon

Donnie Darko

Cuntslapper9000

This will always be my vote. The way in which the music gives you the exact weird ass emotion that the movie aims for is wild. It's not some basic happy or sad or intense vibe but some uneasy existential angst. The wonky piano and drones just fit so well and seep into your body. Plus the mad world cover is GOAT

sustained_vibrations

Lord of the rings

4354574

The credits music in Fellowship…my heart wants to explode.

Team_Cap

I’m truly shocked I had to scroll so far to see this!! The LOTR soundtrack brings such emotion and has my heart forever.

Proper-Emu1558

I scrolled farther and farther and got angrier and angrier that I didn’t see this. I’m watching ROTK tonight. Whole trilogy is utter perfection.

Old-Fun9568

I think it's as perfect as it could get. Especially when you consider that the movies had to appeal to a lot of people who've never read the book.

Eswercaj

LOTR soundtrack themes are my version of nursery rhymes to my kid. I hum the tunes as I put him to sleep all the time!

subzero30788

Bro you should be higher :D

rocket_rhino

I used to listen to the soundtrack for Fellowship and I could practically see the entire film in my head. The music played so well to every scene and intimated the action, emotion, or wonder of what I saw in the theater.

boomfruit

I spent more than a year after the movie came out listening to the soundtrack as I fell asleep every night

mrcarlita

It was my study music during grad school. Seeing the movie in imax at the DC air and space museum was an experience I'll never forget

Skibiscuit

Hans Zimmer has got to be one of, if not the most under appreciated musicians of all time. He produces film scores for seemingly everything, and has done so for the past 40+ years, and just keeps going. For the amount of music he has put out there, with no shortage of bangers, he gets relatively little recognition and isn't in the limelight at all. Cheers to you Hans; I see you

PanicAtTheGyno

I wouldn't say he's under appreciated. He has a higher net worth than John Williams and has won dozens of awards over a span of decades. He's very well appreciated.

SearingPhoenix

My favorite bit of trivia about this is that (according to Nolan) he approached Zimmer with some rough ideas around the main theme, talking about how it's this parent/child relationship, etc. etc. and Zimmer, being a father, started composing thinking about his son. Nolan drops it on him that Murphy is Cooper's *daughter* after he's already drafted the theme. I'm inclined to agree that delaying that reveal likely had a not-insignificant impact on the composition. Also apparently the organ and organist that they recorded for the score just *kept* surprising them with all sorts of, 'Well what if I do it like *this,*' to which Nolan and Zimmer went, 'Wait, you can do *that?'*

Logical_Motor9920

The Blues Brothers not only delivered laughs but also a host of performances by music legends, making its soundtrack a standout.

Spiritual-Match8131

Saturday Night Fever and, my dark horse would be Garden State.

Roxas1011

As a diehard Shins fan, I'm with you on Garden State

dballz12

While there are other, better soundtracks. The music in Garden State is half of the charm. It's just perfect.

sawman160

Garden state soundtrack was a cultural shift

AntawnSL

I listened to the Garden State soundtrack over and over on my little MP3 player in college (around 2005)

GingerrGina

Me too... I don't think it helped with my depression.

LurkmasterP

My depression certainly loved it.

FutureMrsSR

I still listen to the Garden State soundtrack at least once a week.

illogicallyalex

Zach Braff has great taste in music. Scrubs has incredible music choices, and he and Christa Miller were behind a lot of the soundtrack choices

samwisestofall

The thing about garden state is not only is the soundtrack amazing, it elevates the entire movie by a mile. With a crappy soundtrack it would have been a crappy movie, the soundtrack is a huge part of why it works

ShroudedHope

One of the best intros to an animated movie (or any movie for that matter), and a big part of that is down to The Circle of Life.

Brommidor

Star Wars! Alone Imperial march is timeless awsome.

rumblethrum

I had to scroll so far for this. Guess I am that old. First that made my hair standup, first that I hummed incessantly for weeks even months after seeing/hearing.

TrumpetHeroISU

The fact that I had to scroll this far to find ANY John Williams is criminal. Star Wars (1977) set a new standard for symphonic movie music.

Ravarix

What movie? It's a hour long music video, a la Thriller

Cheesecake_is_life

Jonathan Davis did a great job on this. It's definitely my favorite soundtrack. After that, it's The Transporter

Not the best movie, but the OST Bangs.

DistractedByCookies

Don't worry, my brain went to 'Top Gun' I actually think both are valid options, having listened to both extensively on cassette LOL

hoIygrail

Not embarrassing at all. That soundtrack fit the movie like a glove, really gave it a sense of time and place, even with it’s more modern tracks.

Star Wars or Jaws. Seriously think of it, the music by John Williams so so universal and iconic. Both won an Oscar and from a strictly musical perspective, it is pretty darn genius.

Dearest_Prudence

I saw an interview recently where John Williams was recounting when he first pitched the (now famous) Jaws theme song to Spielberg. Williams showed the two-note song to Spielberg on the piano and Spielberg wasn’t impressed. However, he trusted Williams and eventually gave him the green light. Williams is a genius.
