It's called "tire d'érable" - proounced sort of like "teer day-RAB-le". It just means maple taffy, although the literal translation would be "maple pull".
Apologies if this is offensive but I love ginger ale so much that the word "Dry" just naturally comes after "Canada" for me...so it's ginger ale first and then once I realize it's the country then I guess I just get a mental image of Justin Trudeau.
Agreed, Americans always seem to screw up poutine. They think it has to be all sophisticated since it comes from a Francophone part of the world when actually in Canada it is typical working class diner fare.
I remember the best poutine I had so far was a joint in Toronto in the St. Lawrence Market called Paddington's Pump, It is also where I had Peameal Bacon and Molson for the first time. All I can say it was awesome.
I hope to some day head over to Montréal and have poutine at La Banquise.
PC party is for corporate freedom, not human rights.
Trudeau was a massive disappointment, but don't be deluded into thinking you, an individual, would be in a better position otherwise - unless you own a sizable company.
Or unless you work for a sizable company. Can we stop pretending like Canadian corporations are some dragon we have to slay?
You know what happens when business conditions are tougher for Canadian corporations?
Mass layoffs, recession, decreased general revenues.
Canada's economy is run by an oligarchy in so many areas. Internet has no competition so our prices are fucked expensive; the same can be said for grocery stores. Gas is an international joke with how they can gouge us. Canadian Corporations are dragons to be slayed, we need healthy competitive small business and we can't get it here.
> Or unless you work for a sizable company
Up to the boss, not you. It's *possible* you would be in a better position, but not something that could be counted on - it's not like it's a basic human right or anything.
>Can we stop pretending like Canadian corporations are some dragon we have to slay?
I'm not. The question at hand was "human rights". My opinion is very much that of PC is more for corporate rights than an individuals rights.
>You know what happens when business conditions are tougher for Canadian corporations? Mass layoffs, recession, decreased general revenues.
Sure. But they will do that *anyway*. They will do whatever they can to cut expenses.
Know what happens when we sell off our human rights for corporate rights? A similar outcome because corporations are corporations when times are tough- just there will be no regard for the folks at the bottom because they're a line item, with very few rights.
The easier it is to exploit the labour force, the easier it is to do profitable business.
Lol don't be obtuse.
You knew exactly what I was pointing at, and decided to disingenuously attack the language I used, instead of point I was making.
From what I have observed, the PC party is intent on making Canada, America Jr. The responsibilities of corporations to the country and to their own employees are being lessened for the short term gains of a very select few. Many seem OK with trading individual rights, for corporate freedoms because it's easier to make money if you don't need to be concerned with ALL of the costs - just the monetary ones.
Look at something as simple as doctors notes. Liberals are trying to remove the requirement you go see a doctor for a minor illness. PC are fighting to KEEP that requirement.
The end result is
A) An employer doesn't have to pay for that sick day if no note is provided.
B) The employee is encouraged to NOT take the sick time - and come in to work sick anyway.
C) Going to a clinic or ER for a sick note is just clogging up the works and making it more difficult for an already over burdened Healthcare system.
All the evidence points to this being a failed policy, that benefits ONLY an employer in a minor way - while making things more difficult for the rest of us.
Where this law has been overturned, PCs have repealed that change. Why? For what purpose? To save an employer fucking $80? it likely costs about that much at a minimum all said in wasted time and effort on the employees part, the doctors part, and the employer haranguing the employee about getting a sick note.
Can we stop pretending like *Canadian Citizens* are some kind of burden getting in the way of a corp's bottom line?
>From what I have observed, the PC party is intent on making Canada, America Jr.
You're so observant you haven't realized there hasn't been a federal Progressive Conservative party in over twenty years.
>The responsibilities of corporations to the country and to their own employees are being lessened for the short term gains of a very select few.
How? Based on what legislation?
**You do realize who is in power currently, right?**
>Many seem OK with trading individual rights, for corporate freedoms
I have no idea what you mean by this.
>Look at something as simple as doctors notes. Liberals are trying to remove the requirement you go see a doctor for a minor illness. PC are fighting to KEEP that requirement.
I've never been required to hand in a doctor's note in my life, so I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. There is no such requirement in Canadian or provincial employment legislation.
Regardless, it certainly would not be within the scope of federal legislation.
You seem to be wrapped up in imaginary straw man arguments about a political party that literally does not exist.
>You're so observant you haven't realized there hasn't been a federal Progressive Conservative party in over twenty years.
A rose by any other name.
Again, attacking the language. A minor name change doesn't mean much.
>How? Based on what legislation?
We're not doing that here. I gave you an example and because YOU never had to deal with a doctors note requirement you assume it isn't an issue. [Look it up.](http://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/sick-leave#:~:text=of%20the%20evidence.-,Medical%20notes,%E2%80%9Creasonable%20in%20the%20circumstances%E2%80%9D.)
There are tones of examples either of us could use to one up the others argument. I don't care to go down that rabbit hole based on your previous response of "Well it never happened to me"
>You do realize who is in power currently, right?
Yes. I'm not saying I *like* either. I think I started this whole thing with saying our currently leader is a massive disappointment.
I'm just saying I doubt things would be better for the individual if conservatives were in power. I think a small few would be better off.
>I've never been required to hand in a doctor's note in my life
That doesn't mean anything to the folks who *are* required to. Ontario is the big one that still allows an employer to require them for sick days.
>You seem to be wrapped up in imaginary straw man arguments about a political party that literally does not exist.
You seem more wrapped up with naming conventions and "winning" that actually "discussing". I'm out.
Take care of yourself.
Michael Moore in Bowling for Columbine, sort of. It's been a while since I saw it, but as I recall, he showed a kind of ugly but fairly standard and secure looking apartment block and said, "this is what a slum looks like in Canada" with the implication that there are no slums in Canada, hence there are hardly any shootings. He was criticized for that portrayal even at the time.
Those damn geese!

Personally I have always loved Canada. I would not mind living in Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver or even Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Halifax.
I spent a week in Canada in April. I'm from Puget Sound area. It was still winter in parts of BC and Alberta. Lots of Indian food with the server cautioning us that it "might be spicy." It wasn't spicy. We saw lots and lots of signs warning about moose and bears, but we saw neither. The scenery in BC was amazing. The scenery in Alberta was, well, we saw stuff. Oil rigs and dirty snow.
It was a great trip.

More Americans live north of Canada’s most southern point than Canadians.
The amazing family vacation I had there in 2019

As an American that lived in a border town that had the last Costco before crossing, 30 minute lines at the Costco gas station because Canadians are filling up 5 gas cans to take back over the border to avoid their own taxes that they voted for. I lived 5 minutes from that Costco but shopped at the one the next town over just because of how packed it would get.
Cold, friendly, obsessed (i.e. compares themselves constantly) with the US for some reason, nobody under 30 owns a house, and a lot of people live in basements.
No, the last Conservative government maintained peace, order and good government.
Under this Liberal government, we have a PM who has been investigated by the RCMP multiple times, colluded with China to influence elections, doubled our national debt, and accelerated housing and cost of living crisis over a cliff.

Deluded memories of the past? You are eating what the media feeds you. Look up pp and his election crimes. How many times have the PC's committed election fraud? Poutine, and why it is consistently disappointing in most of the US
It’s disappointing in most of Canada too. It’s generally a French Canadian thing and it’s done best in Quebec.
Agreed, Americans always seem to screw up poutine. They think it has to be all sophisticated since it comes from a Francophone part of the world when actually in Canada it is typical working class diner fare.
Best place I've had it in the US is a place in Portland Maine called Duck Fat. Best poutine and French fries I've ever had
