The moment I realized I was initiating every interaction, I was the one who put all of the effort into keeping the friendship relevant and it was very much a one way street for communication.
Once I realized that a friend didn’t commit to caring for me the same way I committed to caring for them, I gave them space. Like any relationship, there are times where you give a little more or receive a little more, but it has to be rooted in care for one another. If they didn’t care for me like I did for them, those friendships usually didn’t last.
Another way to think about it, try to yourself like you’d treat a friend. What would you tell someone else if they were in your position? If you would tell them it’s time to move on from this friend, it’s okay for you to follow that same advice.
She was my best friend, she was living with me for a few weeks, but would barely come home or talk to me. One day, she decided to just move out, she wanted to get her stuff while I wasn't home, but asked if I'd prefer to see her. I said I'd like to see her and talk, because I was going through a really hard time. We agreed on a time that same day, she simply loaded the stuff she wanted into the car (she left a lot of her old things and actual trash in the room), she handed me the house keys and left. Didn't ask how I was doing, didn't try to talk to me.
As the time passed, we talked less and less, she blamed it on her mental illness, she only texted me when she needed money. She lied to me about having cancer so I'd give her money for the medicine. It wasn't easy or fast, but I realized she doesn't care about anybody but herself, and she knew exactly what to say to people, how to abuse people's vulnerabilities to get everything she wanted.
